Pastor Maldonado insists he has no intention of easing what he describes as an "extremely aggressive" driving style.

Like Romain Grosjean, Williams driver and 2012 Spanish grand prix winner Maldonado was heavily criticised last season for being involved in too many on-track incidents.

One analysis showed he was the driver penalised most often by the FIA in 2012.

But the 27-year-old Venezuelan insisted: "Every time I walk down a hallway in my house and see everything I've got with this style, I think I should continue on this path.

"Yes, I've had run-ins with other drivers, not only now but in the past," Maldonado is quoted by Spain's Marca sports newspaper.

"But I have won in each of the categories in which I have competed. That gives me strength to keep going, because you can always improve," he added.

F1: Romain Grosjean in intense training for the new saison

From GMM

Romain Grosjean has dropped a big hint about Lotus' 2013 plans, revealing the new Enstone-built single seater will be launched late this month.

Speaking to the French sports news programme Stade 2, the Frenchman also revealed that he and continuing Lotus teammate Kimi Raikkonen will equally share the twelve days of pre-season testing in February.

"The next few weeks for me will be intense training, with the presentation of the new car at the end of the month. Then I will have six days of testing in February and then finally the beginning of the season in March," said Grosjean.

Romain Grosjean, 26, also spoke about his tumultuous 2012 season, and his acknowledgement that he needs to maintain his new approach to formula one.

"I do not think winning at all costs is the goal, because the dream is to become world champion one day. Of course it is true that you have to win races to be champion, but I must be careful not to mistake the goal," he added.

"That's what cost me the nickname 'First lap nutcase' last year," Grosjean admitted. "It must be viewed in context. Mark Webber said it straight out of the car in Japan, with all the adrenaline of the race still inside him. I am not crazy, I am aware of the risks and I have worked hard to repair my mistakes. I apologised which is the most I can do. In the last five races I no longer had any problems and there is no reason that I will have them anymore."

Swiss-born Grosjean also admitted that, with Europe in the grip of winter, he is not contractually allowed to do any skiing.

Meanwhile, Ferrari has denied Italian media reports that said the next red single seater will be publicly launched on February 2.

"We will make an announcement when the date is decided," a spokesman insisted.

2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 4MATIC Review

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
The sport-utility vehicle market is a cut-throat one. From cargo space to comfort to off-road capabilities, deciding whether an SUV is the best often comes down to personal choice and brand loyalty as opposed to a "better product" than the rest.

2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 4MATIC

And here's where the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 4MATIC comes on the scene: It's not necessarily better than any other SUV out there, but it does offer some upscale features and that all-important 3-pointed star symbol on the front grille that sets it apart from the rest. However, with an as tested price in the $54,000 range ($44,000 base), its attempt to attract the masses may be in vain.

Manly on the outside and in
If nothing else, the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 4MATIC looks damn good. I absolutely love the strong lines, aggressive front grille with the massive chrome Mercedes logo and the mock push bar (part of the standard AMG Sport Package). Just the right amount of chrome accents are thrown on the exterior to bump up the class factor. The almost-too-small rear spoiler and 20" five twin-spoke wheels add a touch of "sporty" to the overall look, as well.

Step inside the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 4MATIC and that manly, assertive look continues. I immediately thought "military" the moment I sat in the 8-way power adjustable driver's seat. From the symmetrical, mounted buttons on the leather-wrapped steering wheel to the propeller-blade air vents to the button-loaded but oh-so-organized middle console, there's something extremely strict about the interior design - very German. Everything has its place, everything has its purpose and nothing is overdone. And I love it.

While I'm not a huge fan of the Mercedes-Benz COMAND entertainment and navigation system, it's not impossible to use and quite easy to get used to. I also found the placement of the control knob a bit uncomfortable. As I am on the shorter side of the spectrum, my seat has to be pushed farther forward than most, so in order to use the system control knob ahead the middle console arm rest I had to angle my elbow out as it would have met with the end of the seat and my hand would never reach the knob. And because of this, I was required to take my eyes off the road and look down each time I wished to use the knob while driving, just to make sure my arm was angled enough to reach it.

Other than that, the interior of the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 4MATIC is well-built and comfortable for long or short journeys. It also offers a fair amount of cargo space with 450 litres available in the trunk.

A techno-nanny keeps you on track
When it comes to driver assist bits and bobs, I think the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 4MATIC has one of the longest lists I've seen in quite some time: Acceleration Sid Control, ABS, AGILITY CONTROL suspension, hill start assist, ATTENTION ASSIST, PARKTRONIC, active blind spot assist, active lane keeping assist, adaptive highbeam assist, passive lane keeping assist... the list seems to go on and on. And all that's to say: The GLK 350 4MATIC has the technology to make your drive that much easier -- or at least more controlled.

While I appreciate the blind spot assist, rearview camera and adaptive highbeam assist (that automatically dims highbeams if it senses oncoming traffic), the rest is just added fluff and will inevitably turn into expensive repair bills down the road.

One of the better electronic features is Mercedes-Benz new start/stop ECO function that shuts the engine off when you're stopped (in traffic, or at a light) and turns it back on as soon as you take your foot off the brake. This is a fabulous feature for saving both gas and the environment.

Also, Merc's 4MATIC all-time all-wheel drive system is a great feature for our Great White North winters and will keep you well sorted no matter what the weather gods throw your way on the road.

2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 4MATIC

A fair amount of power
Equipped with a 3.5L direct injection V6, the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 4MATIC is good for 302 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. Coupled with Merc's 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission, this GLK is a joy to drive, and I'm not sure that's entirely to do with the engine output and power.

Offered with Mercedes-Benz's STEER CONTROL Electric Power Steering, handling in the GLK is unlike most SUVs. It, thankfully, handles and steers like a car. Steering is precise and you feel connected to the vehicle, even on rougher terrain. This explains, perhaps, why I felt most comfortable off-roading in the GLK as opposed to its larger GL and ML brothers.

2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 4MATIC
This GLK is a joy to drive, and I'm not sure that's entirely to do with the engine. (Photo: Sébastien D'Amour)

A GLK in the driveway
After driving the GLK for a week, I have to say I'm impressed. However, not in an "oh my God I must own one" kind of way, but more in a "I get why there are so many on the road" way. The 2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 4MATIC is a luxurious option to the average-Joe SUV choices currently available, but I'm not quite sure it's worth dishing out the extra dollars to own.

Defensive Driving

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
I've been told I can be an aggressive driver at times. Frankly, I don't think I'm aggressive at all; I'm proactive instead of reactive.

Here's the thing: Defensive driving (aggressive to some) is a good way to keep yourself, and your car, off a flatbed. I was never told to drive this way, nor was I taught when I learned how to drive, took courses, and took my test. Some might associate my driving style with the city in which I live (which is known for its “aggressive” nature on the road).

And again, I'd stipulate that I drive this way to keep myself out of harm's way.

How do I figure that? Well, the perfect example would be my mother (sorry mum): She's an extremely timid driver. She's reactive and not defensive at all. She hesitates before she executes a maneuvre, second-guesses herself and often changes her mind halfway through a move. She's not confident behind the wheel. And that's fine; many drivers aren't. However, her reactive techniques mean she's had more than her fair share of accidents.

I'm not saying she's a bad driver, but she could be much better if she took a more defensive stance behind the wheel, a more confident one.

When I'm behind the wheel, I'm constantly assessing the cars around me. Watching their positioning, calculating who will do what next. I'm not paranoid, I'm anticipating. I'm proactively ensuring I am where I need to be and judging situations based on that.

Not enough drivers do that, and it's extremely clear.

Defensive Driving

Even something as simple as changing lanes can become suddenly dangerous if not executed correctly. Short of actually checking your mirrors and blind spots (something not enough drivers do either, sadly), there's the timing of it all. Something as simple as having a bit of speed to prevent the driver you are entering in front of slamming on his brakes to maintain the flow of traffic is a good skill to acquire.

I am not aggressive on the road, however, I do look out for my own interests. I'm also not afraid to let you know when you've done something wrong (read: honk or flash my lights). I don't have rage issues, but I do get incensed when drivers do not consider those around them (another skill of a defensive driver).

Reactive drivers only “react” when it's too late, hence the accidents. My proactive approach ensures I see the moves that will cause my demise before they even occur -- something I wish they could, and would teach in driver's ed. Sure, a quick reaction time in general is a good thing, but when that reaction is in vane (and could have been prevented two or three moves ahead on the road), it becomes too little too late.

How can you become a proactive, defensive driver? Look beyond your bumpers and really see the trafic around you. Watch how cars that are about to change lanes generally start to drift towards the lane they wish to move to before they even turn their signal on (if at all). Pay attention to driving habits (constant braking, rapid acceleration, darting in and out of traffic), and you'll quickly learn that drivers are rather predictable.

And always, above all else, avoid beige Corollas.

In part two of this three-part article we see how a global business leader becomes a part-owner of Penske Racing's NASCAR Team.

Tom DeLoach's NASCAR Years

Prior to DeLoach's retirement, in 2000 as the worldwide coordinator of Mobil's Motorsports program, the company also had a relationship with Penske's IndyCar and NASCAR teams. Penske had only one car in NASCAR's Sprint Cup series at the time.

DeLoach said he had a “vivid memory of Roger Penske. We'd been an associate (sponsor) and we needed to be primary.” He told Penske “we know we like to be with you. If you can't see clear to start up a second team? We wanted to let you know we wanted to let you know first. Roger you talk about a guy who moves, he moves (fast).”

That's when Penske started his second NASCAR team with Michael Kranefuss (formerly Ford's DTM and later worldwide motorsports boss) for driver Jeremy Mayfield.

When DeLoach retired from Mobil as he said “I didn't retire well.” As a high level executive he, personally, had the funds to stay in racing. He asked Penske about being a part owner of that second Penske Racing car. The German-born Kranefuss had previously sold his interest.

Penske told DeLoach “Here's the deal I'll sell you a percentage of the race team. In a year I'll give you the option to double your percentage or sell me back (the part ownership).”

DeLoach stayed until Mayfield left for Ray Evernham's start up team with Dodge and Penske shut down his “second” team. Eventually Penske would have his own second team with Ryan Newman driving.

“I have tremendous respect for Roger Penske,” DeLoach explained “you learn a lot watching him in action.”

But the former executive wasn't through with racing. “You take a little bit from a Ron Dennis (the Formula One team principal) and a little bit from Roger Penske. I'm impressed to have mentors like them. I don't have the size of their wallets and don't race in their league. Whatever you do; be professional about it.”

In 2005 he bought out the interest in small NASCAR truck series team and named it Red Horse Racing after Pegasus the symbol of Mobil.

In third and final part of the article you see how DeLoach is happy in NASCAR's Camping World Truck Series and why he intends to remain there.

Introduction to Certified Pre-Owned Program
Certified Pre-Owned Program Overview - Automobile Magazine
Brief overview and intro to Certified Pre-Owned Programs offered by many manufacturers.

A Brief History

Certified Pre-Owned programs were created back in the 1990s to help dealerships sell used vehicles coming back from leases. Most of the early CPO programs were from premium brands such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW. However, by the end of the '90s most manufacturers offered a CPO program, though some were more developed than others.

IntelliChoice handed out the first CPO Award in 2000 and the winner for the best premium program was a tie between Lexus and Jaguar, while the popular winner was Honda. Over the last twelve years of awards IntelliChoice has crowned three different popular winners (Honda, Volkswagen, and MINI) and five different premium winners (Cadillac, Jaguar, Lexus, Lincoln and Volvo).

Intellichoice recommends 12 SUV / Crossover vehicles that have a better value purchased as a used vehicle versus new.

How can I get the best deal on a vehicle? There are many ways to ensure you get a good deal and various factors to be considered before one can answer. We took one approach by analyzing the various factors and have identified vehicles that are better off purchased as a used car versus new. IntelliChoice's used car ownership costs cover the latest three used model years (the most likely years offered as certified under manufacturer pre-owned vehicle programs); however, they are still based on a five-year projection of what a vehicle will cost to own and operate during that time. A vehicle in the most recent used year is assumed to already have 14,000 miles, and so on. Notably, most used vehicles have already taken the heaviest hit on depreciation costs, so many one- to three-year-old models will see that cost level off, while the areas of maintenance and repairs will rise as the vehicle ages. Bottom line, let someone else take the hit on depreciation costs.

Used or new, buying a vehicle is a big investment. Follow these important Certified Pre‐owned Vehicle Purchasing Tips as you begin your research.

All manufacturers’ certified pre‐owned vehicles must pass a certification inspection. If you are interested in a CPO vehicle, ask the dealer to give you a copy of the inspection list. The list will indicate exactly what has been inspected and should list any repair or maintenance work that was required to bring the vehicle up to certified standards.

Note the mileage and find out the remaining warranty for the vehicle. Depending on the program, you may receive no additional benefits beyond the new-car warranty, or you may receive up to 36 months/50,000 miles of additional certified warranty. Read the certified warranty information carefully to know what additional coverage (beyond any remaining new-car warranty) you will receive with the vehicle and if there is a deductible. Review our program overview to get an idea of what coverage exists based on typical mileage; this will vary based on the exact mileage on the vehicle you’re considering.

For the auto industry, 2012 was significantly better than 2011, which itself was a bounce back from 2010, which in turn saw carmakers pick themselves up off the floor, after having been KO’d in 2009. See a pattern here? The recovery continues, and in fact, is gaining steam.
