Judging by the new-model intros from European carmakers, you'd think the bubble economy was still going strong.

SAAB.Saab officially became an independent Swedish car company again with its sale to sports car maker Koenigsegg, but for the foreseeable future it will still depend on General Motors. The upcoming new 9-5 and the 9-4X share platforms with Cadillac and Opel products and will be produced in GM factories. What happens after that is anyone's guess.

But, while visitor numbers were estimated off 25% to 750,000, several well-known Japanese brands (not including Mazda, which has long been popular in Germany) stayed away, BMW kept its tent folded and the lavish on-stand hospitality of some previous years was noticeably absent, the show was still the usual sprawl.
