I've just returned from an intensive, weeklong parade of evaluating countless new cars and voting on the ones that I believe are the best in each of the Automotive Journalists of Canada's (AJAC) categories.
To note, AJAC's Test Fest is one of the most comprehensive, best organized, and complete of such events in North America -- and likely the world. Each journalist must drive every car in a given category on the same roads and on the same day in order for the scores to count. We are scanned in and must spend an equal amount of time at the helm of each vehicle. Scores are both subjective and objective, are tabulated and averaged out. The entire process is actually quite scientific.
As you can see, lots of work goes into selecting the cars that we auto journalists believe deserve your attention.
MotorTrend, Wards, Consumer Reports, Automobile and many more (including us here at Auto123.com) feel it is our duty to direct you, the car buyer, in the best possible direction when it comes to spending your hard-earned money.
We feel it is our responsibility since we get to evaluate numerous cars over a single year. In fact, I've likely driven nearly 100 cars in the last 12 months. In the past, I've had years where I drove no less than 130 cars. If I was to multiply this by nearly 15 years on the job... Well, you get the idea.
All of this experience, Auto123.com's many contributors, along with countless archives all come together when the time comes to select our best of the best.
The question is: Do you care?
The only parallel I can draw for myself is when I purchase something I know little or nothing about. Before I purchased my television, I did some research and stumbled upon a few Top 10 lists where the set I liked scored well. This definitely had an influence on me plopping my cash on a specific set. I undertook a similar exercise when I purchased my sofas. There is a huge difference, in my opinion, between buying a couch and a car. I wasn't giddy at the thought of a new place to park my ass when watching TV. I was kind of excited about the TV itself, but none of it ever compared to when the wife and I sprung for our Volkswagen Tiguan. Emotion and passion certainly are key players here.
So, when you shop or shopped for your latest vehicle, were you influenced by or did you even consider award-winner vehicles?
