F1: Renault Sport F1 fired up 2015 F1 turbo engine on dyno

New Renault Sport F1 director Cyril Abiteboul says that the French auto manufacturer is well advanced with the 2015 version of its V6 turbo engine.

Like those of Mercedes and Ferrari, the Renault Power Unit has had to be developed in line with the FIA's homologation rules.

“We are quite well advanced on the 2015 version of the V6 actually, there was already the first fire-up of next year's engine on the dyno last week,” Cyril Abiteboul said in Germany.

“It's going well; we need to improve performance however,” he added.

The French engineer confirmed that Renault will evaluate the split turbo idea pioneered by Mercedes this season.

Mercedes modified its turbos in other to have the air compressor and the turbine on separate ends of the engine.

It is said to help reduce turbo lag for improved efficiency, as well as assist with the car's aerodynamic packaging.

Remi Taffin, head of track operations at Renault Sport F1, explained it would be wrong of his engineers to not investigate it if the concept can bring a benefit.

"For sure we are looking at a different solution," he said when asked about going down the split turbo concept. "We will explore all the solutions.

"If I knew [the answer now] it would be wrong, because I should not know now what we are doing. It's being developed."

Quebec coroner wants to make drowsy driving illegal

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
In his recommendations following a February 2011 collision that killed five people, coroner Quoc-Bao Do is pressing the Quebec government to make drowsy driving a similar offence as drunk driving.

He also hopes the SAAQ will intensify awareness campaigns including road signs to remind people of the potentially tragic and deadly consequences of driving under fatigue.

In related news, a team of British researchers, together with the electronic specialists at Plessey, has developed a unique seat fabric that incorporates capacitive sensors and is able to monitor cardiac activity, which could alert drivers when they start to show signs of drowsiness.

Ultimately, this technological breakthrough could lead to the system having the power to slow the vehicle down if the driver fails to respond to the alert.

There's no doubt many accidents could be avoided as a result, but the best and safest thing to do will always be to pull over at the slightest sign of fatigue.

The all-new 2015 Cadillac Escalade will launch in the Middle East next month, but that didn't stop many customers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to order one. In fact, according to Liberty Automobiles Co., the exclusive dealer in the country, the Escalade has received a large amount of pre-orders over the past three months.

Such strong demand can no doubt be attributed to the Escalade's newly revamped interior, which incorporates extravagant luxury and the latest technology.

Volvo introduces two world firsts with all-new XC90

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
The all-new 2015 Volvo XC90, which is set to make its global debut in August, will feature a number of advanced safety technologies that will take the company a significant step closer to its vision that no one will be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car by 2020.

The list includes two world firsts.

Run-of road protection
In a run-off road scenario, the new Volvo XC90 detects what is happening and tightens the front seat belts to keep the occupants in position. The belts are firmly tightened as long as the vehicle is in motion.

Also, in order to help prevent spine injuries, energy-absorbing functionality between the seat and seat frame cushions the vertical forces that can arise when the car encounters a hard landing in the terrain. The system is capable of reducing the vertical occupant forces by up to one third.

Auto brake at intersections
The XC90 becomes the first vehicle in the world that can automatically brake if the driver turns in front of an oncoming car at an intersection. This helps avoid a collision or mitigate the consequences of a crash.

By the way, City Safety will become the umbrella name for all of Volvo's auto brake functions.

“City Safety is one of the most advanced standard crash prevention offers you can find in a modern car. It now covers vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians in front of the car, day and night,” explains Lotta Jakobsson, Senior Technical Specialist Safety at Volvo Cars Safety Centre. “We are now able to cover the whole span from dusk to dawn by a high-sensitive camera combined with advanced exposure control.”

A Tesla spokesman, Simon Sproule, announced that the electric car maker is suspending production of the Model S sedan for two weeks. The Fremont, CA plant will resume assembly on August 4th.

The break will allow Tesla to make $100 million worth of upgrades to not only ramp up Model S production by 25% (to 1,000 units per week), but also accommodate the upcoming Model X crossover.

“This represents the single biggest investment in the plant since we really started operations and enables us for higher volumes,” Sproule told Automotive News. “It gets us ready to build X and to do it on the same line as the S.”

Tesla president and CEO Elon Musk wants to sell 35,000 Model S sedans globally in 2014, which would represent a 56% increase from 2013.

In related news, Tesla is preparing to announce the location of its new battery factory, which will cost approximately $5 billion to build and employ as many as 6,500 people. Whether it's in Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, or Texas, Musk said the plant is needed to reduce the cost of lithium-ion cells by at least 30% — a crucial step in the company's plan to launch the Model 3 compact sedan in 2017.

F1: Red Bull-Renault partnership now in better health

From GMM

The relationship between Red Bull and Renault appears to be in better health.

Mere weeks ago, as the French supplier struggled with its new turbo V6 'power unit', talk of a split in the four-time title winning partnership was rife.

But that was before a raft of changes.

Former Caterham boss Cyril Abiteboul, for one, has returned to Renault, while president Jean-Michel Jalinier has left.

"There was some appetite at Renault to turn around what is happening on the track," Frenchman Abiteboul, now wearing a Renault shirt, said at Hockenheim.

And according to paddock rumours, Abiteboul is not the only fresh face at Renault.

Red Bull definitely sounds happier.

"The change in management is very positive," team boss Christian Horner said. "They are embracing the fact there is an issue and they are looking to make changes to make sure we close that gap to Mercedes.

"That will take time but the right attitude is there now and we should make progress. We had a very small step but we have to keep working," added Christian Horner.

Fernando Alonso has hailed the "amazing" job being done this year by Daniel Ricciardo.

At Silverstone, Spaniard Alonso's wheel-to-wheel duel with world champion Sebastian Vettel was littered with radio complaints about one another's driving.

But after Hockenheim, where the Ferrari driver had a similarly thrilling battle with Vettel's new teammate Ricciardo, Fernando Alonso had nothing but praise for the Australian.

Alonso hailed Ricciardo's driving, always with "great respect to the rules and to others".

"He is a surprise and doing amazing," the double world champion is quoted by the Spanish sports daily Marca.

"I believe he is 7:3 in the first ten races against Sebastian, which is something none of us expected. He is doing a great job, driving fantastically and, yes, fighting with intelligence," added Fernando Alonso.

F1600: Brandon Newey wins Race 2 in Toronto

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
From press release

Race 2 of the Formula 1600 Duals presented by Lubrico Warranty was just as thrilling as Race 1, but a reversal of fortune for the top two protagonists.

In Race 1 Tristan DeGrand came out on top after contact with Brandon Newey and grabbed the top spot on the podium, keeping his perfect win record intact. The two young lions came together again, at the same point on the racetrack but this time it was Newey who benefited and recorded his first win in just his second start in the series.

It was DeGrand who lead the field to the green based on his fast time in Race 1 with Chase Pelletier alongside. The entire field made it through the first lap without incident and the top 7 cars started to battle right away.

Pelletier would fall to 4th with Chastain making his way to the front quickly. Newey was chasing down DeGrand who had made one of his signature opening laps and had a 3 car lead.

On lap 4 Reid Arnold and Max Hanratty came together at the end of the long Lakeshore straight, the spot where most of the action was in both races, and damaged his right front suspension and slid into the runoff area unable to continue. Hanratty would continue but near the end of the race suffered a failure ending his day early as well.

The safety car was dispatched on lap 5 after a nasty hit by “B” class points and race leader Connor Wagland on the front straightaway, destroying the right side of his car. He would get out under his own power and was released in good health by medical staff shortly thereafter.

The restart allowed the field to be bunched back up, setting the stage for some drama.

DeGrand and Newey resumed the fight for the lead and stormed down the long straightaway, DeGrand on the outside and Newey on the inside with neither wanting to budge. The inevitable contact had DeGrand in the air and Newey with the lead. DeGrand fell almost to the back of the field, but would recover and storm back to the 11th spot by the end of the race.

Newey had it his way over the final laps and would win by 2 seconds. Behind him the action was furious. Returning Series Champion Jack Mitchell, Jr. was on form and brought his car home 2nd repeating his podium result from Race 1. Zacharie Robichon would grab the 3rd and final podium spot on the second to last lap in an unreal drive from the 14th starting position, some redemption for the talented driver's frustrating season.

Chase Pelletier was a big factor in the fight all day and brought his car home in 4th followed by Olivier Bedard and Sam Chastain.

Other notable drives were Michel Bonnet, who was as high as 2nd for several laps and fought hard for a 7th and Steve Bamford who raced hard from 15th to 9th.

It was a first time winner in the “B” Class for Amy Castell and her family run team. The cheers were loud and emotions were flowing as she took the top step over Steve Bodrug who had a great run in his first race with the series this season. The “B' Class IronMan, Mike Lee, grabbed yet another trophy with his solid 3rd place finish.

Next up for the F1600 Super Series is the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres, the last date on the calendar August 7-10. The Toyo Tires F1600 Championship will resume August 22-24 at Calabogie Motorsports Park.

2015 Hyundai Sonata First Impressions

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
The Korean automakers are no longer cranking out low priced, low quality disposable commuter appliances. After a generation of Fluidic Sculpture driven design, Hyundai is now firmly on the map and no longer an “also ran” brand.

This year, Hyundai is rolling out their latest iteration of what they call “Fluidic Sculpture” design, even coining it “Fluidic Sculpture 2.0” for the millennial set. The first model to receive this new design language - the Genesis Sedan - has been on lots for a couple of months. But, if any model needed some new sheet metal, it was the Sonata. And now the midsize sedan finally gets a fresh face.

What is the Hyundai Sonata?
First sold in Canada as the Stellar, the Hyundai Sonata is now entering its seventh generation since its introduction to Canada in 1985.

Sometimes the best way to get the spotlight is to be polarizing, and that's what Hyundai did in 2009. The sixth generation Sonata was a massive leap in design, meant to grab the attention of consumers and convert that attention into sales. But, you either loved it or hated it; there was absolutely no middle ground.

Now, as 2015 Hyundai Sonatas hit dealer lots, potential customers will be greeted by a more aggressive front fascia, a trapezoidal front grille, and an overall design that's a fair bit more mainstream than the outgoing model. Some may even call the new Sonata handsome, a word that never would have been used to describe its predecessor.

2015 Hyundai Sonata Price and Specs
Just like the sixth-generation model, the new 2015 Sonata is available with two different four-cylinder engines displacing 2.4 and 2.0 litres, the latter being turbocharged. However, these are not carryover engines. They have both been retuned for more drivability, even sacrificing peak horsepower and torque to get there (this is not a bad thing).

The base engine - a new 2.4-litre Theta II mill - produces 185 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque, a decrease of 5 hp and 1 lb-ft peak to peak. But, the horsepower and torque that does exist is more accessible. It's the same story for the 2.0-litre turbocharged Theta II four pot. The new 2.0T Sport engine develops 245 hp and 260 lb-ft while a 2014 model pumps out 274 hp and 269 lb-ft.

Yet, if you analyze the torque curves of these engines, it all starts to make sense, especially with the 2.0T. Torque kicks in sooner, allowing for more oomph down low and better fuel economy.

Both engines are mated exclusively to a six-speed automatic with manual mode. Sport models are equipped with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters as well.

Prices range from $23,999 for the base GL trim Sonata with a 2.4-litre engine all the way up to $34,799 for the Sport 2.0T Ultimate.

Driving the 2015 Hyundai Sonata
Before I can write about anything else, I need to mention my gripes with the 2014 Hyundai Sonata.

When Hyundai set out to engineer the last generation Sonata, they must have laid off all their suspension engineers, as the midsizer provided no damping at all. Every road imperfection felt like it took the car by surprise.

I'm happy to report the new Sonata's suspension is much, much better. Not as firm as the Fusion but not soft like a few others. Hyundai has almost nailed it this time.

Also, despite the lower peak output numbers, the engines truly are better to deal with, even if the direct injection is still incredibly ticky. However, thanks to a new, quieter interior, you at least won't hear the tick-tick-tick of the injectors constantly.

Selectable steering modes are no longer. Instead, three drive modes - controlling engine response, shift mapping, and steering - can be selected between Eco, Normal, and Sport. Yet, the steering part feels amiss. Before, you could really notice a difference between the selectable steering modes. Now you wonder if the drive modes are changing anything at all.

To cap it all off, braking is predictable - not bad, not amazing, and totally what you would expect for the class.

Inside and Out of the 2015 Hyundai Sonata
It's the design of the seventh generation Sonata that is really worth talking about. Instead of attempting to evolve a design that had no chance of aging well, the design team at Hyundai started from scratch.

That decision was a smart one.

The 2015 Sonata features a much more grown up, conservative, and masculine look. Even those who work at Hyundai have said the 2009-2014 models were a bit too curvaceous for many consumers, including themselves.

Large headlights, sweeping more toward the side than they do up and back, are reminiscent of the new Genesis Sedan. Even the new trapezoidal grille gets some inspiration from the full-size rear-wheel drive executive car. Yet, Hyundai hasn't figured out how to hide those ugly, plastic radar cruise control blocks that appear in the grilles of upper trim models (Mercedes-Benz hides them behind their massive tri-star emblem). Below the new headlights and grille are new horizontal fog lights featuring LEDs, giving the front of the Sonata an upscale look.

Hyundai has continued on with one design feature from the old model - the beltline trim goes all the way to the headlight instead of stopping at the exterior mirrors. For the seventh generation, its execution is much better, at least in my eyes. The same piece of chrome trim outlines all the side glass.

Around back, new taillights are given the LED treatment, with oval-ish shapes reminding me of the new Chrysler 200. Below the rear bumper are either single, dual, or double dual exhausts, depending on trim and engine choice.

Sitting inside the new Sonata is much better than the outgoing model, with improved seating front and rear, along with a more coherent console and dash design. Even the faux wood trim is a nice touch. Though some of the flat black plastics are a bit too flat and seem slightly out of place. Thankfully, placement is impeccable, and Hyundai hasn't gone down the “no buttons, all touchscreen” rabbit hole.

Speaking of that touchscreen, Hyundai really does have a nice looking navigation and music screens. But, with other automakers now catching up in this segment, I really hope Hyundai has something up their sleeve for a mid-cycle refresh - they're going to need it.

Overall, the Sonata is definitely a tier 1 contender now in the midsize sedan segment. If you are looking at buying a Camry, Accord, Fusion, or Mazda6, you might want to add the Sonata to your shortlist as well.

Comparing the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta GLI
The Sonata enters its seventh generation in one of the most crowded segments in the industry, competing for driveway space with the Chevrolet Malibu, Chrysler 200, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord Sedan, Kia Optima, Mazda6, Nissan Altima, Subaru Legacy, Toyota Camry, and Volkswagen Passat.
