Similar to BMW and Mercedes-Benz, Ford wants to use GPS data to increase the fuel efficiency of its hybrid vehicles. Called “Green Zone,” the new system will automatically switch to EV mode whenever the time is right.
With the help of the navigation system, Green Zone is able to detect when a car is entering a corner, approaching a hill or driving on the highway. As a result, the car could save its battery charge for the most EV-friendly situations.
Green Zone may wind up in Ford's next-generation hybrid vehicles if it meets efficiency and safety expectations. In its preliminary form, a driver would go to a website (or use the navigation screen) to set up specific zones, displayed in green, where the vehicle would automatically opt to run on battery power if possible.
