McLaren and Sahara Force India Formula 1 teams have decided not to attend Pirelli's Bahrain tire test, scheduled December 17-19.

McLaren told Sky Sports F1 that the tight timeframes involved in getting ready for next week's hastily-arranged session forced them to change its plans.

"We are not testing in Bahrain next week," a McLaren spokesman said.

A spokesman for Force India, meanwhile, made clear that the late timing of the test's scheduling meant they didn't have sufficient notice to freight cars and equipment to Bahrain.

Meanwhile, Scuderia Ferrari has confirmed their participation and will run the team's third driver, Pedro de la Rosa and Ferrari Driver Academy member, Jules Bianchi to drive the F138.

As the world awaits the debut of the new BMW M3 and M4, which will take place on January 13th at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the German automaker gave us this official teaser.

The BMW M3 and M4 share many attributes, including a 3.0L inline 6-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces around 430 horsepower. The former is based on the 3 Series sedan, while the latter derives from the 4 Series coupe.

You may remember that an M4 concept was unveiled earlier this year at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in California.

College Road Trip: 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
For those of us without a checkbook like Nigel Wright, watching your money is important -- and Mitsubishi's latest offering helps Canadian drivers do just that. It's called the Mirage, it's huge on low-cost transport, and it's not a mirage that its starting price is under $12,500, it has a 10-year, 160,000 kilometre powertrain warranty or that its mileage figures suggest you can go 100 clicks on as little as 4.4 litres.

The Mits Mirage is basic transportation, and evaluating it as anything else is missing the point. Besides, the shopper after a car like this one wants, arguably, three key things: a cheap price, low running costs, and that warm, snuggly feeling that arises from knowing you've scored a good deal.

As such, the Mirage will sell some copies to families and folks after a thrifty second-car runabout to use when the Sequioa or Tahoe's services aren't required or to any number of folk looking to downsize their ride, fuel bills, repair costs and car payments or to someone like my brother who drives a big, gas-sucking truck to support his outdoorsy weekend activities while cringing at the fuel burned on his work commute during the week.

There's another shopper the Mirage is going to be even more popular with. This shopper's favourite restaurant has a 99-cent menu; they're familiar with living on a shoestring budget; they're probably upgrading from a pair of Nikes and a bus-pass, because the Mirage will probably be their first car. If not, they've probably returned beverage containers and searched beneath sofa cushions for gas money in the not-so-distant past.

Yes, the Mitsubishi Mirage is going to be a hit with students. Students who will likely take their new Mirage on road trips, loaded to the brim with friends, gear, and supplies while searching out all sorts of new adventures.

I thought I'd head out on a college road trip of my own, even though I went to university nearly a decade ago and haven't set foot in the halls of higher learning edifice since then. I selected three friends to join me, and we packed up, set off, and headed from Sudbury to the most exciting of Canadian destinations: Sault St. Marie, Ontario.

The agenda? An evening in the hot-tub at the Water Tower Inn (which was, of course, broken), a night on the town, and a morning of breakfast and meeting a very special college car from another era.

My passenger-buddies were initially reluctant about taking the little Mirage on such a big road trip; however, they, and I, learned a lot about Canada's thriftiest and best-backed subcompact in the process. Here are some notes.

Bigger than it Looks: It was anyone's guess how the Mirage's interior would accommodate Paul, Dave, Eddie and I, plus our overnight bags, and a large 20-pound pike mounted to a board (a gift for a friend's new garage) all at once. The 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage is bigger inside than it looks -- and though snug for four adults of average-ish size, it wasn't oppressively tight. Three cupholders and a rear-window cargo-cover shelf added to the at-hand storage and helped keep us organized on the go. Seats are flat and somewhat stiff, so a few stops to stretch were required. All of my passengers were surprised at the interior space, and especially headroom.

Great Lighting:
Some after-dark driving revealed a very good headlight system, especially with the high beams engaged. The route is a drab, poorly lit stretch of boring asphalt on a good day., I appreciated powerful, saturating high-beam output during this mid-November road trip in limited daylight. The Mirage's high beams are bang-on in terms of output and dispersion.

Get the CVT for Highway Cruising: The CVT isn't a favourite transmission, though the tester benefitted from its presence. With no gears to shift, the CVT puts the 1.2L 3-cylinder engine's 74 horsepower to optimal use, enabling shift-free acceleration up to highway speeds, enhanced refinement, and the ability to spend more time at lower revs. Best thing? Hills. With an automatic, a little car like this would excessively hunt to find the right gear on any grade, like Goldilocks evaluating bowls of porridge. With the CVT, revs smoothly ramp up as needed, speed is maintained well, and refinement is maximized.

Decent Highway Ride and Steering: Rough roads in town can coax some harshness and noise from the Mirage's suspension, though on well-maintained highways it feels relatively solid and robust -- not flimsy and delicate. Further, a heavy “notch” in the on-centre steering position means the Mirage “locks” onto its line when drivers point it straight ahead, helping it feel like a bigger, heavier, and more planted machine at speed.

Decent Mileage in less-than-ideal Conditions: I didn't achieve the sub 4L/100km rating promised by Mitsubishi of their latest gas-saver, though with 800 pounds of passengers, plus their stuff, rolling at 115 km/h on winter tires on a windy day, my trip average mileage landed at 6.5L/100km, which isn't bad at all.

Complaints: A few gripes came to light during the trip, too. First, there's no arm-rest, which sucks is you have arms. Second, the engine sounds unpleasant and protests if you need to give it the boot and open it right up. Finally, a whistling noise, which we figured was probably the sound of wind going around a body panel gap, was apparent for some of the drive.

F1: Top 5 key moments of 2013 Formula season

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Let's review the top 5 key moments, or most memorable events of the 2013 Formula 1 season which saw German Sebastian Vettel capture his fourth world title for Red Bull Racing.

5
Singapore Grand Prix - Sebastian Vettel proves he's (by far) the best
Red Bull Racing's Sebastian Vettel massacred the opposition as he scored a crushing victory on the streets of Singapore. Vettel started from pole and led all 61 laps in a Renault-powered RB9 that was sometimes two seconds a lap faster than any other car.

4
Brazilian Grand Prix - Jenson Button scores the best finish of the year for McLaren
By finishing fourth at Interlagos, Jenson Button scored the best finish of the season for the mighty McLaren team. That concluded the worst even season for the British team, failing to score a single podium for the first time since 1980, the year Ron Dennis took over control of the team.

3
British Grand Prix - A race marked by the blowout of five tires
Nico Rosberg scored victory for Mercedes AMG but the Silverstone race will be remembered for the dramatic fact that five drivers had their Pirelli tires blowout and several more narrowly avoiding having the same disaster.

In an effort to reduce their excessive tire wear, some teams were found to have been running the uni-directional tires the wrong way round and at camber angles up to four degrees.

2
Mercedes illegal tire test
Certainly the most bizarre affair of the season. The F1 paddock discovered in Monaco that Mercedes AMG held a secret Pirelli tire test in Barcelona the week following the recent Grand Prix, which is forbidden under the current regulations. Mercedes booked the test without other teams' knowledge and used blank driver helmets. The FIA reprimanded the team and Pirelli for carrying out the test, and Mercedes was also banned from the upcoming Young Driver Test at Silverstone.

Malaysian Grand Prix - Multi-21
Undoubtedly the most controversial affair of the year. Sebastian Vettel deliberately ignored the Red Bull team orders (Multi-21), attacked and passed race leader, his teammate Mark Webber. Meanwhile, Mercedes told its drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, to slow down and not to attack each other and not fight for third place. After obeying the team orders, Rosberg told to the team “Remember this one...”

2013 Subaru WRX STI Review

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Assimilation is often inevitable. Move to a new community, city, country and you're going to start to act like the locals to integrate yourself into their way of life -- to fit in. Despite our best efforts to keep our heritage, to keep our past, sometimes it's just not possible.

Enter the 2013 Subaru WRX STI.

Vehicles often carry with them a history, a reason that brought them into existence. Usually, a storied past includes racing of some sort, be it Le Mans, F1 or the World Rally Championship (WRC). The technology and components that helped the predecessors of these current road cars succeed on their rightful tracks trickle down in some way to the cars we park in our driveways.

Assimilation might be inevitable, but I'd hoped Subaru would have tried a little harder to keep its STI closer to its roots instead of selling out to make the car “fit in.”

What is a Subaru WRX STI?
Essentially, the STI (Subaru Tecnica International) is the top variant of Subaru's Impreza. Built on the already more powerful WRX, the STI added sportier “rally driven” suspension, steering and engine components. Upping power and performance as well as adding to the aggressive look of the WRX with larger wheel arches, a bigger rear spoiler and larger hood scoop.

While the STI version of the WRX has been available in Japan since the mid-‘90s, we didn't see this beefed up version in North American till 2004.

2013 Subaru WRX STI Price and Specs
The 2013 Subaru WRX STI houses essentially the same engine as the WRX, a turbocharged 2.5L 4-cylinder with high-capacity intercooler. This set-up pushes the STI's output to 305 horsepower (as opposed to the WRX's 265) and 290 lb-ft of torque.

With a base price of $38,195 (for the sedan and including big Brembo brakes ands Subaru's SI-DRIVE engine management system), the 2013 Subaru WRX STI is pushing that $40k mark, and I'm not sure it's worth the difference over the base WRX.

Driving the 2013 Subaru WRX STI
I wanted to be impressed with the Subaru WRX STI. And here's why: it's heritage. Where it comes from should be so much more present in where it is today, and it's just not. It is so far removed from the raw, balls-out rally history its been built on, that it's almost sad.

Maybe I'm being a bit harsh, so I'll try again. My husband drives his '04 Subaru Impreza WRX every day. It has a 227 horsepower 2.0L engine and a 5-speed transmission. I drove it the week I had the 2013 STI hoping to feel a difference. Besides more pull in the ‘13's top gears, I felt none. In fact, I feel like our old WRX has more character and heritage than the new model ever will.

The 2013 Subaru WRX STI has been moulded into a city-capable “ricer.” It's no longer the arrogant I-can-handle-anything AWD sedan it used to be. Sure, it has a big wing but that's about it.

I will admit I enjoyed the exhaust note of the 2013 Subaru WRX STI. At least it sounded the part, but even that got a bit drone-y after a week behind the wheel. I just wasn't thrilled to be behind the wheel, I didn't look forward to my next time behind the wheel, I felt no thrill.

Of course, the 6-speed manual transmission was a pleasure and I loved the feedback from the clutch; finally one that didn't feel invisible under my left foot. The STI felt heavy in corners and not as lithe as I wanted, but it held its ground when asked.

Driving the 2013 Subaru WRX STI isn't unpleasant -- just disappointing.

Inside and Out of the 2013 Subaru WRX STI

Subaru's front fascias have been a point of contention across the auto industry for years. You'd be hard-pressed to find a manufacturer that's changed their front nose as often as Subaru. Everyone has their favourite: bug-eye, hawk-eye, etc. I've not been adverse to their changes, but I think they took the “normal” look a bit too far this time.

While the STI version of the WRX is more aggressive, it's still docile in my opinion, and garish in the wrong ways (read: that wing!). The hood scoop is too integrated and the front lip isn't angry enough. This is their rally child, their gravel eater, and it looks just as at home in a condo underground lot. No good.

Inside the 2013 Subaru WRX STI is a bit of a disaster. It's clear you do not spend the near-$40k on this vehicle for the interior design. While the rally style STI-stitched seats are comfortable, the end.. The instrument cluster is a melange of different coloured bits and pieces, and the Bluetooth mic is actually a miniature external microphone that dangles from the ceiling above the driver. Seriously.

Comparing the 2013 Subaru WRX STI
When it comes to comparing the 2013 Subaru WRX STI the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution immediately comes to mind. With the same rally-bred heritage, I have to say the Evo actually offered a more exciting ride than the STI.

Here's hoping the new WRX STI from Subaru will forgo all assimilation and they'll let it truly embrace its culture and be the performance car we know it can be.

General Motors’ independence, its shedding of the “Government Motors” epithet, seemed like a long way off when I was attending the frequent press conferences in Detroit’s Renaissance Center in 2009. Just shy of mid-decade, the U.S. Treasury has sold off its remaining GM stock, at a loss of more than $10 billion compared with the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) bailout. Altogether, reports the New York Times, the Treasury has recouped $433 billion on its initial TARP “investment” of $422 billion.

2014 Acura RLX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD Review - Automoblie Magazine
Battery-powered torque vectoring.

SAN FRANCISCO, California -- Acura answers the age-old question of "Why?" with the age-old answer, "Because it can" with the launch of its new, all-wheel-drive hybrid version of the RLX flagship sedan. The name of the car says it all, in that the hybrid system is there to provide all-wheel drive and, thus, the sport. If you check "hybrid" on the order sheet, the RLX is no longer a front-wheel-drive car. That doesn't make it a sport sedan, a term Acura assiduously avoids in describing the car, although it makes liberal use of the words "sporty" and "dynamic" as adjectives. In this context, Sport Hybrid means that two of the RLX's three electric motors straighten out its handling, virtually eliminating the benign understeer you'll find in the base front-wheel-drive car. This is not an über-high-fuel-mileage competitor for the Mercedes-Benz E250 BlueTec or BMW 535d xDrive turbo-diesels, although the RLX Sport Hybrid will cost about as much as the latter.
