Australia's Motoring.au reports that the next Porsche model to receive the plug-in hybrid treatment could be the Macan compact crossover, following in the footsteps of the Panamera S E-Hybrid and Cayenne S E-Hybrid with a supercharged V6 mated to an electric motor.

"Nothing has been decided for Macan. [But] If there is market demand or legal [emissions] requirements we are ready to react. We are starting with a top-down approach," Porsche spokesman Paul Ellis told Motoring.

The aforementioned Cayenne S E-Hybrid will be unveiled at the Paris Auto Show on October 2nd, a few weeks before its global media launch.

NASCAR: Joey Logano wins at Loudon

From nascar.com

Out of the maelstrom that was New Hampshire Motor Speedway sped Joey Logano, who took control of Sunday's Sylvania 300 on a restart with 27 laps left and held on to win the second race in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.

But the crux of Sunday's race wasn't about Logano's fourth victory of the season and the second straight for Team Penske in the Chase. It wasn't about Logano winning for the seventh time in his career and punching his ticket into the second elimination round under NASCAR's new playoff format.

It wasn't about Sunoco rookie Kyle Larson posting his second straight top-three finish. Yes, Larson ran second, passing third-place finisher Kevin Harvick on a green-white-checkered flag restart that took the race three laps past its scheduled distance, but Larson was almost an afterthought amid the chaos that scrambled the Chase standings.

It wasn't about another strong run for Jamie McMurray, who finished fourth, or about a top-five for six-time champion Jimmie Johnson, who came home fifth.

It wasn't about the crazy afternoon of polesitter Brad Keselowski, who ran back and forth through the field like a yo-yo, spun on lap 194 of a scheduled 300 and nevertheless had a chance to win the race at the end before falling back to seventh on the restart that took the race to overtime.

No, the crux of the race wasn't about the winner. It was about those who survived the crucible of pressure the Chase creates -- and those who didn't.

It was about uncharacteristic mistakes on pit road. It was about the aggression and desperation on the track that left the cars of six of 16 Chase drivers in relative states of damage and disrepair, including Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Paul Menard, Kasey Kahne, Ryan Newman, Kurt Busch and Denny Hamlin.

NASCAR Sprint Cup point standings':
• Brad Keselowski, 2097 points
• Joey Logano, 2096
• Kevin Harvick, 2090
• Jimmie Johnson, 2080
• Kyle Busch, 2077

F1: Wild rumours about Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button continue to rumble

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
From GMM

Even with much of the F1 world on the long-haul return to Europe, the silly season continued to churn on Monday after the Singapore grand prix.

Fernando Alonso is still the main character, even though he is technically under contract to Ferrari for 2015 and beyond.

But there is high speculation either the frustrated Spaniard can trigger a performance-related exit clause, or that McLaren's new works partner Honda is prepared to spend millions to simply break Alonso's contract and sign him up for 2015.

Italy's respected La Gazzetta dello Sport on Monday said Alonso has even now told Ferrari that he intends to leave.

That would tie in perfectly with his claims that he might have news about his future in a couple of weeks, and rumours Honda's ideal backdrop for an announcement would be its very own Suzuka circuit ahead of the forthcoming Japanese grand prix.

McLaren, however, is denying its deliberations about whether or not to keep Jenson Button beyond 2014 are connected to rumours of a Suzuka announcement.

"Absolutely not," said team boss Eric Boullier when asked if a driver decision by McLaren might be expected in Japan.

"There are no plans to announce anything yet," he is quoted by Sky.

Curiously, the latest speculation from the McLaren camp is that Button is in fact set to get at least one more year at Woking.

Eric Boullier is even hinting that a decision about McLaren's 2015 pairing is now made.

"More or less yes," he said. "More or less it is open and more or less it is decided. Please don't twist my arm," the Frenchman smiled.

Giving even more hints now is Button himself, after weeks of obviously worrying that McLaren's eventual decision could in fact end his F1 career.

Suddenly, the 34-year-old is sounding confident.

"I'm not worried in any way about that," he is quoted by the Guardian. "I'm pretty happy I'll be here next year, and I feel I'm doing a good job right now."

Button is also now talking openly about reuniting with his old employer Honda, who will be McLaren's works partner in 2015.

"I know Honda will be giving everything to be competitive from the word go," he said.

F1: McLaren denies losing Johnnie Walker as sponsor

McLaren has hit back at reports it is set to lose Johnnie Walker as a sponsor.

The Mirror's Byron Young reported from Singapore on Sunday that, with Bernie Ecclestone securing the whisky brand as a new F1 sponsor, Johnnie Walker will now depart the beleaguered British grandee.

But McLaren has told us the report in the major British tabloid was incorrect, as "Johnnie Walker remains an important and valued sponsor of McLaren".

A team spokesman said the newspaper simply got the story "wrong".

"Yes, Johnnie Walker will be one of the sponsor logos on our 2015 car," he confirmed.

The McLaren spokesman also moved to clear up some confusion about the condition of Kevin Magnussen after Sunday's highly physical Singapore grand prix.

Reports claimed the Danish rookie had been treated for burns and dehydration in the medical centre after his McLaren overheated and his on-board drinking water boiled, but Magnussen insisted on Twitter: "That's a bit exaggerated. I was just hot and sweaty!"

But the McLaren spokesman said Magnussen, 21, was indeed treated for "nasty burns" and then tried to "make light of it" on Twitter as he is a "tough Viking boy!"

It is believed Toro Rosso's 20-year-old Daniil Kvyat was also dehydrated after his drink bottle failed in Singapore, while world champion Sebastian Vettel was suffering "severe stomach cramps" whilst spraying champagne on the podium.

Germany's RTL television said the Red Bull driver cancelled some of his media commitments after the race as he suffered from the effects of dehydration.

Just before he left the reporters, SID news agency quoted him as explaining the feeling of being passed for the lead by the winning Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton.

"Imagine driving a Fiat Panda and behind you is a Porsche 911," he said.

F1: Fernando Alonso is staying at Ferrari ”for the moment”

From GMM

As was uttered by a paddock dweller in Singapore this weekend, "There's no smoke without fire".

He was referring to the 'Fernando Alonso situation', as the Spaniard's future continues to be the subject of high speculation in formula one circles.

In Singapore, Alonso expressed what appeared to be genuine anger during his media round with foreign-language reporters on Thursday, threatening to reveal the identity of the source of the latest rumours emerging from Italy.

The implication was that the leak was from within the walls of Maranello itself, amid speculation McLaren-Honda has not given up its quest to secure the highly-paid, highly-coveted and undoubtedly frustrated Ferrari driver.

On Sunday, yet more 'smoke' from the Alonso camp continued to rise, after Niki Lauda said that "Without Fernando Alonso, Ferrari would be nowhere".

Alonso seemed to do little to dispel that impression when he remarked after finishing fourth in Singapore that "The other Ferrari is 45 seconds behind me".

Then came some curious comments not only from Alonso, but also the Ferrari team boss Marco Mattiacci.

Mattiacci has said on a couple of occasions in the past days that Ferrari will be fielding an unchanged driver lineup in 2015.

When asked the question yet again under Singapore's artificial late-night light, he answered on Sunday: "Fernando will continue. For the moment -- yes."

And when also musing Alonso's future, the Italian newspaper La Stampa quoted the Spanish driver as revealing that "There is an ongoing discussion" taking place behind closed doors.

Next Toyota Camry to use aluminum body panels

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Following several other automakers, Toyota is turning to aluminum to make its vehicles lighter. Next year, the 2016 Lexus RX 350 crossover will become the company's first model with an aluminum hood and liftgate, while in 2018 the popular Toyota Camry sedan will get an aluminum hood as well.

It appears the aluminum sheet will come from a joint venture between Kobe Steel and Toyota Tsusho Corp., a trading company affiliated with Toyota Motor Corp. Toyota will be among the venture's first customers, several sources confirmed.

Talks on site selection and final details for the joint venture are expected to conclude this month. The plant will be able to produce 100,000 tons of aluminum sheet annually.

"Toyota has plans to use aluminum on future vehicles for hood, closures and parts for lightweighting," said spokeswoman Jana Hartline. "Also, we will increase usage of mix metals and resin materials to enhance lightweighting efforts."

F1: Nico Rosberg’s Singapore problem caused by broken wiring loom

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
The Mercedes AMG Formula 1 team has explained that a broken wiring loom inside the steering column was to blame for Nico Rosberg's retirement at the Singapore Grand Prix.

Drama struck when Rosberg tried leaving the garage ahead of the start of the race as none of the controls on the steering wheel was working.

The team's software engineers tried to fix the problem on the starting grid but failed to succeed.

Rosberg started the race from the pit lane but immediately hit major problems.

"None of the steering wheel functions worked, so I had no hybrid power, no DRS," Rosberg explained.

"The gear paddles sort of worked which was strange, but they would always up shift two gears at a time, so I had no fourth or sixth gear. It was just all over the place, and that's why I was slow.

"My brake balance was completely in the wrong place and I couldn't brake properly because I couldn't change that, so everything was all over the place.,” Rosberg explained.

Monday, Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff explained the problem was traced back to the steering column, but there was no explanation for why it had happened.

"It looks like a broken loom in the steering column, which was within the duty cycle and not towards the end of its life cycle," Wolff explained.

"It just shut the whole thing down. The only thing that worked was the gear change and then the radio came back. There was no hybrid energy any more, so when we called him in we changed the steering wheel, and tried to get it going but it wouldn't,” Wolff continued.

Facing so many problems, the team decided to retire Rosberg's car from the race.

F1: Toto Wolff opposed to the idea of relaxing engine freeze

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
From GMM

Toto Wolff has declared Mercedes' obvious resistance to moves to relax F1's engine 'freeze'.

The German marque has utterly dominated in 2014, producing a clearly superior turbo V6 'power unit' than its engine rivals Renault and Ferrari.

Despite the fixed homologation of the power unit specification, the struggling suppliers can make substantial changes for 2015 in the form of a 'token' system that allows for an up to 48 per cent design overhaul.

But also being discussed is that, in the event of another situation like 2014 where one manufacturer is clearly ahead, engine makers have the opportunity to catch up mid-season.

Mercedes F1
Mercedes' V6 turbo hybrid engine (Photo: WRI2)

"Formula one is not just about different engines," Monisha Kaltenborn, whose Sauber team uses the underpowered Ferrari power unit, said in Singapore.

"Engines do play a role there but the gap should not be that big."

It is believed the prospect of one in-season engine development push has been discussed by team bosses recently, with many other non-Mercedes teams also thinking it is a good idea.

For obvious reasons, the Mercedes runners are opposed.

"No!" said Claire Williams, whose Grove based team has emerged from a slump in 2014 after switching from Renault power.

"You have to enter the season with your race car and, if you haven't done a good enough job, then why change the regulations?" she added.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has the same attitude.

"The further development of engines is absolute nonsense," he is quoted by Speed Week.

"If you are not sorted out by the homologation of 28 February for the year, why should it be any different three months later?" he asked rhetorically.

F1: Angry Rosberg tells Mercedes to improve

From GMM

One small problem has cost Nico Rosberg big under the glaring Singapore floodlights.

Long before the five lights went out on the start gantry on Sunday, the former championship leader's Mercedes crew was grappling with malfunctioning electronics on the steering wheel.

They never solved it.

"I had no hybrid power, no DRS. The gearbox was always changing two gears at once.

Nico Rosberg F1 Singapore

"I had hoped we could fix it at the pitstop, but in the end, nothing worked," Rosberg is quoted by Germany's Auto Motor und Sport.

In the end, his retirement was utterly catastrophic for his 22-point cushion against arch-rival Lewis Hamilton -- who won the race.

The Briton now leads the championship by 3 points with just five races to go.

Rosberg could not hide his anger.

"I let out a lot in the cockpit," he admitted, revealing that boss Toto Wolff even found the need to apologise.

Rosberg says the Brackley based team, so utterly dominant in performance terms in 2014, needs to work harder on reliability.

"We have already had several problems with reliability this year," he insisted. "This is our weakness.

"We need to improve the car -- it must be 100 per cent reliable," Rosberg added.

NASCAR Canadian Tire: LP Dumoulin wins first title!

JR Fitzpatrick did everything he could. LP Dumoulin did what he needed.

The result was Dumoulin was crowned the champion of the 2014 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, Saturday, while Fitzpatrick walked away with the winner's trophy for the Pinty's 250 at Kawartha Speedway.

Final championship margin: Three points.

It capped a remarkable career transformation for the 35-year-old Dumoulin, who got his start in open-wheel racing and didn't make his NASCAR debut until 2009. He ran his first full season in 2012, won his first NASCAR race last year and first NASCAR oval race this season.

Dumoulin qualified 15th and finished ninth at Kawartha. It was enough for him to edge Fitzpatrick for the title after the latter won the pole award and led the most laps en route to his third victory of the season.

Fitzpatrick led three times for 171 laps, including the final 78. A late caution gave Steckly one more shot with seven to go, but Fitzpatrick pulled away to win by .229 seconds.

It was all for naught, though, as a 100-lap green flag run in the middle of the race left just 10 cars on the lead lap and all but ensured Dumoulin the title.

He entered the race with a 16-point lead and needed to only finish 11th or better to claim the championship.

Defending race and series champion Steckly finished second at Kawartha, while Jason Hathaway, Mark Dilley and Kennington rounded out the top five.

F1: McLaren loses sponsor deal to Ecclestone

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
From GMM

McLaren has reportedly suffered yet another sponsorship blow.

On the eve of the Singapore grand prix, Bernie Ecclestone unveiled whisky brand Johnnie Walker as a new official sponsor for the sport.

Speed Week asked the F1 supremo how he always manages to collect top backers, while the teams themselves are struggling commercially.

"The teams also have great sponsors," the 83-year-old Briton insisted.

"Johnnie Walker has sponsored one of the teams," Ecclestone.

He was, of course, referring to McLaren, the British grandee team that in the wake of Vodafone's departure has failed to sign a new title sponsor in 2014.

Not only that, amid McLaren's performance slump, long-time sponsor Hugo Boss jumped ship to Mercedes.

And now, according to the Mirror newspaper, McLaren is losing Johnnie Walker as well.

Correspondent Byron Young said that as the drink brand's parent Diageo signs up with Ecclestone, its withdrawal of the McLaren deal is a "crippling blow" for the Woking based team.

"The decision will come as another embarrassment for boss Ron Dennis who has refused to cut his rate card despite the recession," said Young.

Ironically for McLaren veteran Jenson Button, however, the financial struggles in F1 could now be his best chance to stay on the grid beyond 2014.

If the pitlane drops below ten teams, Ecclestone will ask the richer teams to bolster numbers by running third cars.

But Button said he would prefer if his talks with Dennis result in a new deal on its own merit.

"I talk to Ron a lot. It's all moving along fine," he said in Singapore. "I'm not scared of anything.

"I would rather not have to think about the only way I have a career next year is with a three car team. I like F1 the way it is."

2015 Ford Mustang First Impression

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Hollywood, CA — When you're known for doing something, like really known, and you tend to do that something really, really well; you'd better not mess it up the next time you try and do it in front of a bunch of people expecting you to be nothing short of amazing at it.

Ford is known for the Mustang. This is their storied, cult classic car that's made their brand the thing if boyhood posters and manhood fantasies. The Mustang is one of those cars, like the Challenger and Corvette, that young boys (and girls) craned necks to see as they rumbled past on the street.

So, has Ford managed to maintain that boyhood charisma that's made the Mustang so appealing for 50? After cruising Mulholland Dr., the Pacific Coast Highway, and pushing the ‘Stang on twisty canyon roads, I kinda think they have.

Photo: Miranda Lightstone

Doesn't it have an EcoBoost engine now?
Alright boys and girls, gather round, I have a secret to tell you. Are you listening? Ready? Even though the EcoBoost is only a 2.3L inline-4, it's boosted which means its got pull (320 lb-ft of torque over the 3.7L V6's 280), which means it's a blast to drive plus it's gonna save you money at the pumps down the road. It's a wonderful engine that feels light and playful in comparison to the heavy-duty, hard-hitting 5.0L V8.

Complemented by the 6-speed manual transmission (that's in need of a short-shift upgrade), the 310-horsepower EcoBoost feels sublime and sounds great too. The faint whistle of the turbo as it spools is music to any car lover's ears, and the gears are so easy to row through you'll enjoy every moment behind the wheel.

Oh, but that V8
Of course, if you want more of the Pony Car experience, you should look no further than the 5.0L V8. From the moment you press that start-stop button and the V8 rumbles to life, your senses will tingle and you'll just want to press the throttle down as often as possible.

Equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission, the 5.0L 2015 Ford Mustang GT was malleable and oh-so fun to throw into the corners. With 435 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque, the 5.0L is a bit of a beast. Power is sent out the rear wheels (and with it in full Stig mode as I called it - there's a track setting that looks like the Stig's helmet - which turns off all traction control) meaning that getting the bum out is oh-so easy and oh-so tempting. The V8 makes the Mustang feel a bit nose heavy, especially in the corners, but it is still more than possible to throw this coupe around and have a blast.

However, despite an updated suspension and rear differential, it felt a bit soft to me. Having just driven the Challenger (another Halo Car), I found that the Challenger felt much sportier than the Mustang which at times felt dopy and a bit too body-roll-y for my liking. Consequently, the ride is actually very, very comfortable and perfectly suited for everyday use, even with a Performance Pack attached to the top GT model.

The retro look is so hot
And you'll agree with me here. Ford took all the things that were every good about the Mustang in the past, modernized them, and stuck them on the 2015 model. Instead of a choppy, angular mug, the front is now sleek, sexy and oh-so macho. LED headlights and the signature three-bar sequential-turn-signal rear LED taillights are perfectly placed and sized. Exaggerated rear wheel arches make for an aggressive, ready-to-pounce stance, and the prancing pony and clean rear trunk design come together beautifully to complete the 2015 Mustang package.

My favourite exterior bit? The 5.0L GT features rear-facing nostrils on the hood (one on each side) and when you're in the car looking forward, you see them ever so slightly flanking the “power bulge”. Love it.

Inside, the centre stack was completely rethought and is user friendly, and actually very simple. No overload of buttons or fancy bits. It's all there and it's all in easy to reach buttons and knobs. Of course, Ford's Sync system is in place, but if you've got the V8 you'll only want to listen to that exhaust note anyways.

Does it pony up against the competition?
Well, this falls directly in line with the recently redesigned Challenger, Charger, and ‘Vette. These are all Halo Cars, all American muscle vehicles that were once known for straight-line prowess and lots and lots of power under sculpted hoods.

The new Mustang is right in line with that, but also on to something more with the introduction of the EcoBoost engine into the lineup. With a starting price just under $25k for the 300 horsepower V6 Coupe and the top model GT Premium Coupe sitting just shy of $50k, there are many options and engine specs for you to play with in order to build your perfect Mustang.

Is it the best Mustang so far? I'm not totally convinced of that, but I do know it's an improvement on the outgoing model and it looks bloody sexy and is a ton of fun to drive. In my mind, Ford did it right.
