2010 Nissan 370Z
2010 Nissan 370Z
The big news for 2010 is the arrival of the 40th Anniversary Edition, which -- you guessed it -- commemorates four decades of the Z in the U.S. Painted in unique “40th Graphite” gray and trimmed with a special red-leather interior, the 40th Anniversary Z boasts smoke-finished 19-inch RAYS forged wheels, Nissan sport brakes with red calipers, and a viscous limited-slip differential.

The 370Zis the current iteration in a long line of Z cars from Nissan. They have evolved quite a bit since their beginnings, but they still offer a great deal of performance for the money. With the introduction of the 370z, Nissan has put the somewhat portly 350z on a diet. Then made it smaller and added more power. What could be wrong with that formula? Along the way, numerous steel pieces were replaced with aluminum in the name of weight savings. The 370 Z is available as either a coupe or a roadster for top down fun.

All 370Z trims share the most powerful Z engine yet implemented. At 332 HP and 270 Ft. – Lbs. of torque, this 3.7 liter V-6 is a screamer. It can transfer this power to the rear wheels via either a 6 speed manual transmission or the optional 7 speed automatic transmission. A feature of note with the manual transmission is the SynchroRev technology which matches engine speed to wheel speed on shifts, even blipping the throttle on downshifts. It makes even the most heavy handed driver shift like the pros.

2010 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport
2010 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport
Outlander Sport is the first Mitsubishi to use lightweight, dent-resistant front fenders made from recycled plastic. Further, with regenerative braking, class-leading 0.33 Cd aerodynamics, and electric power steering, the Sport achieves up to 31 mpg on the highway. Drivers will appreciate such premium features as hill-start assist, seven airbags, 710-watt audio, Bluetooth phone and audio capability, and all-wheel drive.

31 MPG on the highway is not an easy feat to achieve on any crossover vehicle. Mitsubishi manages it on the Outlander Sport. They've taken the outlander chassis and made a vehicle that is 15 inches shorter. Now close to the size of the largest Mini, the Countryman. It's a small crossover to be sure, but it manages to maintain most of what makes a crossover work. It is available in either front wheel drive or all-wheel drive flavors, and can be had with either a 5 speed manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission, or CVT.

The 2.0 liter inline four cylinder is the only engine option, although the engine bay look like it could easily accommodate a V-6. This engine was a joint engineer venture between Mitsubishi, Hyundai, and Chrysler. While it does manage to be almost Honda smooth, it just doesn't have the power to make things interesting. It generates 148 HP, which in the Outlander Sport, is only good for 16.6 second quarter mile run at 83.9 MPH. Perhaps where this engine to receive a turbocharger like its competition from Mini and Nissan, the picture would change somewhat.

2010 Mitsubishi Outlander
2010 Mitsubishi Outlander
For 2010 the Outlander receives Mitsubishi’s familial face, replete with the Lancer Evo’s trapezoidal grille. Model designations have been juggled and now include ES and SE four-cylinder models and XLS and GT V-6 models. Sitting atop the range is a new GT, which comes standard with a 230-horsepower V-6, Mitsubishi’s Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) all-wheel-drive system, 18-inch alloys, and synthetic leather on the dash.

A few years ago, the Outlander stepped into one of the most hotly contested of product segments, the small SUV market. Long dominated by the likes of the Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4, the Outlander remains, despite Mitsubishis attempts to improve upon it, in the back of the pack. It offers the same All Wheel Drive, commanding view of the road, and cargo space that consumer look for, while setting itself apart somewhat due to its unique style. To its credit, the current Outlander solves some of the knocks against it by offering more power and sportier handling though the tradeoff for that sporty handling is ride stiff enough to leave many unhappy. Interior space remains an issue, with cramped second seat and nearly unusable third seat dimensions.

There are two engines available for the Outlander. A 2.4 liter four cylinder developing 168 HP and a 3.0 liter V-6 good for 230HP. Continuously Variable Transmission or CVT is standard with the four cylinder engine. The models equipped with the V-6 get a more traditional 6 speed automatic to shift gears for them.

2010 Mitsubishi Lancer
Electronic stability control and anti-lock brakes with EBD are now standard on all Lancer models. Moreover, every Lancer for 2010 receives revised taillamps with black extensions, an eight-inch pole antenna, and new side air dams. The new Evolution MR Touring ups the premium quotient with a power sunroof, rear lip spoiler, automatic on/off headlamps, insulated front windshield glass, improved sound insulation, and leather-trimmed upholstery with heated front seats.

The Lancer has come a long way since its beginnings as a unimpressive compact with bland styling and dull driving demeanor. Now It offers something for everyone. In its base configuration, it markets itself to the inexpensive entry level sedan or hatchback market and in different trims it can be a screamer. Since its redesign, the Lancer has improved its handling, styling, and power (on the top engines) One area the Lancer does not impress is in fuel economy. While the top end Ralliart model will never be selected for efficiency, it's unfortunate that the lower end models couldn't squeeze more mileage out of their small, unrefined engines.

The base engine is a 2.0 liter four cylinder, making 152HP and only 143 HP in CA. The GTS package ups the ante to a 2.4 liter four cylinder making 168 HP. Both models come standard with a 5 speed automatic with optional continuously variable transmission, or CVT. The CVT is not particularly well executed in the Lancers however, and fuel economy is 24 and 23 combined for the 2.0 and the 2.4 liter respectively.

2010 Mitsubishi Galant
2010 Mitsubishi Galant
A new silver-painted mesh grille adds some pizzazz to the Galant’s nose. The top-of-the-line SE model receives standard 18-inch alloy wheels, a color-keyed rear spoiler, and a chrome exhaust finisher. For added value, the SE now boasts a navigation/backup camera package that features Mitsubishi’s multi-communication system with a seven-inch touch-screen LCD, DVD-based navigation with lane guidance, and a backup camera

There was a time when the Galant from Mitsubishi was a car to be considered when shopping for a mid-sized sedan. They were fairly sport, fairly stylish, and could even be found with what was at the time, advanced technology, in the form of the Turbocharged, all-wheel drive VR4 from the 1980's. Times have changed a great deal since then, but the Galant has not. It lacks much of the inspiration that has gone into class leading models and has now been surpassed in virtually all respects by the competition. It's most recent generation came off the factory floor in 2004.

While there have been some performance oriented engines available over the years, such as the 258 HP V-6 of 2007, the current Galant is only offered with the companies anemic 2.4 liter four cylinder, making 160 HP. The fact that its fuel economy is only middling does nothing to help correct the lack of power. Still the Galant can seat 5 and return 30mpg on the highway. It seems likely that a new Galant will be making its way to our shores in the near future.

2010 Mitsubishi Endeavor
2010 Mitsubishi Endeavor
For 2010 the Endeavor receives a convenient Bluetooth hands-free phone system with voice recognition. To spice up the exterior, the Endeavor wears a restyled tailgate and front grille. Further, Mitsubishi has added two new exterior colors to the Endeavor’s palette. Finally, the base LS model now offers color-keyed door handles and side mirrors, while the top-level SE comes standard with all-new 18-inch alloy wheels.

In 2004 Mitsubishi launched the Endeavor, which was a surprise win in an Edmunds comparison test of the day. However, despite continued improvements to the model, it has started to slip under heavy pressure from other car makers in this highly competitive category. After the Montero left the lineup in 2006, the Endeavor was left as the largest SUV in Mitsubishi's fleet. To compete in this class, a third seat has become almost a price of entry and the Endeavor lacks one.

The Endeavor is available in two different trim levels; both are powered by the same 3.8 liter V-6 engine which surprisingly is only able to generate 225 HP. This is further hampered by the fact that it is shifted through a far from cutting edge four speed automatic transmission. Though Mitsubishi has tried to give it a trendier feel with the addition of paddle shifters. The engine offers plenty of torque, but combined with the transmission from days gone by cannot pull it along like a more modern 5, 6 , or even 7 speed automatic would be able to do.

2010 Mitsubishi Eclipse
The big news -- literally -- for the 2010 Eclipse is the addition of a large rear spoiler on the GT model, which also receives Xenon headlamps. A new GS Sport model offers the style of the GT but with I-4 power. All Eclipses wear revised front and rear fascias, and the GS Spyder now boasts a dual exhaust system.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse doesn't have the same competition it used to. In its long production cycle it battled head to head with the likes of the Toyota Celica, Acura RSX, and the Honda Prelude. Those have all gone the way of the dinosaur, with the eclipse left hanging on as the last of the inexpensive, high performance sport coupes. While the current generation's style can be seen as somewhat over the top, it helps them to stand out among other cars on the road. It remains a statement of style on the road to this day. However, it's performance hasn't kept up with the times as well as its looks.

With the 2.4 liter four cylinder base engine only capable of producing 162 HP, it's not going to sling the Eclipse along with much authority, nor does it sip fuel, combined with its four speed automatic transmission, it comes up short with a 23mpg combines rating. The Eclipse GT comes with a more powerful, V-6 engine displacing 3.6 liters and generating 265HP. However, the engine requires premium fuel and shifted through its 5 speed auto returns 19mpg combined fuel economy.

2011 MINI Countryman
2011 MINI Countryman
It all is. As the largest member of the Mini family, the Countryman will be aimed at picking up customers that found previous Mini variants just a little too small for their liking. Engine and transmission options are the same fare found in other Minis -- a 1.6-liter I-4 in either naturally aspirated or turbocharged forms, mated to either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. The Countryman is also the first Mini to come with all-wheel drive as an option.

What is a Mini when it's no mini? It's a Mini Countryman. This is what BWM refers to as a Mini crossover. While still a small car, being about the size of a Honda Fit, it is somewhat larger than the standard Mini and is able to add four doors to the mix, making life much easier for those who spend time in the rear seats.

The Countryman is not without its crossover bits though. It offers a higher seating position than the hatchback and is now fixed with Mini's ALL4 All wheel drive system, which is an always on all wheel drive.

The 1.6 liter four cylinder engine, making 121 horsepower remains an option for the Countryman, though they have updated the power of the Turbocharged version of the engine to 181 HP. A six speed manual transmission is standard with a six speed automatic offered as an option.

It will come as no surprise that the Countryman offers significantly more cargo space than the standard Mini, What is a nice surprise is the 8 inches of extra shoulder room it affords for rear passengers.

2010 MINI Cooper
The Mini continues into 2010 with minor tweaks, including a standard multifunction steering wheel and cruise control. Also new are two limited-edition models -- the Mayfair and the Camden. The latter features Mini’s interactive Mission Control.

Cars that get good gas mileage are always dull behind the wheel, right? Not so, says the Mini Cooper. Born from BMW in 2001, the Mini has been hugely successful since its introduction. Growing into a second generation in 2007 the Mini continues to evolve and delight owners with its' cute good look, razor sharp handling, not at all unimpressive performance, and its respectable fuel economy. Add to that the Mini is the most customizable car in its class and you have the recipe for a vehicle which will continue to sell well for years to come. Most options that come in packages can also be ordered individually, so the possibilities for personalization abound. The mini is available as either a hatchback or a convertible, and three trim levels.

The standard Mini is powered by a 118 HP 1.6 liter four cylinder engine. A six speed manual is standard with a six speed automatic transmission being offered as an option. The S model uses the same drivetrain but adds a turbocharger to the engine, bringing power up the 172 HP. A John Cooper Works edition does even better bringing the Turbo four's power up to 208 HP.

2010 Mercury Mountaineer
For 2010, the Mercury Mountaineer received Trailer Sway Control as a standard feature along while the upgraded 6-speaker, 190-watt stereo and a moonroof has become standard on Premier models.

The Mercury Mountaineer, now in its second generation, is the only SUV in Mercury's catalog large enough to seat 7 people. While it uses a truck like body on frame chassis, it remains highly regarded in this category, much like its corporate cousin, the Ford Explorer. As with all Mercury models, if you want one, you need to act soon, as the entire brand is going to under the axe in the near future. The Mercury has sold well due to its more pleasant ride, the use of All-Wheel Drive as opposed to standard four wheel drive, and a host of standard feature upgrades. The class has become more competitive however, and the Mountaineer is starting to slip under pressure from other auto makers.

Engines for the Mountaineer are either a 4.0 liter V-6 making 210 HP or a 4.6 liter V-8 which produces 292 HP. The V-6 makes due with a five speed automatic transmission, while the V-8 gets an upgrade to a six speed automatic. Both engine models come standard with rear wheel drive but can utilize all-wheel drive as an optional upgrade.

2010 Mercury Milan
2010 Mercury Milan
Though not a complete ground-up redesign, the 2010 Milan is heavily updated and features a new interior, new sheetmetal, and a new four-cylinder engine. Its 3.0-liter V-6 carries over, but the engine has been revised to make more power to be more competitive. The new Milan Hybrid is Mercury's second such model and of course is also the most fuel-efficient.

The Mercury Milan was redesigned in 2010. It is the mechanical twin of the Ford Fusion. The Fusion was rated Car of the year by Motor Trend for 2010 and since the two are identical except for their appearance, the award applies to most of what makes up the Milan as well. The main difference between the two is the Milan's more upscale appearance and more standard features. You won't be likely to see a clone of your car at many stoplights due to the small production run for the current Milan's. This is further ensured by the fact that the entire Mercury line is not long for the production world.

The base engine for the Milan is the 175 HP 2.5 liter four cylinder. A manual 6 speed transmission is standard with a 6 speed automatic available as an option. Mercury also offers a 3.0 liter V-6 making 240 HP, though it is only offered with the 6 speed automatic transmission. Rear wheel drive is standard for both engines, but an all-wheel drive system is available as an option with the V-6.

2010 Mercury Mariner
Several features have been added to the Mercury Mariner for 2010. These include integrated spotted mirrors, an available rear-view camera system, Active Park Assist self-parallel-parking system, and the MyKey system that can restrict some vehicle functions when desired. Also new is the Sync with Traffic, Directions and Information system that adds GPS functionality as well as Bluetooth connectivity.

The Mercury Mariner is the mechanical twin of Ford's Escape and the Mazda Tribute. These small SUV's make the most of the compromises made during their design. They afford the high seating position that many people crave. They offer a commanding view of the road ahead and can be filled with children or groceries, even in the winter months, when in climate weather would slow down most cars. The mariner has its share of modern amenities and technological features, although it's overall design is starting to show its age compared with class leaders such as those from Honda, Toyota, and Hyundai.

The Mariner is offered with either a 171 HP four cylinder or a 240 HP 3.0 liter V-6. Both of which are mated to a six speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive comes as an option for both engines.

The standard feature list on the mariners is fairly extensive. They come with air conditioning, all power controls, keyless entry, and tinted window glass. Options include a sunroof, navigation, heated front seats, and automated self-parking feature, and an upgraded audio system.

2010 Mercury Grand Marquis
The Grand Marquis enters its final year without any changes.

2010 marks the end of the line for the Grand Marquis. It has served for many years as the symbol of old school American luxury. A large, low RPM V-8 driving the rear wheels, with suspension so soft that it floats over bumps rather than absorbing them. This type of ride has appealed to an older crowd for the full 30 years that platform which powers the Grand Marquis, and its sister cars, the Lincoln Town Car, and Ford Crown Victoria, has been in production. For the last several years, it's styling has remained fairly stagnant, which to its buyers has been a good thing, as they are typically a demographic who doesn't like the idea of new and different technology being added to their vehicles.

There is only trim level available at present, the LS. While it has all the features that its loyal buyers have come to love, it goes the way of the dinosaur it is taking its amazingly underpowered engine along with it. A 4.6 liter V-8 making 224 HP and mated to a 4 speed automatic was all that was offered to push this large sedan.

2011 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class
There are only minor changes for 2011. The 382-horsepower GL550 gains a restyled front bumper. All models get a rearview mirror with integrated compass, what the company refers to as saddle-style second- and third-row head restraints, and the option of blind-spot assist. Another new option is the next generation of telematics, called mbrace, which includes safety and convenience features.

Originally destined to replace the G series, the GL is too civilized to replace the aging G series when it comes to off road prowess. The GL joins the ranks of Mercedes produces that are built in the USA. Specifically, the Alabama plant that also produces the M and R classes. The mass produced, unibody for the GL is shared with those other two models, though on the road, the vehicles have a distinctively different feel which keeps the models separate at least for the person behind the wheel.

The engine choices for the GL are a 4.7 liter V-8 for the GL 450. A 3.0 liter turbo diesel powers the GL 350 Blue TEC. The top of the line GL 550 gets its motivation from. A 5.5 liter 382 HP V-8. All engines send their power through a seven speed automatic transmission. All models come with adjustable air bag suspension and all-wheel drive, regardless of the engine that is chosen.

While a fairly pricey entry into this segment, the GL accommodates with its luxury appointments, spacious cabin, and more carlike ride than some of the competitor's.

2011 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter
For 2011 the Sprinter now wears the three-pointed Mercedes-Benz star on its grille -- unless, of course, it’s sold as a Freightliner (which is part of the Mercedes family). The 2500 receives a restyled instrument cluster. Otherwise, everything remains the same, including the excellent turbodiesel and smooth transmission. On the commercial side, a MiniBus will be available in early 2011 with room for up to 16 people.

Being sold under the Dodge brand for the last 7 years hasn't hurt the Mercedes Sprinter. After the split between Mercedes and Chrysler, the Sprinter returns to its Mercedes badging. They will still be assembled in the US as Mercedes South Carolina plant.

While the passenger model is often found shuttling people around airports, the sprinter is at heart a cargo van. There are several factors that will set this van apart from the Ford and Chevy competition. It boasts the lowest floor height in its segment and has an extra tall version available. In that form, a person standing 6 foot 3 inches can still walk around in the cargo area. The competition doesn't allow for a full sized human to walk around within the cargo area. Despite the fact that it can hold over twice the cargo of its Chevy counterpart, it remains nimble and easy to drive due to its better designed chassis. It fuel economy is greater than that of the competition as well, due mostly to the use of Mercedes' 3.0 Liter Blue TEC diesel V-6, rather than a small gas 8 which is favored by other car makers.
