Tony Stewart, who suffered a broken tibia and fibula in a sprint car crash in Iowa on Monday August 5th , underwent a successful surgery to set his right leg in a proper alignment.

According to a team press release “the first surgery, which happened early Tuesday, Aug. 6 in Iowa, served as a preliminary procedure to stabilize and clean the Grade 2 injury. The second surgery, by a specialist in North Carolina, involved inserting a metal rod inside the tibia, pressing it to its anatomic position.

Stewart will remain hospitalized for observation. A discharge date has not been determined.”

The injury will keep the three-time Sprint Cup Champion out of action as a driver “indefinitely.”

His Stewart-Haas Racing team named the multi-talented Italian, Max Papis, as a substitute driver for the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at the road course at Watkins Glen, NY the former site of the US Grand Prix.

Stewart's injury and disability come at a particularly inconvenient time as Stewart was on the cusp of making the Chase for the Sprint Cup - NASCAR's playoffs with five races to go.

Stewart who races outside of NASCAR as a kind of hobby was leading the 30-lap American Sprint Car Series (ASCS) feature at Southern Iowa Speedway when a lapped car spun in front of him. Stewart hit the lapped car and flipped.
