Our Charger covered lots of miles and bent a wheel in the last month

The traditional four-door sedan long ago fell out of favor as America's family car. Minivans, crossovers, and crew-cab trucks have become the default choice for anyone who has kids in tow. Bucking that trend, copy editor Rusty Blackwell picked our Dodge Charger for a long weekend road trip with his wife and two daughters in early June. With no shortage of crossovers to choose from, Blackwell thought the big sedan was his best bet among our Four Seasons offerings for hauling his brood and their baggage. Having championed the Charger to an All-Star Award last fall, he wasn't let down by his selection.

Carrozzeria America: Moal Coachbuilders
Carrozzeria America: Moal Coachbuilders - Automobile Magazine
Moal Coachbuilders has been hammering metal of one sort or another for a century, but for the latest generation of Moal family craftsmen, it's not what kind of custom cars they build, it's how they build them.

You won't find the place by accident. From the outside, it's just another nondescript commercial building in a nondescript section of Oakland, the kind of area that most cities euphemistically zone as "mixed; light industrial, retail, and residential." None of those three categories seem applicable here. There is no sign on the front of the building, only the barely visible ghost of lettering that once said "Bill Moal and Sons" above the door. Painted over many times through the years, it's now hidden beneath the uniform coat of anonymous gray that at least makes overnight graffiti invasions somewhat easier to rectify.
