Canadian NASCAR: A win and a championship for D.J. Kennington

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
D.J. Kennington won the 2012 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series championship by earning the ultimate victory at the Pinty's 250 presented by Dodge, at Kawartha Speedway.

For the veteran stock car racer it was a series' high seventh win in more than 12 races this season.

Kennington took the lead from pole sitter J.R. Fitzpatrick on Lap 231 and was never bothered afterward by any of his other challengers. Fitzpatrick had led a race-high 216 laps, losing the lead only after a pitstop and when Kennington overtook him for the race-winning pass.

Runner-up Andrew Ranger finished second in front of Fitzpatrick. Peter Shepherd III and Martin Roy rounded out the top five. Roy entered the weekend having already clinched the Rookie of the Year honors.

Kennington took the points lead early in the season on the strength of a five-race winning streak and finished it off with back-to-back victories. He ended 27 points ahead of Fitzpatrick and 35 over Ranger. Steckly and Ron Beauchamp Jr. were fourth and fifth, respectively.

The new NCTS champion will be honoured along with NASCAR's other touring series champions on Saturday, Dec. 8 at the NASCAR Touring Series Awards at the Grand Ballroom of the Charlotte Convention Center at the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 Review

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
I no longer wonder what it would be like to be hit by Raffi Torres -- because smashing down on the rightmost pedal in the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is pretty much the same thing.

Partly, that's why generating a fair and comprehensive review of this factory-tuned, track-ready sport 'ute is going to be a bit of a problem. Turns out, the lung-squeezing acceleration, 20” wheels, heat extractors, Brembo brakes, and lowered suspension have deactivated the cupholder, comfort and legroom receptors in the car-reviewer side of my brain.

Plus, I returned it two weeks ago, and the exhaust note is still playing in my head.

2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8

Performance first
Yes: The Grand Cherokee SRT8 has side airbags, a big trunk and can haul your sailboat off to the cottage. But it's also got acceleration that rivals a drag-car on slicks, and makes noises like automatic gunfire when you dip into the sauce. Whenever you're so inclined, it'll peel the faces off everyone on board with its massive acceleration and cornering grip.

And unlike high-dollar rocket 'utes from Germany (BMW X5M, Porsche Cayenne Turbo, et al.), there's nothing discreet about the Grand Cherokee SRT8's looks. While moving, it's only slightly less intimidating than a road-going scud missile.

So, yeah. I couldn't care less about the navigation system. Or the heated seats. Or the 120-volt power outlet in the back seat. Or the power tailgate.

SRT Power
Under the hood-mounted heat extractors, Chrysler's latest SRT V8 engine cranks out 475 horses. That's 50 more than the last-generation engine -- an increase facilitated mainly by punching the thing out to a highly effective 6.4 litres. This engine has one camshaft and makes power the old fashioned way: by being massive.

The big V8 awakens from its slumber with a loud, almost offensive belch. Rev it up, and small creatures nearby run for cover. The entire thing exhales through a set of dual exhausts with pipes big enough to stuff your fist into. It's delightfully, ridiculously American.

Almost too fast
It's also very, very fast. The 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 would have any number of high-dollar, two-seat posh-rockets for lunch at a traffic light. Even with the family on board, all while switching gears like a late-'80s Dodge pickup with a shift kit, thanks to the beefed up five-speed automatic.

This is the only SRT vehicle with All Wheel Drive (AWD). That means it's the only one you can use all year round. It also means there's no spin, slippage or drama when coming off the line at full blast. Combined tire width at each axle on par with a 50-gallon barrel helps, too. Full throttle, it feels like you've been rear ended by a dump truck. Or body checked by Mr. Torres.

And if all the acceleration and sound effects weren't enough, drivers can even pick “Sport” or “Track” mode from a console-mounted dial to crank up various systems and make the SRT8 even more threatening to their license.

Family-ready handling weapon

But make no mistake; this isn't a mere rocket-propelled drag racer.

On a handling course, I noted quick steering and a tight suspension that worked towards a flat, confident dynamic when you rip it around. This SRT8 isn't “handling on rails” planted, but instead favours a slightly slippery, tail-happy dynamic that adds a lively feel and keeps drivers grinning.

So it's impressive not only for its grippiness, but also for how it dances around when you push your luck a little.

And with instant lift-off oversteer and tightly controlled body movements, the SRT8 really puts on a hell of a show. It's flattering and predictable and extremely competent at its limit. Driven hard, the SRT8 still makes drivers feel as though they're at the reins of a wild beast -- but one that's at least, to some degree, interested in behaving itself. The Brembo brakes could offer a bit more feedback, but stopping power is crushing and fade-free. (The red brake calipers are a safety feature, if the wife asks.)

If there's a more capable, track-ready and entertaining sport 'ute than this one, I don't know what it is.

Day-to-day friendly
Engineers managed all of that without ruining the ride on the road. The suspension is firm and keeps the wheels sprung tightly against the SRT8's body -- meaning the ride can get a bit busy and bouncy on some surfaces. But, relative to the available handling, it's pretty easygoing indeed. The very quiet ride and luxurious, family-ready spaciousness found in the standard Grand Cherokee remain for this one, too.

As an all-around performance weapon you can use any day you like, this thing largely nails it.

Just watch your right foot, as fuel mileage can easily exceed 20L/100km if you don't. Mind you, that's irrelevant -- because the performance this machine puts on is priceless.

If you've got a family, like going really fast, know a good traffic lawyer and enjoy turning premium unleaded into really cool sound effects, you need to get some test-drive time in one of these.

F1: Pedro de la Rosa voices complain over Singapore GP length

From GMM

F1 drivers have in the past asked the governing body to reduce the length of the Singapore grand prix.

Hot, humid and under artificial lights on a demanding street circuit, the event is regarded as perhaps the toughest physically on the entire 20-race F1 calendar.

Spanish veteran Pedro de la Rosa confirmed that description, even though this weekend is actually the HRT driver's very first competitive taste of the Marina Bay layout.

"But I have been in several meetings of the GPDA and it is the only world championship circuit where there were people asking Charlie Whiting to reduce the number of laps," he is quoted by Marca sports newspaper.

De la Rosa said Singapore is like Monaco in terms of "effort and concentration", with the big difference being "humidity and distance".

"Here (the race) is 309 kilometres, Monaco is 260," he explained.

F1: Robert Kubica linked with Pirelli test driver role

From GMM

Robert Kubica could step up his quest to return to formula one by becoming official tyre supplier Pirelli's next test driver.

The Italian marque's current main tester, Jaime Alguersuari, is tipped to return to the paddock with a competing team in 2013.

Pole Kubica, regarded as one of F1's most talented contemporaries until his early-2011 rallying crash, recently returned to competitive action after a 19-month recuperation with a couple of minor Italian rally outings.

The 27-year-old fared well, but Kubica has said he is unlikely to attempt a full return to F1 until at least 2014, due to the reduced mobility of his right arm at present.

But Pirelli's Paul Hembery told Auto Motor und Sport he might be open to Kubica becoming the official F1 tyre tester in 2013.

"It's a possibility," said the Briton.

"I don't know if he's in a position to do the job at the moment, but he is definitely the kind of driver that we are looking for."

Hembery admitted he has not spoken to Kubica "for some time".

But "If he is physically capable, and spends a year with us, it would for sure bring him into a good position to maybe return (to racing) in 2014.

"It would be really great if we could do that," he added.

F1 Singapore: Lewis Hamilton secures third pole in four races (+results)

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
McLaren's Lewis Hamilton was quickest of the qualifying session ahead of the 2012 Singapore Grand Prix.

The Briton will be joined on the front row for the start of the race by Williams' Pastor Maldonado.

Reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull), only took third, despite dominating all three free practice sessions this weekend.

Lewis Hamilton's McLaren teammate Jenson Button took fourth, ahead of championship leader Fernando Alonso (Ferrari). A surprising Paul di Resta (Force India) sits in sixth position.

Mark Webber (Red Bull) currently holds on to seventh, but could be thrown a few spots back for getting in the way of Timo Glock (Marussia) during Q1.

Romain Grosjean (Lotus), in eighth, was the slowest driver to set a time in Q3. Mercedes' Michael Schumacher (9th) and Nico Rosberg (10th) opted to save their tires.

Only few drivers managed to stay out of the barriers for the duration of the session : Hamilton, Grosjean, Bruno Senna (Williams) had the most memorable moments with the wall.

Nico Hulkenberg (Force India), Kimi Raikkonen (Lotus), Felipe Massa (Ferrari), Sergio Perez (Sauber) were the biggest name to fail to make it into Q3.

F1: Mercedes tipped to sign Concorde Agreement

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
From GMM

Mercedes parent Daimler has reportedly decided to stay in formula one beyond 2012.

In Singapore this weekend, rumours swirled in the paddock that the Stuttgart manufacturer is on the verge of pulling the plug.

That, combined with the dithering over the 2012 Concorde Agreement, could explain the long delay in Lewis Hamilton's decision about whether to join the so-called 'Silver Arrows' in 2013.

German sources had reported that Daimler chairman Dieter Zetsche has ordered cost cuts of more than a billion euros in the Mercedes road car division.

That ramped up fears that the F1 programme would also get the axe.

Responding to the rumours, Norbert Haug said in Singapore: "I believe we have already established the right balance with regards to the costs (of competing in F1).

"I say that our budget is reasonable while our results are not good enough," he is quoted by DPA news agency.

Germany's Auto Motor und Sport now reports that Daimler has decided to definitely keep the Mercedes brand in formula one, meaning the new Concorde could be signed as early as next week.

Romain Grosjean's new coach has confirmed he is working with the Lotus driver.

Back on track after his Monza ban, the French driver arrived in Singapore this week with Benoit Campargue, a former Judo champion who coaches France's heavyweight champion Teddy Riner.

Campargue told Le Figaro in Singapore that, while he has been working with Grosjean since March, this is his first grand prix alongside the 26-year-old, who served a one-race ban at Monza recently.

He said they are working on devising better routines for the Lotus driver.

"The important thing is to find the right balance in a natural way," said Campargue.

He told L'Equipe: "I am very pleased with his recovery (since the ban).  I see someone serene and relaxed and at the same time concentrated.

"I must also thank Lotus, who prove that F1 is not always closed."

F1: Singapore confirmed on 2013 calendar

From GMM

Singapore has inked a new contract to remain on the formula one calendar.

There had been some doubt the race organisers would agree Bernie Ecclestone's sanctioning fee demands for a new deal beyond this weekend's highly popular night race.

But the F1 chief executive said at the official announcement on Saturday: "We are here for another five years".

Ecclestone admitted the negotiations had been "difficult", because everyone in the entire sport "without exception likes being here".

Tourism minister S Iswaran said Singapore has indeed managed to reduce the financial impact of the event by agreeing a "revised" fee.

"We eventually got there," agreed Ecclestone.
