F1: Valtteri Bottas hopes to get Williams contract extension

From GMM

Williams F1 Team disappointed ranks of Finnish journalists this week by failing to announce the extension of rookie Valtteri Bottas' contract.

The reporters were summoned to Helsinki for a press conference, to be attended by the 23-year-old as well as his F1 team boss, Sir Frank Williams.

Surely, the journalists thought, it will be announced that Bottas' contract will be extended to include 2014, particularly after deputy boss Claire Williams said the Oxfordshire based team is "convinced we have a future world champion on our hands".

However, no announcement was made.

Asked about Claire Williams' comments, Bottas told the broadcaster MTV3: "Sure, that sounds good! It (staying at Williams) would be great, so let's hope so."

He said he is not worried about the forthcoming contract negotiations.

"There's no point thinking about it too much," said Bottas. "The best thing I can do is focus on the racing and do my best."

Williams has struggled for pace in the early phase of Bottas' career, but the young Finn has shown well alongside teammate Pastor Maldonado, and last Saturday he qualified third in the wet conditions in Montreal.

"I think Canada was good for me in that I was able to show my skills," he said. "It is not so easy to see what you are doing when you are fifteenth.

"Hopefully I have shown that I really deserve my place."

Sir Frank Williams admitted he is happy with Bottas.

"Valtteri is a wonderful young man," said the 71-year-old in Helsinki, according to Turun Sanomat newspaper.

"He is very popular and cooperative within the team, and he absorbs himself in everything he sees and hears.

"He doesn't talk much, but that's because he listens," Williams beamed.

Rally: Who can beat Sebastien Loeb at the Pikes Peak?

Having set the fastest times in the practice runs, nine-time World Rally Champion, Sebastien Loeb is now the clear favorite to win the Pikes Peak hill climb and to smash the climb record.

Loeb, who is new to hill climbing, drives a monstrous, especially prepared Peugeot 208 T16 - a 875kg race beast powered by a 875-horsepower turbo engine.

“I feel very confident with the car,” confirmed Loeb. “That's a reassuring start, if only because of the speeds we get up to here. We are already getting close to the limit in many places. All we need to do now is make some detail changes and we will be ready for the Big Day!”

The main rival of the Frenchman include Nobuhiro “Monster” Tajima who drives a 910-bhp Suzuki SX4 and Rhys Millen, driving a prototype based on a Hyundai Genesis.

IndyCar driver Simon Pagenaud will be behind the wheel of a 530-bhp Honda Odyssey minivan.

All practice climbs are performed in two different sections - lower and upper. There will be more practice runs held June 15 and 16.

The real thing will be held June 30 with just one complete climb to the clouds at 14,110 feet (4300m)!

The DTM's traditional roll-out session will be reinstated at this weekend's Lausitzring race after having been banned since the beginning of the season.

With the objective to reduce costs, the DTM's organisers, the ITR, decided last winter to cancel the half-hour roll-out period.

This untimed session was designed to allow teams to shakedown their cars and lay down some rubber in the pit lane prior to the first official free practice session.

The new for 2013 rule meant that no cars took to the track before Saturday morning.

After being unpopular with teams and drivers, the ITR therefore decided to reinstate the roll-out this Friday.

However, the session will only last 15 minutes and the number of laps completed by each driver will be limited.

The roll-out will remain untimed.

Worrying signs amid continued success.

It's good to be Audi. Bold designs, class-leading interiors, well-marketed technology, and Le Mans success have transformed the one-time also-ran into the number-two luxury brand in the world. And unlike its closest competitors, Audi also enjoys massive economies of scale as part of the Volkswagen Group.

Driving a Mercedes S-Class feels a lot like flying in first class.

There is one irrefutable truth about the Mercedes-Benz S-Class: this car is old. The current iteration of S-Class (codenamed the W221) has been on sale since 2005. In the eight years since, competition from Audi, BMW, Jaguar, and Porsche have made life a bit more difficult for the halo car with the three-pointed star.
