The auto industry can change a lot from one month to the next. While Land Rover recorded another sales increase of 50% or more from the same period in 2011, Mazda suffered a 6% drop.
Among domestic manufacturers, only Chrysler posted an improvement in April, albeit a very modest one at 3%. Ford and General Motors closed the month with a loss of 5% and 6%, respectively.
The sun continues to shine for MINI, which surfed on a 25% larger wave. Mercedes-Benz and Kia both sold 18% more cars last month than in April 2011.
Most other automakers remained fairly steady.

German driver Tim Bergmeister was seriously injured in a high-speed crash last weekend when his Porsche slammed in the guardrails at Fuji Speedway in Japan.
Bergmeister underwent surgery to save his lungs, which was apparently successful.
His brother Jorg is keeping everyone well informed about Tim's state on his Facebook page.
Thusrday, Jorg wrote: “This morning my brother tried to tell us something... So we gave him a pen and paper and the first word that he wrote was: LAGUNA. So i guess I have no choice but go to Laguna (Seca) tomorrow night. Today, the doctors took him off the respirator and he is talking. He is in a lot of pain from 14 broken ribs and all his other broken bones. There are still a lot of things that can go wrong, but he made a very big step! Thank you everyone for keeping him in your thoughts and prayers. Jörg”
On Wednesday, TomTom announced the new VIA1605 TM navigation system for North America. Similar to Europe's Start 60, it features the largest screen of all TomTom's portable navigation devices at 6''. The bigger menus and buttons also make input simpler.
"Safety on the road is an ever-present concern for today's drivers," reminds Corinne Vigreux, Managing Director at TomTom.
The new GPS goes on sale later this month starting at $229.99.

Paul di Resta has played down media speculation
linking him with a high-profile switch to Ferrari.
The reports suggested the famous Italian marque has been impressed with the Scot's one and a half seasons with Force India and sees him as a potential replacement for the struggling Felipe Massa.
"I have not heard anything about it," the 26-year-old, who is managed by Anthony Hamilton, said in Barcelona.
"I am just concentrating on the job I have to do for Force India. That is my only focus," he is quoted by the
Scottish Sun newspaper.

However, di Resta is widely regarded as having outshone his highly-rated teammate Nico Hulkenberg so far in 2012.
But he denies he is the number one driver.
"(There is) equal opportunity and everybody seizing his chances," di Resta told F1's official website.
As for his dominant position over Hulkenberg, he insisted: "That would be for Nico to answer."
Hulkenberg said on Thursday: "The first four races have been quite tough but I'm looking forward -- I'm bedding in well with the team."
