IndyCar current champion Ryan Hunter-Reay fought among the leaders all thru the race to finally earn his first 2013 IndyCar victory at the Barber Motorsports Park.
Hunter-Reay took the lead for the last time with 15 laps to go, taking advantage of his softer red tires to move pass Helio Castroneves (Team Penske) who was struggling but soon enough found himself prey to Ganassi's Scott Dixon insistent assaults.
The American was able to maintain his leading spot and crossed the finish line with only 0.6s to spare.
Castroneves finished third followed by Dixon's teammate Charlie Kimball and his own squad partner Will Power.
Having had to start the race back in the 20th spot, St Petersburg winner James Hinchcliffe was involved in a clash with Oriol Servia and Graham Rahal only to be forced to retire early on.
Forced home also was Dario Franchitti (Ganassi Racing) who had also his share of problems with a qualification that placed him a distant 17th.
AJ Allmendinger's single-seater return ended with him finishing 19th after running in the top 10 early on.
