2015 Porsche 918 Spyder Track Test

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Every so many years, Porsche launches a supercar that serves as a technological gene pool from which future products will draw. Today, the all-new Porsche 918 Spyder has debuted as the latest Stuttgart supercar that'll earn a place in the history books.

Big Numbers
When you walk up to its swooping carbon-fibre reinforced body stuffed with racing seats and batteries and heaps of really next-level tech bolted beneath, the machine's vital numbers pop into your head and cause nervous pangs in your stomach: 887 horsepower; no less than $845,000 USD; the better part of a thousand lb-ft of torque (a thousand). And that's the sort of “right now” torque generated in part by a pair of electric motors, so there's lots of it, everywhere, all the time. Quarter-mile pass? Look for 10 seconds or less. Top speed? Well beyond 200 miles per hour.

Performance wise, this 918 Spyder would rip up a 911 Turbo S and leave it looking like Tyrannosaurus used it as a chew toy. It also costs as much as four of them (Turbos not T-Rexes).

High Tech Power -- and heaps of it
Even accelerating in E-Power mode solely on stored electricity out of pit lane onto Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway, the 918 Spyder leaps forward with alarming urgency at any touch of the throttle. In the same way a sports car shows off the sound of its engine, the 918 Spyder proudly floods the cabin full of noises from the electric propulsion system in the form of clicks and whining and whirring away as electricity is generated, stored, and dispensed to all four wheels at the driver's command. It's the sort of high-tech aural symphony you'd expect to hear in the engine room of the USS Enterprise -- especially during regenerative braking. This isn't one of those ghostly quiet hybrids.

There's a drive-mode dial on the steering wheel, similar to the picture-mode dial you'll find on a digital SLR camera. Race Hybrid mode comes online with a two-click twist, firing up the 4.6L V8 the instant the dial sets into its detent. It's abrupt and nearly startling as the gasoline side of the 918's propulsion system barks loudly to life before settling into a quivering, uptight idle as it waits for further throttle application.

Horrifying acceleration
Full throttle application generates a horrifying reaction. With on-demand all-RPM electric torque boosting the high-strung thrust of the 9,100 RPM V8, acceleration is truly instant, and violent in intensity. There's no building up to a power peak: the 918 Spyder just leaps forward with immediate ferocity. That's accompanied by a jagged growl-turned-wail from the combustion engine, which sends spent fuel out of a foot-long exhaust system with tailpipes that exit the top of the engine cover, just behind the driver.

If you'd like to hear it, and watch me experience it for the first time, first-hand, here you go:

Braking capabilities from the ceramic rotors and their monstrous fluorescent green calipers is absolutely crushing, and the pedal communicates that with decent feedback and little of the spongy, inconsistent feel typical of brake systems in conventional hybrids. You can hear the braking too, via the collection of noises generated as the hybrid componentry converts some of the braking force -- all of it in less urgent stops -- back into electricity stored in the mid-mounted battery for future blasts of acceleration that would coax sequential F-Bombs out of even your church-going grandmother.

An easy-to-drive rocket car
Things happen brutally fast in the 918 Spyder, and it demands your absolute attention. Horrifying acceleration aside, this is a super-Porsche that's super-flattering to drive. Though the numbers, pricing and especially acceleration and cornering Gs are among the most intimidating you'll find in something with four wheels and a warranty, the driving experience isn't.

The steering ratio and effort and feel are not unlike a Boxster or Cayman: direct, smooth, quick, and tidy without being hyperactive or nervous. Gentle and smooth inputs are rewarded, meaning less stress on the driver. Handling limits are too high for anyone other than veteran racing drivers to fully exploit, though as mid-engine Porsches tend to be, the 918 Spyder feels like a forgiving, flattering, and supportive partner with a feeling that each system is carefully calibrated against all of the others.

That's part of the Porsche mid-engine magic. Whether it's a Cayman, Boxster or this new 918 Spyder, the underlying sensation is one of expert calibration of its driving dynamics towards performance that's easy to tap into for drivers of virtually any skill level.

After a few hot laps, stepping back out over the wide carbon-fibre door sills for the first, and likely, last time, I felt strangely fine. I'd imagined a fight, a struggle, numerous startling moments and exhaustion, and instead found an experience that backs drivers up with an overall sense that they're not fighting with the car, but that they're working in sync. So, this big-dollar, big-power supercar should prove surprisingly easy to access, performance-wise, for the 918 lucky folks who will get to own one.

If you'd like to be one of them, make tracks to your local Porsche dealer with the $200,000 deposit ASAP, because at the time of writing, much of the scheduled production has already been spoken for.

F1: Sauber quiet amid Lawrence Stroll buyout reports

From GMM

Sauber is quiet amid reports the Swiss team is being sold to the Canadian retail billionaire and racing enthusiast Lawrence Stroll.

On Sunday, a report emerged in Germany that said Stroll, whose son Lance is part of Sauber engine supplier Ferrari's driver academy, is in talks with the obviously financially-struggling Hinwil based team.

And it is believed the subsequent report at Motorsport.com was based on sources close to Stroll himself, who is associated with famous fashion brands including Michael Kors, Tommy Hilfiger and the Red Bull sponsor Pepe Jeans.

He also owns the former F1 circuit at Mont Tremblant, and numerous Ferrari road cars.

But the well-connected Swiss F1 veteran Roger Benoit, who writes for Blick, was cautious on Sunday amid the reports.

"We have seen other sale attempts fail," said Roger Benoit. "Stroll is also associated with Lotus. As was the case over a year ago with (Sauber's deal with) the Russians, let's wait."

And 20min.ch, a respected Swiss news outlet, quoted team founder Peter Sauber and boss Monisha Kaltenborn as saying: "No comment."

Confidence-Enhancing Camera Systems

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Have you seen this commercial? In it, stunt drivers in a rolling train of Hyundai's latest Genesis Sedans exit the moving vehicles in a totally “do not try this at home” fashion, letting the safety systems bring the driverless train of cars to a stop when the lead vehicle applies some heavy braking.* The gist? Using radar, lasers, and (more than ever) cameras today's breed of high-tech rides is becoming more self-aware and safe than ever.

Today, cameras are cheaper, better and smaller than ever before, and they're winding up more and more often in new rides, powering advanced safety and hazard-detection systems like those showcased in the commercial.

Many new camera-based features exist, so here's a look at how automakers are tapping into advanced camera technology to make rides that are easier than ever to drive safely.

A do-it-all Backup Camera: On some Nissan models, the backup camera system has numerous added responsibilities. In addition to displaying a real-time image of the area behind the reversing vehicle, the wide-angle camera watches the area at the rear of your vehicle for signs of trouble.

Since the rearview cam can see the road markings, it powers the Lane Departure Warning System, which alerts drivers if they're accidentally venturing out of their lane. The camera can also see the vehicle's blind-spots, and powers the Blind Spot Warning System to tell drivers if they're about to side-swipe a Corolla when changing lanes. Nissan's even developed a cleaning system that pipes a single drop of washer fluid onto the camera lens and blasts it clean with a whiff of compressed air, so there's always a good view.

The new Mercedes S-Class can even see out of its backup camera to determine if it's about to be rear-ended by another vehicle. If it is, the brakes are pre-locked, helping minimize subsequent collisions.

LaneWatch Camera: Signal right, and the camera mounted to the passenger side mirror of numerous Honda models displays a wide-angle video down the side of the car on the central display screen for added safety. The camera can be activated by pressing a button on the end of the turn-signal lever, too.

My father is an avid cyclist who frequently complains of being cut off by cars turning right, and this system could enhance safety for dad and his pals. From the driver's seat, added confidence results from the ability to triple-check your blind-spot via the wide-angle camera. In all, drivers get a better sense of what's going on near their ride.

Lane Watch

360 Degrees of Awareness: Imagine being able to see 360 degrees around your vehicle on a single screen when you back up. That's what numerous automakers, including BMW, Volvo, Land Rover, Nissan, and Mercedes-Benz are doing with their advanced parking camera systems. Using inputs from multiple cameras, an image processor simulates a virtual birds-eye view of the area around your ride in real time. Drivers get added confidence in tight quarters, since they're able to see completely around their ride on a single screen.

Land Rover has even expanded on this type of system with camera angles that display the wheels and path of travel ahead -- presumably for precise and puncture-free tire placement in an off-road setting.

Smart Rearview: Using a high-resolution camera mounted at the rear of the vehicle and an LCD monitor in the rearview mirror, Nissan's Smart Rearview system puts a forward-thinking take on seeing behind you. The Smart Rearview system works just like a normal rearview mirror -- although it's not obstructed by rear seats, passengers, interior panels or tall items you might be carrying in the cargo hold. Drivers get a better, wider, and non-obstructed view out the back of their ride, and thanks to advanced image processing software they can see more clearly in rain, snow, in the dark, and in situations where glare might be an issue. You can turn the system off and use the good old-fashioned rearview mirror, if you like.

EyeSight: Subaru is big on safety, and their latest EyeSight system takes it to new levels. Using a pair of cameras mounted side by side (just like human eyes) to see in 3D (just like human eyes) the system powers features like Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning and Pre-Collision Braking for added confidence. EyeSight can even see clumsy pedestrians text-walking in front of your Outback and apply the brakes to avoid hitting them, in some situations. Hell, if there's a stationary car in front of you, EyeSight can even tell the throttle to ignore your foot for a moment, so you don't accidentally rear-end someone if you suffer a momentary case of pedal confusion.

Eye Sight
Photo: Subaru

Night Vision: It's been the curse of mankind's existence for millenniums: pesky lions, raccoons and fruit-bats can see in the dark, while we humans fumble around and whack into stuff like Jim Lahey on a Sunday afternoon bender.

Automakers have responded to our nocturnal vision handicaps and created a solution: Night Vision. Once reserved solely for military use, night-vision technology is available in numerous premium rides, allowing you to “see” differences in temperature between various surfaces or to see reflections from infrared light that's blasted ahead of the ride.

An enhanced view of the area ahead is displayed for the driver -- potentially providing early warning of hazards up the road. Some systems even highlight pedestrians or animals on-screen before they're visible to drivers in their headlights.

*Note that the systems were modified for the filming of the commercial. In real-world application the camera-guided cruise would shut off once the car detected a lack of presence on the steering wheel. In other words, do not try this it at home with your new Hyundai Genesis Sedan.

F1: Sergio Marchionne says even Montezemolo ”can be replaced”

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
From GMM

An obvious dispute is playing out between Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo and his potential successor, Sergio Marchionne.

At Monza, Montezemolo half-heartedly denied increasingly insistent reports that he is set to step down and become boss of the Italian airline Alitalia.

But since then, it has become clear that Montezemolo, whose prominence at Maranello dates all the way back to the Niki Lauda era, is also locked in a dispute with Marchionne, the chairman of the 90 per cent Ferrari owner Fiat.

Marchionne was quoted on Sunday as saying he took exception to statements Montezemolo made at Monza about his role at Ferrari.

"It creates the illusion of being outside the rules," Sergio Marchionne is quoted by Italy's Autosprint.

"Ferrari is a subsidiary of Fiat, but a certain independence from the product and market positioning was important.

"But I, like many others, are at the service of the company," he insisted. "When a company changes its mind, things change."

It seems the divide between Marchionne and Montezemolo has opened up because of Ferrari's struggle for performance and success in formula one.

"On the economic results (of the road car division)," said Sergio Marchionne.

"Luca did a great job and I congratulate him. But the other side is sports management. Ferrari is in F1 to win, I've been a fan for years, and it's hard to see Ferrari in this situation -- with the best drivers in the world, engineers who are really good, and no (title) win since 2008.

"It is essential to have a Ferrari that represents victory in F1, and this is not negotiable -- it is an absolutely clear objective and we cannot accept a situation other than this. I do not want to see us seventh or twelfth.

"A change in the presidency is not on my agenda, but everyone can be replaced," Sergio Marchionne concluded.

Antoine L'Estage and his codriver Alan Ockwell of the Yokohama Canada Rally Team won the 2014 edition of the Rallye Defi by winning every stage of the rally.

They drive their Mitsubishi Lancer EVO to overall victory on the hard packed gravel roads in the Quebec Laurentians.

The Rallye Defi was the third round of the Canadian Rally Championship and it featured over 175km of competitive special stages split over two days of racing.

“It's been a textbook rally for us,” said L'Estage. “We did have some problems with the car today, so we had to turn down the boost to make sure it stayed reliable to the finish.

“The Yokohama tires were really good in the rough stuff yesterday and today. I've been with them for ten years, and they're a big part of our success.”

Martin Rowe and Nathalie Richard contested Rallye Defi as their first event competing together. The Subaru Rally Team Canada duo debuted the new 2015 Subaru Impreza STI rally car.

Despite some teething issues that at points caused the team to drop out of a podium position, a late charge on the final loop of stages was enough to claim second place.

Third place went to Joel Levac and Stephanie Lewis. The result matched their finishing position from the Rallye Baie-des-Chaleurs two months ago. Driving a MINI Countryman [a former WRC race car], the two found they were forced to push themselves faster than ever before.

The two-wheel drive class was full of strong competition.

Chris Greenhouse and Billy Irvin drove through rough conditions on the first day of racing to carve out a small lead over their rivals. The team built on their advantage over the balance of the first day to a lead of two minutes.

Rallye Defi Final Results
1. Antoine L'Estage - Alan Ockwell - one hour, 30 minutes, 01.8 seconds
2. Martin Rowe - Nathalie Richard - 1:33:30.5
3. Joel Levac - Stéphanie Lewis - 1:33:33.8
4. Maxime Labrie - Anick Barrette - 1:34:20.1
5. Jean-Sebastien Besner - Yvan Joyal - 1:35:48.0
6. Sylvain Vincent - Simon Vincent - 1:37:33.8

NASCAR: Jason Hathway wins again in Barrie

From NASCAR

It took a few extra laps, but Jason Hathaway left Barrie Speedway with a win Saturday night.

The Dutton, Ontario, native won the Wahta Springs 300 for the second year in a row. It marked Hathaway's second NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 victory of the season and fifth of his career.

Pole winner J.R. Fitzpatrick finished second, followed by D.J. Kennington, L.P. Dumoulin and Jeff Lapcevich.

Joey McColm, Noel Dowler, Erica Thiering, Matthew Scannell and Alex Tagliani rounded out the top 10.

Saturday was the best career finish for rookies Thiering and Scannell.

Hathaway became the first back-to-back winner at the track since Scott Steckly won both series events at the .333-mile tri-oval in 2008.

“I knew in the end there, I wasn't going to give it up, no matter what it took,” Hathaway said. “It was a hell of a battle with J.R. [Fitzpatrick] tonight, and I'm glad it was him and nobody else, because we come out smiling at the end and shaking hands, talking about it all week because he and I are real good buddies.”

An accident on the frontstretch involving Tagliani on Lap 298 set up the green-white-checkered finish attempt. Fitzpatrick, looking for his first Barrie win, got the edge on the restart from the outside row and led by a nose at the white flag, but ultimately couldn't overcome Hathaway for the checkered flag.

“I got the run I needed, going into Turn 3 (of the final lap) I was ahead and he shoved me up the hill just an extra little bit where I couldn't get to the throttle as soon as him,” Fitzpatrick said. “It was exciting for the fans. It was close, really close.”

The final margin of victory was a miniscule 0.121 seconds.

With one race to go, Dumoulin now leads Fitzpatrick in the championship standings by a tally of 418-402.

The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series championship will be decided in the season finale on Saturday, Sept. 20 in the Pinty's 250 at Kawartha Speedway in Fraserville, Ont.

2015 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Preview

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Pros: The 2015 Land Rover Range Rover Sport handles more like a sports sedan than a luxury SUV. The supremely powerful engine provides exhilarating performance and acceleration. The 2015 Land Rover Range Rover Sport is the epitome of luxury both inside and out.

Cons: As expected, the V8 version of the 2015 Land Rover Range Rover Sport is always thirsty. Its tapered roofline limits rear visibility. Speaking of the rear, it isn't the easiest place to enter and exit. The prohibitive price of the 2015 Land Rover Range Rover Sport does nothing to overcome the nagging reliability issues.

2015 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Price: The four different versions of the 2015 Land Rover Range Rover are priced as follows: the Sport SE at $73,990, the Sport HSE at $78,990, the Sport Supercharged at $91,490 and the Sport Autobiography at $104,990.

2015 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Fuel Economy: Fuel economy ratings for the 2015 Land Rover Range Rover Sport have not been released at this time.
Improvements and Changes: No major changes have been applied for 2015.

2015 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Powertrain: Land Rover proposes two engine options based on the selected Range Rover Sport model: a supercharged 3.0 litre DOHC V6 that produces 340 hp or a supercharged 5.0 litre V8 with an impressive 510 hp. 2014 Nissan NV Preview

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Pros: Even though the first generation of Nissan NVs only appeared in 2012, they have made their mark in a market dominated by American vehicles, including the Ford Transit, the Ram ProMaster, and by the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. This passenger van comes in an impressive range of models. Extremely versatile, the NV is extra roomy for front seat passengers as well as having a generous amount of cargo space.

Cons: While considering that the Nissan NV has only been on the market for three years and despite its distinctive qualities, it falls behind its American and German competitors. Although both powertrains offered are reliable, they consume a lot of fuel. Indeed, it is regrettable that Nissan has not yet put forward a version with a Diesel engine and a 6-speed transmission.

Nissan NV 2014

2014 Nissan NV Price: Nissan has placed two models on the market for 2014: the NV Cargo, starting at $31,498, and the NV Passenger, starting at $38,398. For the NV Cargo, the Japanese manufacturer proposes the 1500 S, 2500 S/SV V6, 2500 S/SV V8 and 3500 S/SV V8 models. Meanwhile, the NV Passenger is available in S/SV/SL.

Fuel Economy: For all models, the V6 NV is rated at around 12.9 L/100 km, while V8 model can reach up to 14.9 L/100 km.

Improvements and Changes: Because it has only been on the market since 2012, the 2014 Nissan NV has not seen any major changes.

2014 Nissan NV Powertrain: Under the hood of the 2014 NV, Nissan offers either a 4-litre, V6 DOHC engine that generates 261 horsepower or a 5.6-litre, V8 DOHC that produces 317 horsepower. A 5-speed automatic transmission is available on all models.

Cargo Capacity: The loading capacity for the Nissan NV Cargo is 6,629 litres, while the high roof version has a 9,149-litre capacity. However, only 818 litres of load space is available in the Passenger model.

Safety: Safety-wise, the 2014 Nissan NV boasts ABS brakes, brake assist, electronic brake force distribution, dynamic stability control and traction control.

Comparing the 2014 Nissan NV: This van segment also includes the Ford Transit, the Ram ProMaster and the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.

A preliminary calendar for 2015 is doing the rounds in the Monza paddock.

The schedule, first published by Speed Week after seeing it at the scene of the Italian grand prix, features all 19 grands prix that are on this year's calendar, plus Mexico, with the old Mexico City layout set to host a race in late October.

"The track only needs to be resurfaced," Bernie Ecclestone told reporters earlier at Monza.

But according to Speed Week, many of the dates on the provisional 2015 calendar - currently featuring an unprecedented 20 races - are in fact not set in stone.

Organisers of the Australian grand prix, however, are already advertising next year's Melbourne race, reportedly to open the world championship as usual, for March 15.

And the report said Abu Dhabi will once again host the finale at the end of November.

Williams will field an unchanged race driver lineup in 2015.

The news, announced by the British team early on Sunday, ends speculation Finnish sensation Valtteri Bottas could be scooped up by a grandee team like McLaren.

And there had been rumours in the past days that Brazilian Felipe Massa, who joined the team from Ferrari this season, might be replaced by his well-sponsored countryman Felipe Nasr for 2015.

F1: McLaren’s Honda era could get early debut

McLaren's Honda era could get an earlier than expected start.

Just days ago, the returning Japanese manufacturer's F1 chief Yasuhisa Arai said it is "very likely" the first run of its all-new turbo V6 engine would be at the official start of the winter testing season next February.

"Jerez will be the first time," he announced.

But as far as McLaren is concerned, that might not be right, even though team boss Eric Boullier said at Monza that he is "100 per cent aware" of what Arai said.

"Regarding the first test of the McLaren, Honda-powered car, there is no decision yet about when and where. This is still open," the Frenchman insisted.

"It is true there was a comment, but we will not give a definite answer now because we do not know exactly, but it is very likely it will be before Jerez," added Boullier.

That ties in with rumours McLaren is currently working on an adaptation of the currently Mercedes-powered 2014 car to accommodate the Honda 'power unit' for testing.

Asked if it could debut at the end-of-season test in Abu Dhabi, Boullier agreed: "Yes.

"This is not definite," he insisted. "It is true the safe side is we will be in Jerez with a McLaren-Honda car."

F1: Monza’s future remains in doubt

As the F1 world rejoices at the historic, high speed and highly popular Monza, the future of the fabled Italian grand prix remains in serious doubt.

Bernie Ecclestone, the sport's chief executive, said recently the current contract is "a disaster for us from a commercial point of view. After 2016, bye-bye."

The comments sparked waves of worry among F1 fans and, in particular, the world-famous Tifosi.

For Ferrari, too, Monza is important.

"Monza is unique," the Maranello marque's president Luca di Montezemolo told Italian-speaking reporters at the Autodromo Nazionale on Saturday.

"The atmosphere here is second to none. I cannot imagine that there will be problems for the future of this race, but I will talk with Bernie Ecclestone," he announced.

Talks, however, are already taking place this weekend between Ecclestone and new Monza official Ivan Capelli, an Italian and former F1 driver.

Capelli is quoted by Speed Week: "I have already met with Bernie Ecclestone and in the coming days there will be more meetings.

"I will do everything in my power to retain the grand prix here. We strive for an extension until 2020, when the current Concorde Agreement expires," he revealed.

Ecclestone also confirmed that meetings with Monza officials have taken place.

"I spoke with them this morning and it is quite simple: all we want is that Monza agrees to the contractual terms of all the other European races," he said at Monza.

"I would just take the contract of any other race and put in the word 'Monza'."

He said he was confident a deal will be reached in the end. "I hope so," said the F1 supremo. "They seem like competent people."

F1: Montezemolo denial not stopping future rumours

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
From GMM

Luca di Montezemolo's half-hearted denial on Saturday has not stopped rampant speculation about the long-time Ferrari president's future.

Some outlets quoted the charismatic 67-year-old as having said he is definitely staying put at Maranello for another three years.

But that's not what he said -- he said he gave his "commitment" to the shareholders in March, presumably also signing a contract, for a longer reign.

Germany's Bild newspaper says it has learned that, behind red garage doors, a "raging dispute" is now taking place about the terms of Montezemolo's early exit.

"As usual, it's about money," read the report.

The discussions may also be about the post-Montezemolo shuffle, with boss Marco Mattiacci or perhaps Fiat's tipped Sergio Marchionne to replace him.

Luca di Montezemolo Marco Mattiacci Ferrari

Ross Brawn could then return to F1 to replace Mattiacci as new team boss, as Montezemolo reportedly eyes the top job at the Italian airline Alitalia.

"I'm not going to comment on rumours," Mattiacci said on Friday. "Plenty of work on my table. No comment."

So while comments are shy, rumours prevail. One is that Montezemolo has fallen out with fellow officials over the theatre for Ferrari's stock floatation -- Hong Kong or New York?

Pino Allievi, the best known and most highly respected Italian correspondent in F1, insisted: "This is Luca's last visit here at Monza (as Ferrari president).

"It's the end of an era," the La Gazzetta dello Sport veteran added.

Even Piero Ferrari, the only living son of the great Enzo Ferrari, is saying nothing: "I have nothing to say," he is quoted by Speed Week at Monza.

"I'm only a minor shareholder."

F1: Max Verstappen closing in on super license

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
From GMM

Max Verstappen's high speed rush from boyhood to the formula one grid will continue apace next week.

At Monza, Toro Rosso and Red Bull chiefs Franz Tost and Dr Helmut Marko respectively have played down the 16-year-old teen's slow-speed crash during one of his very first demonstration outings in a F1 car recently in Rotterdam.

It is believed Verstappen got caught out by the same sort of 'anti-stall' issue that may have caused Mario de Villota's crash in the Marussia two years ago.

"It's probably easier driving on a circuit than trying to do donuts," said Daniel Ricciardo, a highly successful product of Red Bull's famous junior programme. "It's harder than it looks."

So Verstappen's charge to become the youngest ever F1 racer by some margin races on undiminished.

The next step is obtaining the young Dutchman's super license, amid speculation Red Bull is eyeing an earlier than expected Friday practice debut for Verstappen in 2014.

Earlier, it was announced that he would make his debut in this year's Toro Rosso ahead of the US, Brazilian and Abu Dhabi grands prix at the tail end of the season.

But now it is believed Red Bull is targeting a Suzuka debut for Verstappen in just a few weeks' time.

To that end, Speed Week reports that, next week, Verstappen will be in action at the Adria circuit in northern Italy, with a two-year-old Toro Rosso at his disposal.

Also present will be FIA officials, to observe Verstappen's progress over the necessary 300 kilometres to qualify for the mandatory F1 license.

On his anticipated Friday debut in Japan, Verstappen will be exactly 17 years and 4 days old.

"What I'm a little bit concerned about is the message that could send to those thousands of kids starting to approach racing or karting," Ferrari team boss Marco Mattiacci said at Monza, when asked about Verstappen's inexperience and age.

Lotus team deputy Federico Gastaldi agreed: "I think they (young drivers) should have more kilometres under their arms. They should have definitely much more experience, like in the old days."

F1: Rumour suggests Canadian Lawrence Stroll is buying Sauber

F1's 2015 'silly season' is no longer just about the drivers.

Now, it is major rumblings about the teams themselves that are making waves as the sport packs up after Lewis Hamilton's win at Monza.

Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll is tangled in a shocking story, started by a 'tweet' from Williams chairman Adam Parr: "This is the last year of F1 as we know it."

Parr is referring to the potential exit of three teams, which would force several teams to enter three cars.

In the midst of it all, Stroll, whose teenage son Lance is a member of the Ferrari driver academy, looks set to buy back Sauber.

Like the Swiss team, Stroll Sr has indeed strong ties with Ferrari, including a dealership and an impressive collection of road cars from Maranello.

A report from Motorsport.com said the deal was "as good as done".

But in the paddock, everyone was speculating over the identity of the three departing teams.

One might be Caterham, after its founder Tony Fernandes recently sold to a mysterious Swiss-Middle Eastern consortium.

The latest rumour is that the Leafield based team's newly-installed boss Christijan Albers has quit because promised funds from the new owners did not materialise.

Caterham announced on Sunday that Dutchman Albers has indeed resigned to "spend more time with my family", with Manfredi Ravetto taking over.

Also undoubtedly struggling is Marussia, who according to driver Max Chilton at Spa had resorted to trying to "sell my seat" to stay afloat.

And Lotus was strongly tipped to be moving to end its current slump by installing Mercedes power for 2015, until speculation emerged the deal has been held up because a deposit to the German marque was not paid.

But could the multiple struggling teams' potential demise, and thereby the need to boost the grid next year with third car entries, explain the recent quickfire spate of bosses meetings with Bernie Ecclestone?

Mercedes' Toto Wolff said on Friday that the latest meeting, held at Monza, was "nothing very spectacular".

"It's just another meeting we had, another important meeting."

From NASCAR

Brad Keselowski led all but 17 of 400 laps in winning the Federated Auto Parts 400, the final race of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series regular season.

In the process, he won his fourth race of the season and secured top seeding for the 10-race Chase, which starts Sunday, Sept. 14 at Chicagoland Speedway.

Ryan Newman and Greg Biffle secured the final two of 16 Chase spots on points, Newman with a solid ninth-place run, Biffle with a much shakier 19th-place finish, two laps down.

But it was Keselowski who made the statement in securing the 400th victory across all racing series for team owner Roger Penske.

"What a night!" Keselowski said.

"Part of me, I pulled into victory lane and I pinched myself once to make sure I wasn't dreaming. These are nights you don't forget as a driver—and you live for. The Miller Lite Ford Fusion was just flying, and this is— I couldn't ask for a better way to enter the Chase than to win and take the first seed.

Keselowski, the Coors Light pole winner, took the lead for the final time on Lap 127 when he beat race runner-up Jeff Gordon and Kevin Harvick, the race's only other leader, off pit road. From that point on, Keselowski's No. 2 Ford was untouchable.

The other drivers who qualified for the Chase are: Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr, Jimmie Johnson, Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick, Carl Edwards, Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Kurt Busch, Kasey Kahne, Aric Almirola, AJ Allmendinger and Matt Kenseth.
