NASCAR: Villarino and Villa take one victory apiece at Brands Hatch

After Ander Villarino takes his third Racecar Euroseries win in a row in sprint race at Brands Hatch, Javier Villa ended his fellow countryman's domination by taking endurance race win.

Ander Vilarino won the Elite Sprint of the Bands Hatch 200, the second event of the 2012 EURO-RACECAR NASCAR Touring Series. For his third victory in three races this season, the Spanish driver finishes ahead of his two main contenders: RomainThievin, poleman, and Javier Villa. A trio already seen on the Nogaro's podium.

Spanish Javier Villa has ended the winning streak of Ander Vilarino in the Open Endurance race of Brands Hatch 200, a great battle with Villarino that ended on lap 22, when junior driver Villa took the lead and pulled away in front. Romain Thievin took another podium finish behind both Spaniard.

Villarino still leads provisional championship classification ahead of Thievin and Villa.

F1: Lotus relations turned sour explains Vitaly Petrov

Vitaly Petrov has revealed he lost his seat at the Renault team, which is now known as Lotus, following disagreements with key team members.

For 2012, the Russian has had to switch to Caterham, a F1 backmarker.

In the meantime, with an all-new driver lineup comprising former world champion Kimi Raikkonen alongside Romain Grosjean, Lotus has stepped up a gear and is now among the sport's most highly competitive teams.

"What happened last year was a shame, but at the end of the season relations with some people soured and they were against me," Petrov is quoted by the Russian website f1news.ru.

Now he's at Caterham, paired with Heikki Kovalainen, who is widely regarded as the Tony Fernandes-led team's main driver.

"At Renault it didn't work," Petrov explained. "I was ahead of my teammates, but asked to leave anyway. But this was an exception, as in all situations you must always strive to be ahead of your teammate."

The Russian insists Kovalainen is not treated preferentially.

"Of course things sometimes appear that way, but when I saw the situation from the inside, I realised that everything is open. Here's an example: in Malaysia we had one new engine cover, they called Heikki and I together, and tossed a coin! From that day I had not a single doubt."

As for his chances this weekend in Monaco, Petrov insisted: "There is a good chance to be in a good position. But if we score points then it will not be because we are fast but because of something else like a better strategy."

Indy 500: Indianapolis grid now completed

The starting grid for the upcoming Indianapolis 500 has now been officially completed after Bump Day that was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday.

Good news for the Lotus-powered teams as Jean Alesi (Fan Force United) and HVM's Simona de Silvestro are both on for the race after formally qualifying for the race. Still, both are at least 12 mph slower than the poslesitter.

Quickest of the Bump Day runners was Dragon's Sebastien Bourdais, whose team, Dragon Racing switched from Lotus to Chevrolet power last week.

Audi makes some of the sexiest coupes on the road today. The TT and S5 are both examples. So is the iconic R8, which is particularly badass because Iron Man drives one.

Trouble is, when more than one passenger requires a ride, you might be out of luck. The S5 has decent rear seats, but no doors to help access them. The TT's rear seats are too small for people with legs, and the R8 doesn't have rear seats at all.

2012 Audi A7 3.0 TFSI quattro Premium

So, for some, Audi's new A7 might be the solution. And the unique and striking 'four-door coupe' styling will likely be what they fall in love with first.

A departure from the chiseled, chunky and muscular looks of many recent Audis, much of the A7 is soft, sweeping, smooth, elegant and gentle. The face, as one of the most aggressive on this side of six-digit territory, is a striking bit of styling, too. This machine looks like a seriously big deal rolling down the road.

A (Relatively) Simple Cabin Jammed With Technology
The tester's cabin contrasted starkly with the depthy, detailed and expressive body. It was mostly simple where shapes and textures are concerned, and was colored mostly with black and silver. Your writer wished for some more flare and energy from the cabin to match the exterior look--but even if this isn't Audi's most exciting cabin, it's still virtually perfectly assembled and trimmed.

High-tech goodies included a night-vision camera that can actively detect and track pedestrians on dark roads, a Head-Up Display (HUD) a la a fighter jet, and a unique doodle-pad gizmo that lets drivers use their fingertip to scribble a phone number or destination directly into the computer. Slick stuff.

Front seats are heated and air conditioned, the steering wheel is heated, and a full suite of connectivity features makes the A7 fast friends with your cell phone or MP3 player.

Utility and Comfort
The sleek, coupe-like roofline means rear headroom is limited for taller occupants, though it should handle four adults of standard height with no concern. The A7's front seats are comfortable, equipped with storage drawers beneath, and flanked by deep, door-mounted storage pockets.

There's a surprising level of utility, too. The wide, long trunk, accessed by a motorized tailgate, should offer up plenty of room for your gear. And with standard quattro all-wheel drive, it's a sporty bit of elegant utility you can use confidently, even in the middle of a blizzard.

The A7's headlights are noteworthy. I've driven countless thousands of kilometers in hundreds of cars after dark, and the A7's lighting system is likely the best I've ever come across. The colour, spread, saturation and quality of its illumination is magnificent.

End of the day, this is a four-door coupe that's ready for a day of shopping, a trip to the slopes in a blizzard, or anything in between.

Supercharged 6
With just three litres of displacement, the A7's V6 uses direct injection and a so-called 'mechanical turbocharger' to boost power output. We Canadians call that a supercharger, by the way.

Nomenclature aside, drivers get 310 horsepower, handled by an automatic transmission with a quick-to-react paddle-shift manual mode. The 8-speed box helps the A7 perform strongly while enabling mileage figures that suggest otherwise.

My test average consumption landed at 10.9L/100km of premium, with that figure falling just below 7 during highway cruising in no particular rush.

Performance
But the A7 is a treat to drive when you're in a rush. Opened up, it's got a restrained but delightful howl that calls a Porsche flat-6 to mind. The supercharger operates in silence, but helps crank out liquid smooth, linear and strong power output at any RPM.

And seriously, you should see this thing get off the line. Massive low-end torque, aggressive gearing and quattro AWD mean the A7 simply squats down and rockets away with no fuss when drivers jam on it. The near-startling levels of off-the-line thrust feel as if they came from a much larger engine.

Handling is typical Audi: planted, stable and composed even ripping corners at high speed. In its 'dynamic' mode, steering is heavy and quick, encouraging dialed-in exploration of the A7's limits when desired.

Shoppers in locales with poorly maintained roads are advised to opt out from the large wheels and low-profile tires, which can result in a rough or jarring ride on some surfaces.

Multitasking, Audi Style
After a week and nearly 3,000 km, I didn't find any one part of the A7 to be the single most overwhelming reason to check it out. It's a machine that's equal parts luxury, high-tech, year-round supercharged sportiness, and utility. A sophisticated Jack of All Trades, if you will.

There's a laundry list of tasks the $68,600 A7 is ready to tackle -- and it'll tackle them all with looks that'll make the neighbors jealous.

Indy 500: Ryan Briscoe on pole (+results)

It was a close battle but in the end, Penske's Ryan Briscoe was able to earn pole for the upcoming Indianapolis 500 by barely edging out Canadian James Hinchcliffe (Andretti Autosport) during Pole Day.

The Australian was able to maintain a total time of 2m38.9514s (226.464mph) for his four laps, putting him in front of Hinchcliffe by a mere 0.0023 seconds, therefore delivering the closest qualifying gap by time in the race's history.

The Andretti squad continued to show that it had been a dominant force all through the week by taking third and fourth with respectively Ryan Hunter-Reay and Marco Andretti.

Briscoe's teammates Will Power and Helio Castroneves ended-up fifth and sixth.

Sarah Fisher Hartman rookie Josef Newgarden was quickest of the Honda-powered runners in seventh, while Ganassi aces Scott Dixon and Dario Franchitti could only managed a distant 15th and 16th respectively.

Rubens Barrichello (KV) will start his first oval race in 10th, right in front of last year pole-sitter Alex Tagliani (Bryan Herta Autosport).

Several cars still need to make the field on Sunday's Bump Day after missing the top 24 on Saturday, including both Lotus-powered entries (HVM's Simona de Silvestro and Fan Force's Jean Alesi), Dragon's Sebastien Bourdais and Katherine Legge, AJ Foyt Racing's Mike Conway, and Sarah Fisher Hartman rookie Bryan Clauson.

WTCC: Race 1 Chevrolet 1-2-3 turns into Race 2 last lap drama (+results, photos)

The usual 1-2-3 Chevrolet order was shaken up by some last lap drama.

Rob Huff converted his pole at the Salzburgring World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) round in a lights-to-flag Race 1 victory, with his Chevrolet teammates Yvan Muller and Alain Menu taking second and third respectively.

But last lap drama in race 2 saw Stefano D'Aste (BMW) take his WTCC career's first win.

The three Chevrolet drivers started the second race of the weekend 8th, 9th and 10th - because of the reversed grid. In no time, they were back in contention for the win, except Menu, who went off the track and retired on lap 8.

The order as the last lap started showed Muller, Huff and then Tom Coronel (BMW), with D'Aste only fourth.

Only then did both remaining Chevrolet drivers pick a puncture, allowing D'Aste through to collect the win over Coronel.

Biggest small-scale models collection auctioned in Indiana

Once more this year, classic car fans will have a chance to obtain some of the finest collectibles at Auburn's (Ind.) Automobilia auction, June 1-3.

This edition features the biggest private collection of small-scale models: more than 600 muscle cars, classics and exotics vehicles and hot rods there to buy.

"Automobilia is great fun for collectors whether their budgets are big or small," said Auctions America by RM's President Donnie Gould. "Some enthusiasts buy scale-model cars because they can't afford the full-size versions; others buy them to put on a desk while the full-size version sits in the garage. Not everyone can afford a million-dollar 427 Cobra, but a well-made scale model might go for a few hundred dollars."

Available items include a fine example of Ferrari 275 GTB/4 NART Spyder, 1:8 scale; expected to go for between $10,000 and $15,000. Still about 10 millions dollars less the 1:1 version. But the highlight of the event will undoubtedly be the Sapo Modelltechnik 1913 Mercer 35J Raceabout - a 3000-parts masterpiece expected to sell for between $18,000 and $25,000.

Canadian Touring: Mathieu Audette earns 2012’s first win

Mathieu Audette (Acura RSX) took top honours of the 2012 Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship (CTCC) season-opening first race of the weekend, presented at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

Audette crossed the finish line 6.433 seconds ahead of Sasha Anis (Hyundai Genesis). Dave Ciekiewicz (BMW 330i) completed the Super Touring podium. Marc-Antoine Camirand (BMW 330i), back from his trip to the Grand Prix de Pau, came home fourth, while Scott Nicol (Honda Civic Si) rounded out the top five.

Karl Thompson (MINI Cooper) won the Touring race in his first outing with Team Octane. Michel Sallenbach (MINI Cooper) made it 1-2 for the team. Damon Sharpe (Honda Civic Si) was third.

In the first ever Canadian B-Spec race, three Honda Fit made it to the podium. Nick Wittmer got the best of Greg Pootmans and Simon Dion-Viens.

Canadian NASCAR: Scott Steckly takes pole at season opener

The defending NASCAR Canadian Tire champion Scott Steckly earned pole after qualification runs held Saturday for the upcoming Vortex Brake Pads 200 at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

With a time of 83.922s lap for an average speed of 105.484 mph, the veteran established a new track record for the series, the old record being held by two-time champion Andrew Ranger.

Second fastest was J.R. Fitzpatrick with a time of 84.092s (105.270 mph), while full-time returnee Andrew Ranger qualified third with a lap of 84.106s (105.253 mph).

Veterans D.J. Kennington and Ron Beauchamp Jr. completed the top 5.

The Vortex Brake Pads 200 is set to take the green flag at 1:30 pm ET on Sunday afternoon.

DTM: Gary Paffett takes win at Brands Hatch

Gary Paffett (Mercedes) confirmed his good form this season by taking his second victory of 2012 in Brands Hatch, ahead of Canadian Bruno Spengler's BMW.

Paffett, who opened up the season in Hockenheim with a win, before he took second position at Lausitzring one week later, was again dominant for the third round of the season presented on his home soil. The Brit clinched pole position, then secured victory at the end of the 98 laps.

Behind him, Bruno Spengler takes second position aboard his BMW M3 DTM. The Canadian driver, who started from third position, moved up to second place at the start, then put the pressure on Gary Paffett in the first laps.

Later on, Spengler lost ground with a bad pit stop, but Paffett also lost time in the pits during his second stop, which allowed the BMW driver to be back on his tail.

Finally, Spengler was forced to slow down in the last moment of the race when his front bumper was damaged, and rubbing on the ground, which slowed him down a bit.

The BMW driver had to defend his second place ahead of Mike Rockenfeller's Audi. Finally, Spengler was able to maintain his position to secure second position, moving up to second in provisional championship classification.

Robert Wickens, the other Canadian driver in DTM, crossed the finish line in 14th position, and was the last driver in the lead lap.

On the final day of testing for the Indy 500, Fast Friday, Marco Andretti claimed the top spot before the beginning of qualifying set for Saturday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The Andretti Autosport driver was able to reach a speed of over 227.540 mph in part because teams were allowed to run the additional 10 kPa of boost (equivalent to 40-50 bhp) that will also be used during qualifying and Bump Day.

Penske's Ryan Briscoe was best of the rest at 226.835mph, putting him just ahead of teammate Helio Castroneves (226.716 mph) and Andretti's Ryan Hunter-Reay (226.400 mph).

Felipe Massa has played down reports he is at risk of losing his Ferrari seat soon, insisting he feels fully supported by Ferrari.

The Brazilian has struggled at the wheel of Ferrari's difficult 2012 car so far, scoring just 2 points compared to his teammate and joint championship leader Fernando Alonso's 61.

It has triggered speculation the Maranello based team might replace him, also because Ferrari said after Barcelona it is "expecting" Massa to improve "right away".

Whilst working at Maranello in the driver simulator on Friday, however, Massa insisted he has not been far away from Alonso at recent races.

"I think we must also take into account that, at the moment, Fernando's driving is amazing: he is on super form, maybe even perfect," he is quoted as saying in a Ferrari statement.

Asked if he feels the famous Italian team's support, he added: "Absolutely, yes, I feel the whole team stands by me.

"Obviously, they are not happy with the results and neither am I: we all want to get out of this (situation) and return to normal.

"It's possible and for sure it's what I want and I know that with the team's help we will manage it," said Massa.
