It happened on November 27th: Thomas Davenport invents electric motor

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
An American blacksmith from Vermont, Thomas Davenport, invented the first DC electric motor for industrial use on November 27th, 1834.

He received a patent in February 1837 with his wife Emily and his colleague Orange Smalley. However, due to the high cost of batteries at the time, Davenport's creation did not enjoy the commercial success it deserved.

We probably could say the same thing about today's battery-powered electric cars...

F1: Moves afoot for December tire test with 2013 cars

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
From GMM

Moves are afoot to organise a Pirelli tire test in December, ahead of the start of official 2014 testing in January.

F1's official supplier had been pushing for the Bahrain test - to further develop its 2014 tires and give it time to react ahead of the January tests - with the assistance of just one team, and McLaren had firmly put its hand up.

But some teams objected.

"It would be unfortunate," said Mercedes' Ross Brawn, "if one team had the benefit of running a tire to the exclusion of all the others."

With Friday's rain spoiling Pirelli's efforts to test its 2014 tires at Interlagos, however, the prospect of the December plans being scrapped had raised real concerns that F1 will head into another new season with unsuitable tires.

So, on Sunday at Interlagos, and with the crucial input of Mercedes' Niki Lauda, the team bosses were hurriedly summoned by Bernie Ecclestone and Pirelli's Paul Hembery, Germany's Auto Motor und Sport reveals.

The subject of the meeting was the possible organisation of a full tire test in December with 2013 cars, which will require the approval of FIA president Jean Todt.

"The decision must be made by Wednesday, for logistical reasons," explained correspondent Michael Schmidt.

"The condition is that Pirelli will pay for the test and theoretically every team can send a car. But it requires the consent of all the teams, and the FIA," he added.

2013 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid Review

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
I'm a car-loving child of the ‘90s who once imagined vehicles that would respond to my voice and touch, inform me of relevant things, instantly connect me with any sort of media or information I'd like, and even drive themselves, if needed.

Of course, my pre-teen brain imagined all of this would take place via the sort of dazzling, animated interfaces I dreamt about from my favourite pre-teen TV show, Star Trek. Don't tell my friends, please. Even if my imagined future of high-tech motoring wasn't actually that far off.

What is a Lincoln MKZ Hybrid?
For highly closeted sci-fi-loving gadget-nerds like yours truly, the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid packs feature content, design touches, and high-tech interfaces that get the salivary glands gushing on overtime. Though not equipped with photon torpedoes or warp drive, the MKZ Hybrid is only a few hundred thousand horsepower away from being the driver's very own road-going USS Enterprise.

It has features -- all of them. The self-parking system, navigation, climate-controlled seats, three customizable in-dash screens, colour-selectable mood lighting, household power plug, and adaptive xenon lights don't even put much of a dent in the list of toys. With every camera-and radar-based hazard-detection system going, it's virtually self-aware, too. Plotting a course, hailing your favourite friend or accessing important trip-related data is always just a spoken command away.

2013 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid Price and Specs
Power came from a high-compression 2.0L 4-cylinder engine teamed with an electric drive system powered by a trunk-mounted battery. Combined system output of 188 horsepower is adequate when drivers aren't in a rush -- though if they are, they'll be treated to a less-than-refined growl as the gas engine gets busy to help speed things along. Driven gently, the 2013 Lincoln MKZ is relatively quiet and refined. Driven assertively, not so much. Passing power is adequate, nothing more.

The gist? This car won't make driving enthusiasts warm in the loins, though I did appreciate a measured-by-hand average consumption of 6.1L/100km, including plenty of highway driving. For where and how I drive, that's small-car mileage in a big, comfortable luxury sedan.

Driving the 2013 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid
There's a lot going on in this low-consumption luxury cruiser -- and that's aside from the “more miles per tank” operation of the hybrid drive system and the gorgeously styled interior. On board, the work of Lincoln designers is the most apparent through a finely honed, one-of-a-kind interface between man and machine that adds to the driving experience in a serious way.

It all starts before you get inside. A touch-activated, backlit panel of light-up numbers appears on the driver's door pillar, inviting you to enter an unlock combination.

Open the door and the backlit centre console comes to life with touch-sensitive buttons “appearing” through the dark finish. This slick, flowing console floats over the upper dashboard and has two pass-through storage bins beneath it. It's elegant and simple when the MKZ is turned off, and looks like pure drama when it lights up full of controls.

This console arguably serves as the cabin's visual centerpiece, and isn't interrupted by a gear shifter since the MKZ “shifts” via buttons. Chrome sliders light up as you trace your finger over them to adjust the THX stereo volume or the climate fan speed, adding further to the concept-car environment.

Interfaces aside, the highway ride is comfortable and relaxed without excessive floatiness, and the 2013 Lincoln MKZ should prove long-haul ready for most. I noted no space-related issues other than a slightly cramped footwell, and reduction in trunk space to facilitate the drive battery.

Inside and Out of the 2013 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid
Other positives? I enjoyed above-average headlight performance after dark, as well as the glass panel roof which slides backwards to turn the 2013 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid into a virtual convertible. Doing so doesn't result in offensive levels of wind noise, even well beyond the speed limit.

Further, the MKZ wears its Hybrid identity discreetly. It's a gadget-rich car that happens to have a hybrid powerplant, not a hybrid car with a bunch of gadgets. And the cabin is bang-on where material selection and a one-of-a-kind atmosphere and interface are concerned.

My complaints of the model are mainly related to the driving dynamics. Like many hybrids, steering and brake systems offer little feel or precision, and the modest performance and lazy-sounding engine mean you definitely aren't in a driver's car.

2013 Lincoln MKZ hybrid cabin
The cabin is bang-on where material selection and a one-of-a-kind atmosphere and interface are concerned. (Photo: Justin Pritchard)

Comparing the 2013 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid
Where high-tech, highly unique and very upscale cabin are concerned, the MKZ Hybrid is in a virtual class of its own. I've driven few other cars that so proudly flaunt distinctive design, both inside and out, towards a unique, modern, and engaging character. It won't impress drivers after all-out comfort as much as, perhaps, a Lexus ES 300h, though shoppers after laid-back luxury delivered with tremendous feature content and a plethora of unique touches, as well as thrifty mileage, should check it out.

The importance of nice shoes

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
A few weeks ago, I wrote about one of the most important wheels in a vehicle: the steering wheel. However, this time I'd like to point out the other four, and why they have such a huge impact on a vehicle's appeal.

Here's the deal: A good pair of shoes can make or break an outfit. I'm going to be a bit girlie here, but bear with me. I have a bit of a shoe fetish (I'm working through a program and the first step is admitting you have a problem, right?). The higher the heel, the more I want to sport it. I know the right pair of kicks can complete an outfit or completely ruin the look. When it comes to rims on a car, the same can be said to the nth degree.

Never was this made clearer than while I perused my colleagues' thousands of photos from this year's 2013 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Aftermarket wheels are all about that: completing the outfit. Some do it to utter perfection. Others, not so much.

Companies like Rotiform can be likened to Jimmy Choo, BBS to Manolo Blahnik -- these are staples, these are the bigwigs, these are the wheels all others bow down to a try desperately to emulate. They are the kingpins and rarely (if ever) release an ugly or bad wheel.

I bring all this up because as I sit here and stare at this week's tester, a 2013 Toyota Corolla S, I can't help but admire the wheel design. Companies are paying more attention to things they have, in the past, ignored or thought less important. Just as trends in the fashion industry change (pointy toes out, rounded pumps in), so too do trends in the auto industry. And I absolutely adore the wheel trend seen on everything from supercars to econoboxes.

Matte, two-tone, Euro-inspired; it's all surfacing on the everyday vehicle. I think it's safe to say that Kia have some of the most attractive wheels on their everyday, affordable cars. Honda would be another, and with the launch of their latest Civic model came a host of new wheel designs to choose from.

A vehicle is an emotional thing -- at least in my opinion it should be. Purchasing one is as personal as choosing your outfit for the day (except, you have to keep in mind that you'll be wearing the same thing every single day for the quite some time). So, it's only natural that manufacturers would offer something as personalized as a nice set of wheels to go on your vehicle.

So, what's my point here? Well, I truly think a good pair of shoes (read: wheels) can make or break a vehicle's initial appeal. Kiera Knightly in a little black cocktail dress and white tennis shoes just isn't the same as Kiera Knightly in a little black cocktail dress and 6” stilettos. Call it what you will, but that's curb appeal, and I'm always thrilled to see manufacturers who understand that.

Former NASCAR racer Tyler Walker enters plea by mail

From Stgeorgeutah.com

The lawyer for former NASCAR racer Tyler Walker said his client will be entering a plea-by-mail in relation to a high speed chase that ended on the interstate near St. George in January this year.

Walker, 34, and Raelle McDonald, 31, both of Hermosa Beach, Calif., were involved in a high-speed pursuit on Jan. 11 that crossed from Nevada through Arizona and into Utah.

They were ultimately stopped by on Interstate 15 at mile post 6 by the Utah and Arizona highway patrols.

One Nevada trooper said he clocked the car, a BMW, traveling at 140 mph.

According to a UHP statement, a subsequent search of the BMW produced alleged methamphetamine, marijuana, drug paraphernalia and alcohol.

Walker and McDonald face a series of class-B and class C-misdemeanors related to drug possession and alcohol. They also face two drug-related third-degree felonies each. In addition to these charges, Walker also faces a class-B misdemeanor for driving under the influence, and a third-degree felony for fleeing from police.

Douglas Terry, the attorney for Walker and McDonald, told Judge Eric Ludlow that Walker would be entering a plea-by-mail. Ludlow scheduled a hearing for the plea on Jan. 7, 2014.

Walker was suspended indefinitely by NASCAR on May 18, 2007 for violation of the substance abuse policy, and has not competed in NASCAR since.

F1 peers split over Sebastian Vettel versus Fernando Alonso question

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
From GMM

As only a forced winter pause finally stops Sebastian Vettel's winning streak for now, the F1 grid is divided over whether the German is really the best.

He has won four world championships on the trot, and recently equalled famous records once set by statistical legends Michael Schumacher and Alberto Ascari.

Still, not all of his peers think the Red Bull driver is better than the 2013 runner-up, Ferrari's Fernando Alonso.

"They are both great drivers," Vettel's retiring teammate Mark Webber said, "but I can only say that I was really happy to be fighting against Fernando in my last race."

Australian Webber, however, is famously friendly with the Spaniard.

Alonso's Ferrari teammate for the past four years, Felipe Massa, is undecided.

"For me, they are both great," the Brazilian told Spain's AS sports newspaper, who in Brazil last weekend surveyed every driver on the grid for their opinion about Vettel versus Alonso.

"Vettel is the champion," Massa added, "Fernando is considered the best. You want me to say one? I won't do that."

Others are less diplomatic. "I think that in that Red Bull, Alonso would win even more easily than Vettel does," said Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton.

Nico Rosberg added: "I don't know if Alonso is the best, but he's one of the best, no doubt. Better than Seb? Maybe."

Alonso's fellow Spanish speaker, Mexican Sergio Perez, answered: "Although this year has been all about Vettel, it is clear to me that Alonso is the best."

Another Mexican, Esteban Gutierrez, added: "Alonso, yes, Alonso. He is still the best."

McLaren driver Jenson Button is not so convinced: "I couldn't say," said the Briton.

"If I was a team boss ... when I am a team boss I will show you who I would sign," Button laughed.

Pastor Maldonado added: "I think Vettel is very good, for sure, but if I was a team I would have Alonso, of course, without a doubt.

"Fernando is a genius," the Venezuelan said.

But Valtteri Bottas answered: "Um ... that's a difficult question. I think I would have them both!"

Caterham's Giedo van der Garde and Marussia's Max Chilton also answered: "Both."

Heikki Kovalainen did not hesitate before naming his favourite: "Alonso."

Romain Grosjean admitted: "That is a very difficult question and I couldn't honestly answer it."

Nico Hulkenberg agreed: "Impossible to say, impossible to know."

Adrian Sutil added: "All I can say is that they are both very good, but I wouldn't like to say one or the other (is best)."

But Paul di Resta admitted he is leaning in Alonso's direction. "It's hard to say, Vettel is the champion but Fernando ... what can you say about Alonso that hasn't already been said?"

Some drivers gave political answers.

"I have Spanish and German friends, so I don't want to hurt anyone," laughed Caterham's Charles Pic.

"I think I will surprise you," said Red Bull-owned Toro Rosso's continuing driver Jean-Eric Vergne, "but I will say Vettel."

"I admire Fernando," said Daniel Ricciardo, who will be Vettel's teammate in 2014, "but I'll take Seb!"

Jules Bianchi smiled: "I stick with Alonso, but I can't say anything else, as I work with Ferrari."

Ferrari has hit back at reports in a famous British magazine that its budget is the highest in formula one.

Autosport said Ferrari's annual budget is EUR 250 million; 15 more than world champions Red Bull, and a whopping 90 million higher than any other team.

The fabled Italian team's anonymous website columnist The Horse Whisperer, however, hit back by insisting the figures are "fantasy", which have drawn "even distinguished newspapers into conclusions that are wildly erroneous".

"It would be easy to deny the figures with facts," Ferrari added, "but the truth about business matters has to stay confidential."

F1: Ferrari seems to abandon pullrod layout for 2014

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
From GMM

Ferrari has "almost certainly" abandoned its novel approach to front suspension layout ahead of the 2014 season.

That is the claim of the authoritative Italian publication Autosprint, after Ferrari came close to winning last year's title with the 'pullrod' system not seen on the F1 grid for more than a decade.

Ferrari, however, fell well short of having the fastest car in 2013, despite Fernando Alonso managing to finish runner-up behind Red Bull's dominant Sebastian Vettel.

Autosprint reports: "The 2014 Ferrari will almost certainly abandon the pullrod front suspension to return to classic pushrod, as per all the other teams apart from McLaren."

Indeed, McLaren - despite having arguably the fastest car at the end of 2012 - followed Ferrari's lead into pullrod technology for 2013, and promptly had its worst season in decades.

Photo: WRi2

Ferrari's change of direction may have been influenced by newcomer James Allison, who was responsible for the highly competitive Lotus cars of recent seasons.

"In F1, you don't fix everything overnight," the Briton is quoted as saying. "The team has analysed its weak points, one by one, and we are continuing to do that.

"It is no secret that we have been lacking in the aerodynamic area in recent seasons," added Allison.

Bernie Ecclestone hopes the famous team, arguably the most important name in formula one, can get back to winning ways in 2014.

"People think the Ferrari name is enough to win," the F1 chief executive told Marca, "but I think Mr (Luca di) Montezemolo has put much more into the team for next year and we will see a very different Ferrari."

Asked by the Spanish sports newspaper what he thinks Ferrari did wrong in 2013, Bernie Ecclestone answered: "I don't know if the problem was Ferrari or Fernando (Alonso).

"I hope he has not lost the enthusiasm that he had -- the problem is that if you think the team can't give you the car you want, it's a problem, isn't it?"

AER was selected following a thorough review of proposals submitted by five prospective engine suppliers.

AER is owned by Rob and Chris Dyson and company Managing Director Mike Lancaster.

The partnership between Andersen Promotions and AER, which extends through 2019, will see a slightly modified, long-mileage version of the multiple sportscar championship-winning AER-P07 2.0 liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine installed in the new Dallara IL-15 chassis prior to testing next August.

The new car and engine combination will make its competition debut at the start of the 2015 Indy Lights season.

With an expected 6,000 miles (9,600km) between rebuilds, the AER-P07 Indy Lights engine is designed to run a full season without major maintenance. AER will provide trackside support as well as the necessary engine service and between-season rebuilds. The engines will be available for lease through Andersen Promotions.

In its Indy Lights version the AER-P07 will produce approximately 450 horsepower, with additional power available via a driver-controlled "push-to-pass" feature.
