NASCAR: Richard Childress Racing could field four Sprint Cup cars in 2014

Richard Childress, team owner of RCR, said on Monday that the loss of Kevin Harvick to Stewart Haas Racing might not mean remaining as a three car team in 2014. Currently Jeff Burton and Paul Menard round out the team.

Next year it might be different. “Right now we're finalizing some final things,” said Childress on a teleconference.  “We have sponsorship on a third and we actually have some sponsorship on a fourth. But having it all finalized and put together, it could be a couple of months down the road before we have everything ready to do some announcing on any of that.”

Clint Bowyer had been the fourth driver at RCR until the end of 2011 when he joined Michael Waltrip Racing. Now the face of the team will be changing.

Childress' grandson, Austin Dillon, will be driving for RCR in this weekend's Brickyard 400 with a view to a full-time ride in 2014.

The team's plans are for the 23-year old to race in two additional Cup races “I think we're running him at Atlanta and we're running him at Texas, two more races that we're going to race him on.”

Ironically the team owner himself didn't know if the sponsorship for this race had been announced.

“He's got a new sponsor that he's going to be carrying on the car that is really a neat sponsor,” Childress said. I don't think it's been announced yet. I don't even know when they're going to announce it. But it will be the sponsor that's at Indy, really a cool one.

Candidates for the fourth car could include Kurt Busch, currently at the one-car Furniture Row Racing, and Ryan Newman, who is currently with Stewart Haas Racing.
