Amid criticism of the Italian marque's approach, Martin Brundle has defended F1 tire supplier Pirelli.

After the winter test period and the first two races of 2013, countless drivers and top teams including Red Bull and Mercedes complained loudly that disintegrating tires are now overly and artificially dominating the sport.

Mark Webber sees it as a balance between competition on the one hand, and 'the show' on the other.

"I think it's quite good for the neutral, good for the fans and probably good for new people that are following formula one," said the Australian. "But for the old, let's say people who have more of a grasp of the sport and more education of where the sport was, it's still a little bit hit and miss."

F1 Pirelli bullets
Photo: WRi2

The plain-speaking Red Bull driver's gripe is that F1 drivers are now becoming experts at tire management, rather than flat-out sporting superstars.

"You watch Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer and it's playing with the lines, it's playing with precision for a five set match and we all enjoy watching that. But at the moment we're driving at eight and a half tenths, eight tenths. The racing is completely around nursing and trying to make the tires survive rather than driving a car on the limit. You don't see us really pushing on the limit (now). That's my little rant," he concluded.

Understandably, Pirelli is copping the brunt of the blame for the situation.

But former driver turned television pundit Brundle insisted: "They (Pirelli) have only done what was asked of them -- to make the race more exciting.

"They could easily come out with hard tires for the next grand prix. But do we really want that?" he is quoted by Speed Week.

"The balance has to be right. I don't think anybody wants to see boring one-stop races. On the other hand, five stops would be farcical. I think two to three stops is a good compromise," Brundle added.

"I can understand if some drivers are not happy -- we do want to see the fastest guy win, not the best at managing the tires. It is a dilemma: should the sport have the upper-hand, or (should) the entertainment value? We must never forget that the first could not exist without the second," he said.

Amid the criticism and the pressure applied by big-hitters like Red Bull, Pirelli has agreed to "review" the situation after the Bahrain grand prix later this month.

But, in the end, Pirelli has the support of the ultimate decision-maker.

"Do you prefer the racing today, or when nobody was overtaking and everybody knew before the start, with a fair degree of certainty, who would win?" F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone told Brazil's O Estado de S.Paulo.

Max Papis spent most of his career racing single seaters, working his way up the ladder to Formula 1 where he contested a few Grands Prix with Arrows in 1995. He then came to the U.S. where he raced in the CART series, Rolex Grand-Am, and now NASCAR.

In this video, Papis tested what we believe was his NASCAR Nationwide car on a road course. The crew filmed his foot dance on the pedals.

Note that he started his run by braking with his left foot, before he switched to the more traditional heel-and-toe, using the clutch pedal again.

Note also how easily Papis can spin the rear wheels under acceleration, especially when the tires are still cold.

F1: Webber asked to save fuel when passed by Vettel in Malaysia

From GMM

Almost two weeks after the fact, the 'Multi-21' affair keeps racing.

Germany's Auto Motor und Sport now reports a new fact: just as Sebastian Vettel ignored the team order to hold station, Mark Webber had turned down his engine because he was saving fuel.

"The truth in F1 usually only comes to light piecemeal," said correspondent Michael Schmidt.

It was already known that the chasing Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg were having fuel-saving issues.

But Red Bull claimed it issued the team order because it was worried about the drivers burning up their fragile Pirelli tyres and being swallowed up by their silver rivals.

"Obviously there was more to it than what Red Bull wanted to say," Schmidt added. "Apparently in the first 42 laps Webber had consumed clearly more fuel than Vettel and was already in the red. Vettel was also able to drive in (Webber's) slipstream for 12 laps and use DRS. So Red Bull not only feared an accident, but also that Webber could run out of gas. So he was asked to turn down his performance just to get to the line."

2014 Mazda CX-5 GT Review

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
It's amazing to think that a relatively little thing can make such a huge difference. By increasing the 4-cylinder's displacement by 0.5L, the 2014 Mazda CX-5 has been transformed.

And absolutely for the better. The 2014 Mazda CX-5 has, in one swift move, put aside all my misgivings that came to light after my test drive of a 2013 CX-5 last year. So good is the work done by Mazda on the 2014 that the CX-5 hoisted itself near the top of my list of favourite compact crossovers alongside the Kia Sportage and Volkswagen Tiguan.

Almost overnight, the 2014 Mazda CX-5 became powerful and pleasant to go along with its already good looks. Mazda has done a stellar job.

What is a Mazda CX-5?

The Mazda CX-5 is a most compact crossover that brings the typical Mazda sporty flair to the table. The recipe is so successful that the roads are covered with CX-5s.

The CX-5's five-passenger capacities make it an ideal runabout for small families that consider right-sizing an important aspect. The CX-7, which it replaces, did well but clearly the CX-5 packaging makes it all the more attractive and now far more competitive.

Technicalities
SKYACTIV: You may have heard of it. It is what defines all of the latest products from the Hiroshima, Japan-based company. The CX-5 was the first to be endowed with the combination of uber-efficient and lightweight components that sum up what SKYACTIV brings to the table.

The base engine is a 155 hp 2.0L. The new-for-2014 is a 2.5L 4-cylinder good for 184 hp. Torque numbers are the ones that speak volumes as they jumped to 185 lb-ft from 150.

With the $22,995 FWD 2.0L GX, a 6-speed manual ‘box is offered. For all others, whether front or AWD, they get a 6-speed automatic.

The price range increases to $35,045 for the as-tested, fully decked out GT with the Technology package. At this price, the 2014 Mazda CX-5 is equipped with navigation, Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) and bi-xenon headlights.

SCBS is a frontal collision avoidance system that functions at low speeds such as in the city or traffic. It uses laser sensors that detect an obstacle or vehicle ahead and, should the driver fail to attempt obstacle avoidance, SCBS will automatically prime the brakes or, to the extreme, apply the brakes and reduce engine output.

Driving the Mazda CX-5
A whole new world opened up to me when I left the office with my 2014 Mazda CX-5. From the onset, I've always liked the CX-5, but had a small issue with the limited power available from the 2.0L. For most, it was adequate but the extra grunt from the 2.5L proves to me that a little more power is a whole lot better.

The extra torque is the most appreciable result in the bump in displacement. In full swing at 4,000 rpm, the engine is a willing revver as it'll happily climb to 6,000 revs, quickly. From there, the autobox does quick work of jumping up and down from one gear to another.

The transmission is especially good and deserves its own paragraph. At low speeds, it upshifts expertly swiftly. Under hard acceleration, the box is equally at home swapping cogs and keeps up nicely with the 2.5L. The manual mode is also very good. Not only are the + and - on the right ends of the shifter's travel, but downshifts are matched with throttle blips.

From a ride stand point, the 2014 Mazda CX-5 fairs better than the 2013. For some reason, the CUV's suspension is far more relaxed than the 2013's. The CX-5 continues to handle impressively well, however, without the harness and plain discomfort I experienced last year.

Steering remains precise without being especially crisp, and I really do enjoy the strong and positive feel delivered by the four-wheel disc brakes.

Inside and out of the Mazda CX-5
The 2014 Mazda CX-5 is a Mazda through and through. The shell's shape in modern, sharp and dynamic: the perfect combination to attract the widest possible clientele. The standard 17” alloys fare well, although the GT's 19” wheels take it all up a notch.

The cabin is well appointed, generally speaking. Fit and finish are quite good and the materials (soft- and hard-touch) blend well into each other. My only gripe here is the variety of display colors and fonts from the gauges touch screen and HVAC controls. There's a lack of continuity that Mazda should address in time.

The seats up front provide the proper amount of support where needed and the rear bench is fine for two adults. The boot is surprisingly deep and capable, perfect for a stroller and some day-bags.

Comparing the Mazda CX-5
The 2014 Mazda CX-5 can now be favourably compared with every other member of its segment, namely the Volkswagen Tiguan, Kia Sportage, Ford Escape, and Toyota RAV4.

My only real concern with the CX-5 was my observed 10.5L/100km average consumption. The numbers are far higher than indicated by Transport Canada, but they find themselves in the norm for most of the compact CUVs we've driven over the last two years.

Its price range is also spot on with its most direct competition.

F1: Team Lotus targets quicker pit stops with new rear jack

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Lotus race team manager, Paul Seaby said his target is to improve pit stop times before the team travels to China for the next Formula 1 Grand Prix.

“On Wednesday the crew came in in for pit stop practice. We had a good, productive day, starting with a briefing to analyse where improvements need to be made before completing about forty practice stops with a running show car. We tried out a new rear jack which proved to be an instant hit, raising the rear of the car a lot quicker. We're looking for tenths of a second, so any small details like that can make a big difference,” said Seaby in an interview posted on the Lotus team website.

“Our best stops are down to about 2.4 seconds now and we're consistently hitting between 2.5 and 2.7 seconds which is not bad at all for a live stop,” he added.

Seaby indicated that the crew members are working hard with trainers.

“We have two in-house trainers working with the crew in the gym, predominantly focusing on the muscles and movements required during pit stops. This involves mainly core and a fair bit of arm strengthening work too. There's a lot of twisting involved in a pit stop and the equipment is quite heavy - in particular the wheel guns - so this can help our guys prepare for the challenge. We're looking at starting a training programme to be carried out in the hotel rooms during a race weekend too,” Seaby said.

“For both myself and the crew, the main priority at the moment is to get our pit stops more competitive and - more importantly - consistent. We want to give the drivers a better chance of keeping up with the cars in front, or preferably further ahead of those behind! We know we can do it; it's just a matter of instilling that confident mind set to allow them to relax and breeze through the stops as second nature. There's certainly no lack of effort, and we're sure it will come,” he explained.

Formula Renault 3.5: The 2013 season begins in Monza

The Formula Renault 3.5 series, the top category of the World Series by Renault will kick off its 2013 season on the very fast circuit of Monza, Italy this weekend.

This series serves as a good training ground for future Formula 1 drivers. Leading drivers over the winter, Antonio Félix da Costa (Arden Caterham), Stoffel Vandoorne (Fortec Motorsports) and Will Stevens (P1 Motorsport), are tipped as favourites.

After racing at Motorland Aragon, the Circuit Paul Ricard and the Circuit de Catalunya, the 26 drivers entered in the FR 3.5 Series have been able to prepare a season that promises to offer a very high level of competition. This season, the single seater are fitted with a DRS, Drag Reduction system similar to what's used in F1.

After winning four races last year, Antonio Félix da Costa is considered as the top favourite. If he had not missed the first three meetings of the 2012 season, the Portuguese driver might well have prevented the title-deciding clash between Robin Frijns and Jules Bianchi. This time, the Arden Caterham driver will be present right from the kick-off.

His opponent, Stoffel Vandoorne has the right cards to replay Robin Frijns' exploit. Like the Dutchman, Stoffel is the reigning Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 champion. Thanks to the €500 000 prize that came with the title, he has been able to climb up to the next level under the best possible conditions, inheriting the seat of the standing champion.

Since these two drivers monopolised most of the best times this winter, they deserve their position at the top of the list. The most experienced drivers who could determine the outcome of the race include Will Stevens, Nico Müller (International Draco Racing), Kevin Magnussen (Dams), Marco Sørensen (Lotus), Daniil Move (SMP Racing by Comtec), Arthur Pic (AV Formula) and André Negrão (International Draco Racing), who all set foot on the podium in 2012.

Amongst the newcomers, we must watch out for Norman Nato (Dams), who took 4th position in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0. Formerly F2, F3 GP3 drivers, Jazeman Jaafar (Carlin), Matias Laine (P1 Motorsport), Christopher Zanella and Sergey Sirotkin (ISR) will be the other contenders for "best rookie".

F1: Bernie Ecclestone not worried about Bahrain unrest

From GMM

Bernie Ecclestone has played down reports civil unrest could yet again affect the running of Bahrain's grand prix.

Ever since the revolutionary Arab Spring of early 2011, formula one's annual visit to the island Kingdom has been under a dark cloud of controversy and uncertainty.

A report in the Daily Mail this week said there could be problems yet again, with fresh graffiti on a wall west of the capital Manama depicting an F1 car with the words 'No for the bloody formula'.

F1 chief executive Ecclestone, however, said he is not concerned.

"I haven't had any negative reports from anybody there," he told Reuters, ahead of his sport's forthcoming double-header in China and then Bahrain.

"Somebody who actually lives there came to see me yesterday and said everything's very normal. I think (the opposing sides) are talking now anyway, so I don't think they'll upset the talks by making protests," the 82-year-old added.

"It didn't help them last year, so if they had any brains they'd just get on with their talks."

Bernie Ecclestone also suggested that the long-term future of the controversial race is secure.

"They do a very, very good job of the race, the whole support from the top is good. No problems," he said.

F1: Paul di Resta worried about 2013 development balance

From GMM

Paul di Resta is worried Sahara Force India will struggle to keep up with the development race in 2013.

Driving for one of F1's small-to-middle budget teams, the Scot is concerned that the huge technical challenge of improving the current car as well as preparing for the radical new rules in 2014 will be a major hurdle for the Silverstone squad.

"We have fewer resources than the top teams," the 26-year-old is quoted by Speed Week.

"This will be a disadvantage. At some point we will need to shift development to the 2014 car. Until then, we need to develop really well, because from June or July we will have to stop (developing the 2013 car)."

Some, however, are concerned about the noises being made by Paul di Resta; linking his dip in form late last year to his disappointment in missing out on a top drive for 2014.

"Paul di Resta seems to moan quite a lot," Speed Week quoted a source as saying. "I would like to see him focus more on beating his teammate."

2013 Honda CR-V Preview

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Highlights*
Reliability, generous legroom, an ergonomic layout, and good residual value make the Honda CR-V a smart choice for compact SUV/CUV shoppers. It's also comfortable and nicely equipped.

Lowlights*
On the other hand, the 2013 Honda CR-V's performance and driving excitement fail to match a number of rivals. Moreover, soundproofing and rearward visibility are said to be insufficient.

Pricing
The base LX model starts at $27,645, and comes standard with many convenient features such as Honda's intelligent Multi-Information Display (i-MID), a rearview camera, air conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity, and more. Next up is the EX model at $29,595, which includes automatic climate control, a sunroof, and automatic headlights. Both are available with Real Time AWD for an extra $2,000 or so.

Farther up the ladder, you'll find the EX-L model. For $33,895, buyers get AWD, leather upholstery on the seats and steering wheel, a power adjustable driver's seat, and 360 watts of sound. However, those looking for a luxurious CR-V will best be served by the Touring model, which encompasses all of the above along with GPS-based navigation, an auto-dimming mirror, and roof rails. This one retails from $35,795.

Fuel consumption
Without the Real Time AWD system, the 2013 Honda CR-V burns 9.0L/100km in the city, 6.4L/100km on the highway, and 7.8L/100km combined. These numbers jump to 9.2/6.6/8.1 when you add AWD.

New for 2013
The Honda CR-V was completely redesigned for 2013, and now boasts sportier, more refined looks. Also, engineers reduced internal friction in a move that contributes to superior power (+5 hp) and torque (+2 lb-ft).

Styling
Key cosmetic changes include stretched headlights, a more aggressive front grille, and a whole new interpretation of the CR-V's signature vertical taillights. The side windows feature a chrome surrounding and a sharp wedge toward the back.

Cargo capacity
The 2013 Honda CR-V can swallow 1,054 or up to 2,007 litres of cargo, depending on the seating configuration.

Powertrain

Unlike some of the newer players, this Japanese crossover makes do without a turbocharger and direct injection. However, the reliable 2.4L 4-cylinder engine in the 2013 Honda CR-V produces a healthy 185 horsepower and 163 lb-ft of torque through a 5-speed automatic transmission. No manual gearbox is available.

Safety

Six airbags, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) with Traction Control, Hill Start Assist, 4-wheel ABS, and a tire pressure monitoring system are some of the safety highlights of the 2013 Honda CR-V, regardless of trim level.

Competitors

Volkswagen Tiguan, Nissan Rogue, Mazda CX-5, Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Escape, Kia Sportage, Subaru Forester, Toyota RAV4, ">Hyundai Tucson

Indian roads patrolled by… cardboard officers?

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
In an effort to curb traffic violations and accidents, authorities in Bangalore, India, are using cardboard cutouts of police officers to scare drivers. Three of the most problematic areas have been targeted.

“Drivers in Indian cities violate traffic rules when there are no cops around -- they jump traffic lights and go the wrong way on one-way streets,” Bangalore police commissioner M.A. Saleem told AFP.

Using cardboard officers may sound silly, but it works. In fact, similar measures have been deployed around the world including in North America, the U.K., and Thailand.

“It's good. From a distance it looks like a real cop. Two or three times we thought it was a real policeman standing there, and we slowed down,” some local drivers said.

One cardboard cutout was stolen last week, but that has not discouraged Saleem, who said the fake policemen will now be removed at night to reduce chances of theft.

He added that 10 others could soon be installed on the roads of Bangalore.

My list of Top NYIAS Unveilings holds a number of cars that I can't wait to drive, but there were other cars on the show floor that may not have been as new, however, I'm still very much looking forward to putting them through their paces.

Rast and Mayr-Melnhof won on the road but were later given a 30 second penalty for failing to switch their engine off at the mandatory pit stop.

Sebastien Loeb Racing McLaren MP4-12C, which started form pole position in the hands of Sebastien Loeb.

The battle for the lead later came to a head after the pit stops, when Loeb's teammate, Alvaro Parente touched Rast, spinning the German. However, a retrospective penalty was then given to the No. 9 McLaren, as Loeb was earlier adjudged to have unbuckled his belts before his car came to rest at his pit stop.

The McLaren re-joined and eventually finished in 5th position on the road.
