2014 Nissan Rogue SV Review

The newly redesigned 2014 Nissan Rogue looks much more rugged and masculine than the first-generation model. It can accommodate a small-to-medium family and all their gear, while posting attractive fuel economy ratings for a compact crossover.

IndyCar: Paul Tracy may contest the 2014 Indianapolis 500

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Canadian racer Paul Tracy may be joining old friends Jacques Villeneuve and Juan Pablo Montoya as he may try to qualify for the 2014 Indy 500.

Tracy hasn't raced in the Indy 500 since 2011. That year, he finished 25th for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing and it is the same team that might just be interested in putting Tracy back in the car for this year's race.

Villeneuve, 42, has not raced in the Indy 500 since he won the race in 1995. Montoya, 38, made his last start in the race in 2000.

"I've had a couple of phone calls," the 45-year-old Tracy said.

"I've talked to Dreyer and Reinbold. They're trying to put something together, and I'm on their list. It's not something that I'm completely chasing after, but if it happens, it happens. It's not like I have my heart set on it. It's interesting with Jacques coming back, and I hear Robby Gordon is trying to get in. There's a bunch of guys who I raced against that are trying to do it.”

2014 Ford Focus Titanium Review

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Consumers often think cheap and cheerful when thinking of small cars, but this is certainly not the case with the 2014 Ford Focus -- in fact, far from it. The heavy European influence in its styling and design points to the fact that small is still considered beautiful by our friends across the pond, and that size shouldn't necessarily relate to comfort and prestige.

Yes, the Ford Focus skips the no-frills small-car image entirely and looks upmarket in all of its guises, particularly in the case of the top-of-the-line Titanium model (our tester). It's a vehicle up for the challenge of comparison with the likes of BMW's MINI, VW's GTI, and perhaps even certain Fiat 500 models we've seen of late. These obviously all differ in style/size/performance and in certain other aspects, yet they all have one particular thing in common, you're just as likely to see one of these parked in the garage alongside their owners' other cars (an S-Class, an Audi A8, or even a Bentley) because they're simply perfect for everyday use!

What is a Ford Focus?
On North American roads for well over a decade now, the Ford Focus is a compact car and for the first part of 2012 actually overtook the Corolla as the No. 1 selling nameplate in the world. Now in its third generation, the Ford Focus is offered as a hatch or sedan and in with a variety of powertrain options as well as trims.

2014 Ford Focus Titanium Price & Specs
Our 2014 Ford Focus five-door Titanium hatchback started out at $25,799. However, add power moonroof, power driver's seat, Nav and the automated parking system, plus a few other items like the Blue Candy Metallic paint and delivery charges, and you end up at just a tad over $30k ($30,777). For this, you'll receive a well-appointed five-door parking-friendly hatchback with enough curb appeal to take on any in its class and one or two above!

Driving the 2014 Ford Focus Titanium
The Focus drives like a Euro-designed vehicle, which means it's tight and maneuverable in the twists and turns, yet can occasionally yell ouch should you come across one of those road craters we Canadians call “winter potholes” (I guess they don't have those in Europe). Of course, all vehicles are a compromise when it comes to handling and comfort, and smaller cars typically mean shorter wheelbases that only exacerbate the issue. On the other hand, with its wheels positioned as they are on the Focus, the vehicle performs quite well on highway surfaces.

Its 2.0L I-4 GDI engine provides plenty of power, although I found the 6-speed automatic occasionally confused about what I wished it to do with said power (I'd probably prefer the optional manual box myself). However, it's a fun and quite lively machine that offers reduced body roll compared to many in its category.

Being a somewhat sporty hatch, overall vision is relatively good until one glances in the rearview mirror. However, this minor irritant is taken care of by the suitably sized door mirrors Ford has seen wise to fit. So, although this takes some adjusting to, it's not really an issue.

Inside and Out of the 2014 Ford Focus Titanium
The exterior of the 2014 Ford Focus Titanium is bang up-to-date in design terms. Its face supplies just the right amount of aggression (I like this on a small car), and its stylish headlamp units positively dominate the rest. With some well-chosen 17” rims and a hint of chrome here and there, this little hatchback simply oozes class.

Stepping inside, buyers enter a well laid out cockpit where each and every control appears to be exactly where one might expect them to be, and the quality matches the looks of the exterior. Take the steering wheel for instance, which is quite chunky and sports-like, yet well designed with its controls not looking like an afterthought.

The Focus Titanium is jammed packed with the up-to-the-minute technology we've come to expect from Ford. It surely carries enough features to please anyone/everyone, and the optional Automated Parking System will certainly appeal to downtown buyers.

Comparing the 2014 Ford Focus Titanium
The 2014 Ford Focus Titanium plays in a fairly hectic marketplace, as several small-car products are now upping their game. Its competition; MINI Cooper, VW Golf, Fiat 500, Mazda3, Chevy Cruze, Mitsubishi Lancer, Nissan Sentra... How many more would you like?

The Focus is, however, one of the true benchmarks in this field and it's not difficult to see why. As I've mentioned above, the Ford Focus Titanium is as much at home on the streets of London/Paris as it is parked on a driveway in Mississauga or Montreal. Put simply, it's a vehicle which fits nicely into anyone's lifestyle and, if other motorists feel you're only driving the Focus because your Bentley is in for service, is that really going to upset you?

Endurance: Lotus forced to miss Silverstone WEC race

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Due to delays caused by an unavoidable change in engine supplier, the Lotus LMP team will not be competing at the opening round of the 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship in Silverstone later this month.

The Kodewa-run team had planned to use an Audi DTM-based V8 engine in its T129, but that option failed to materialise in time.

The team has decided to switch to an AER's V6 biturbo, but that requires quite a bit of work.

“It was extremely frustrating to be let down by our original engine supplier. We were only notified late December that the supplier of the original engine, a naturally aspirated V8, could not deliver on time,” said Boris Bermes, Lotus LMP Head of Operations.

“We quickly made the decision to work with AER (Advanced Engine Research) with a V6 turbo and we're very happy with the current collaboration. Since the changeover we have worked flat out to ensure that the Lotus LMP car is ready as soon as possible.”

All efforts are now concentrated on producing the best possible set-up ahead of the second round of the championship in Spa in May.

GM recalls: Two engineers put on leave, cost of recalls explodes

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
General Motors president and CEO Mary Barra has put two engineers on a paid leave following the series of untimely recalls that have seriously hurt the automaker's reputation in recent weeks.

This comes after Barra spent two days before the U.S. Congress to shed light on the situation.

The fact that GM technicians were aware of the problems since 2001 and that no recall or sanction ensued within a reasonable amount of time really angered congressmen.

GM now plans to spend $1.7 billion as part of the recalls, more than double the $750 million it initially projected.

F1: Sauber’s Simona de Silvestro to make F1 test debut

Simona de Silvestro will shortly make her formula one test debut.

The 25-year-old female Swiss driver, best known for her Indycar exploits, recently became "affiliated" with the Ferrari-powered Sauber team.

It emerged early this week that she underwent a seat fitting at Sauber's Hinwil factory, and Speed Week now reports that she will make her test debut at the end of this month.

The report said de Silvestro will drive a few-year-old Ferrari at the Italian marque's Fiorano test track.

Another Sauber test driver, Russian teen Sergey Sirotkin, tested for the Swiss team in Bahrain earlier this week.

It is believed Sauber prioritised the test for Sirotkin so that he can obtain his mandatory super license and take part in Friday practice at Sochi later this year.

Linked with new Russian team backers, the 18-year-old managed the necessary 300 kilometres at a competitive pace.

"My shoes were too small," said Sirotkin, "and it was pretty painful when I was braking. When we changed the shoes, it was still not the best and difficult to drive.

"It was not easy, but I am glad we completed the 300 kms," he added.

Mazda announces recall on 2001-2004 Tribute

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Mazda Canada is recalling 13,182 Tribute SUVs from 2001-2004 to correct a problem with the suspension.

On certain vehicles registered and operated in areas where road salt is used on the roadways during winter months for extended time periods (Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland-Labrador), the forward attachment point for the lower control arm may separate from the Tribute's subframe.

Since this problem could affect handling and increase the risk of a crash, Mazda dealers will install a newly designed reinforcement cross-brace.

Land Rover creates invisible hood

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Land Rover has developed an augmented reality system allowing drivers to see through the hood of their vehicle. It will officially debut at the New York Auto Show next week.

How does it work? A camera mounted under the front fascia captures the terrain, and a projector displays the image onto the windshield. Obstacles thus become easier to spot and avoid, especially on inclines.

While most Land Rover owners will never climb mountains, the company insists the new system will come in handy when parking in tight surroundings, for instance.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class aerodynamics tested by… cats? (video)

Mercedes-Benz apparently loves animals. After using a chicken to demonstrate how Magic Body Control works, the German automaker turned to cats to show how aerodynamic the new A-Class is.

William the cat has been specially trained for the occasion and is used to working in front of cameras (he's been starring in videos for more than a decade). Hopefully its claws didn't leave marks on the car....

WTCC: Citroens fly in first test in Marrakech

The Citroën Total WTCC team gave an impressive proof of the shape they are in during the first test session at Marrakech Friday.

From the very beginning the French team's drivers topped the time sheet, improving their pace lap after lap.

The rest of the field was left behind, with a number of competitors being very cautious while they are still trying to get used to the new cars.

Eventually, reigning WTCC champion Yvan Muller set the fastest lap of 1m44.513, followed by teammates Sebastien Loeb (1m44.945) and Jose Maria Lopez (1m45.161).

Campos Racing's Hugo Valente emerged as best of the rest in his Chevrolet RML car, however his best time of 1m46.470 remained nearly two seconds off Muller's Citroen.

Tiago Monteiro ranked fifth in the fastest Honda Civic (1m46.503) ahead of Rob Huff's LADA Granta (1m46.798).

Tom Coronel, Mehdi Bennani, Tom Chilton and Gabriele Tarquini rounded off the top 10.

F1: Political instability delays talks of Canadian Grand Prix

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
The current agreement between the organisers of the Canadian Grand Prix and Bernie Ecclestone (FOM) ends in June with the presentation of the 2014 edition.

Francois Dumontier, promoter of the race, and the FOM have been talking for the past two years about a new contract that would cover a 10-year period from 2015 to 2024.

Despite all the work, a new contract has not been signed yet.

Dumontier openly talked about the affair yesterday during a speech he did in front of the members of the Chamber of commerce of Saint-Laurent-Mont-Royal.

"Sixty days before the 2014 Grand Prix, there is an urgency," Dumontier admitted.

"It is true, unfortunately, the sustainability of the Canadian grand prix is not yet assured."

He said negotiations with Bernie Ecclestone for a new 10-year contract are concluded. However, Dumontier still has to conclude the deal the various levels of federal, provincial and city governments who split up the costs of staging the race and upgrading the facilities.

He said he wants the deals to be secured before June's 2014 race in Montreal. "Following the grand prix in June, the rights of my business to the race will be non-existent," Dumontier warned. "We must act now."

Political instability seriously delayed the talks. During the past 18 months, there have been two provincial elections (and two governments) and the city of Montreal had four different mayors...
