Recall on certain Yokohama tires

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Yokohama has issued a recall on 499 Avid Touring S tires (215/65R16) that were manufactured in 2009.

The lower sidewall could crack due to a manufacturing defect, possibly resulting in a slow loss of tire pressure. If left in service, the crack/separation could grow and rapid air loss could occur, jeopardizing vehicle control and increasing the risk of a crash.

Moreover, pieces could detach from the rim and strike a vehicle, property, or a bystander.

Yokohama retailers will replace affected tires.

2013 Chevrolet Equinox AWD LTZ First Impressions

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Power Boost
New for the 2013 Chevrolet Equinox is a boost in ponies under the hood. Powering the V6 model is now a 3.6L engine that has 301 horsepower and 272 lb-ft of torque. That replaces the current 3.0L V6 rated at 264 horsepower and 222 lb-ft of torque. However, highway fuel economy -- for the front-wheel drive model -- remains unchanged at an estimated 8.1L/100km.

Does the extra juice under the hood make that big of a difference? Heck, yes! The 2013 Chevrolet Equinox feels more spirited and lively to drive. While that might seem like an obvious observation, there are cases where there's been an increase in power and the car just feels the “same.”

2013 Chevrolet Equinox AWD LTZ

Can you handle this?
A new FE2 suspension package is coupled with the 3.6L V6 and is offered with 18” or 19” chrome-clad wheels on LTZ models of the 2013 Chevrolet Equinox. What does that mean for the operator? A smoother handling ride that feels more confident on the pavement. And with the AWD, you can take it off the beaten path and still be OK.

Entertained for the drive home
On the 2013 Chevrolet Equinox AWD LTZ trim, there's an available rear-seat, dual-player DVD entertainment system with displays in both seat backs and dual wireless headphones ($1,295). Popping in a movie during a long drive can eradicate the “Are we there yet?” interrogation that proves annoying to both the driver and other passengers. Just ask my friends! Then again, sitting in the back seat of this vehicle proved cozy enough, so I don't see discomfort to be a huge issue. If the DVD doesn't lessen the whining, perhaps a warm glass of milk with cookies might do the trick. If not, there's always the bus.

Inside story
Perhaps redundancy is getter the better part of me, but I can't help but comment on how much better Chevrolet interiors are these days. And they keep getting better. Slip inside the cabin of the 2013 Chevrolet Equinox and you're greeted by tones and textures that work well with each other. The centre stack is inviting, and the controls are easily recognizable. Further adding to the cabin's functionality are the standard MultiFlex rear seats. They allow the seat to be moved fore or aft 200 millimetres (7.9”) for best-in-class rear legroom.

MyLink in your car
Chevrolet's infotainment system, MyLink, along with navigation is yet another perk of this vehicle. Perhaps one of the most straightforward systems on the market, it acts as an extension of your smartphone. Not to mention the blend of pretty colours that comprise the various images are also pleasant to look at. The high-resolution, 7” touchscreen only enhances an already appealing inside.

Gimme chrome
What would a Chevy be without its flashy bits? Chrome bits, that is. On top of the aforementioned rims, there are also various accents on the grille, window frames and the nether regions of this five-seater vehicle. Not to mention the accents inside the 2013 Chevrolet Equinox, as well.

Whether on the inside or the out, the 2013 Chevrolet Equinox LTZ AWD is a fine piece of GM engineering. My first impressions are, obviously, quite positive.

Formula 1 to be hit by new technical controversy?

From GMM

A new controversy about flexible front wings is set to emerge, according to Germany's Auto Motor und Sport.

The magazine said McLaren has developed a front wing which moves around the horizontal axis, with Red Bull following suit with a similar idea that appeared in Singapore recently.

The report said the FIA, despite clamping down on past 'flexi wing' sagas by ramping up the scrutineering tests, will study the latest designs closely this weekend at Suzuka.

Auto Motor und Sport reported that Ferrari complained to the governing body about the latest designs, prompting "several discussions" between FIA officials and McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh.

However, Autosport Wednesday that Whitmarsh has denied talk that his outfit has had any dialogue with the FIA over the matter.

The magazine's analysis said the secret of the new wings is the supporting pillars, which allow the wing to twist about the transverse axis.

Red Bull was the first to recognise the trick, launching a slightly longer nose in Singapore allowing an "even more extreme" wing movement than on the McLaren.

The rotation of the front wing decreases drag on the straightaways, aloowing the car to reach a higher top speed.

Auto Motor und Sport said the FIA's reaction could be to introduce a 'torsion' test.

McLaren's Whitmarsh on Wednesday played down the story.

"From time to time questions and disputes arise between teams, who feel that other teams are too flexible or whatever," he said during the regular Vodafone teleconference.

"I don't envisage any particular problems for McLaren in that regard, and consequently I don't think that it is anything that will harm us."

2013 Porsche Panamera GTS Review

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Twisting the left-mounted key provokes a startling response from the twin pipes of the Panamera GTS. Its 4.8L V8 fires up with such a sharp, immediate staccato before quickly dropping to a rumbling idle that gangsters dive for cover.

I've always thought that Ford's Mustang GT owned the “Best Auditory” title for a V8 powerplant, but I'm compelled to rescind the bestowment in favour of this week's tester: the 2013 Porsche Panamera GTS.

2013 Porsche Panamera GTS

The meaning of GTS
The Panamera GTS is Porsche's naturally aspirated, high-performance version of their four-door four-seat touring car. It sits between the 4S and the Turbo variants. Through retooling and retuning, Porsche has pulled an extra 30 hp out of the Panamera 4S engine for a total of 430 horsepower @ 6,700 rpm leveraged with 384 lb-ft of torque @ 3,500 rpm.

The only transmission available is Porsche's sophisticated 7-speed dual-clutch PDK which delivers nanosecond swaps that are made even more instantaneous by momentarily deactivating pertinent cylinders to aid in the rapidity. The function also contributes to a wonderful auditory commotion described by Porsche as more “motorsport” sounding -- and I have to agree.

The power that accompanies the magnificent exhaust opus is delivered to all four corners to ensure the immensity breathing beneath the hood is converted to relentless forward motion without a loss of traction.

Launch Control - shock and awe
Have you ever read an owner's manual that instructs the driver to place his/her left foot on the brake and quickly depress the throttle to the floor? Unless it's a Porsche publication, probably not; yet that's what the Panamera GTS manual references under the Launch Control heading.

With the vehicle's Sport Plus mode activated, the car can be launched from a dead stop like a surface-to-air missile. Porsche literature assigns a 0-100km/h time of 4.5 seconds to the GTS, but after experiencing a Launch Control departure, that number seems a little high to me.

This car is brutally fast out of the hole in a space-and-time-warping way. The ferocity holds firm while the PDK hammers one gear after the next with no loss of gravity-defying thrust. In Sport Plus mode, there's no deactivation of cylinders during upshifts, adding to the pile-driving effect of gear changes.

There are few production cars that can match the exhilaration the GTS provokes when shot from the Launch Control barrel, but the car's hostile side can be easily suppressed in favour of comfort and luxury.

The mannered GTS
For all its punctuated rebellious bravado, the GTS has a genteel side that will please those occupants alienated by stark aggression. Opt for its normal driving mode and deselect its performance exhaust, and the big Panamera will exercise its confidence demurely while delivering a highly controlled yet notably comfortable ride, though this process is akin to defusing an atom bomb. Still, for those occasions when restraint trumps arousal, the GTS adapts.

Manners belie athleticism
Regardless of settings, the Panamera GTS can be relied upon to provide the road worthiness and handling capabilities that Porsche is renowned for. I've experienced other Panamera variants on the track and could spend chapter and verse detailing the dynamics that make these large performance machines so capable and rewarding in the hands of novice and pro alike.

They are exceptionally tenacious sleds while being as forgiving as Mother Theresa when apexes are misjudged or speed outstrips ability. The provision of Sport and Sport Plus modes allow drivers to unleash the GTS congruent with their ability to exploit its potential.

For the preponderance of GTS owners, the Sport mode will fulfill expectations -- and then some -- without subjecting them to a world beyond their proficiency.

Wrapping the GTS
In many ways, the GTS is the value leader among the extensive Panamera lineup. It delivers outstanding V8-derived performance accompanied by the most intoxicating auditory track money can buy. Its entry price of $126,700 places it well below the $158,500 tag of the Panamera Turbo and even further below the Turbo S entry point of $200,300.

Whether doused in GTS assertiveness or not, the Panamera truly is a four-person touring car. The two rear seating positions are surprisingly spacious, spoiling occupants with uncompromised comfort. Thanks to its four doors, rear seat ingress/egress is no more difficult than in any typical sedan.

The real beauty in the Panamera GTS, next to its aircraft-like cabin architecture, is its ability to holster its weapon and exercise restraint when discretion is the better part of valour. Beware though, when diplomacy is dispensed with, the GTS is one rebellious powerhouse.

SAAQ launches new ”Don’t Text and Drive” campaign

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Texting behind the wheel is a fast-growing issue that's made countless headlines in recent years. Despite the repeated warnings, a number of drivers keep doing it.

The Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) has just launched a second awareness campaign to alert drivers about the dangers of reading and writing text messages while driving.

Running from September 30th to October 28th, the French-language televised message presents four scenes that show drivers through time. With an approach that combines humour and drama, the ad illustrates how quickly an accident can happen when a driver's attention is diverted by a demanding task such as texting.

Meanwhile, in English, there's a new radio campaign that includes three different ads with the main message: ''Every letter can kill. Don't text and drive.''

You may also be interested in the Focus Mode application that blocks text messages and incoming calls, and sends an “acknowledgement of receipt” message to the person who tried to contact you.
Of course, the app will only work when activated.

The bottom line again: Don't text and drive!
