From June 10-15, London hosts the Bugatti Performance Week, allowing fans to admire the hot new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport and Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse. The two will be showcased together for the first time at Jack Barcklay Bugatti, Berkeley Square, alongside several other Veyron models.

The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport still holds the world speed record for a road car after recording 431.02 km/h in 2010. Its 8.0L W16 engine produces 1,200 horsepower and allows 0-100km/h acceleration in 2.5 seconds.

Meanwhile, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse set a new speed record for open-top production sports cars last April, reaching 408.84km/h at Volkswagen Group's proving grounds in Ehra-Lessien, Germany.

FYI, either one of these cars will set you back €1.9 million (approx. $2.57 million).

IndyCar: Ryan Briscoe back once again with Panther Racing

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
The Panther Racing team has confirmed that Ryan Briscoe will return with the squad for this weekend's IZOD IndyCar race at the famous Milwaukee Mile.

Briscoe is back with the team who he drove for in the doubleheader in Detroit two weeks ago.

After his stint, the Australian was replaced in the cockpit by Oriol Servia who took over for last week-end's Texas round.

Servia has already been confirmed to drive the car at next weekend's Iowa race. This is due to Briscoe's availability being subject to his existing sportscar commitments with Level 5 Motorsport.

Car manufacturer values

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Ever wonder what some companies may be worth? Their street value? How about Walmart? Their brand value is $36.2 billion. Coca-Cola? $78.4 billion. McDonald's? $90.3 billion. Google? $113.7 billion. And what about Apple? A whopping $185 billion.

I may have gone overboard with the examples, but I find these amounts to be incredibly fascinating. So, about the carmakers: Can you guess which is the most valuable?

If you know a little bit about the car business, you'll possibly have guessed Toyota. Despite the rough patch from a few years ago, Japan's largest car manufacturer continues to be the most valuable in the world at $26 billion.

The fact that Toyota maintains its top position is a testament to the maker's hard work, drive, and brilliant management. Too often companies are steered astray by people looking to make a short-term impact on the bottom line without looking at the big picture. Toyota clearly has a grasp on the Big Picture. And, even in the face of a huge crisis, Toyota remained focused and once more never lost sight of its master plan.

What about No. 2? Once more, and if you're an avid reader of car news, you know that BMW has always held its head up high as a very lucrative family-run business. In 2012, it was in the second spot. This year, they've fallen to the 3rd position with a worth of $23.2 billion.

Volkswagen now finds itself on the 2nd step of the podium with a value set at $23.7 billion. The remarkable thing here is that VW went from 4th position to 2nd thanks to a 33% increase in one short year. This, like Toyota, demonstrates a well built and executed plan to take over the car world. I'm willing to bet that VW won't immediately change course if someone drops a hat.

Mercedes-Benz comes in 4th at $20.3 billion; and the first American brand to show up is Ford, with a value set at $19.6 billion.

The Germans certainly have it when it comes to brand perception and worth as they account for four of the top 10 (Porsche being the other at $11.2 billion). The Japanese are not far behind with three makes in the same group (Nissan at $17.6 and Honda at $16.1 billion). Rounding out the top 10 are Hyundai at $8.7 billion, and Renault at 8.4 billion.

These numbers demonstrate that the buying consumer is interested in quality and a certain level of luxury. To further support this observation is the fact that Cadillac is the brand that met with the greatest jump in value with an increase of 51% year over year to $2.0 billion from 1.3.

Lower prices and faster charging times for 2013 Nissan LEAF

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Nissan Canada today unveiled pricing for the 2013 LEAF, which will arrive at dealerships in July. More affordable than the outgoing model, it will be available in three trim levels:
  • LEAF S: $31,698
  • LEAF SV: $34,998
  • LEAF SL: $38,398

What's more, residents of Ontario, Quebec, and BC are eligible for $8,500, $8,000, and $5,000 toward their purchase of a Nissan LEAF, respectively.

“With more than 60,000 Nissan LEAFs on the road globally, we are the leaders in zero-emission vehicles, and our class-leading product just got better,” said Brian Thomas, Director of Marketing, Nissan Canada Inc.

Upgrades to the 2013 Nissan LEAF include 17” alloy wheels, Around View Monitor and 7-speaker Bose audio system (SL models), as well as the availability of the Nissan LEAF App for Canadian Android users which will allow even more customers to control their LEAF from the comfort of their smartphone.

More importantly, perhaps, the new standard 6.6 kW on-board charger reduces 220V charging times by nearly half on all models.

My two-day experience with the 2013 Ford Fusion Energi

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
I've just handed back the keys to the awesome 2013 Ford Fusion Energi which I had the opportunity to test drive for two days. Yet, at the same time, I was glad to return to my good old 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan.

Say, what?

I have to admit I had a mostly wonderful time with the 2013 Ford Fusion Energi, the plug-in hybrid variant of Ford's sleek new midsize sedan. While I loved the silent operation in full electric mode, the accommodating interior, and the added convenience of MyFord Touch, the sheer lack of trunk space generated plenty of frustration -- with three kids to take care of, I need lots of cargo room, if only for a week's worth of groceries.

Oh, and what were the designers thinking when they put the cup holders at near elbow level? That's with my seat pushed a good deal back; I can't imagine how smaller drivers need to contort their body to grab their coffee.

Reactions from the family
My 14-year-old boy: “What? A plug-in car? Does this thing go fast? No? Man, that's a wheelbarrow!” (FYI, he dreams of becoming an F1 driver.)

My 11-year-old son: “Wooooooooowwwwwww! It's nice! How long do you have it? Just two days? Oh...”

My little 4-year-old: “Where's the other car?”
“At work, sweetie. Do you like mommy's new ride?”
“Yeah, but where has the other car gone?”

My husband: “Awesome!” (as he explored the Fusion's MyFord Touch interface).

City driving
My daily commute to work amounts to 22 kilometres, mostly in the city. The ability to run in full electric mode, coupled with the 2013 Ford Fusion Energi's range, allowed me to cover the entire distance without any intervention by the gasoline engine.

Once, with the battery on the verge of running empty, I was counting on red lights to let the regenerative brakes work their magic, but alas, Murphy's Law reared its ugly head and presented me with nothing but green lights! I wouldn't have been so stressed driving my Grand Caravan...

Impressive economy
At the end of each trip, the on-board computer displays various driving data including energy performance and remaining range. Every time I got back behind the wheel, my goal was to save even more gas than the previous time -- and that's one of the things that makes driving the 2013 Ford Fusion Energi so great.

Of course, the best was seeing “0.0L/100km” on the screen. My Grand Caravan does that, too... when I don't start the engine!

The morning after his first “wheelbarrow” experience, my eldest son was viewing the 2013 Ford Fusion Energi with a much different eye:

“Mom, can I just start the car?”
“No.”
“Oh, come on!!!”

My next car?
I have a soft spot for green cars, yet I also love my Grand Caravan, if only to avoid playing Tetris with the mountain of luggage we have to load for a family weekend getaway. That being said, the silent operation of the 2013 Ford Fusion Energi, combined with my not having to stop by the gas station (what a relief at $1.44 per litre!), had me thinking long and hard about my next car. One thing's for sure: If it's not all-electric, it most certainly will be hybrid!

F1: Bigger budget would ease Sauber crisis

From GMM

A bigger budget would help Sauber to emerge from its competitive crisis, team boss Monisha Kaltenborn has admitted.

The grey C32s were off the pace all weekend in Canada, and in the race both Nico Hulkenberg and Esteban Gutierrez retired after crashes.

Kaltenborn admitted that a bigger budget would help Sauber to pull out of its slump, but does not blame F1's 'show' for failing to attract more sponsors.

"The paradox is that the sport is very exciting, we are having very good races as a sport, so that part is working well. On the other hand, it is very difficult to attract more sponsors, which has more to do with the global economic climate," she told Brazil's Totalrace.

Kaltenborn admitted that Sauber's current situation would be "more comfortable" if the Hinwil based team was able to rely on a bigger budget.

"It's tough," she said, "and if we had more money, we could develop more quickly and probably get out of the situation that we are currently in. Now, we are always having to consider how much a new part is going to cost us."

F1: Helmut Marko denied Sebastian Vettel new contract before announcement

From GMM

Mere hours after denying the story, Red Bull announced that Sebastian Vettel is staying with the world champion team for at least two more years.

Earlier on Tuesday, when Germany's Sport Bild broke the news about the 25-year-old's contract extension for 2015, Dr Helmut Marko told SID news agency: "I don't know where this is coming from.

"There's nothing new," he insisted.

Hours later, Red Bull issued a press release announcing it is "happy to confirm" Vettel's signing of a new deal.

Previously, Vettel was committed only until the end of 2014, so Tuesday's news is in effect a one-year extension for 2015.

Vettel's current teammate Mark Webber only has a contract for this year.

German newspaper Welt said Vettel's new deal will certainly include a pay increase for the German, whose current retainer of EUR 11 million pales in comparison to Ferrari number 1 Fernando Alonso's estimated 28m.

Brazilian correspondent for O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper, Livio Oricchio, admitted Tuesday's news surprised him.

"With the radical change of rules next year, I would have thought he (Vettel) would wait to see who has developed the best solutions for the complex engineering challenge," he said.

Welt, however, quoted Dr Marko as saying: "The elements that will ensure Sebastian continues to feel comfortable with us have been created."

The German newspaper said Marko is referring to the recent contract extensions of Red Bull team boss, Christian Horner, as well as the 'genius' designer, Adrian Newey.

"Racing for another team this weekend will be another process in helping me understand the development of the new car and how it compares to my current ride," continued Labonte. "I'm not happy with our current performance level as a team and absolutely want to work hard to help our race team improve. My commitment continues to give the best efforts possible each weekend. That has never changed and this opportunity will hopefully make everyone, including myself, get a better understanding of where improvements can be made. We just completed our first test at Kentucky, which was valuable time spent on the track, that should assist in improving our team performance starting this weekend and going forward."

Bobby Labonte, the 2000 Sprint Cup Champion, will be making his 705th NASCAR Sprint Cup Series start this weekend.

In this NASCAR version of musical chairs AJ Allmendinger, who had been driving part time for Phoenix Racing, is taking Labonte's regular drive at JTG/Daugherty for up to five races this season.

A year after making its race debut at Le Mans in 2012, TOYOTA Racing returns with two TS030 HYBRIDs ; the No. 7 for Alex Wurz, Nicolas Lapierre and Kazuki Nakajima plus the No. 8 for Anthony Davidson, Sebastien Buemi and Stephane Sarrazin.

For the first time both driver line-ups will benefit from the 2013-specification TS030 HYBRID, which raced for the first time at Spa in the hands of the No. 7 crew.

Seven test sessions, including the official Le Mans test day last weekend, have shown the updated TS030 HYBRID is a significant step forward in terms of reliability and performance.

The preparation programme has included several successful endurance tests, designed to push the TS030 HYBRID and the team to the limit over 30 hours of continuous running.

The below graphic shows what the THS-R looks like, under the skin of the TS030 HYBRID.

WEC Toyota Racing
Photo: Toyota Racing

Under the skin
The powertrain consists of a 530hp V8, 3.4litre, normally-aspirated petrol engine combined with a 300hp hybrid system.

Under braking, in the designated hybrid recovery zones, the system harvests energy which is converted into electricity by the Motor Generator Unit (MGU), located between engine and gearbox, within the gearbox housing.

This electricity is transmitted, via a DENSO inverter, into the NISSHINBO super capacitor storage device, sited next to the driver in the cockpit.

When the driver accelerates, the hybrid boost is delivered automatically for around three seconds, with the electricity travelling from the super capacitor, through the inverter and into the MGU, which adds the power to that of the petrol engine and transmits it to the rear wheels.

F1: Michael Schumacher not regretting F1 retirement call

Michael Schumacher insists he has not regretted his final retirement from formula one "for a single moment".

At the end of a three-season comeback period that did not add to his record tally of 91 wins and seven titles, the 44-year-old German returned to retirement at the end of last year as Mercedes replaced him with Lewis Hamilton.

He told Bild newspaper the right call was made.

"If there had been at least the prospect of fighting for the world championship last year," said Schumacher, "then it might have been a different decision.

"But I'm very happy," he insisted, laughing that he is now a "private television commentator" on his couch during grands prix for his wife Corinna.

After more than two decades in the paddock, meanwhile, Schumacher also revealed that "a few people from Mercedes and Ferrari keep me in the loop" with F1's behind-the-scenes goings-on.

"But it's not as though I'm interested in everything," he added, revealing that he has put on a couple of kilograms since stepping out of the cockpit.

But he did return recently for a F1 demonstration run in his old 2011 Mercedes F1 car at the fabled Nordschleife.

Schumacher, now a Mercedes ambassador, revealed: "I do not think that was the last time I will sit in a Silver Arrows."

The new Porsche LMP1 sports prototype, which will compete in the sports car World Endurance Championship (WEC) and in the 24 Hours of Le Mans from 2014, successfully completed its first rollout today on the Porsche test track in Weissach.

Before the eyes of the entire Board of Porsche AG, Porsche works driver Timo Bernhard took his new ‘wheels' through its initial function check.

The LMP1 racer turned its first laps on the circuit several weeks earlier than originally planned. “We are well on schedule,” says Fritz Enzinger, Head of LMP1.

“Our newly formed team has worked with utmost concentration on getting this highly complex vehicle on the track as soon as possible. This allows us a few additional weeks for more testing and further development. From 2014, the regulations are primarily based on efficiency. This makes the competition amongst engineers more interesting and presents us with completely new challenges.”

Since the decision in mid-2011 to return with the LMP1 racer to top motorsport as a works effort, the Motorsport Centre at Weissach has grown significantly. A workshop and an administration building were built and accommodate around 200 employees who are responsible for the design, assembly and deployment of the LMP1 car. From the 2014 season, the racer will be fielded by a Weissach-based works squad.

“I was involved in the development of the new car right from the outset,” says Porsche works driver Timo Bernhard. “I'm very proud that I was the one to take our baby through its first paces today. Already now the car feels great. I look forward to testing the vehicle in the coming weeks and months with my friend and colleague Romain Dumas.”

F1: James Allison may design Honda test car

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
From GMM

Amid reports he could re-emerge at Ferrari or Red Bull, it appears former Lotus technical director James Allison is actually Honda-bound.

Allison is currently on 'gardening leave', after stepping down from his duties but remaining under contract to Lotus.

In the Finnish newspaper Turun Sanomat, correspondent Luis Vasconcelos claims his next destination is the Japanese marque Honda, who are returning to F1 in 2015 for a works engine collaboration with the great British team McLaren.

The move would appear to make sense, as Honda moves to quickly get up to speed with new rules after a five-year absence from F1, and McLaren reels from the departure to Mercedes of its highly rated technical director Paddy Lowe.

Vasconcelos said Briton Allison will apparently start his new job in 2014, long before Honda is bound by F1's regulations governing its 2015 foray.

That will mean the Japanese marque is free to run and develop its 1.6 litre V6 design throughout 2014 with a test car, and Turun Sanomat said these tests are likely to take place at the Japanese circuits Suzuka and Motegi.

Vasconcelos said: "According to our sources, Allison has accepted the offer and will lead a small group to produce a car for the testing of Honda's turbo engine."

UPDATE:
Mere hours after this report, McLaren spokesman Matt Bishop told on Wednesday: "This (report) is untrue."

F1: Ferrari said no to tire test with 2013 car

From GMM

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has admitted he wants F1's governing body to "prosecute" Mercedes for the secret Pirelli tire test.

Led by former Ferrari team boss Jean Todt, the FIA will convene its new international tribunal next Thursday after charging Mercedes and Pirelli with allegedly breaching the rules with a recent private test at Barcelona.

"We have faith in the FIA," Montezemolo is quoted as saying by the Ferrari website.

"Let's hope formula one can maintain its professionalism and we have faith that those who attempt to circumvent the regulations are pursued and prosecuted, or rather more prosecuted than pursued," he added.

It is known that Pirelli also approached Red Bull about a test, but team boss Christian Horner said no because of his reservations about the rules.

"Of course we said no," Ferrari spokesman Renato Bisignani told Brazil's O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper, confirming that the Italian team also turned down an approach from Pirelli.

"The regulations prohibit the use of a car from this year," he added, clarifying that Ferrari's Pirelli tire test just after Bahrain was with a 2011 car.

The general consensus among F1 circles is that Mercedes will be found guilty and penalised in some manner.

"I don't know whether Mercedes will have points deducted or Ross Brawn will lose his job, but I do think there will be penalties because something was not quite right," F1 team owner turned pundit Eddie Jordan said on Servus TV.

Electric bus charges in 15 seconds!

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
An electric bus that can charge in only 15 seconds is currently being tested in Geneva, Switzerland, shuttling from the airport to the Palexpo convention centre a few minutes away.

A “flash charging” system connects to the bus' roof-mounted batteries with a laser-controlled moving arm rather than overhead lines and traditional tramway poles. The bus, called Tosa, is charged directly at selected stops with a 15-second, 400-kilowatt energy boost while the passengers enter and leave the bus. At the end of the bus line, a 3- to 4-minute, 200-kilowatt boost enables a full recharge of the batteries.

Introduced at the 60th congress of the International Association of Public Transport (UTIP), which took place in late May, the electric bus stands 18.7 metres long and can carry as many as 135 passengers.

Audi has equipped 13,000 cars with a wireless system that allows for two-way payment communications between car and parking facility - no more tickets and change required!

A pilot project is underway in Ingolstadt, Germany. Audi operates nine parking lots across the city totalling 6,200 parking spaces as well as 21 entry and exit points.

When approaching a parking facility, the system recognizes the owner-specific RFID transmitter mounted on the windshield of the vehicle, keeps tabs on the parking times, and automatically debits charges from the user's account every month. It can all be activated online through a smartphone app.

Eventually, Audi would like to combine wireless parking payment with parking assist so drivers could find the nearest available parking space and get there easily.

IndyCar: Team Penske gets fined

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Following an official inspection after last weekend's IZOD IndyCar event at the Texas Motor Speedway, Team Penske has been fined and docked points after it was discovered that the car did not comply with regulation.

According to reports, Helio Castroneves' car did not comply with the rule that specifies the height of the underwing(?) exit.

As a result, the Penske outfit was fined $35,000 and docked 15 points.

The fine comes exactly one year after last year's winner in Texas, Justin Wilson, was also docked five championship points. In the same event, Dale Coyne Racing was fined $7,000 for using a sidepod mounted aero device, which had been banned prior to that race.

Castroneves is the current series leader with a 22-point advantage over Marco Andretti.

F1: 30 years of innovations in Formula 1, as seen by Dickie Stanford

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Williams' race and test team manager, Dickie Stanford, is one of the most experienced members of the famous British team, and over three decades, has witnessed some dramatic changes in Formula 1.

Stanford started working in motorsport by helping a friend who was racing Formula Ford in Great Britain.

The young man then climbed the motorsport ladder and finally got his break in Formula 1 after he started working at Williams in 1985.

Dickie Stanford Williams F1

Subsequently, he has worked with legendary drivers such as Keke Rosberg (not Nico!), Nigel Mansell, Nelson Piquet, Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna.

“When I joined Williams, there were just 80 people in total in the team, this included Frank [Williams] and the cleaners,” he told Auto123.com. “The race team was about 25 people in total, so it's quite different of the 560 people we have at the moment.

“Formula 1 was completely different back then, as we didn't have all the electronics that we have today.

“We had the Honda turbo engine and the longitudinal gearbox, but there was no data recording and laptops were only starting to appear.

“We used to sit with the driver,” Stamford recalls. “Then he'd tell you what he thought the car was doing, so we'd then look at the tires, and take it from there. It was more of a mental set-up than an electronic set-up.”

The mid-to-late 1980s were the era of Formula 1's V6 turbo engines, and enjoyed unlimited boost and ran on “rocket” fuel, as they were enormously powerful but had the tendency to blow into pieces as a result of the frantic pace.

Dickie Stanford Williams F1
Dickie Stanford (Photo: WRI2)

“I think we had 1300 horsepower,” continued Stanford. “Cars were spinning their rear wheels in sixth gear, and in race trim, we had 850-900 horsepower but the rev range was not that big, but the power came in with a bang!

“At a couple of tests with Honda, we tried blanking the waste gate the way BMW was doing in those days, however, Honda found that they could actually manage the power better by not blanking it [the waste gate], but we never raced the FW11 in that configuration¨, he added.

However, tragedy struck the Williams team when Frank Williams sustained a car accident in 1986 in Southern France after a test at the Paul Richard circuit.

“It was pretty devastating for the team because we knew Frank was in a serious condition,” rued Stanford about the accident. “Patrick (Head) and the top executives at Williams - and remember, I was just a mechanic back then - kept it mostly away from the regular team members.

“They gave us just enough information about Frank so we could concentrate on what we were doing.

“Frank was all about racing, so it was up to us to get on with our jobs.

“However, I remember asking myself “is this the end?” The team principal is in serious condition, so what's going to happen?

“It was the first time that I had to deal with something serious like that and I think the team handled it very well.”

Despite Sir Frank's absence in the mid to late 1980s, the team always favoured strong headed drivers, such as Mansell, Rosberg and Piquet; men's men who appear to fit into the team's ethos of ‘drivers race, engineers engineer'.

“Yes, [they were strongheaded drivers], but they were professional,” recalls Stanford. “Major sponsors were just coming in to F1, so the drivers still had a life of their own.

“Nowadays sponsorship plays such of a role that the drivers have to be careful not offend anybody. Back in the ‘80s, the drivers were more in control of their own time. I remember Keke and Nigel doing very few sponsors events at race meetings, as they were done between races.”

Dickie Stanford Williams F1

However, after Williams' championship winning years of the late 1980s and mid-1990s, the manufacturer era of Formula 1, which began in the early 2000s brought unprecedented changes for the Grove based squad.

“Testing for us was the hardest in early 2000 with the BMW engine, as we ran three test cars” Stanford continued. “We ran two test cars at one circuit, and the third one at another track, so for example, we had two cars at Paul Ricard and a third one at let's say at Monza.

“In the ‘80s, we'd normally do just one big test every two races.”

However, after 28 years, is Dickie Stanford still enjoying working in Formula 1?

Absolutely.

“Every day is a different challenge,” he continues. “No race is the same; no year is the same.

“[There are] different engines, and different bits and pieces on the cars. This is what makes it exciting.

“Additionally, getting some 100 people to each race is a massive challenge these days [...] plus the cars and the equipment... there is also 27 tons of air freight and two sea containers to the far away races, then when you come to in Europe, we have four transporters and seven motorhome trucks. It never stops! But I love it!”

The Williams veteran concluded all of this with a big smile.

NASCAR Canadian Tire: First oval of the season

The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series will be back once again at the Delaware Speedway in Ontario this coming weekend for the first oval-track race of the 2013 calendar, the EMCO 200.

This will be the fifth visit of the Canadian Tire series to the half-mile oval track located in Southern Ontario. Veteran D.J. Kennington has been dominant there, winning three of the four Delaware races and leading a series-best 392 laps.

On the other hand, 2013 championship points leader, Louis-Philippe Dumoulin has just one Delaware start - a 10th-place finish in 2012 - under his belt.
