Back to its roots.

Jeep Wrangler owners are an interesting group. Even the slightest change made in the name of creature comfort is likely to set off the die-hards. Luckily, the changes Jeep bestowed upon the 2013 Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition are functional and aimed right at the guys who would take a brand new Wrangler off-road before the first monthly payment is due.

At this year's Los Angeles auto show, it seems that BMW X1s are everywhere. A cute blue vehicle I passed looked just like an X1 SUV. Actually, it was a Mazda CX-5 that resembled an X1 from the side, but had a nose and tail different than the X1.

Rare Saab models up for bid

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
From now to December 16th, Saab is offering car collectors around the world a unique opportunity to acquire models that have never been available for sale before. Most of them exist in only a few examples.

Among the 68 cars are two copies of the 2011 Saab 9-3 Cabriolet Independance Edition, which celebrated Saab's first year as an independent car manufacturer. The plan was to build 366 units, but only 38 ever made it out of the factory.

The company is also auctioning 18 of just 30 Saab 9-5 NEW SportCombis and 29 of 54 Saab 9-5 New Sedan models that were produced. Moreover, there are ten copies of the Saab 9-4X crossover utility vehicle including the car with chassis number 1 for the European market.

Finally, collectors can bid on one of the three existing Saab 9-3 SportCombis in Sky Blue, as well as the Saab 9-5 Aero V6 300hp automatic that was used by CEO Victor Muller.

The greatest of all time

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Once again I want to write about rallying and particularly Sébastien Loeb's remarkable WRC career.

Many F1 aficionados will tell you that Michael Schumacher is the greatest race car driver of all time. NASCAR fans will counter with Dale Earnhardt, and those who crave endurance races like the 24 Hours of Le Mans will convince you that there has never been someone like Tom Kristensen.

While I'm not a die-hard rallying fan, I must admit that Loeb's accomplishments are quite mind-boggling.

The man the French call ''E.T.'' has won on all types of terrain, in all weather conditions. He has turned many Citroëns into world champions, out-performed every teammate he's ever had, and very seldom cracked under the pressure.

Heck, Loeb won a world title while he was not even racing for Citroën's official team!

Loeb also made a huge mark on road courses. He dominated in GT class and the Porsche Cup, finished second at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2006, and even drove a Red Bull F1 car without looking like a fool.

He's the quintessential driver -- fast, sure-handed and confident behind any steering wheel.

Loeb achieved all that while staying down to earth and never becoming full of himself. He's remained straightforward, accessible, friendly and respectful of fans, which is rare in today's auto racing world.

In addition to being super-fast, Loeb is extremely smart and shrewd. Rather than blindly charging ahead, he expertly flirts with the car's limits -- and his own -- without ever exceeding them.

How fitting that Loeb is partially retiring from the WRC as the undisputed leader. He's going out on top after winning the last round of the 2012 season and earning a record ninth consecutive world title.

Let this WRC win table speak for itself:

1. Sébastien Loeb, 76
2. Marcus Grönholm, 30
3. Carlos Sainz, 26
4. Colin McRae, 25
5. Tommi Makkinen, 24
6. Juha Kankkunen, 23
7. Marku Alen, 20
8. Didier Auriol, 20
9. Hannu Mikkola, 18
10. Miki Biasion, 17

Awesome work, champ!
