Mini's cute 'ute is a Mini through and through and provides us with maxi fun.

It doesn’t take a marketing genius to recognize the inherent risk in adding a crossover to a brand called “Mini.” Indeed, a high-riding, Austrian-built four-wheel-drive vehicle sounds like a quick and easy way to pour a decade’s worth of brand equity down the drain. However, the Countryman is a triumph of strong execution over questionable judgment, which is a fancy way of saying it’s really nice.

A pretty nice consolation prize for Volvo devotees who are disappointed the automaker no longer sells the V70 wagon.

The Volvo V70 is gone and the Subaru Outback has morphed into a conventional crossover, but rest easy, New England college professors, Trader Joes shoppers, and liberal bumper sticker printers; the XC70 remains with us. It also remains worthy of consideration over "real" crossovers, even for those don't fall into one of the above demographic segments.

It's AMG versus AMG as a 2700-hp Cigarette boat faces off against a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG in a high-speed, island-hopping poker run through Florida.

Boats are pure whimsy. As much as I'm into cars, most of the time you drive it's because of the banal need to get somewhere. But if you're on a boat, chances are you're there just for the sake of the thing itself. It's like the difference between the house you live in and a fun summer rental -- you may love your house, but being there isn't the same as being on vacation.
