From GMM

Monaco's party atmosphere late on Thursday was broken by the sound of an explosion.

Bomb police cordoned off an area of the formula one paddock near the media centre after someone noticed a suspicious plastic package.

Experts detonated it with a controlled explosion just before 10pm, the Press Associated reported.

It also emerges that some spectators suffered minor injuries on Thursday when part of a grandstand collapsed.

The Fords are Here

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Two of our long awaited black beauties have arrived. As you may know from previous blogs of mine, the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) is in the midst of replacing its fleet of Ford Crown Victoria patrol cars.

Decisions have to be made, and it's down to two.

The Taurus-based 2013 Ford Police Interceptor and the 2012 Dodge Charger Pursuit are the two finalists in this automotive standoff. The immediate plan is to acquire two of each for evaluation purposes. They will be deployed throughout the Patrol Division and driven by as many men and women in blue as possible over a couple of months.

The patrol officers will complete an online survey, rating driving dynamics, comfort, performance and other critical aspects of the vehicles. The results will be analyzed and incorporated into determining if the future face of the VPD will be Ford or Dodge driven.

The two Fords are first to arrive. I was introduced to them this afternoon in the basement of a Ford dealership in Vancouver. They looked mean, and eager for business. I got to take a spin in one of them and found it to be light-years ahead of the traditional Crown Victoria.

The new Police Interceptor feels rock-solid and highly responsive in every dynamic over the bloated, lethargic Crown Victoria. But that doesn't mean Ford has stolen the show. We have the Chargers on order, and they should prove highly competitive.

The two Interceptors are AWD units, which is a first in Vancouver for patrol cars. They will remain as black unmarked cars during the evaluation period but will be equipped with emergency lighting, mobile computer, police radio, siren and all the usual tech stuff that finds its way into a modern law enforcement vehicle.

Patrol officers are excited to get their respective hands on the evaluation vehicles. There's no doubt that they'll be driven 24/7, and driven hard. If flaws, weaknesses and deficiencies exist, they will soon become evident.

I'm most excited to assess the fuel savings that the V6 engines will deliver over the V8s presently in use in the Crown Victorias. Less fuel burned equates to less greenhouse gas emissions and less cost to the taxpayer.

I'm also interested in feedback around the AWD capability of the new Fords. While snow is likely out of the question during a Vancouver spring/summer, rain certainly isn't. Along with slick roads, Vancouver is a city of hills, making it an ideal environment for enhanced traction during tactical driving.

I'll be sure to let Auto123.com readers know when the Chargers have arrived. Hopefully, it will be within a few weeks. I see a back-to-back comparison drive in my future.

This is still anybody's standoff to win. There are many less dramatic aspects to consider in the deliberations as well, such as operating costs extrapolated over the service life of the vehicles and residual values, etc.

Many heads will be involved in the distillation of the data and the final decision. Either way, it'll be a milestone in police automotives.

2010 Formula 2 champion Dean Stoneman, who retired from competition in 2011 to fight a cancer, was back to the podiums in boat racing, competing the British P1 Superstock championship.

The young Brit, who was driving a Panther P1 28SS boat, won both races presented last week end in Plymouth, England.

However, Stoneman had declared that he was not planning a full program in boat racing, and expects to be back in car racing in 2013.

2013 Dodge Dart Aero and its fuel economy mission

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Leery that an offshore automaker would only buy Chrysler for its brand names and shut all its American factories, the U.S. Government stipulated that Fiat could only increase ownership in Chrysler if it agreed to certain domestic manufacturing stipulations. One was that the company had to build in America, one vehicle with “an unadjusted combined fuel economy rating of 40 US mpg (5.88L/100km)” as defined by the EPA.

2013 Dodge Dart front 3/4 view
2013 Dodge Dart (Photo: Dodge)

The 2013 Dodge Dart is that vehicle. Or more precisely, the soon-to-be introduced Dodge Dart Aero is that vehicle. Expected sometime in the last quarter of this year, the Aero will feature the 1.4L MultiAir turbo engine, 6-speed manual transmission, low resistance tires, wheel covers, more aluminum, and other various tricks and treats no doubt.

The EPA has not yet released its unadjusted combined fuel ratings for the first Dart models coming this summer. The most fuel-efficient Dart powertain so far introduced — the 2.0L with the 6-speed manual — is very efficient but falls below that EPA target.

Even without the US-manufacturing mandate, it's highly unlikely Chrysler/Fiat would have even considered “importing” a compact car line into North America. It's such a large segment and marketplace, with its own standards and tastes. Most automakers build North-American specific vehicles for large-volume segments.

F1: McLaren set to offer Hamilton $150m – reports

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
From GMM

McLaren is offering Lewis Hamilton a lucrative new contract for 2013 and beyond, British newspapers are reporting from Monaco.

The stories - in all the major dailies including the Guardian, the Telegraph, the Daily Mail, Express, the Star, the Sun, the Mirror and the Times - consistently contradicted an earlier rumour that Hamilton might need to take a pay-cut if he wants to stay with the British team beyond this year.

The Guardian said McLaren has in fact put a five-year, $150 million contract on the table, which combined with bonuses might mean Hamilton overtakes Fernando Alonso as F1's highest paid driver.

"No formal talks have taken place yet ... but it is believed that McLaren ... are ready to make their move," the report read.

The Telegraph concurred, explaining that the new deal might involve a "lower basic salary" but "more control" for Hamilton to sign up his own sponsors.

"It is understood that (his manager) Simon Fuller ... will be in London in July and August ... and negotiations are likely to pick up pace at that point," said that report.

British commentator Martin Brundle said: "Will McLaren allow him some space and some time of his own to sell? I think that will be more of a key factor than a couple of dodgy pit stops, frankly."

The Daily Mail added: "While McLaren are eager to get discussions under way, Hamilton's management are understandably biding their time, given there could yet be opportunities at Mercedes, Red Bull and even Ferrari next season."

The Mirror said McLaren will entice Hamilton to sign for a full five years by offering him "almost a third of the entire ($150m) sum in this final (fifth) year".

The Times' Kevin Eason said the information came from "reliable sources" on the eve of the Monaco grand prix.

2013 Nissan Altima First Impressions

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
NASHVILLE, Tennessee - According to Nissan, this is their biggest car launch to date, and with good reason; the Altima is the brand's volume seller. During the 2011 calendar year, it was their bestselling car in the US; so far in 2012, it's Nissan Canada's sales leader.

2013 Nissan Altima

As usual, when you have a successful car in a competitive and lucrative market segment, you must be extra careful to improve it without screwing it up. And to battle notorious rivals such as the Honda Accord, the Hyundai Sonata, the Toyota Camry and the Ford Fusion, that's what the 2013 Nissan Altima is all about: many improvements here and there, new sheetmetal and an evolutionary step forward.

The US-spec Altima will be built in Nissan's Smyrna assembly plant; however, the Canadian-spec car, which will arrive in dealerships in August, will be built in their Canton, Mississippi plant.

Fuel economy on the rise
The biggest improvement on the 2013 Altima regards its reduced appetite for regular unleaded. The 2.5L 4-cylinder has been revised, now producing 182 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque, up 7 ponies. Nissan claims a highway fuel economy figure of 38 US MPG (up from 32), which equals 6.2L/100km. Here in Canada, we expect the outdated NRCan test procedure should produce a result under 6L/100km for the highway rating.

The 3.5L V6 is also back, still developing 270 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. According to Nissan, only 10% of Altima buyers will choose a 6-cylinder engine.

The continuously variable automatic transmission, or CVT, is now the only choice in the Altima; that's right, no more manual, and if you're asking why, it's because only about 5% of customers previously opted for it.

The CVT gearbox has also been revised; Nissan claims 70% of its parts have been changed, internal friction was reduced, the gear ratio spread has been widened, and its electronic brain now benefits from a higher IQ. It includes a Sport mode in all models, while paddle shifters are added to V6-powered trims.

On the road
We started our journey behind the wheel of a loaded V6 Altima. Smooth, refined, the 3.5L VQ engine failed to set our hearts alive; it felt shy to dive into its low-end torque, probably to maximize fuel, but is nevertheless pretty quick. Some competitors have punchier V6s than the Altima, such as the Mazda6 and the Honda Accord.

The 2.5L 4-banger has enough guts for anybody, but is obviously noisier at wide-open throttle than the V6. In both cases, flooring the throttle summons the new CVT which, in our test cars, curiously dropped revs and climbed back up again at wide-open throttle, as if it was trying to convince you that it was swapping gears. Strange indeed, but nevertheless, the CVT seemed to do an excellent job.

Also noted: the V6 model's manual mode includes seven preset ratios, and at a steady 100 km/h in the 2.5L Altima, the engine spins at only 1,500 rpm.

Something new: included in every Altima is Nissan's new Active Understeer Control system, which brakes the inside front wheel while cornering, to help rotate the car and maintain control of it.

Superbly quiet cabin
During the drive, my colleague and I were amazed at how quiet the Altima has become. With a hushed engine and virtually no suspension or tire noise, we could almost whisper to one another and understand every word.

The Altima's seats have also been revised. The company claims they increase blood flow, decrease muscular load and lower fatigue. We found them comfortable; for the rest of the assertions, well, it's hard to say.

Not in terms of design, but in terms of fit and finish, the Altima's interior is almost Infiniti-esque, obviously more so in the leather-clad SL trim levels. Headroom is slightly down in front and slightly up in back, while legroom and shoulder room have also made small gains. Trunk space is virtually the same as in the old model, now rated at 436 litres.

Trim and pricing breakdown
The 2013 Altima 2.5 will start at $23,698 and includes a trip computer with 4" LCD display, Bluetooth phone and streaming audio connectivity, cruise control and air conditioning. Next up is the $24,898 2.5S, which adds an intelligent key, heated mirrors and automatic headlights.

Pricing will start at $23,698, and can reach $33,698 for loaded trim levels. (Photo: Michel Deslauriers)

The $26,998 2.5SV and $29,698 3.5SV receive alloy wheels (17" and 18" respectively), a remote engine starter, a rearview camera, dual-zone climate control, a power sunroof, heated front seats and NissanConnect. The $29,598 2.5SL and $32,598 3.5SL get leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, a 9-speaker Bose stereo, a power driver's seat, LED taillights, power-folding mirrors with integrated turn signals as well as a more luxurious interior.

For $900, you can get navigation on SV trims, and for $1,100, you can upgrade your SL-trim Altima with navigation, a blind-spot monitor, lane-departure warning and a rear moving object detection system.

On this short preview drive, the new Nissan Altima didn't stir our souls, but it scores on what the typical customer expects of a midsize sedan: plenty of room, a peaceful environment, refinement and fuel economy. Consider the 2013 Altima as the result of a cautious but meaningful evolution.

F1: Nurburgring hopes for new ten-year F1 deal

From GMM

The Nurburgring is hoping to conclude a new ten-year contract to keep hosting formula one every two years.

An official of the German circuit, Kai Richter, is quoted as saying the new ten-year deal on the table will mean at least "five more races" are held at the Nurburgring.

Track operator Jorg Lindner confirmed to SID news agency that the deal had been reached after "difficult negotiations" over "four meetings" with F1's chief executive Bernie Ecclestone.

He described the outcome as "very attractive", but warned that the signatures need to be added by June.

"Otherwise, formula one could be gone (from the Nurburgring) for many, many years," said Lindner.

The Nurburgring annually alternates the German grand prix with Hockenheim.

Never did we think an automaker would actually bring a microscopic Kei car to our shores.

I grew up reading about Japan's microscopic Kei-class cars, but never did I think an automaker would actually bring one to our shores. Lo and behold, Mitsubishi has: its gasoline-powered, jellybean-shaped i may not be sold here, but the electric-powered version -- the i MiEV, or i Powered by MiEV as it's formally known here -- has officially joined Mitsubishi's shrinking North American portfolio.
