The new five-year plan laid out last week by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles left many analysts and investors wondering whether the executive team was hallucinating for the second time in five years.

Kia Motors aims to sell 5,000 electric units of its boxy Soul subcompact a year worldwide. Kia expects the United States to be the Soul EV's biggest market. The Soul EV, which went on sale April 14 in South Korea, will hit U.S.

Toyota Racing Development, mostly known for racing parts and accessories for street-legal vehicles, will offer factory-installed TRD Pro off-road kits on the Tacoma, Tundra and 4Runner.

Despite earlier rumours from the paddock of the Spanish Grand Prix, American Gene Haas is not going to buy an existing Formula 1 team for his Haas Formula project.

British television Sky reported from Barcelona that Haas was planning a visit to the Enstone factory, where the financially struggling Lotus team is based. The report also suggested Haas was now thinking about operating from Europe, rather than from the United States.

Franz Tost, whose Toro Rosso team is based in Faenza, Italy, was one of many to advise Haas against building his team in America because all the F1 personnel is in the UK.

"Getting highly-skilled technical people to Italy is one of the main problems for Toro Rosso! These people prefer to stay in England, where the best infrastructure for F1 exists," Tost told F1's official website.

But a spokesman for Haas told British magazine Autosport there were no plans to buy an existing team such as Lotus or Caterham.

"Gene Haas has no plans to visit the Lotus factory," the spokesman said.

"Gene remains committed to building an American-based Formula 1 team and his plans have not changed."

Canadian IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe was diagnosed with a concussion, following an on-track incident, Saturday during the Grand Prix of Indianapolis.

This could compromise the 27-year-old's participation in the upcoming Indianapolis 500, as he is currently unable to drive and practice ahead of the famous event already started at the Brickyard.

Hinchcliffe's condition will be re-evaluated shortly by IndyCar medical director Michael Olinger to determine whether or not he will be fit enough to drive his No. 27 Andretti Autosport Dallara-Honda.

Former Andretti Autosport teammate EJ Viso will fill in if Hinchcliffe turns out to be unavailable.

"I want to thank all the fans for their messages of concern and support," said Hinchcliffe.

"I'm a little stiff and sore and I'd love to be back in the car (already), but I suppose I should probably let the doctors make that decision. Such a bummer for the (United Fiber and Data) car when things were really starting to come together."

Qualifying ahead of the Indianapolis 500 are held May 17-18. The race is May 25.

Jenson Button says he will quit formula one once he is no longer enjoying it.

Certainly, he makes no secret that McLaren's current situation is no fun.

"There is only one team that is happy," said the 2009 world champion, referring to dominant Mercedes.

But that doesn't mean the 34-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of the season, is not enjoying his job.

"It's still a pretty cool job," he told the Express newspaper in Barcelona.

"The worst part is the interviews trying to explain why it's not working," said Button, after qualifying eighth, more than two seconds off the pole time of his former teammate Lewis Hamilton.

Button said the other part of the job - working with engineers and driving - is still "enjoyable".

"It is just when you see the times that it hurts," he admitted.

"I'll stop when I'm not enjoying it anymore and it might be because I'm driving a car that's not quick enough in the future.

"Hopefully that won't be the case. Hopefully I can end on a high."

F1 aside, Button's other passion is fitness, and he regularly competes against some of the world's fittest athletes in ironman triathlons.

And he is always among those harking back to F1's louder, faster days, far from the spectacle of Barcelona 2014 where the leading GP2 cars would have comfortably qualified for the Spanish grand prix.

Button admits he has his eye on the new world rallycross series; a discipline loved by his recently departed father, John.

"I saw a quote from Jacques (Villeneuve) saying that in every other sport they are trying to make the cars slower but in rallycross they just throw everything at it, they are 600 horse power monsters," he said.

"I want to do something like that, taking a little motorhome or caravan with my mates and family and just hang out with other guys who are just having fun."

In the meantime, he is not yet ready to give up on F1.

"I really do get bored easily with everything in life but it has not happened yet with this sport, which is great," said Button.

"But after this I will probably go and do rallycross."

NASCAR's six-time champion Jimmie Johnson took some time on Mother's Day to acknowledge how important his mom has been throughout his career.

"My parents, together, were largely responsible for my career and my love for racing. My mom fortunately was on board; it wasn't just my dad's idea to take me to the race track," said the Hendrick Motorsports driver.

"Her willingness to let me ride and compete was much appreciated."

The 446-race veteran actually sees a lot of his mom in him.

"I think my personality and the way I treat others, even the way I compete, really reflects my mom.

"She's a respectful person and treats others how they treat you; a lot of those things from my mother's personality show through. I guess I'm more like my mom than my brothers are to a certain degree."

Johnson, also a 2-time dad, added he understands the importance of occasions like Mother's Day better these days.

"Mother's Day is a special day; especially now being a parent and understanding that a little bit better.

"It makes me reflect back and think about all the times I was traveling the country in a 1979 Ford Econoline van with a little 12-foot trailer behind it towing motorcycles."

"I can't imagine parents taking off weeks at a time to take me to Oklahoma to race dirt bikes or to Tennessee or to Las Vegas. All the sacrifices they made were pretty awesome."

History/Description of the used Ford Mustang: There's a new, sixth-generation Mustang arriving very soon -- meaning the fifth-generation model, available from 2005 to 2014 inclusively, is about to move fully into used-car territory.

Look for fifth-generation Mustangs with 6- or 8-cylinder power, starting from 210 ponies in earlier V6-powered units. Earlier V8 models in this generation, designated by the GT badge, housed a 4.6L mill good for 300 to 315 horsepower.

From 2011 on, a new V6 “base” engine turned out 305 horsepower, while a new 5.0L V8 made 412. From 2013 on, the 5.0L made 420 ponies.

Many used Mustangs will have been modified in some form. Typically, intake and exhaust modifications are safe and pose no cause for worry. Shoppers are advised to use caution when considering models with altered engine management electronics, upgraded engine internals, nitrous, forced induction or other serious add-ons.

Feel the shift quality under heavy throttle from first to second gear in a used Shelby, Boss or manually equipped Mustang. Many owners complain of a grinding sensation or “rejected” shift, especially in the higher-performance models, which could be caused by bad synchronizers in the transmission or excessive clutch wear. There's some inconclusive talk about a “bad batch” of transmissions in owners forums, though signs of a bad gearbox (grinding, biting, slamming or clanking) should be apparent on a test drive.

With eight laps to go on Saturday night under the lights, Jeff Gordon took the lead and held on to take the checkered flag at Kansas Speedway.

Gordon rolled off the grid 13th at the 1.5-mile speedway and cracked the top 10 by Lap 10. The driver of the No. 24 Axalta Chevrolet SS continued his forward march, passing a competitor at Lap 23 for sixth place.

When drivers began to come into pit road for green-flag pit stops, Gordon elected to stay out for an additional lap, giving him the lead. He continued to race in the top 10, moving into the top five by Lap 67.

A successful restart at Lap 75 allowed Gordon to crack the top three. Unfortunately, pit sequence and handling issues set Gordon back several positions and he was forced to restart 19th at Lap 119. Undaunted, Gordon maneuvered his No. 24 Chevy SS through traffic with success, cracking the top 10 again at Lap 175.

With 67 laps to go, he was running sixth and moved into the third position by Lap 213. Twenty laps later, Gordon moved into the runner-up position and continued to decrease the lead between him and the leader.

With eight laps to go, Gordon took the top position and took the checkered flag at Kansas Speedway.

With his third career win at Kansas, Gordon now is the all-time winner at the 1.5-mile speedway. More importantly, the points leader now can breathe a sigh of relief because the win virtually guarantees him a spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

"I'm going to be 43 this year, but this team makes me feel like I'm 25,” Gordon said after recording his 89th career NASCAR Sprint Cup victory and No. 220 for Hendrick Motorsports.

Formula one is not the loudest spectacle in Spain this weekend.

The feeder series GP2, still powered by naturally-aspirated V8 engines, is making more noise in Barcelona than the newly-quiet 'hybrid' grand prix machines.

Not only that, there are GP2 cars that are actually faster than their F1 counterparts this weekend.

Stephane Richelmi's name may be almost unknown beyond the GP2 paddock, but this weekend at the Circuit de Catalunya, the Monagasque's Mecachrome-powered DAMS 'outqualified' F1 stars Max Chilton, Jules Bianchi, Marcus Ericsson and Kamui Kobayashi.

Not only that, every car inside the top 13 in GP2 qualifying was faster than the Caterhams in Spain.

Force India's Sergio Perez said earlier that the louder, faster GP2 - with budgets eight times smaller than F1 teams - is "embarrassing".

"It's down to the regulations and there's nothing we can do," said Marussia's Graeme Lowdon.

"You couldn't criticise fans for asking that sort of question, and it's important people listen to it," he is quoted by Sporting Life.

Lewis Hamilton scored his fourth consecutive win this season after just five races, by beating his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg by just 0.636s at the finish of the Spanish Grand Prix.

The pair ran on different strategies, with Rosberg opting to keep his last set of option tires for the third and last stint of the race in order to be able to put pressure on Hamilton.

But Hamilton prevailed to finally take the lead in the drivers' championship by three points over Rosberg.

The Mercedes duo was dominant, only four other drivers managed to finish on the lead lap: Red Bull's Daniel Riccardo and Sebastian Vettel, Williams' Valtteri Bottas and Ferrari's Fernando Alonso.

"It's fantastic to get my first win here after eight attempts and it's really difficult to put that feeling into words right now," said the winner.

"In all my career, I've never before had a car or a performance gap like this. (...) There's still a long way to go this season, though, so we are staying humble, getting our heads down and working hard," added the 2008 world champion.

"But it's a great feeling to be leading the championship."

"My start was bad," admitted Rosberg.

"Once it was clear that I was in second place, we chose to go with the slower strategy using the prime tires in the middle stint to get a shot at Lewis at the end when I was on the options. It was very close but not quite close enough so naturally I'm disappointed.

The German still hopes to overturn the situation: "The next race is Monaco which is not only my home race but has some great memories from my victory there last year."

Red Bull has not denied rumours Ferrari made yet another move to poach Adrian Newey.

"We're used to these permanent poaching attempts from both sides," Dr Helmut Marko told the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag, referring not just to Ferrari.

"Mercedes and Ferrari don't just try to get our top employees; they are trying at every level (of the team)," said Marko.

In reality, Red Bull and Ferrari have a more immediate problem even than a tug-of-war over F1's most sought-after and highly paid engineer.

At the Circuit de Catalunya, a layout expected to play into the hands of Mercedes' rivals, Lewis Hamilton was a clear second faster than any other qualifying pretender.

Not only that, world champion Sebastian Vettel is having one of the worst grand prix weekends of his formerly glittering F1 career.

Despite having switched his RB10 chassis before the Barcelona weekend, the German has struggled simply to get his new Red Bull to run in Spain.

Vettel sat out most of Friday and also broke down in qualifying, so he joked: "I'd say I'm well rested for the race."

Gerhard Berger, once Vettel's boss at Toro Rosso, also thinks motivational issues may be creeping into the 26-year-old's struggles.

"Firstly he knows that he has no chance with this Renault engine," said the former McLaren and Ferrari driver.

"And certainly after always being at the front for four years and giving everything, in this situation you could find that your batteries are getting low," added Berger.

But Red Bull's Marko thinks the real problem is simply Mercedes' increasing dominance.

"We are one second from them. In the race we won't see Mercedes," he said.

"We are making small steps forward, but so are they. We need a quantum leap, otherwise for us the year is over," added Marko.

It is believed Red Bull wants to introduce substantial fuel and engine modifications in time for its home race in Austria next month, but this might require a relaxation of the engine 'freeze' rules.

"The rules are clear, and we stick to them," Mercedes F1 chairman Niki Lauda, apparently ruling out cooperation to help struggling Renault, insisted.

So for now, Marko admitted he is hoping Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg's lonely battle at the front comes to blows.

Lauda, meanwhile, is taking delight in Mercedes' current situation.

"I was really concerned that our lead would be smaller on an aerodynamic track like Barcelona," he said. "But we are even further ahead of Red Bull than before."

Mercedes has closed the door on Fernando Alonso.

Swirling rumours in the Barcelona paddock suggested the increasingly-frustrated Spaniard may have looked into whether there could be a place open at the dominant Brackley team for 2015.

That interest would be despite Alonso's ongoing Ferrari contract, and also the fact that Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton are similarly fastened to Mercedes beyond this year.

And Niki Lauda, Mercedes' outspoken chairman, promptly dismissed the speculation as "bullsh*t", according to the Austrian newspaper Salzburger Nachrichten.

Team boss Toto Wolff added: "We think long-term -- we are not interested in one night stands."

The door to silver pastures would seem to be firmly shut to Alonso.

Not only that, the Spaniard - earlier with the easy upper-hand on new Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen - has been soundly outpaced by the Finn at home in Spain this weekend.

Europa Press quoted Alonso as saying: "I'm more worried about the 1.8 second gap to Mercedes."

Raikkonen, too, was not celebrating his Saturday triumph.

"It gives me no satisfaction to be ahead of him (Alonso)," he said. "What I want is to be fighting for the top positions.

"Of course it's nicer to be in front of him than behind, but whether you're sixth or seventh doesn't make much difference," Raikkonen added.

Bulgaria, the EU's poorest member, is capitalizing on factors including its location, its low taxes and reduced labor costs to attract auto suppliers.

The Crimean crisis has thwarted sponsor talks between Russian companies and Sauber, the Swiss formula one team admitted.

Sauber's well-known financial troubles eased last year when a 'Russian rescue deal' was put together, featuring test driver Sergey Sirotkin.

But team boss Monisha Kaltenborn has admitted ahead of the Spanish grand prix that talks with Russian sponsors have now "come to a standstill" amid the threat of a Ukrainian war and US and European sanctions.

"A lot of talks which are very advanced have virtually come to standstill," she said.

"People are waiting and seeing what's going to happen and nobody really knows the entire impact it can have because the sanctions that have now been imposed are really biting some of them.

"We really hope that the situation can be clarified soon and all our deals can be sorted out," Kaltenborn said in Barcelona.

Also affected with regard to sponsor negotiations is Toro Rosso, whose new driver for the 2014 season is Daniil Kvyat, a talented young Russian.

"I just hope that it will end up in a positive way and we will go to Sochi because that's very, very important," team boss Franz Tost also said.

Tost is referring to the Russian grand prix, scheduled to take place for the first time this October.

A superbike round in Russia has already been cancelled, and the German touring car championship DTM is not ruling out axing its Moscow race.

But Marussia team boss John Booth said the current plan is for F1 to race in Sochi.

"As with Bahrain over the last couple of years, we'll follow our government guidelines on whether it's safe to travel or not," he said.

Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel will only start 15th, Sunday on the grid of the Spanish Grand Prix.

Vettel made it through to Q3, Saturday during qualifying, but could not set a time in the final session because of transmission issues. He was therefore placed 10th on the grid.

But his team then had to change the gearbox of his RB10, meaning the German was hit with a 5-place grid penalty.

"I left the garage for Q3 and lost drive in second gear," he said.

"I still had third gear and above so we thought we could do the lap with that, but by Turn 1 I had lost all the other gears, so we couldn't continue.

"I think I could have had a go for P3 today, but we didn't get that far. I'm of course quite disappointed."

Lotus has been left isolated after supplier Renault complained about unpaid engine bills.

Earlier in Barcelona, Renault chief Jean-Michel Jalinier warned that some of the French marque's F1 customers could soon have their turbo V6s turned off.

Jalinier did not name the delinquent teams, but Lotus' struggle to pay drivers and suppliers in 2013 was widely known.

Red Bull is Renault's de-facto 'works' team, so it is unlikely Jalinier was referring to the reigning world champions.

And the boss of the other Red Bull-owned team, Toro Rosso's Franz Tost, said on Friday: "As far as I'm aware, we have paid everything."

The only other Renault-powered teams in 2014 are Lotus and backmarker Caterham.

Caterham team boss Cyril Abiteboul said: "It's a confidential issue but I'm happy since I'm on time to say that we are settled with invoices with Renault Sport F1."

Lotus is yet to comment.
