Indylight: Q & A with Tristan Vautier

Auto123.com had an exclusive interview with Tristan Vautier, who currently stands second in provisional championship classification.

Tristan, tell us about the last round of the championship, presented in the Iowa Speedway?
That was another great week end in terms of performances. The car was fantastic and I could set a second pole position in-a-row. I could lead the race for 70 laps, but I had a drive-through for blocking another driver while defending my position and that dropped me down one lap behind the new leader. I could get back in the leading lap, in fifth position, and take advantage of a yellow flag in the last part of the race to take fourth at the finish line.

Are you now comfortable with the oval tracks?
Yes, I've been comfortable on the three oval tracks we ran on this season, with two pole positions, and leading each race.

What are the main specificities of this kind of race, how do you have to set the car up, and how do you have to manage the race itself?
We try to have a car with the lowest understeering possible, to have to turn the wheel as little as possible in the corners, and to not slow the car down too much. It is difficult to find the limit between a car which has a lot of grip at the front, but does not sleep too much from the back. Another difficulty is the qualifying, where we have only one warm-up lap before two flying laps. You have to be quickly in the pace, and comfortable with cold tires.

Talking about the season from the begining, how did you manage your move from Star Mazda to Indylight?
The transition went well. I have a great team around me that has learned me very well the style of driving this car. But I still have much to learn.

Did you expect to perform so well from your very first race?
I didn't have a particular target, I had no particular expectations. I focused on my work more than on the result I wanted to achieve, and worked a lot with my engineer Chris to learn quickly.

Can you tell us about your most serious rivals?
I think they are quite simple to indentify ! Esteban Guerrieri, Sebastien Saavedra and myself have been very close since the begining of the season. They are very fast, experienced and do not make mistkes, but many drivers are able to fight in front every week end. All the drivers are very competitive this season.

A word about your team Sam Schmidt Motorsport?
This is an incredible team. They know the car by heart, but they keep on working very hard and try to learn even more, to keep an advantage on our rivals. This is a real luxury to run for them, each weekend I know that the only thing I have to do is to focus on my job, and if I make the job, the result will be there.

Do you have any plan for a move to the Indycar championship next season?
I do not think about it for now. I really focus on my work this year because I know that my future will depend in part on my place in the final championship classification this year.

Australian V8: ”Tough day” for Jacques Villeneuve

The Canadian driver spent his four practice sessions to re-aquatinting himself with the art of changing gears with his left hand.

"It was a tough day, but there is a lot to learn; the track, the cars, using my left hand to shift, working on the seat, plus a lot going on today,” Jacques Villeneuve said.

"The Pepsi Max Crew are all working really hard. Right now is the hard bit, hopefully we will get better throughout the weekend. But racing here this weekend, coming here this weekend, is mainly to learn how things work out here. The Townsville track is quite fun, it's quite busy, you are doing something all the time. It's a tough track to get used to the car because there is no margin for error. That makes the first day of driving the car quite difficult but it's fun and I'm having a blast out there."

Jacques Villeneuve will be back in action on Saturday morning the qualifying session, at 10:30 am, local time.

F1: Sebastian Vettel denies safety car conspiracy theory

From GMM

Sebastian Vettel has denied ever suggesting the FIA deployed the safety car at Valencia as a deliberate ploy to spoil his race.

The reigning world champion, and Red Bull's Dr Helmut Marko, were quoted after the recent European grand prix as implying that Charlie Whiting only neutralised the race to deliberately curb Vettel's runaway race lead.

Shortly after the safety car period, ostensibly to clear crash debris from the track, the furious Vettel's RB8 failed.

Asked about his reported conspiracy theory, the German said on Thursday: "What I said is that, in my opinion, there was no reason for the safety car to be on the track. Then I said that it ruined my race.

"I never said that it was (deployed) to ruin my race," he is quoted by Brazil's O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper.

"That was written by those who have the habit of removing important parts (of quotes) to make it more sensational. I have reviewed the race and I still have the same opinion, but I do not dispute the decision of the officials. They always have more information than we do in order to make their decisions. Agree or not, I always respect them," said Vettel.

Vettel's apparent backtracking follows reports last week that the FIA was unamused by the reigning back-to-back title winner's post-race comments.

2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque - No Surprises
2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque - Four Seasons Update - June 2012 - Automobile Magazine
Our first few months with our Four Seasons Evoque have been less about shock and more about meeting our (mostly high) expectations.

The Range Rover Evoque is by definition a surprising vehicle: who could have expected such a sultry, sleek vehicle from rugged, no-nonsense Land Rover? That said, our first few months with our Four Seasons Evoque have been less about shock and more about meeting our (mostly high) expectations. "I spent a week with the Evoque and, surprise, surprise, I quite liked it," reports deputy editor Joe DeMatio after his first turn with the car. "The turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder is pretty much amazing, which is what I remember from driving an Evoque at high speeds last October during our Automobile of the Year testing, where Range Rover snagged an All-Star award."
