After Rio de Janeiro, Rome has been confirmed on the calendar of the new Formula E championship, for electric single seaters, that will be launched in 2014.
The Italian capital is the first European city to appear on the Formula E calendar, a championship that has received the FIA label this year.
Two races in the United States should be announced soon. An Asian round will probably be announced in January 2013. Barcelona and Pau are set to be part of the calendar, the French city having already staged an electric Grand Prix in the past, featuring the electric cars of the Andros Trophy.
The Formula E cars are developed with McLaren and Spark Racing Technology, a company headed by GP2 team ART Grand Prix's boss Frederic Vasseur.
The first year of Formula E will feature ten rounds, and the organisers target a field of ten teams with two drivers each for the opening round.
