Testing for Google's autonomous vehicles in Nevada and California has shown that they're smoother and safer than human drivers.
Two separate studies of data from hundreds of thousands of miles indicate that Google's cars accelerated and braked significantly more sharply when a person was behind the wheel. The driverless cars also maintain a safer distance from the vehicle ahead.
Google has been testing its autonomous vehicle technology on public roads since 2010, always with a human in the driver's seat who can take over if necessary.
