Facing serious air pollution issues, China is now limiting the number of vehicles that can be sold in a many key cities around the country. These limits were already in effect in four major cities, including Beijing and Shanghai, and another eight will be added to the list.
As a result of the new car “lotteries,” only 20,000 drivers -- out of 1.53 million potential buyers -- can register new vehicles each month in the four cities.
It still isn't clear whether electric cars and other low-emission vehicles will be exempt from these restrictions.
As the world's largest car market, China could rise to 35 million units sold by 2022 according to recent estimates -- more than demand in North American and Europe combined.
