The APA and W5 are at it again

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Last weekend, CTV's W5 aired the now famous (or is that infamous) used car investigation results.

This year, well, nothing much has changed... Old habits die hard for used car lots as they still regularly use false advertising to get people into their showrooms.

George Iny, President of the Automobile Protection Association, puts it best: “The low-ball, the bait and switch and the extra unadvertised fees.”

The other undying trend are “curbsiders”. In the video, we meet a few crafty fellows that have great stories that, unfortunately, must work once in a while as they are professional “fakes”.

In both situations, the cars are in terrible condition, a few are not even road worthy.

As ever, the saying “buyer beware” holds true.

Mr Iny notes that the Province of Quebec is not especially stringent when it comes to tracking and reporting accidented vehicles. Could this be one of the hidden unspoken reasons why Bill 48 was introduced? A way way the SAAQ to clean up their act?

Gutter to Glory – Pygmalion at the Track

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
It's 2,000 metres of concrete that twists and turns like a boa constrictor suffocating its prey.

The road course at Mission International Raceway is known as an intensive, challenging track that doesn't suffer fools or their machines. Feathering a hair trigger, the utmost in concentration is needed to prevent an accidental shot with calamitous results.

At least that's how it felt to me.

At 5:30 Saturday morning I rolled out of bed with eyes that could have used a few more hours welded shut. I didn't complain.

I was headed to the track, but those simple words fail to do the long awaited day justice.

Seated next to me would be local racing legend Tony Morris Sr. Since retiring from racing in 2002, Tony has partnered with Porsche Cars Canada Limited teaching journalists how to drive and appreciate the breathtaking capabilities of Porsche products.

Tony Morris Sr.

While Tony is an integral part of the process that elevated me from the automotive gutter to a professional track in some sort of octane-fueled version of George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, it was the driving dynamics of two German rides that enabled my metamorphosis.

The morning hours of my ascension found me behind the wheel of a Porsche 991, better known as the 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S.

My lime gold metallic coupe bellowed with 400 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque derived from a 3.8L flat-six powerplant featuring direct injection and integrated dry sump lubrication.

With man and machine working in perfect synchronicity, I became the unknown variable in the gutter to glory story. And while self-doubt permeated my being and kept my ego in-check, Tony exhibited unwavering confidence and determination in commissioning my evolution from newbie to novice.

TM's first challenge upon the green flag was to find a way to relax me and calm my nerves as we were waved onto the track from pit lane. TM can see it. One look at a driver's hands on the wheel and he knows the person's mental state.

Nothing good comes of clenching the wheel like the arms of a dental chair.

I took Tony's instruction to heart, and before I realized it, I had become singularly focused. Nothing else mattered. If it didn't pertain to getting the Carrera S around the track quickly and safely, it was repressed deeper than bottle-fed scarring.

Photo: Rob Rothwell/Auto123.com

The only audible intrusion over the famed rear-engine wail was TM's instructive play-by-play.

“Only brake in a straight line,” is one of those techniques that Tony harps on. Slowing the car to the ideal speed to enter a corner must be accomplished before turning into the curve or one risks unsettling the car mid-corner, and that's not a good thing.

With speed nailed, it all comes down to the most efficient line through a turn, and that's not as simple as it may seem.

My natural driving instinct had me placing the car too tight to the inside; Tony quickly corrected that.

“Go wide - wider,” was TM's refrain as I came into number eight and tried to set the car up to exit turn nine carrying as much speed as possible. Unwinding the Carrera to the outer edge of the track through turn eight felt so unnatural but that's what my clairvoyant insisted I do.

Suddenly, I was coming out of number nine carrying velocity far exceeding that of the Ferrari 458 Italia I was chasing. As we hit the immediate straightaway, I flung Porsche's little supercar past the Italian stallion which had committed to an inferior line and was not able to ignite the afterburners as early.

With two big thumbs-up from Tony, I felt elation flood my senses and a need to chase down the next target in my sights - I've tasted blood.

At the track, everything stops for lunch. No light-headed racing here. With a full stomach, I return to my two-kilometre stretch of concrete crack but this time my ride is much bigger; we're strapped into Porsche's 2012 Panamera S Hybrid that combines battery with octane to deliver a total of 380 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque.

Photo: Rob Rothwell/Auto123.com

Accompanying the car change is a change in weather; deluged by rain, wipers waving, Tony tells me that he used to love racing in the rain. “Oh great,” I think to myself.

My racing coach isn't advising me to slow down due to the slick road surface. No. He's pushing me, and frankly, I'm a rabid dog pulling mercilessly on the leash.

Tony has revised my cornering lines to take advantage of drier portions of the track, avoiding Olympic-size pools of water that others wade through. The strategy works, and I begin reeling in some pretty impressive machinery.

I'm sure more than a few drivers were surprised to see the big four-door sled filling their rearviews as my octane-fuelled Pygmalion Story played out. My professor worked his magic over the course of the day, lifting a mediocre driver from the asphalt gutter to create a racer thirsty for the chase.

Despite TM's absence, Porsche owners or any driving enthusiast with a properly prepared vehicle, can enjoy a track day at Mission's International Raceway by registering for the Inside Line track event with Morrisport Advanced Driving at www.morrisport.com/trackdays.html.

IndyCar: Will Power overcomes odds to win in Long Beach

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Team Penske's Will Power may have been among the drivers who had been sanctioned by a 10-place grid penalty but, still, he overcame the odds to win IndyCar classic race in Long Beach.

Because of some swift moves on the track and some great strategy, the Australian, who was starting 12th, maintained the pace and fended-off a late charge from Schmidt's Simon Pagenaud to take his second victory of the 2012 season.

Power had chosen to make his last pitstop early and therefore had to conserve his fuel to last thru the end while his closest pursuant Pagenaud was exactly on an opposite strategy and was forced to stop later; losing some positions in the process.

With 30 laps remaining, the Schmidt Motorsport ace was back in fourth and with plenty of fuel to spare. The Frenchman started his way back to the front by moving around Rubens Barrichello (KV Racing) for third.

Then, with 11 laps to go he did the same to Rahal Letterman's Takuma Sato before starting closing the gap between him and the leader Power. From 7 seconds out, Pagenaud gained ground with each lap but, still, Power was able to cross the finish line with only 0.8 seconds to spare.

Sato was looking for a podium finish but was spun from behind by Andretti's Ryan Hunter-Reay on the final lap. Hunter-Reay was handed a 30 seconds penalty for his part in the incident, promoting his team-mate James Hinchcliffe onto the podium.

Ford Motor Company's all-new Focus Electric will become the first all-electric pace car to ever lead the field for a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at the Richmond 400.

The all-new Focus Electric will perform all pace care duties at Richmond International Raceway on April 28.

Approximately 35 percent of new car intenders are motorsports fans and 78 percent of them support NASCAR, according to Ford research. Additionally, Ford race fans are 67 percent more likely to consider Ford products than general market consumers.

In January, Ford became the first manufacturer to show off its 2013 NASCAR race car when it unveiled the new 2013 Fusion racer to media in Charlotte, N.C.

The Focus Electric pace car will be unveiled for the public at the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond on April 25. Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling will deliver the Focus Electric to Richmond International Raceway, where it will serve as pace car for that weekend's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event.

Having claimed a dominant pole position by half a second, Rosberg took his debut victory and the first win for Mercedes since the 1955 Italian Grand Prix, using a two-stop strategy.

Rosberg's pace at the beginning of the Grand Prix was enough to ensure that he was able to complete his first pit stop without losing the lead and from there on he was able to control his advantage, completing the race on the medium tires.

F1: Fernando Alonso expecting more Ferrari misery in Bahrain

From GMM

Despite winning in Malaysia last month, Fernando Alonso is expecting a miserable weekend in Bahrain.

On the back of his surprise Sepang victory, the Spaniard qualified and finished just ninth in China, and he is not expecting a better Ferrari until next month's return to European grands prix.

"Obviously, this (result) does not leave me very optimistic for Bahrain, on a track where traction and speed are vital, exactly the areas where we are weakest," said Alonso in Shanghai.

Even more bluntly, he said the Maranello based team is "far behind" the pacesetters because the F2012 has "big problems" in aerodynamics.

But the bright side, Alonso insisted, is that the field of 2012 is oddly tightly bunched.

"If we improve two, three tenths then we can jump several opponents," he is quoted by Brazil's O Estado de S.Paulo. "The fight now is for fractions of seconds."

After Ferrari and Sauber were quick in Malaysia, Mercedes' Nico Rosberg dominated in China -- but many in the paddock still believe McLaren has the quickest car overall.

Indeed, Jenson Button is ruing a team mistake - a cross-threaded wheel nut during a pitstop - that he says cost him a shot at Shanghai victory.

"There can't be many more mistakes if you want to compete for a championship, definitely not," he said.

Karting: World KF1 Championship without European rounds

From CIK FIA

Further to hearing and following the recommendations and desiderata of most of the major Manufacturers performing on the international Karting scene, the CIK-FIA had introduced a new World Championship format dedicated to the KF1 category for the year 2012. Five Organisers have trustfully invested in the organisation of events which were supposed to constitute the highlight of their season and possibly that of the history of their circuit or club.

On the back of receiving 16 entries and of the World Council's green light to confirm the World Championship despite this small number of participants, the FIA and CIK, only a few days before the date scheduled for the publication of the entry list, had to deplore the announcement by the three main Manufacturers concerned (who represent 12 Drivers) that they would not participate in the competition if a minimum of 25 starters could not be reached.

Without yet cancelling the 2012 CIK-FIA World KF1 Championship, the CIK-FIA is therefore compelled to delete its three European events scheduled for Varennes (France), PF International (Great Britain) and Sarno (Italy).

As the sporting regulations of the Championship stipulate that the Asian events of Suzuka and Macau can be reinforced by local participation, these two rounds could be maintained thanks to a large enough field. The CIK and FIA will shortly take a decision regarding the events scheduled for Japan and Macau.

IndyCar: Michel Jourdain Jr. to race for Rahal Letterman?

According to reports, former Champ Car and IndyCar driver Michel Jourdain Jr could find himself in a Rahal Letterman Lanigan (RLL) car for the upcoming Indianapolis 500 if everything goes according to plan.

The Mexican was present in RLL garage last weekend during the Long Beach Grand Prix and when asked about his visit, both Bobby Rahal and Jourdain Jr. confirmed that the chances are more than good for the Mexican to contest the Indy 500.

Jourdain Jr. won races in Milwaukee and in Montreal ChampCar races during his stay with Rahal's squad in 2003.

Earlier this season, the RLL had announced that former GP2 stand-out Luca Filippi would drive the team's second car beginning with the 500, but Rahal said the sponsorship money has not come through yet. If it does, the team could run three cars at the Indy 500.

F1: Jean Todt finally breaks silence on Bahrain

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
From GMM

Jean Todt has broken his long and conspicuous silence over the Bahrain controversy.

Until now, the ultra-low-profile FIA president had been reluctant to speak on the issue, despite deciding that the sport should push ahead with this weekend's race in the troubled island Kingdom.

So unremarkable was Frenchman Todt's visit to Shanghai last weekend that most reporters believed he in fact left China on Saturday.

He then appeared on Sunday's grid, giving reluctantly short soundbites and congratulating his former Ferrari colleague Ross Brawn on Nico Rosberg's win.

Todt even finally commented on Bahrain.

Asked why the event is going ahead despite the ongoing controversy, he told German RTL television: "It has a date on the calendar and was always planned.

"There has been some controversy about it, but the FIA is a sports organisation. We are only interested in sport -- not politics. Our responsibility is that people can go there and have good and secure conditions. This will be the case," Todt insisted.

"We have spoken in this regard with representatives of the government, with the embassies and with neighbouring countries, as well as with European foreign ministries. We have made an extension examination with a lot of checks. It is clear that the grand prix can go ahead. At the moment, a major golf tournament is going ahead in Bahrain. On one hand, there are unpleasant political aspects as well, but it's the same thing all over the world. On the other hand, we are a sport. We are confident that the next grand prix will go ahead just as successfully as this one here in China," he added.

He crossed the finish line with an advantage of more than 1.5 seconds over his nearest pursuant. Gustavo Yacaman (Team Moore) was third on the road but was issued with a 30s post-race penalty that appeared to be linked to some damaged bodywork.

That handed the final podium place to Schmidt's Tristan Vautier, with Victor Carbone, Carlos Munoz and Oli Webb rounding out the top six.

Rally: Dani Sordo could replace Latvala in Argentina

Dani Sordo is in talks with the works team Ford to replace the injured Jari-Matti Latvala in Argentina.

The name of the Spaniard, who normally drives for the MINI Prodrive team does not appear on Rally Argentina's entry list, as his team elected not to make the trip to South America for economical reasons.

Sordo, who has set great performances in his MINI previously this year (he took a podium finish in the opening round, Rally Monte Carlo in January), has been approached by team Ford's bosses. They are interested in hiring him, especially because of the experience he gained during his four seasons alongside Sébastien Loeb at the Citroen Team.

Dani Sordo said he was interested in Ford's offer, but he wants to do a test in the Ford Fiesta WRC before he makes his final decision.

« I would be pleased to run for them in Argentina, he said. But I need the permission of the MINI Prodrive team first. We have to strike the deal quickly, because I would like to do a test session before going to Argentina. It is happens, I will give everything I can... »

If the deal fails with Sordo, Ford may choose between youngsters Mads Ostberg and Ott Tanak to assist Petter Solberg in Argentina.

Morevoer, Team MINI Prodrive has only confirmed its participation to three world rallies until the end of the season : New Zealand, Germany and Wales.

F1: Mercedes reaches summit with ”small budget” says Norbert Haug

From GMM

Norbert Haug said he is proud Mercedes has reached the top of formula one in a short space of time and with a small budget.

The German carmaker's works team is often lumped together with F1's other grandees including Ferrari and McLaren, but Haug insists the Brackley based outfit is in fact "a small team, with a small budget".

Mercedes' competition boss, who on Sunday collected the winning constructors' trophy on the Shanghai podium, also said some of the team's rivals - undoubtedly Red Bull - "took five years to win".

"We have done it in two and a quarter," the German told the RTL broadcaster. "That's not bad at all. And there are other teams that still have not made it."

So is Mercedes now a contender for the world championship, despite Haug's earlier protestations that the team needs a few more campaigns under its belt for that?

"It is too early to make a prediction," he told Auto Motor und Sport. "I hope so, but so far we have seen three different winners in three races."

The newest of those winners is Nico Rosberg, who along with Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve are the only sons of F1 drivers to have also gone on to win grands prix.

It is a good omen for Rosberg that both Hill and Villeneuve also won titles.

Rosberg's former Williams teammate, Alex Wurz, has high praise.

"As a teammate (in 2007) he made my life difficult because he was such a fantastic qualifying driver. In the race it was then always okay. But for this (race win) he deserves praise," Wurz told the Austrian ORF broadcaster, "because he did everything after his pole position also sensationally."

But in Bahrain, there could be another winner, triple world champion Niki Lauda remarked.

"I have never before seen F1 as interesting as this," said the Austrian legend. "Every race we see another winner."

2012 Honda Insight Preview (video)

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
The 2012 Honda Insight gets a new look, some new features and (believe it or not!) even better fuel economy.

2012 Honda Insight

An increasingly crowded hybrid field now includes the Ford Fusion, the Kia Optima and, of course, the venerable Toyota Prius. All are pricier, except the new 2012 Toyota Prius c, which offers a nearly price-level competitor for the Insight. Honda's looking to at last gain some ground on the Prius in 2012 with numerous updates, most subtle on their own, but together adding up to a pretty comprehensive update.

Outside, a thin, blue accent bar has been introduced on the grille to denote its high-tech hybrid identity, while restyled bumpers contribute to a 2% increase in aerodynamics. New headlight and brake light internal reflectors, slightly wider tires and new 15-inch wheel covers round out exterior tweaks.

Inside, a reconfigured rear seat offers improved legroom and head room, and the gauge cluster gets a more technically sophisticated look. Cupholders are bigger, seat fabric is posher, and the cabin is quieter. A rearview camera is now available, packaged with an upgraded optional navigation system.

Honda's Integrated Motor Assist featuring a 1.3L i-VTEC 4-cylinder gas engine and 10-kW electric motor develops 98 combined hp at 5,800 rpm and 123 lb-ft of torque at 1,000-1,700 rpm; new friction-reducing measures and a CVT automatic transmission mean fuel economy improvements this year. Its Eco Assist System further enhances the efficiency of throttle control, CVT operation, idle-stop duration, air conditioning and cruise operation, and provides feedback on driving style via a 3D-ish background in the speedo: green for really efficient, blue for not-so-much.

Fuel economy is now rated at 4.7L/100km around town and 4.4L/100km on the highway.

One trim, the LX, is available starting at $21,990.
