F1: Michael Schumacher surprised by top Mercedes form

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
From GMM

Michael Schumacher has admitted he did not expect his former team Mercedes to make such a leap forwards in 2013.

After his F1 comeback with Mercedes between 2010 and 2012, Schumacher returned to retirement this year and was replaced by Lewis Hamilton.

In the great German's wake, Hamilton won from pole last time out in Hungary, while Schumacher's former teammate Nico Rosberg has won twice in 2013 so far.

"Given where we finished last season," seven time world champion Schumacher told Eurosport, "it's a surprise where they are now. I'm happy for them, but I could not have seen that coming."

If that sounded like regret after three years of fallow results, 44-year-old Schumacher insisted he is "honestly" happy to have returned to retirement.

"You can't forget that this sport is not just 20 races," said the former Ferrari driver, whose seven titles and 91 wins are all-time F1 records.

"In those three years, so much energy is consumed that I would not have been able to continue at the level at which I want to measure myself," said Schumacher.

If watching merely on television has been enjoyable for the famous German this year, it is probably because Rosberg's top form has made people reassess Schumacher's Mercedes career.

"People probably understand a little better how good Rosberg is," he said.

Even so, he insists he doesn't regret not being at the wheel of the winning W04.

"It would not have been enough for me to win a few races," said Schumacher. "The goal is to fight for the world championship -- that was my target."

F1: McLaren would like Kevin Magnussen to start with a small team

Adapted from GMM

Marussia has emerged as a potential destination for the McLaren-backed rookie Kevin Magnussen in 2013.

This week, Marussia team boss John Booth admitted the team would like to keep its current drivers in 2014; well-funded Max Chilton, and the Ferrari-linked Jules Bianchi.

But as the Williams-bound Pat Symonds remarked as a parting shot recently, Marussia's "hands are tied" when it comes to needing to make its driver decisions with commercial implications in mind.

Enter Magnussen, the 20-year-old son of former Danish F1 driver Jan.

He is the cream of McLaren's development driver programme, impressing when he drove the British team's 2013 car at the recent Silverstone test.

Boss Martin Whitmarsh said afterwards that Magnussen deserves a place on the 2014 grid.

The youngster is leading this year's Formula Renault 3.5 series, clearly ahead of the likely 2014 Toro Rosso driver Antonio Felix da Costa, and the new Sauber protegé Sergey Sirotkin.

Germany's Auto Motor und Sport said Whitmarsh wants to place Magnussen in F1 "as early as 2014, to give him a year of training without pressure".

"There are not many options," correspondent Michael Schmidt said. "One possibility would be Marussia."

McLaren already works with Marussia on the technical side, leasing its wind tunnel and simulator to the backmarker team.

Jules Bianchi was placed at Marussia this year, but Ferrari driver 'academy' chief Luca Baldisseri hinted a step into the midfield might be appropriate for the impressive French rookie for 2014.

“Jules has completed the move to Formula 1 without any problems. He has become the benchmark driver for the team, gaining its confidence at the track,” said Baldisseri in an interview posted on Ferrari's website.

“I consider it a fundamental move, especially in Formula 1. Recently we spent a bit of time together in Maranello to assess the situation. We will continue to concentrate on stress management, an aspect where he has already made great progress, even if there is still room for improvement. Clearly, currently Jules is not in a situation where he can fight in the mid-field and for the future, it will be important to know if his presence in Formula 1 will have some continuity and in that case, what could be the potential of his team.”

Ford to offer compressed natural gas V6 option with 2014 F-150

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
The 2014 Ford F-150 will offer a gaseous-fuel prep option on the 3.7L V6 engine, which means it will be able to run on compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

With this addition, the Blue Oval will have 8 vehicles available to run on clean-burning, inexpensive CNG/LPG, the others being mostly commercial trucks.

Ford will also become the only manufacturer with an available CNG/LPG-capable half-ton pickup.

The factory-installed, gaseous-fuel prep package will cost $315 in the U.S. and include hardened valves, valve seats, pistons and rings so it can operate on either natural gas or gasoline through separate fuel systems. Upfits will run approximately $7,500 to $9,500 depending on fuel tank capacity.

Fake premium car ring busted in Spain

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Police in Valencia and Madrid have apprehended 8 people involved in a fake premium car ring after receiving a tip from a Ferrari Spain representative who had noticed a fake car being sold online.

The criminals transformed mid-level automobiles into Ferraris and Aston Martins. Fibreglass components were built in-house, and another shop took care of badges and logos to make the falsification complete. In fact, no untrained eye could tell the difference.

The fake cars were then sold through the Internet at €40,000 (approx. $55,000), which is roughly a fifth of what some of the real models are worth.

Overall, police seized 17 fake Ferraris and 2 fake Aston Martins.

Scientists want to publish codes for starting luxury cars

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Three cryptography experts from a Dutch university, who have recently cracked the codes used to start luxury cars from Audi, Bentley, Porsche, and Lamborghini, want to publish the results of their work -- including said codes -- in an upcoming August report. However, Volkswagen (which owns the 4 brands) has been granted an injunction from a U.K. court.

The scientists are looking to explain the method used to penetrate Megamos Crypto -- the algorithm-based system that verifies an owner's key -- thereby allowing anyone with the right tools to wirelessly lockpick these expensive automobiles.

"The public have a right to see weaknesses in security on which they rely exposed," they argued.

Naturally, a judge ruled 3 weeks ago that "car crime will be facilitated" if they publish the algorithm.

We'll definitely keep an eye on that story...

The FIA is staying in control of the accreditation of F1's print journalists.

Before Bernie Ecclestone and Jean Todt shook hands at the Hungaroring last weekend, it was reported control of journalists had been a sticking point as they worked towards a new Concorde Agreement deal.

We reported that, prior to their signing the memorandum of understanding, Ecclestone 'has been holding out on releasing more revenue to the FIA, in exchange for more control over the accreditation of print journalists'.

But Germany's Auto Motor und Sport reports that, despite fears Ecclestone might get the control he wants, the FIA is in fact staying in charge.

Correspondent Michael Schmidt referred to the rumours Ecclestone wanted to put print journalists "on a short leash" after some teams and suppliers "complained about critical articles".

But the new Concorde deal "guarantees free press coverage", Schmidt added.

F1: Integrating the new V6 turbo hybrid engine in the 2014 cars

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
The new V6 turbo hybrid engine to be introduced in Formula 1 starting next year is a totally different beast from the current normally aspirated V8.

Engineers from both sides - the three engine suppliers and the teams - are working together to install the various components of the Power Unit, namely the V6 engine, the batteries, the turbocharger, the KERS and the radiators inside the car.

‘‘One of the key areas we needed to investigate was the packaging of the Power Unit. The current V8 is 95kg, 100kg if you add the weight of the MGU (Motor Generator Unit, which converts mechanical energy to electrical)”, said Axel Plasse, Director of programmes and customer support at Renault Sport F1.

“The weight increases to 120kg when you include the ancillary parts, such as the radiators and other cooling devices. With the 2014 Power Unit, the V6 turbocharged engine will be a minimum of 145kg, plus 35kg for the battery. At 180kg, this is an 80% increase over the current units, plus a further 20kg for the ancillaries such as the intercooler and other radiators”, Plasse added.

‘‘The Power Unit is therefore much more integrated and central to design, for example the turbo overlaps the gearbox so it intrudes into the space where there was a clutch or a suspension part. The energy store is also much larger, which has an impact on chassis length, fuel volume and radiator position, amongst other items,” explained the French engineer.

‘‘Since the first days of the turbo units in the 1970s, Renault's philosophy has always been to facilitate chassis integration, so at a very early stage we had regular video chats, conference calls and site visits to our teams, particularly Red Bull Racing, our development partners, to decide the direction and key milestones so designs on chassis and engine could be synchronized”, Plasse ended.

2013 Bridgestone Racing Academy

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Ever find yourself cruising along the highway and notice you're sitting exactly in the middle of the lane? In other words, your car finds itself a little too far over to the right in the lane. Ever think this is the race car driver in you imagining yourself in an open-wheel, single-seater race car barrelling down the back straight of a track?

I got a taste of the real deal. I got to experience what it feels like to have my ass mere inches off the ground, sitting square in the middle of four poking wheels with an elongated, protruding nose sticking out ahead. The experience is unlike anything else.

Before I go on about my days perfecting apex clipping, late braking, and flat-out acceleration, allow me to say a few words about the reason why I got to do this.

Bridgestone is one of if not the largest supplier of tires in the world. It offers all types of tires from those looking for ultimate performance on the track (RE-11A) to the most unimaginably large tires used by the mining industry. They are also a huge OEM tire supplier, which gives them a fair amount of street cred.

The scope or spectrum of the rubber they produce makes them a foremost expert on the subject and one of their favourite activities is going fast and thankfully, they make great tires for this exact purpose.

Mathieu St-Pierre

The tires
The Bridgestone RE-11A is the selected tire of choice that equips our $70,000+ Van Diemen race cars. The catch phrase for them is: “Faster on the track, dependable on the street.”

Although these tires have an identical tread pattern to the RE-11s, the RE-11As now uses a grippier compound that enables improvements to wet and dry cornering and helps improve dry lap times in the process. These improvements come at no significant cost increase.

This tire is designed for high-performance driving and is actually “geared” towards sport-compact import cars. It is available in V and W speed ratings and in 15”-18" sizes.

The Stealth Blocks, or tread blocks, both increase the tread's stiffness as well as offer up great water evacuation. As it was nearly 40 degrees Celsius and sunny trackside, I did not experience this aspect of the RE-11As. Other features include large outer tread blocks and an asymmetrical construction all in the name of improving traction and working on going quickly.

F1: No test debut for Sergey Sirotkin with Sauber until next year

Sergey Sirotkin has admitted he will not begin his quest for a formula one seat until early next year.

As a 2014 race seat for the 17-year-old is part of Sauber's new deal with Russian partners, it had been suggested Sirotkin might appear on some Friday mornings later this year to gather experience.

But team boss Monisha Kaltenborn said: "That is not going to be an option, because he doesn't have the super license.

"We have to see what kind of possibilities we have," she added.

Work in a simulator is one option, while other reports suggested Sirotkin might work towards obtaining experience, and his mandatory FIA credential, at the wheel of an older F1 car.

But the young Russian told Switzerland's Motorsport Aktuell: "I will have to wait.

"The plan is that I will be sitting in the car in early 2014, for the first official (winter) tests," added Sirotkin.

A big talking point in Hungary last weekend was whether, at the tender age of 18 next year, Sirotkin can possibly be ready for F1.

"I wasn't ready at 18," Lewis Hamilton, who was 22 when he made his debut for McLaren, said. "And I was pretty good at 18."

Andretti Autosport's Ryan Hunter-Reay set the fastest lap time during the IndyCar test day that took place at Mid-Ohio Wednesday.

Unfortunately, the weather did hampered the activities on the track especially in the morning but once conditions improved, Hunter-Reay was able to set a best time of 1m05.6358.

Frenchman Simon Pagenaud (Schmidt) was second while Team Penske's ace Will Power came close behind.

IndyCar newcomers, James Davison (Dale Coyne Racing) and Luca Filippi (Herta) had their chance to get acquainted with their new surroundings; the Australian finishing 21st while the former GP2 driver was 17th.

Teams were able to test a new aluminum steering arm, which has been released by Dallara in an effort to minimise the likelihood of hand and wrist injuries in certain types of accidents.

F1: Organiser rejects doubts over 2014 Russia GP

A key figure of next year's inaugural Russian grand prix has played down suggestions the Sochi race might never take place.

The latest reports suggest a dispute between the Russian automobile federation and race organisers Omega has delayed the official application to the FIA beyond its July deadline.

But Oleg Zabara, Omega's deputy general director, told Russia's Championat: "I cannot understand why there would be doubt.

"In 2010, in the presence of Vladimir Putin, the agreement was signed and work (on the circuit) has gone according to the plan. Maybe all this (uncertainty) is due to the fact that not everything is running smoothly with New Jersey. No, we're fine -- everything is according to plan."

Indeed, while the rest of the 2014 calendar is still the subject of speculation, Sochi already has its provisional race date -- October 19.

And more news could be in the pipeline. Zabara met with Bernie Ecclestone at the Hungaroring last weekend, and also present was Igor Mazepa, of the new Russian GP2 team Russian Time.

Igor Mazepa admitted that Russian Time is working closely with Williams.

"Now we're going to strengthen our relationship," he said. "We are already talking to Claire Williams about the possibility of a Russian driver coming, if there is a vacancy for 2014 due to one of the current drivers going to another team."

Williams' current drivers are Valtteri Bottas and Pastor Maldonado.

F1: Cyril Abiteboul admits Caterham now focussing on 2014 car

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Team Principal of Caterham F1 Team, Frenchman Cyril Abiteboul reflects on the season so far and the brilliant performance of his drivers, Giedo van der Garde and Charles Pic who finished in 14th and 15th places respectively in Hungary.

“It's been an interesting first half of season for the team and for me personally,” said Abiteboul during an interview published by the team.

“As far as we're concerned, we've been fighting with Marussia who have done a great job over the last year. We started the season clearly behind them, but over the last three races a comfortable gap has appeared between us and them, which shows our rate of development. That's also helped us on a couple of occasions to race a Williams or a Sauber and that shows where we're setting our targets,” he added.

Photo: Caterham F1 Team

Abiteboul admits that the factories move of August of last year was distracting, yet necessary.

“Since moving to Leafield last August, and especially since the start of 2013, the focus was on making sure the factory was up and running and putting ourselves in control of our manufacturing process, reducing lead times and increasing economic efficiency, with the right level of integration,” he explained.

The French engineer also confirmed that the team was hiring new people and was heavily involved with the design of its 2014 challenger.

“We must take advantage of the opportunities 2014 will bring and we're already above our initial targets for next year, so much so we're looking at reviewing them for more aggressive ones! The car has been in the tunnel for a while now, and we're seeing good numbers, all of which is being achieved while we keep progressing this year, hopefully showing without a doubt that we are on the right path to reduce the gap to the midfield,” he said.

The Caterham boss is also pleased with the performance of his two drivers.

“As a rookie, Giedo (van der Garde) has had his challenges, but his last race in Hungary was a good reward for his determination and his positive attitude that the team loves. He's also going to be helped by the new tires which will definitely suit his style better than those used for the first nine races,” Abiteboul explained.

“For Charles (Pic), after only one year of experience with Marussia, he immediately made a positive contribution to our development strategy this year and that's a clear sign of his maturity and of his determination. It's possible the new tires take away one of his strengths over the other drivers as he was very good at tire management, but therefore he must adapt and develop other skills in terms of pure race pace to cope with what's to come. He demands a lot from himself and from us, and I like that. I think that sort of spirit will help push the team forwards,” Abiteboul concluded.
