F1: Romain Grosjean’s seat at Lotus in danger

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
From GMM

Romain Grosjean could be left out in the cold as Lotus looks to change gear for 2015.

It is now an open secret that the Enstone based team intends to switch from Renault to Mercedes customer power at the end of the season.

"I can't confirm it yet," Mercedes' Toto Wolff smiled to British television Sky on Saturday.

Less clear is the reason for the move. Certainly, Lotus - fourth overall in both 2012 and 2013 - has struggled notably for reliability with Renault's underpowered turbo V6.

But the team's links to the French marque are historically solid, as Lotus was once called Renault -- the works squad.

Since then, the Enstone team has retained the solid backing of Total, the French multinational that is now working hand-in-hand with Renault to improve the fuel that powers Red Bull's world championship hopes.

Also strongly linked to Total is Frenchman Grosjean.

But the 28-year-old's career was also tied closely to another Frenchman, Eric Boullier, who doubled as his manager.

Today, Boullier is the team boss at a rival team, McLaren.

So the final straw for Grosjean could be Lotus' Renault split. The arrival of Mercedes power would no doubt mean the end of the team's association with key Grosjean backer Total.

"Things are open," Grosjean agreed at Silverstone, "but it's not because Eric is there (McLaren) that things are that simple."

What is clear is that if the Lotus-Mercedes deal is formalised as expected in the next few days, Renault is unlikely to find a replacement customer.

"There will be less revenue, this is true," Renault's Remi Taffin admitted, "but not at the level that would put us in difficulty.

"Indeed, perhaps concentrating on fewer teams will help Red Bull to achieve their goals," he is quoted by Italy's Autosprint.

Therein lies the probable truth, as it seems that the recently highly-critical premier team Red Bull has applied pressure on Renault to narrow its focus.

Dr Helmut Marko revealed to F1's official website that Renault will only supply "one version" of its 2015 specification power unit to users Red Bull, Toro Rosso and Caterham.

"Not like this season," he said, "where Lotus had a different version to us, which tied up too many resources at Renault and distracted from the development."

According to paddock rumours, another change at Lotus could be the loss of multinational backer Unilever - and the sponsors Clear and Rexona - to McLaren.

It could help the Woking based team to woo the increasingly frustrated Fernando Alonso from Ferrari.

The Spaniard is famed for his 'never give up' attitude, but after qualifying at the back of the grid at Silverstone, Alonso admitted the time has now come.

"Yes. Anyone apart from Rosberg and Hamilton saying they can be world champion this year is lying," he is quoted by Speed Week. "And I don't like to lie."

And he is also quoted by Spain's AS: "I'm not saying that we can't do anything this season, but to be eighth, ninth, twelfth or nineteenth is not going to change our lives."

Rallycross: Albatec and Jacques Villeneuve all out to secure semi final place in Sweden

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
From press release

Albatec Racing will pull out all the stops in Sunday's final two qualifying heats in World RX Of Sweden as it bids to take a semi final position with former F1 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve.

Jacques faces an uphill struggle after broken suspension sustained in a first lap incident caused a right front puncture to his two-litre, 16v Peugeot 208 in heat two, however the Indy 500 winner has vowed to give it everything he's got to net a fast overall heat win tomorrow in his attempt to qualify for round five of the FIA World Rallycross Championship at Höljes.

A solid run in the opening four-lap heat put the 1995 Indycar World Series Champion 15th fastest of the 38 runners and a great start to the second saw the French-Canadian challenging for the lead going into turn one.

Running second, heavy contact with Andreas Bakkerud while looking to pass the Norwegian broke the Peugeot's suspension, however it was a few corners later that the compression strut broke, piercing the tire, and leaving Jacques to limp home in fifth.

The incident was particularly unfortunate as the heat, race six of eight, was the second fastest overall with heat winner Sebastian Ericksson's race time less than three seconds off the fastest time.

Had Jacques escaped damage in the early stages, his position would doubtless have elevated him up the order, and put the Lochfoot team in a stronger position ahead of tomorrow's two final qualifiers.

"It's going to be very tough to qualify (today) after (yesterday's) results however as always I'll give it my best shot," said Villeneuve.

"I'm not sure we're quick enough to win a heat outright, however if we can have two quick, and more importantly clean races then we stand half a chance."

Sunday's track action begins with an hour-long warm-up at 08.45, followed by two further heats, which get underway from 10.00 and 12.30. The semi finals and finals for support races are due to start at approximately 15.30. Additional event information is available at www.rallycrossrx.com

F1: Marco Mattiacci orders lots of changes within Ferrari team

From GMM

Ferrari has floored the throttle in its push to emerge from its 2014 slump.

Eric Boullier, also pushing to end fellow grandee McLaren's struggle, predicted a long recovery for the fabled Maranello outfit.

"It will take them a lot of time to get back on top. Why? I'll keep that to myself," the Frenchman is quoted by Italiaracing.

Undoubtedly, Ferrari is indeed making sweeping and significant changes.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that, in the last few days, ten new engineers started work at Maranello, including three engine experts from dominant Mercedes.

The report also claims Ferrari has successfully wooed three aerodynamicists from reigning quadruple world champion Red Bull, as well as a simulation expert.

"I have ordered a strong discontinuity on the technical side," team boss Marco Mattiacci is quoted as saying.

And the head of Ferrari's current engine chief, Luca Marmorini, is expected to roll.

"I do not name names," Mattiacci insisted, "but we are redesigning our organisation."

F1: McLaren loses long-time sponsor Hugo Boss to Mercedes

From GMM

Eric Boullier has played down McLaren's sponsorship situation.

Already without a title sponsor in the wake of Vodafone's exit, the British team is in a two-year competitive slump and it now emerges that a long-time backer is departing.

Hugo Boss, a German fashion house that has sponsored McLaren for decades, is switching its sponsorship to Mercedes.

But Boullier, McLaren team boss, denied the Woking based squad is facing a financial problem.

"No, we have thirty two sponsors," he is quoted by Italiaracing, "even though you don't see them all on the team shirts.

"And I can guarantee that the support from Honda will be considerable," added the Frenchman, referring to the looming works engine deal that will end McLaren's 20-year association with Mercedes-Benz.

"If you want to conquer this world you need to be a high level team, and we are," Boullier insisted. "You also need a good engine and the support of a manufacturer.

"We will have all of this next year."

He said the problems with the 2014 chassis, the MP4-29, are being addressed.

"We lack aerodynamic downforce but I knew this would happen," said the former Lotus chief. "I noticed it immediately when I arrived, when they showed me the features of the car in the various departments."

But Boullier said he is confident McLaren will also have a top driver lineup next year, refusing even to rule out a driver of Fernando Alonso's calibre signing up.

"Yes, why not?" he said. "We are an attractive team.

"The option with Button and Magnussen is in our favour, but my job is to speak with other drivers to understand their situation. My goal is to have the best possible pair of drivers."

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. triggered a 16-car crash on lap 20 of 160 at the Coke Zero 400 in Daytona.

The 26-year-old from Mississippi lost control of his car coming out of turn 4 and took Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart with him in his fall, blocking the track for the rest of the field near the start-finish line.

Other drivers involved were Kevin Harvick, Danica Patrick, Marcos Ambrose, Matt Kenseth, Trevor Bayne, Kyle Larson, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Denny Hamlin, Brad Keselowski, AJ Allmendinger, Michael Waltrip, Johnson and Carl Edwards.

The incident slowed the race down even more, after the event had already been postponed from Saturday night to Sunday morning.

F1: Nico Rosberg failure in British GP blows championship wide open (+results)

From GMM

Lewis Hamilton is right back in the game, as his championship deficit shrinks from 29 points to just 4 with a popular home win at Silverstone.

Mercedes team chairman Niki Lauda, however, was furious that many might not have bothered to wait hours for the chequered flag, following a lengthy delay.

(Photo: WRi2)

It took an hour for circuit workers to replace damaged armco barriers after an early crash involving Kimi Raikkonen, who limped from his destroyed Ferrari into the medical car.

"Ridiculous," said Lauda. "The chances of it happening again are zero.

"They take care of every little detail and a lot of people will switch the television off."

Raikkonen was not seriously injured, having later been spotted comfortably walking to a golden Ferrari road car as he departed the British grand prix venue.

"He seems ok," the Maranello team confirmed, with teams sources reporting nothing more than a bruised ankle for the Finn.

More than just ok, however, is Hamilton, whose mood on Saturday had dropped to an all-time low when he decided to abandon the potential pole lap.

But he was bearing down on Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg during the race before sweeping into the lead when the sister silver car ground to a halt with a gearbox problem.

"I don't want to see a teammate fail," happy Hamilton said after delivering a home win for the Silverstone crowd, "but I really needed this result."

Rosberg, though, said the Brackley based team has work to do.

"Our car is totally dominant," he told German television RTL, "but reliability is also very important."

But team boss Toto Wolff said Hamilton cannot be begrudged a full celebration, with the 2008 world champion having earlier been the victim of technical trouble.

"Today was Lewis' day," he said, "and it blows the championship wide open.

"We will let them race all season no matter what."

F1: Niki Lauda denies Ferrari poaching top engineers

Niki Lauda has promptly played down suggestions dominant Mercedes is bleeding engineers to Ferrari.

Italy's La Gazzetta dello Sport reported that a couple of handsful of engineers from rival teams have started work at Maranello, including a trio who previously worked on Mercedes' currently-dominant turbo V6 power unit.

But Mercedes team chairman Lauda insisted at Silverstone: "We have all the important engineers firmly under contract.

"They are staying," the great Austrian reiterated. "We have long term contracts with our major engineers."

Germany's Auto Motor und Sport said one of them is Mercedes' most important engine man, Andy Cowell, who is under contract for the next five years at least.

Nico Rosberg mastered tricky conditions to claim his fourth pole position of the season, Saturday ahead of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

"That was one of the trickiest qualifying sessions I can remember," said Mercedes' team principal Paddy Lowe. "We had to deal with very mixed conditions throughout, swapping between intermediate and option tyres, and these are the days when it's so easy to get things wrong as a team."

Rosberg's performance secured Mercedes' eighth pole in nine grands prix this season.

"Wow, what a qualifying. It was so tricky out there this afternoon with the rain and the conditions changing so quickly. It's very satisfying to get everything right in these conditions and be able to come out on top," said the German.

"I remembered that we were losing three or four seconds in the last corners when it was very wet so there was an opportunity to make a real improvement and that I should keep going.

Adrian Newey could design Infiniti supercar

From GMM

One of Adrian Newey's first non-F1 technical projects could be an Infiniti supercar.

The sport's highest paid and most highly rated engineer is stepping into a mere 'advisory' role for Red Bull, having admitted his frustration with ever-tightening technical regulations.

Newey said at Silverstone that the trend of the rules is in the direction of a single-make series, like a glorified GP2, and "We're already, in my opinion, in grave danger of getting close to that".

So the 55-year-old's main office next year will not be in Red Bull's F1 factory, but in the new 'Advanced Technologies Centre', where according to speculation he could begin work on an America's Cup yacht design.

And what about a supercar branded as Infiniti, Nissan's luxury division and the reigning world champion team's title sponsor?

"Adrian it itching to do something new," Andy Palmer, Nissan's British executive vice president, told topgear.com.

Ecclestone admits he could buy back F1

Bernie Ecclestone has admitted he might buy back formula one.

The Silverstone weekend kicked off amid rumours major shareholder CVC could be considering selling its stake.

The reported front-runners are multiple consortiums, separately involving grandee teams Red Bull, Ferrari and even Lotus' Gerard Lopez.

But also in the running now is F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone, who is reportedly at risk of being ousted by CVC over a corruption scandal for which he is currently on trial in Germany.

The Daily Express newspaper, however, claims 83-year-old billionaire Ecclestone could simply buy back the sport he so successfully developed.

"I have spoken to (CVC's) Donald Mackenzie and I am looking at it," the diminutive Briton confirmed.

"Our company has been a very good investment for CVC and it would be a very good investment for me or anyone who owned it."

F1: Hay fever spoils Lewis Hamilton momentum

From GMM

More technical trouble is not the only thing on Lewis Hamilton's mind at Silverstone.

The 2008 world champion went into his home grand prix weekend determined to start clawing back some of the 29-point deficit to his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg.

"Yes," he sniffed to reporters, "the tables turned in Monaco and broke my momentum and he has had it for a few races. Now it is time to do the same thing the other way round."

But that was before he broke down with an oil leak during Friday practice, even though he still topped the times.

"It happens," said Hamilton, "but I don't know why it happens to my car so much. I really needed that (session). I can't keep stopping."

Also being addressed by Mercedes team management at Silverstone was the ever-growing divide between the 'Hamilton camp' and the 'Rosberg camp' as their title fight intensifies.

Lewis Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton (Photo: WRi2)

"We had a bit of a situation in one of the last races when we asked (the drivers) for feedback on the car," boss Toto Wolff is quoted by the Mirror.

"They said 'Nope'. Anything you want to say? Nope. And when the meeting was over they plunged into detailed discussions with their engineers," he added.

Wolff said the matter has been resolved.

But Hamilton's troubles do not even end there. During his media briefing at Silverstone, a team aide handed him a hay fever pill, as he is suffering with the pollen in the air around rural Northamptonshire.

That alone, however, will not hold back his silver car. "If everything runs normally, Mercedes can do a one-two on every circuit," Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel said at Silverstone.

F1: Lotus to test 18-inch Pirelli tire

Pirelli will test a much lower-profile tire during next week's post-British grand prix test at Silverstone.

F1's official tire supplier, whose public profile has been much lower in 2014 as drivers label its new approach as "conservative", said the 18-inch tire will "showcase the way that formula one could look in the near future".

The Lotus team will be running the novel tire design.

"Larger wheel and tire sizes reflect modern market trends," Pirelli said in a statement.

The current F1 tires have a 13-inch profile, unlike rival categories like GT, Le Mans and Formula E.
