GM's untimely recalls to correct a faulty ignition switch have resulted in the death of at least 19 people, and not 13 as previously announced, said the lawyer in charge of compensating the victims.
Ken Feinberg has received 445 claims to this day, and 31 are eligible to a monetary compensation. In addition to the families of the 19 people who died, eight people with minor injuries and four others with major injuries will be compensated.
Under the terms of the agreement, GM will give $1 million for each casualty, plus $300,000 to the surviving spouse and $300,000 to every other beneficiary.
So far, tens of recalls have been issued by GM, affecting some 30 million vehicles worldwide.
