F1: Max Verstappen drives a Toro Rosso at Adria (+photos)

Dutch teenager Max Verstappen is back behind the wheel of a Toro Rosso Formula 1 car in order to get his super licence.

We remember that Verstappen recently damaged the Toro Rosso as he hit the barriers when performing donuts on the streets of Rotterdam.

The 16-year-old is in action today at Adria International Raceway, driving a two-year old Ferrari-powered Toro Rosso F1 car.

The objective for Verstappen is to cover 300km in testing to be awarded his super licence.

Earlier, it was announced that Max could make his debut in this year's Toro Rosso ahead of the US, Brazilian and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix at the tail end of the season.

From the press release
The 16-year-old Dutchman, who will race alongside Daniil Kvyat next year for Scuderia Toro Rosso drove the 2012 STR7 car at the Adria International Raceway, about two hour's drive away from our Faenza factory.

The track was still damp in the morning after overnight rain and Verstappen's first few runs were done on Intermediate tyres, but conditions improved enough for him to switch to slicks later in the day.

He did a mix of short and long runs as well as trying his hand at other features of a race weekend, such as pit stops and start launches. By the end of the day he had completed 148 trouble free laps of the 2.702 kilometre long track.

Max Verstappen: “I was looking forward to my first drive in a Formula 1 car on a proper race track and I really enjoyed it. It was a good opportunity to work with Xevi, who will be my race engineer next year, as well as having a chance to get used to all the buttons on the steering wheel. I think it went well and I can't wait to get back into a Formula 1 car as soon as possible.”

Steve Nielsen (Sporting Director): “In his first real test in a Formula 1 car, Max did a very competent job, giving the impression he has been driving a Formula 1 car for quite a while, not like someone on their first day behind the wheel. He made no mistakes all day, seemed confident and once he was told something he remembered it. In general, he coped very well with this first test.”

Xevi Pujolar (Race Engineer): “Max started his run on Intermediates and got up to speed, making no mistakes. We worked through various procedures that make up a race weekend. He was very focused and precise and learned quickly, without having to ask many questions. Once we were able to fit slicks, he got used to the car in the dry and built up his speed, while we tried various fuel levels, replicating both qualifying and race trim, doing a mix of short and long runs. For a first day, it was very impressive.”

F1: Sauber sale to billionaire Lawrence Stroll now in doubt

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
From GMM

Sauber's potential sale to a Canadian billionaire could have collapsed.

It has been strongly rumoured in past days that Lawrence Stroll, a fashion mogul with close links to Ferrari, could buy the financially struggling Swiss team.

Spain's El Mundo Deportivo claims Stroll, whose son Lance is a Ferrari 'academy' driver, has also tried to put together a consortium to buy F1's commercial rights.

"But mostly it was said in the Monza paddock that he is very close to buying Sauber," said the report. "If the deal is not done yet it is because it is said Peter Sauber is asking for too much money."

Particularly sceptical is the closely Sauber-linked F1 correspondent Roger Benoit, who writes in Blick newspaper that "All previous attempts to buy Sauber have failed for various reasons".

But Canada's French-language La Presse thinks Stroll could be the real deal.

A man who knows him well is former Montreal F1 chief Normand Legault, who like Stroll is closely aligned with the race circuit scene in Canada -- Stroll owns the Mont Tremblant track.

"He has been very close to Ferrari for years," Legault told La Presse. "He knows motor sport, the F1 paddock and Bernie Ecclestone very well."

Legault said the reports linking Sauber with Stroll "could be very credible".

But Roberto Chinchero, the correspondent for Italy's Autosprint, could be the bearer of bad news about the health of the Stroll bid.

"It seemed like the negotiations were coming to a successful conclusion," he said, "but instead everything collapsed on the eve of the Italian grand prix."

F1: Veteran Pat Symonds impressed by Finland’s Valtteri Bottas

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Veteran British engineer Pat Symonds has worked alongside several champions-in-the-making such as Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso during his career.

Symonds, today's Williams' technical director fully agrees that Valtteri Bottas is a world champion of the future.

"I am completely convinced that he is a future world champion," the Briton told Finland's Turun Sanomat, "and I want to make sure he does it with us at Williams.

"I have been with two young guys, Fernando (Alonso) and Valtteri, as they started their careers and then developed. And I see a lot of similarities.

"But I think Valtteri as a total package has the potential to be even better than Fernando," Pat Symonds added.

Twenty-five-year-old Bottas' potential was reportedly spotted elsewhere in pit lane this year, including at McLaren who have been looking to freshen its driver line-up.

But Valtteri Bottas insists staying at "Williams was definitely always the priority".

"We have improved so much since last year and now it seems that the direction is correct.

"I believe we will be even better next season and that this is the best place for me at the moment," the 2011 GP3 series' champion said.
