Dr Helmut Marko, Red Bull's often hard-talking F1 consultant, has a surprising view regarding the sport's likely newest rookie.

If 17-year-old Sergey Sirotkin makes his grand prix debut for Sauber next year as scheduled, he will be by far the youngest driver in the history of the sport ever to do so.

The Russian is therefore already being written off as simply the latest crude example of pay-drivers buying their way into the pinnacle of motor sport.

But Sauber team boss Monisha Kaltenborn insists at Spa-Francorchamps: "You can't cut him down just because of his age and his father."

He may be central to Sauber's Russian rescue deal, but Kaltenborn insists Sirotkin deserves a chance.

"There are drivers who pay for their cockpit, that's true," she admitted.

"But many who came with backing have very quickly got rid of the 'pay driver' accusation. Look at Raikkonen," said Kaltenborn, referring to Sauber's controversial driver choice way back in 2001.

One man who knows a lot about Sirotkin's current arena, Formula Renault 3.5, is Marko, who has placed a lot of up-and-coming Red Bull-backed youngsters in the 'world series'.

"Sirotkin is still young," Marko told Der Spiegel, "but he is already very good.

"I am of the view that it is not a mistake to promote him."

F1: Webber reveals Ricciardo is Red Bull successor

A mischievous Mark Webber on Sunday gave away the name of his successor at Red Bull.

While the frenzied 'silly season' rumour-mongers wonder if Kimi Raikkonen, Jenson Button or even Fernando Alonso might still be in the running, Australian Webber said it is his younger compatriot who has secured the plum 2014 seat.

Team boss Christian Horner has insisted all weekend that a decision has not been made, and that an announcement is not due at least until Monza in two weeks.

But the Le Mans-bound Webber said at Spa-Francorchamps: "The decision's made.  We all know who it is.  I'm happy with that decision.

"It's good for him and good for Australia," he told Channel 10.

Greenpeace environmentalists protest against Shell at Belgian GP

Environmental activists Greenpeace on Sunday staged an audacious protest against race sponsors Shell at the Belgian grand prix.

Shell is the Spa-Francorchamps race's high-profile title sponsor, as well as backing the famous Italian team Ferrari.

First, paragliders took to the skies with banners protesting the oil multinational's Arctic oil drilling plans.

Abseiling activists then mounted the roof of the main grandstand and unfurled a huge banner that read 'ARCTIC OIL?  SHELL NO!'

After the race, as Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton took their trophies, another abseiling protester tried to get onto the podium, amid the boos of the crowd and the resistance of the Shell-branded grid girls.

Although unsuccessful in their final bid, the activists did manage to place another Shell-branded banner prominently in front of the podium, reading 'Save the Arctic'.

F1: Bernie Ecclestone confirms Michelin wants to supply tires again

From GMM

Bernie Ecclestone has confirmed reports from Spa-Francorchamps this week that Michelin wants to return to formula one.

"They do want to get back in," the F1 chief executive is quoted by Auto Motor und Sport, "but we have had contracts with Pirelli for some time."

Ecclestone is referring to commercial arrangements that have already been made with the sport's existing supplier.

But there is no such contract between Pirelli and F1's governing FIA beyond 2013.

That has ramped up the pressure on the already-frustrated Italian company, who said moves to change F1's supplier now would be "farcical".

"If Michelin wanted to return why didn't they come out and say so last September?" motor sport boss Paul Hembery told the Telegraph.

He was speaking at Spa-Francorchamps, where after Friday's punctures for Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso, he had to show photographs to journalists to prove the problems had been simply caused by debris.

"We can't even get a flat tire now?" Hembery is quoted by Autosprint.

Chevrolet: 44,789 2011 and 2012 Cruze recalled

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Chevrolet has recalled 44,789 2011 and 2012 Cruze compact sedans to prevent possible brake failure.

The power-brake boosters in vehicles equipped with the DOHC 1.4 litre turbocharged engine and 6T40 automatic transmission may potentially malfunction because of an electric vacuum pump problem, causing brake failure. Drivers may need to apply extra effort in order to immobilize the vehicle if this problem occurs, thus increasing the risk of collision and injury.

Dealers will have to inspect and replace a micro switch in the power brake vacuum pipe assembly.

F1 Belgium: Sebastian Vettel cruises to easy Spa win (+results)

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel put a damper on Lewis Hamilton's title chances as the German powered to a dominant display of his pace during a dry Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps.

Many thought Hamilton could replicate his performance from Hungary, where he won from pole, but Vettel decided otherwise as he breezed passed the Brit before the end of the first lap.

Fernando Alonso (Ferrari), who qualified a distant ninth on Saturday, stormed through to fifth during the first lap and eventually on to finish second ahead of Hamilton. Nico Rosberg (Mercedes) and Mark Webber (Red Bull) completed the top five.

Jenson Button (McLaren) rallied to six, almost pulling off a one-stop strategy. His performance made for one of McLaren's best race of the season. His teammate Sergio Perez dropped to 11th after a penalty following a tangle with Romain Grosjean (Lotus).

Grosjean finished eighth behind Felipe Massa (Ferrari). Adrian Sutil saved Force India's day with a ninth place finish. The German's performance will still make Paul di Resta's race-ending crash with Pastor Maldonado (Williams) difficult to forget.

Daniel Ricciardo (Toro Rosso) fought back from the far ends of the grid to 10th.

Kimi Raikkonen's (Lotus) run of 27 point finishes came to an end as brake issues forced him to retire from an average race.

NASCAR: Matt Kenseth holds off Kahne for Bristol victory

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Matt Kenseth's hopes for a second Sprint Cup title got a boost as he held off a furious charge of Kasey Kahne for the win Saturday night at Bristol Motor Speedway.

By many people's reckoning Kahne had every right to wreck the 2003 champion to take the win away only the duo raced cleanly, if intensely, over the final 12 laps.

Four times this year Kahne had been taken out by one or another Joe Gibbs Racing teammate where Kenseth works.

"Kasey's as good as they get and he's a clean driver," said Kenseth. "He raced as hard as he could -- we ran out of room off (turn) four there.  We were both digging as hard as we could to try to get it.  I got real tight on them old rights (tires) and had just enough to hold on."

It was the third time this season that Kahne finished behind Kenseth. At the tight .533 mile oval payback is typical, but, not for Kahne.

"I don't know," said Kahne. "I just ... I think at the end of the day, I just don't wreck people."

"I had the better car," Kahne added. "The guys did an awesome job in the pits and I feel bad we didn't win. We needed this; this would have been big for us.

"If I tried to get there, but I probably would have wrecked both of us (and) there would have just been a wreck. I just tried to pass him as clean as I could and race him as hard as I could. We were rubbing all the way down Turn 4 and I just didn't clear him.

"I just didn't get it done and I'm upset with myself for not figuring out how to win tonight."

With a season-leading fifth victory Kenseth takes the virtual points lead going into NASCAR's playoff's called the Chase due to points for wins. Five-time champ, Jimmie Johnson, whose car was wrecked, has four wins.

Juan Pablo Montoya, who was told two weeks ago he wouldn't be returning with Earnhardt Ganassi Racing, was third, Brian Vickers finished fourth, followed by Joey Logano, Paul Menard, and Jeff Gordon.

There were a number of accidents, but, the most significant one occurred on lap 451 when Vickers got into the pole winner, Denny Hamlin, collecting eight cars including 2012 Champion Brad Keselowski, Kevin Harvick, Ryan Newman, Casey Mears and David Stremme.

The race to the Chase battle shuffled again with two races remaining until the points reset.

Logano, who won last week at Michigan, was the biggest winner, climbing to 10th in the standings while Brad Keselowski, Kurt Busch, Martin Truex Jr. and Ryan Newman each had problems and dropped in points. Keselowski and Busch fell out of the top 10.

With Kahne back in the top 10 in points, Truex and Newman still hold, for now, the two wild-card spots because neither Keselowski, Busch or Jeff Gordon—who are 11th-13th in points—have a win this season. Truex and Newman, 14th and 15th, respectively, have one win each.
