Maria de Villota could leave Addenbrook's hospital in Cambridge (UK) and return to her native Spain by the end of the week, Germany's Auto Motor und Sport reports.

Marussia's 32-year-old female test driver has been in the hospital since losing her right eye after the horror accident at Duxford airfield early last week.

De Villota's sister Isabel said on Monday that Maria has moved out of the intensive care unit, after Marussia chief John Booth revealed she had emerged from an artificial coma to speak to her family.

Auto Motor und Sport reported: "Except for the blindness in her right eye, the chances are good that there is no (other) permanent damage."

De Villota has had two operations at Addenbrook's, and the German publication added: "If there are no further complications, de Villota could return to her native Spain late this week."

2012 Audi S5 coupe Review

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
The 2012 Audi S5 has the sort of elegant, understated good looks that slip serenely beneath the radar of those who prefer their status symbols in a more ostentatious package.

2012 Audi S5 Coupe

I stepped directly into the Audi S5 from the TT RS, and although both vehicles wore the same familiar interlinked rings on their Germanic snouts, they couldn't have been more different.

The TT RS is a hormonal youth, raucous, quivering and vibrating with urgency - its curvaceous aluminum body finished in a racy spoiler.

The S5 on the other hand, has a timeless simplicity, it's a refined, yet handsome coupe with clean lines and tidy profile. There's little to suggest that this understated coupe is the German equivalent of a muscle car.

Audi's long been the benchmark for auto interiors. As expected, the S5's cabin is quietly tasteful and well-crafted from top-notch materials. Dash layout is simple and clean, with crisp bright gauges. There's all the requisite cosseting befitting a $75,000 luxury car - this particular model has $8,000 in options, including: Audi Drive Select with quattro sport differential, navigation system with backup camera, Carbon Atlas trim, cushy leather upholstery, memory seats and start/stop button.

The revised Multi Media interface is simpler to use, yet still requires tearing the eyes from the road to operate. Call me old-fashioned, but I prefer the simple 3-knob HVAC system in the TT RS to scrolling endlessly through various screens just to keep my feet warm.

The 14-speaker Bang and Olufsen earns whole-hearted approval for its crystalline resonance. Leather seats are nicely bolstered, infinitely comfortable and embossed with signature S5 logos. Rear seats are comfortable, but in typical coupe fashion, the raked roofline does encroach on headroom.

Tacking on an "S Line" badge to anything in the Audi lineup ramps up the performance, elevating it from luxury cruiser to sportier corner carver.

Based on the more sedate four-cylinder A5, there are few external cues, aside from discreet badging, to hint at the S5's potent character. Push the "start" button however, and the unmistakeable rumble of a big V8 roaring to life ensues.

Although the cabriolet version of the S5 receives a supercharged V6, under the S5 coupe's hood lies a 4.2L, 354 hp V8. Numbers-wise, that puts it behind competitors BMW M3 at 414 hp and the Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG at 451.

As a pure driver's machine, the telepathically agile Bimmer comes out ahead. But the S5 pulls strongly enough throughout the powerband and its lusty full-throttle bark is positively thrilling on downshifts. Power is routed through a six-speed Tiptronic transmission, which does a more than adequate job of switching gears, but is nowhere near as engaging as the 7-speed DSG (available only on the cabriolet) - or the six-speed manual.

The lack of paddle shifters is puzzling in a sports-oriented coupe and knocking the shift lever back and forth isn't satisfying nor intuitive enough to bother. There is an optional six-speed transmission for those purists who insist on rowing through gears themselves.

Our S5 tester came equipped with the $4,000 Audi Drive Select package featuring quattro sport differential which directs power and torque wherever its most needed - greatly enhancing its traction and cornering abilities. As a result, the S5 feels balanced and neutral on tight twisties and its quattro sure-footedness was confidence-inspiring during one of our last spring blasts of treacherous weather.

Audi's adaptive Drive Select system allows the driver, at the push of a button, to choose between comfortable luxury cruiser, and stiffer, higher-revving sports car. The settings, Comfort, Automatic and Dynamic, modify the suspension, throttle response, transmission shift points and steering feel. Choose "Dynamic" and the S5's character becomes sharp, firm and urgent. Opt for "Comfort" and the ride is buttery and sublimely cushioning.

There's a fat, grippy, leather-wrapped wheel connected to sharp, fairly communicative steering that does at times however, feel a bit over-boosted and light.

The S5 is a perfect compromise between luxury and sportiness. (Photo: Lesley Wimbush)

The S5 is of course, well-equipped with the latest in high-tech safety, including adaptive cruise control and emergency braking. There's a warm feeling of being well-looked after while driving luxury cars of this caliber, and I've particularly grown to appreciate such niceties as side-mirror blind spot warnings and adaptive headlights.

The S5 is a perfect compromise between luxury and sportiness. Neither full-on performance car, nor soft tourer, it manages to strike a nice balance between the two in an elegant, refined package.

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Of the twelve teams that compete in this year's Formula 1 World Championship, only one has been a fixture of the series since its creation in 1950. You guessed it right: Ferrari. But what's the genesis of the other 11 teams?

RED BULL
Team born as Stewart Grand Prix in 1997, then sold to Jaguar, and then to Red Bull.

McLAREN
Team created by Bruce McLaren in 1966. Sold to Ron Dennis and other investors at the end of 1980.

FERRARI
Team created by Enzo Ferrari. Has not changed since 1950.

MERCEDES AMG
Team created as Tyrrell in 1970. The name and assets were purchased by Craig Pollock in 1998 as a base for British American Racing. Team then sold to Honda, then to Ross Brawn and finally to Mercedes.

LOTUS
Team created as Toleman in 1981. Sold to Benetton at the end of 1985. Then sold to Renault, then to Genii which named it Lotus.

SAHARA FORCE INDIA
Team founded in 1991 by Eddie Jordan. Team sold to Midland, then to Spyker and finally to Vijay Mallya who named it Force India.

SAUBER
Team created in 1993 by Peter Sauber. Howver, the team was the property of BMW between 2006 and 2010.

TORO ROSSO

WILLIAMS
Team founded by Frank Williams in 1975. Has not changed since despite the arrival of minor investors.

CATERHAM
This team replaced USF1 in 2010 when it became clear that the American team would not be able to compete the following year. First ran under the Lotus Racing name until it was changed to Team Lotus and then Caterham for 2012.

HRT
Team born as Campos in 2010, but sold immediately and renamed Hispania Racing Team. Sold again and named HRT at the end of 2011.

MARUSSIA
Originally created as Manor Grand Prix in 2010, but renamed Virgin when billionnaire Richard Branson became a sponsor. Then, sold to small Russian sports car manufacturer Marussia.

The Mercedes SLS takes its first wins in the GT1 world championship, with the victories of both team Munnich's pair : Basseng/Winkelhock and Pastorelli/Jager at Portimao.

Both AF Corse's Ferrari blocked the front row of the grid after the qualifying session. Markus Winkelhock, who started from third position on his Mercedes SLS moved up to second in the first part of the race, then the SLS emerged in the lead after the mandatory pit stop. His team mate Marc Basseng then pulled away in front to secure the first win for Mercedes with a eight second margin over Buurman and Bartels' BMW Z4.

Historic road circuit of Mont-Tremblant provides two days of tough racing; double winner moves out to 18-point lead in the championship.

The Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Michelin made its first trip to the picturesque Circuit Mont-Tremblant for the fourth and fifth rouonds of its nine-race schedule.

Going in to the weekend, Jean-Frederic Laberge held a slim four-point lead in the standings over second-place Etienne Borgeat. The two series leaders lined up side-byside on the front rowfor Race 1 with points leader Laberge on pole.

The two battled it tout until Laberge missed a high-speed corner and slammed his Porsche in the tire barries, forcing him into retirement.

Borgeat led the race until the checkered, finishing first ahead of Carlos de Quesada and Marco Cirone.

Sunday's Race 2 was an echo of Saturday's feature, with drivers increasing the drama and creating some ‘pushing and shoving' as the GT3 Cup Canada competitors challenged the blind apexes, elevation changes, and high-speed corners of the circuit.

Not even the first corner was navigated before multi-car contact ended the day of both Carlos de Quesada and Jeff Pabst setting the on-track tone for the day and bringing out the second full-course-caution of the season.

The SpeedMerchants team of Jean-Frederic Laberge was able to perform significant repairs overnight to his heavily damaged car from Race 1.

The trio of Laberge, Cirone, and Borgeat were engaged for most of the race. Cirone chased Laberge looking for any opportunity or chance to tuck a wheel beneath his SpeedMerchants opponent, while Laberge watched his engine temperature continue to rise from what must have been unseen damage from Saturday.

Borgeat first passed Cirone and then moved ahead of Laberge, having to watch the dangerously high water temperature of his engine.

Borgeat won the race from Laberge who made it to the finish and Cirone.

Ford’s three-cylinder EcoBoost a small but mighty game-changer

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
DEARBORN, Michigan - There's more than one way to fight the battle of rising fuel costs. Hot on the heels of its "Power of Choice" tour, where Ford showcased a traveling selection of its most fuel-efficient vehicles, from full-on electric, parallel and plug-in hybrids right up to the conventional yet ultra-efficient EcoBoost engines, comes Ford's latest offering: a tiny one-litre, 3-cylinder engine delivering hybrid-like fuel numbers.

Technology's come a long way in transforming such small powerplants from the noisy, thrashy unbalanced examples of the past to their current level of sophisticated efficiency. Weighing "about 200 lbs" (or 90.7 kg), Ford's 1.0L EcoBoost eschews the typical aluminum block in favour of a tiny cast-iron piece, all in the name of compactness. This also aids in quicker warm-up time, which reduces gas consumption and emissions.

Ford Ecoboost engine
Photo: Lesley Wimbush

To counteract the inherent lack of balance in the three-pot mill - rather than increase the weight by using an energy-draining balancing shaft - the 1.0L EcoBoost uses a slightly unbalanced flywheel and pulley. A combined cylinder head/exhaust manifold design lets the engine's cooling system help reduce exhaust gas temperatures, thus eliminating the need to enrich the fuel-to-air ratio under load and lowering fuel consumption. The tiny turbocharged EcoBoost also features twin variable camshaft timing and slick coatings on internal parts to reduce friction.

Recently named 2012 International Engine of the Year, the 1.0L EcoBoost comes in two variations: 123 hp and 98 hp, the latter being available in the European Focus. With the less powerful version boasting 4.8L/100km, the EcoBoost will be a global game-changer in the fuel economy wars. To get an idea of just how impressive those figures are - the tiny Scion iQ's 1.3L 4-cylinder has less horsepower at 94 - it delivers a combined fuel consumption rating of 5.1L/100 km.

Ford has confirmed that the 1.0L EcoBoost will arrive here sometime next year, and although they wouldn't say which particular vehicles the engine will be available in, it's safe to assume that the Focus and probably the Fiesta are likely choices.

We were given the opportunity to try a couple of European-spec, 123-hp models on Ford's Dearborn, Michigan test track. Equipped with six-speed manuals, the power delivery felt fairly reasonable and with 125 lb-ft of torque available, the 3-cylinder Focus felt very much like driving the Fiesta, if only slightly less powerful.

At low speeds, the engine was fairly quiet, and although the size of the track and the duration of the test drive didn't really allow us to make a fair assessment - it didn't seem to exhibit any of the buzziness expected from a three-pot engine. While obviously no track star, the three-cylinder Focus was livelier than expected.

Suffice it to say, while the newest EcoBoost is unlikely to appeal to enthusiasts, the fuel-conscientious will be pleasantly surprised by its performance.

F1: Mark Webber expects equal status for 2012 battle

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
From GMM

Mark Webber insists he is not worried Red Bull will ignore his bid for the 2012 world championship.

With two wins to his name now, the Australian is Fernando Alonso's closest challenger for the title, and a full 16 points ahead of Red Bull's reigning double world champion Sebastian Vettel.

But in 2010, the 35-year-old sensed he was not racing on a level playing field, famously declaring his Silverstone win was "not bad for a number two driver" and earlier slamming his glass on the table after answering a question about driver equality.

Mark Webber, however, insists things will be different in 2012.

"They (Red Bull) know that this year's championship is so open that we don't have the luxury of maybe just seeing how the season might unfold if you put the energy and the focus on one car," he is quoted by the Melbourne newspaper The Age.

Asked if he thinks he will enjoy equal number one status with Vettel, Webber added: "Yes, I believe that, for sure."

Team consultant Dr Helmut Marko told Sport Bild: "There will be no team orders; the drivers can race freely."

And boss Christian Horner added: "Having both drivers competing for the title is a good headache to have."

But it's uncharted waters for Vettel, as he pushes to restore his old status as the Red Bull favourite.

Bild newspaper said after the British grand prix that the 25-year-old German is current "nothing more than the number two".

Sebastian Vettel insisted: "It's too early to start counting up points."

The next generation of Mazda's midsize car was initially scheduled to make its debut at the 2012 Paris Auto Show in September, but it now appears that Moscow will serve as the launch pad about a month earlier.

Executives insist that the new Mazda6 won't be a copy of the striking TAKERI concept, however.

The 2014 Mazda6 will likely go on sale in the US sometime in 2013. Stay tuned for Canadian availability.

Canadian Touring: Marc-Antoine Camirand steals the show in Mont-Tremblant

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Marc-Antoine Camirand (BMW 330i) got his consecutive wins tally up to four this weekend by clinching both Canadian Touring Car Championship (CTCC) rounds held this past weekend in Mont-Tremblant.

"Another perfect weekend! But this time, it was much closer," admits Camirand.

All weekend long, he had Mathieu Audette (Acura RSX), back behind the wheel, on his tail. Mathieu's brother, Rémy, who drove the car last time out at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, was supposed to sit this round out, but had the chance to race in B-Spec, thanks to Lombardi Honda.

Mathieu took a string of second places, plus the fastest lap of the race on Sunday.

Rémy came in second Saturday, and third Sunday, behind the almighty Nick Wittmer (Honda Fit), who took his seventh and eighth (out of eighth) consecutive wins of the season, in Tremblant.

Jean-François Dumoulin (Honda Fit), in Lombardi's second B-Spec car, swapped positions with Rémy, finishing third on Saturday, and second on Sunday.

Sasha Anis rounded out the top three both times in the Super Touring class.

In Touring, Jacques Bélanger (Honda Civic Si) got full marks. Daniel Blanchette (Honda Civic Si) and PJ Groenke (MINI Cooper S) crossed the finish behind him Saturday, and Michel Sallenbach (MINI Cooper S) and Jocelyn Hébert (Honda Civic Si) on Sunday.

Canadian race car driver Patrick Carpentier last year said that the NASCAR Nationwide race in Montreal was to be his last professional race of his career. However, he changed his mind...

During last year's race, Carpentier was pushed off track by a rival and was forced into retirement. The Joliette, Quebec native was highly disappointed to retire on such a bad note.

However, his fans will be delighted to learn that Carpentier will be back in action one more time. It was announced Tuesday that he will contest in the NAPA Auto Parts 200 NASCAR Nationwide race at circuit Gilles Villeneuve next month.

Matthew Di Leo drove to the win of round five of the Formula Tour F1600 series', held at Mont-Tremblant, Qc. His rival Michael Adams took the top step of the podium over on Sunday, for round 6.

Di Leo won Saturday, besting reigning champion Nathan Blok and eventual winner Adams to the flag. Rookies Jesse Lazare (4th), Guillaume Archambault (9th) and Marc-Antoine Cardin (9th) all made a name for themselves, by finishing in the top 10.

Gord Ross took top honours in Master, but his speed was rewarded only by a bump up the faster class. Because of the 102% rule, Ross will now have to race in Pro.

Sunday saw Adams make it first to the finish and Blok take a second consecutive second place finish. 15-year-old Lazare, in only his second career start, completed the podium.

NASCAR: Danica Patrick to enter Sprint Cup race at Kansas Speedway

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Stewart Haas Racing has announced, in collaboration with Tommy Baldwin Racing, that Danica Patrick will be entered in the Oct. 21 Hollywood Casino 400 to complete her 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series 10-race schedule.

One of the main reasons for choosing that 1.5 mile oval is the extra day of practice being permitted due to the repaving of the facility.

“With the testing rules the way they are, we can't test with her at tracks where NASCAR's top three series compete,” said Greg Zipadelli, SHR competition director and race strategist for Patrick. “That extra day of testing will be huge for her. With the amount of 1.5-mile ovals on the schedule, it made sense to have her compete at Kansas to better prepare her for 2013.”

Patrick made her Sprint Cup debut in the season-opening Daytona 500 Feb. 27 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway and has since competed in the Southern 500 May 12 at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway and the Coca-Cola 600 May 27 at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway.

In her only NASCAR appearance there, last October, she started and finished 15th in the Nationwide Series race. She also has one IndyCar pole (July 2005) at the oval.

“I've always liked racing at Kansas Speedway,” Patrick said. “I think the extra day of testing will be very beneficial, not only to prepare for the race weekend, but to learn for the rest of 2012 and looking ahead to 2013 with Stewart-Haas Racing. The more track time I can get, the better, so I'm happy to be driving the GoDaddy.com Chevy at Kansas.”

While NASCAR says that he failed the test it did not disclose what prohibited substance was found.

Under NASCAR procedures the sample is divided into an “A” and “B” sample.

Anyone, driver, crew member or official has the right to request that the “B” sample is also tested.

Allmendinger's statement reads:

"I have informed NASCAR that I have requested that the 'B' sample be tested, following the steps according to NASCAR's 2012 rule book regarding this situation. I fully respect NASCAR's drug usage policy and the reasons they have it.

I am hoping this can get resolved as quickly as possible so that I can get back to driving the No. 22 Penske Racing Dodge. I am sorry that this has caused such a distraction for my Penske Racing team, our sponsors and fans.

Obviously I would never do anything to jeopardize my opportunity here at Penske Racing or to my fellow drivers. I am very conscious about my training and health and would never knowingly take a prohibited drug."

Earlier in the day Penske Racing Team owner, Roger Penske, said on SiriusXM radio “We're standing behind him until we hear the results.”

Due to the NASCAR suspension Penske Racing announced yesterday that Sam Hornish Jr. who filled in for Allmendinger in Saturday night's Coke Zero 400, will also fill-in at this week's race in New Hampshire.
