On 540 diesel-powered units of the 2010 BMW X5, the fuel filter heater (used for warming diesel fuel during vehicle operation at low ambient air temperature) could malfunction and/or become permanently activated, even when the vehicle is parked and turned off, which could drain the battery.
A discharged battery would prevent engine start-up. In certain cases, the heater unit could overheat and result in a fire causing property damage and/or personal injury.
BMW dealers in Canada will therefore replace the fuel filter heater assembly. Note: This is an expansion of a 2011 recall on the X5.
