Jaguar F-Type: Exotic Exhaust Notes Explained

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
For its blending of all things classy, powerful, and fast the Jaguar F-Type is leaving test-drivers, owners, and auto writers around the globe absolutely smitten.

Then, there's the exhaust note, which is bonkers. The F-Type's V8 engine sounds like automatic gunfire blended with fireworks. The V6 is a smoother, more exotic sound, though equally as saliva-inducing for anyone who likes driving and has ears.

If there's one company that gets, like really gets, performance-car exhaust notes it's gotta be Jaguar. So, I looked up Dr. Garry Dunne, JLR's Senior Technical Specialist of Vehicle NVH and Sound Quality, for a closer look at what goes into making the F-Type output such an amazing symphony of combustion.

JP: How important is the exhaust noise of a car like the F-Type? Do owners ask for or demand a car that's totally gnarly sounding or is this something inherent of all Jaguar models?

GD: Central to the Jaguar Sound Quality DNA is the delivery of a duality -- both an exhilarating and an effortless driving experience. The cars purr at idle. They have an effortless and refined cruising character, with an underlying promise of performance. This promise is delivered through a powerful and purposeful Sound Quality character that builds to a rewarding, crisp crescendo under performance driving.

We often use the catchphrase, "effortless transition from a powerful growl to and edgy snarl" to capture the essence of the Jaguar Powertrain Sound quality. This applies to all Jaguar models.

JP: Is there a regulatory sound limit on how loud a car's exhaust can be? Does it vary between countries? Was much bribing required to be able to exceed that limit with the F-Type?

GD: Jaguar is very proud of the exhaust sound and driving experience that we created on the F-Type. This was developed to meet all of the stringent compliance regulations required by an OEM.

The pass-by-noise level is a well-established compliance regulation that all new cars must meet. There are minor variations between EU/ROW and US regulations, but they essentially require similar noise control limits. The F-Type has been designed to meet the most stringent of all the global regulations. The F-Type does not have different exhaust tunes for different markets -- it is a global car. All JLR products comply with all regulatory sound limits.

JP: How much control do engineers have over the way the car sounds? Is a target sound set and achieved or is the sound just a by-product of other things?

GD: The delivery of the exhaust sound quality on the F-Type is far from being a by-product of other things. We spend considerable amounts of time and engineering resources in the development and tuning of the vehicle hardware to deliver our desired sound.

The initial exhaust system development work was carried out using a combination of expertise and computer aided engineering (CAE), and simulation techniques. Based upon years of experience, the Jaguar team developed a concept for the exhaust system that we knew would deliver the required sound quality character outlined above.

Ultimately, however, the Sound Quality can only be signed off by driving the real car. Therefore the final stage in the acoustic development of the F-Type was a series of iterative tuning loops of the exhaust and intake system hardware on prototype vehicles. Over 50 different exhaust systems with both significant and minor changes were evaluated before the final specification delivering the acoustic performance was signed-off.

JP: So, Jaguar pays someone, with actual money, to listen to prototype models and fine-tune the exhaust sound of cars like the F-Type?

GD: Yes, a whole team of us -- and as there is a lot to do, there will always be a job available.

JP: Can the exhaust noise be manipulated? Is it just the style of muffler? The intake system? The exhaust manifold? What, physically, gives the F-Type its signature noise?

GD: Very much so. All of the items that you mention have a part to play in the tuning of the sound-quality character. Clearly, some items such as the engine configuration (V6 or V8, crank design, etc.) are givens and we need to work around these basic "ingredients." Other items such as manifold design configuration (i.e., equal length, log-type, etc.) also need to be reconciled with other attributes, such as emissions. Thereafter, the intake and exhaust system layout and internals have a major part to play in adding the "spice" to the sound-quality character.

There is a significant amount of acoustic tuning that can be done on these commodities, similar to playing tunes on woodwind or brass instruments to deliver the desired "note." Items include bank-to-bank mixing, tuned resonators, expansion volumes, and perforation patterns.

JP:
What causes that delightful pitter-patter drum-beat from the tailpipes when you lift the throttle at higher RPMs?

GD: This is delivered through a combination of the exhaust internal tuning, and fueling calibration.

F1: Three teams in battle for 2015 survival

From GMM

The fate of three formula one teams continues to hang in the balance.

The health of the sport's most financially struggling outfits has been under an intense spotlight since it emerged the richest teams might be asked to plug gaps on the 2015 grid by running three-car operations.

Arguably the most endangered team is Caterham, whose founder Tony Fernandes suddenly pulled the plug this year, almost leading to a total collapse before July's British grand prix.

The green-coloured team is now owned by a mysterious consortium of Swiss-based Dubai investors, amid continuing rumours of serious financial problems.

But Manfredi Ravetto, the new boss, insists Caterham has money to spend.

"We are currently testing our 2015 car in Cologne, at Toyota's wind tunnel," he told F1's official website. "Obviously you cannot run your car in Cologne just because of our extremely nice attitude!

"And if we do this (pay Toyota) it means that we are fully committed to being here next year," he added.

Another obviously embattled team is Caterham's fellow backmarker Marussia, but sporting boss Graeme Lowdon insists the team can also afford to keep racing.

"You don't want to give the wrong impression by glibly saying 'yes, we're fine' because it's always a challenge operating businesses in this environment," he told Sporting Life.

"(But) we have an obligation to trade correctly, and if you don't reasonably believe you can do that, you have to stop," Lowdon added.

"If we didn't think we could be here, then we wouldn't be here."

And the third current team clearly battling merely for survival is Sauber, the 21-year-old Swiss outfit whose fortunes began to fade some years ago when owner BMW pulled out.

Founder Peter Sauber and co-owner Monisha Kaltenborn are putting a brave face on the situation, but a man also with knowledge of the situation paints a more uncertain picture.

One of the men central to the oft-reported 'Russian rescue deal' is Oleg Sirotkin, whose son Sergey Sirotkin was initially believed to be a shoo-in for a race seat.

Now, the young Sirotkin's prospects are not so clear.

"In my opinion it is 50-50," Oleg Sirotkin told the Russian website f1news.ru.

"There have been a lot of problems, one of which is the unstable situation of the teams. There is no certainty they will even be at the start next season.

"For example," he revealed, "we are working closely with Sauber, but they seem to have a problem."

Former rally champion Petter Solberg claimed the drivers' title in the inaugural World Rallycross Championship (World RX), this week-end in Franciacorta.

Swede Timmy Hanssen won the race, but Solberg finished third to take the title with two rounds to go.

Solberg, who made a name for himself in rallying, actually began his career in rallycross, or "bilcross" - a Norwegian variant of the sport. He entered his first event at the age of 18 and went on to become national champion only a few years later.

For several years, he then drove for Subaru in the WRC, where he clinched the world title in 2003.

After the Japanese manufacturer pulled out of the sport, Solberg cling on as a privateer, running his own Citroën rally cars. In 2012, he became a factory driver again with Ford, but was dropped after a disappointing season.

Only then, in 2013, did he get back to rallycross, in the European championship, and eventually in the World championship when the series was created a year later.

Rally: Michelin mixes things up with new range of asphalt tires

By bringing out a new range of asphalt tires ahead of the Rallye de France-Alsace, Michelin might have changed the hierarchy in the World Rally Championship (WRC).

The French tire manufacturer has upgraded its Pilot Sport rubber in both soft and hard compounds for the Strasbourg-based event that runs from 3-5 October.

The new S4 (soft) tire, suitable for use in cool and damp conditions, and the new H4 (hard) ideal for warmer and drier weather, feature a new tread pattern and a revised construction that reduces the weight of each tire by 0.5kg.

All of the leading factory teams have been testing Michelin's new rubber in the build up to the penultimate asphalt rally of the season and their findings are set to force them into making some crucial set-up changes in readiness for the event, described as a cross between the stages that are typically found in Spain and Germany.

Didier Clément, Citröen's Chief Operations Engineer, said: "We need the car to be very balanced in terms of downforce and testing enabled us to work on this particular aspect with the new Michelin range of tire which have been completely redesigned to include a fairly deep, third longitudinal line.

"Our two drivers have adapted well to the new tire and they had the same feeling and agreed on the same set-up in preparation for this rally," added Clément.

Red Bull's Carlos Sainz Junior made a big step towards the Formula Renault 3.5 title, this week-end at the Paul Ricard circuit.

The young Spaniard recorded his seventh win of the season to extend his lead over Robert Merhi to 44 points with one race to go.

Sainz, who was expected to jump to F1 next year before Max Verstappen was signed by Toro Rosso, absolutely dominated the race right from the start.

"It was a perfect race," admitted the son of former WRC champion Carlos Sainz.

"After the tricky qualifying session because of the red flag, I knew I had to get a good start and that was the case even though Pierre also got off the line well. The first corner was tricky as well, but I somehow managed to stay in front.

"The first stint was very fast. The team made the right decision at the right moment bringing me in late, although I did worry about a safety car. They did a great job and I just had to bring it home."

Mattias Ekström scored the first victory for Audi in the 2014 season, this week-end in Zandvoort.

With his Audi RS 5 DTM, he ended up ahead of already-crowned DTM champion Marco Wittmann. At the finish, the Swede had an advantage of 7.4 seconds. BMW's Martin Tomczyk completed the podium.

"After all the bad luck of the past months, now, things were running perfectly for us at last. I enjoyed every lap of this race," said a delighted Ekström after scoring his fourth DTM career win at Zandvoort.

Marco Wittmann, who claimed the championship title in the Lausitzring round, was in contention for victory for a long time. Having started from second place, the German already took the lead in the first corner.

Eventually, however, he didn't have a chance against Ekström, who got maximum benefit from his soft option tire in the closing stages of the race.

"This wasn't an easy race for us as there were plenty of incidents. Initially, I had a perfect start, but our option tires degraded more quickly than we had expected.

"In spite of the chaos on the track, my team always made the right decisions and called me into the pits at the right time," Wittmann said after the race.

Martin Tomczyk was also delighted after his first podium finish since August, 2012.

With his BMW M4 DTM, Maxime Martin finished sixth and thus contributed to the early title win for the BMW Team RMG in the teams' standings.

After winning the drivers' title with Marco Wittmann, this is already the second title for Stefan Reinhold's team.

In the battle for the manufacturers' title, Audi is still in contention with BMW.

As usual, the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg will be the venue for the season finale, October 19.

F1: Kevin Magnussen remembers old birthday card from Ron Dennis

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
McLaren's big boss Ron Dennis and F1 rookie Kevin Magnussen have known each other for quite a long time.

That's because Magnussen's father, Jan, drove for McLaren in the late 1990's. Without his father, Kevin might have never met joined McLaren or reached F1.

"I don't think I would be here if it wasn't for him (Jan) because McLaren probably wouldn't have looked at me," Magnussen Jr told Crash.net.

"I can't say for sure, but I can't say they would because they looked at me so early and took me in to the Young Driver Program very early, before I had any good results. All my results came after; I wasn't even in F3 when I joined them."

The F1 rookie still remembers one of his first encounters with the McLaren supremo.

"When my dad was with McLaren, I got a birthday present from Ron and I must have been four years old or something," he says.

"He gave me that birthday present and bought a card and it just said 'If you get as good as your dad one day give me a call'. Then one day about ten years later, my manager saw that card - my mum had saved it and showed my manager - and my manager said 'Ah, let's call him!'"

Rallycross: Jacques Villeneuve breaks a driveshaft in Italy

From press release

Jacques Villeneuve returned to rallycross action with a determined performance in round ten of the FIA World Rallycross Championship at Franciacorta.

The former Indycar champion thrilled the local crowds with a sterling drive against 2003 WRC champion and current World RX points leader Petter Solberg in a heat that saw the French Canadian grab the lead into the first corner.

Villeneuve looked set for an overall top 12 finish, but a heavy hit on lap two cost him around five seconds, dropping him down the order. Despite that he netted the fastest lap of the race to confirm his intention of progressing to the finals.

But a broken driveshaft in the second heat sent him into a spin, and ultimately out top 12 in the overnight standings.

"I'm pleased to be back racing in rallycross this weekend but a little disappointed with the overall overnight standings," said the French Canadian who still hopes to make the top 12 as Sunday action begins.

"We made some positive changes between open practice and the first heat, which allowed me to improve my best lap time by a second, but in the second heat I suffered a driveshaft failure, which ruined my race."

Rallycross: Jacques Villeneuve hopes ”to get to the final” in Franciacorta

From World RX

Former Formula One and Indycar champion Jacques Villeneuve returns to the FIA World Rallycross Championship this weekend at the wheel of his Albatec Racing Peugeot 208 Supercar.

The Canadian driver missed the previous two rounds in France and Germany due to prior commitments arranged before his World RX deal was completed before the season.

Villeneuve is yet to make the semi-final stages in his six World RX events this year. At his last event in Canada he was in the top six after two heats, only to retire after damaging his Peugeot 208.

"It's just been a frustrating first part of the year, at times we weren't quick enough and at others we've had some problems. I guess we've had everything happen to us already, so we should be alright this weekend," said Villeneuve, who has kept up with the team's performance in the last two races.

"I've been watching the results and the team looks to have made some good improvements so i'm looking forward to getting into the car. Most guys have been quick on the circuit based tracks.

"I don't think it's an issue for anyone to be quick here. There's one jump where you have to hit the brakes before it, so we just have to see how we get one.

"I want to get to the final obviously, but once again there are 40 cars and a lot of wildcards. If we can have four incident free races then we should be fine."
