2014 Volkswagen Jetta Preview

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Pros: Volkswagen's compact hero, the Jetta, is more American than ever. Larger and roomier, it also offers more comfortable seats and superb ergonomics. Yet driving dynamics have been preserved in the process. There's also a fantastic model and engine lineup to suit various tastes and budgets.

Cons: Styling is clean, yes, but also rather bland. The recent price cut is the result of an anaemic base engine and sub-par noise insulation. Finally, some reliability issues remain.

2014 Volkswagen Jetta Price: The 5 trim levels range from Trendline ($14,990) to Highline TDI ($27,790).

2014 Volkswagen Jetta Fuel Economy: Look for the Jetta to average anywhere between 4.5-10.0L/100km depending on the model and powertrain.

Improvements and Changes: To replace the obsolete 2.5L inline 5-cylinder engine, VW opted for a 1.8L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine. Gone is the torsion beam rear suspension; say hello to a multilink setup. New colours have been added.

2014 Volkswagen Jetta Powertrain: There are 3 engines to choose from including a 115-horsepower 2.0L 4-cylinder, a 170-horsepower 1.8L turbocharged 4-cylinder, and a 140-horsepower, 2.0L turbodiesel. Available transmissions include 5- and 6-speed manual gearboxes, a 6-speed automatic, and the acclaimed 6-speed DSG.

Cargo Capacity: The Jetta's trunk can hold up to 440 litres of gear. The split-folding rear seats maximize versatility.

Safety: ABS, brake assist, electronic brake force distribution, stability control, and traction control all come standard. In the event of a collision, the Intelligent Crash Response System and 6 airbags will protect Jetta occupants.

Comparing the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta: The compact car segment is loaded with great models such as the Chevrolet Cruze, Dodge Dart, Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, Kia Forte, Mazda3, Nissan Sentra, Subaru Impreza, and Toyota Corolla.

2014 Subaru Impreza Preview

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Pros: The 2014 Subaru Impreza has an edge in any weather in the form of standard all-wheel drive. A small engine/CVT combo helps it achieve high fuel economy. And two different body styles are available including a 4-door sedan and 5-door hatchback.

Cons:
While efficient, the CVT doesn't exactly boost the fun factor behind the wheel. Plus, more powerful alternatives exist out there. The interior has a stern look and feel.

2014 Subaru Impreza Price: Subaru offers four sedan models -- ranging from $19,995 to $26,895 -- and four 5-door models -- from $20,895 to $27,795.

2014 Subaru Impreza Fuel Economy: Expect 5.9L/100km on the highway and 8.3L/100km in the city with the manual transmission, or 5.5/7.5L/100km with the optional CVT. This makes the Impreza the most fuel-efficient AWD car in Canada.

Improvements and Changes: Not much beyond new body colour options.

2014 Subaru Impreza Powertrain: The base 2.0L horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine produces 148 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque through a 5-speed manual gearbox or a CVT.

Cargo Capacity: The sedan's trunk can haul just 340 litres of cargo. In the hatchback, there are 638 litres at your disposal -- 1,485 litres when you fold the rear seats.

Safety: The 2014 Subaru Impreza comes standard with six airbags, ABS, brake assist, electronic brake force distribution, brake override, stability and traction control, and hill-start assist.

Comparing the 2014 Subaru Impreza: Standard all-wheel drive mainly sets the Impreza apart from other compact cars such as the Chevrolet Cruze, Dodge Dart, Ford Focus, Kia Forte, Hyundai Elantra, Mitsubishi Lancer, Mazda3, Nissan Sentra, Toyota Corolla/Matrix, and Volkswagen Jetta/Golf.

2014 Audi A7 Preview

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Pros: A distinctive, coupe-like silhouette that integrates a rear hatch for easier access to the trunk, numerous gadgets and technologies, high levels of comfort and interior refinement, the legendary quattro all-wheel drive system, and a fuel-efficient TDI engine are definite draws with the 2014 Audi A7.

Cons: The lack of rear-seat kneeroom and headroom, a firm ride with the optional 20'' wheels, and a premium gas requirement may curb a potential buyer's enthusiasm.

2014 Audi A7 Price: The lineup includes two trim levels: Progressiv and Technik. The first one starts at $70,400; the second retails from $75,800. The TDI option boosts prices by $2,500 respectively.

Audi A7 2014
Photo: Audi

2014 Audi A7 Fuel Economy: First, you should know that a start-stop system can help you save energy and thus reduce CO2 emissions. The 2014 Audi A7 burns 11.6L/100km in the city and 7.4L/100km on the highway. With the new TDI, however, these ratings drop to 8.5L/100km and 5.3L/100km, respectively.

Improvements and Changes: The Audi A7's nomenclature has changed for 2014, and prices are slightly up. Of course, the biggest news is the 3.0L, direct-injected turbodiesel (TDI) V6 that provides heaps of torque and, more importantly perhaps, big fuel savings.

Powertrain: The 2014 Audi A7 is motivated by a standard 3.0L supercharged TFSI V6 that produces 310 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque. The alternative is the aforementioned TDI unit, which generates 240 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque.

In normal situations, the quattro system has a 40/60 bias; when the front wheels start to slip, it can send as much as 70% of the available torque to the front axle.

Audi A7 2014

Cargo Capacity: Thanks to the 60/40 split-folding rear seats, the trunk can expand from 694 to 1,390 litres -- enough for skis, golf clubs, luggage, and more.

Safety: In addition to standard features like six airbags and electronic stability program, the 2014 Audi A7 can be equipped with rear side airbags, adaptive cruise control, side assist (blind spot monitoring), and active lane assist (which helps the car stay in its lane). Other options such as LED headlights and a night vision system improve visibility.

Comparing the 2014 Audi A7: The main rivals of the A7 are the Mercedes-Benz CLS, Porsche Panamera, as well as the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo and 6 Series Gran Coupe. Don't miss our 4-door luxury coupe comparison!

2014 Nissan Xterra Preview

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Pros: The 2014 Nissan Xterra 2014 is a genuine off-roader, a well-designed vehicle for both practical use and sometimes excessive abuse. For example, there's much to admire about the robust suspension, ingenious, multi-purpose stowage system, generous ground clearance, and easy-clean interior surfaces.

Cons: On the other hand, the Xterra is starting to show its age, particularly as far as the truck-like cabin is concerned. Despite its excellent off-road capabilities, when the Xterra finally returns to civilization, just about everything is a strike against it. Iffy handling, underwhelming suspension, and weak fuel economy don't help its cause.

2014 Nissan Xterra Price: The base S model starts at $33,448 and includes 16'' alloy wheels, tubular step rails, the Utili-track rail system, and Bluetooth connectivity.

Priced at $35,498, the more rugged PRO-4X model adds a bunch of features such as high-performance Bilstein shocks, skid plates, fog lights and off-road lights, heated leather seats, and a rearview camera.

Nissan Xterra 2014
Photo: Nissan

2014 Nissan Xterra Fuel Economy: You'll get 13.6L/100km in the city and 10.1L/100km on the highway when using the manual transmission, or 14.4L/100km in urban driving and 10.1L/100km on the highway with the autobox.

Improvements and Changes: Standard equipment for both trim levels has been slightly enhanced, and the wheel designs revised, but the biggest news is the NissanConnect system with navigation, voice command, and 5.8'' touchscreen in PRO-4X trim. It also includes NissanConnect Apps for smartphone users.

Powertrain: The 4.0L V6 engine under the hood of the 2014 Nissan Xterra produces 261 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque through a standard 6-speed manual transmission or an optional 5-speed automatic. A 4-wheel drive system with 2-speed transfer case is also part of the mix. The up-level PRO-4X model benefits from clutch start/cancel (manual transmission only), as well as an electronic locking rear differential.

Cargo Capacity: The trunk can accommodate 991 litres of cargo. With the rear seats folded, there are up to 1,869 litres available for your gear.

Safety: The 2014 Nissan Xterra comes with six airbags. The automaker also offers active front headrests, ABS, as well as stability and traction control. Hill descent control and hill start assist are available to boost driver confidence, especially off the beaten paths.

Comparing the 2014 Nissan Xterra: The main rivals of this off-road specialist are the Jeep Wrangler and Toyota FJ Cruiser.

2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Sedan Preview

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Pros: Ergonomic controls, firm seating, the variety of available models, optional 4-wheel drive and V8 power, comfortable ride, and great handling make the 2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class a highly coveted sedan.

Cons: However, you can fault the sedan for its overly complicated multimedia system and lack of a manual transmission. Plus the base engine tends to run out of steam, and you have to pump it with premium gas.

2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Price: The sedan comes in five trim levels including C 250 ($39,700), C 300 4MATIC ($42,250), C 350 ($49,850), C 350 4MATIC ($52,800), and the high-performance C 63 AMG ($73,350).

Mercedes C-Class Sedan 2014
Photo: Mercedes-Benz

2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Fuel Economy: The most fuel-efficient of all the models, the C 250, consumes 9.0L/100km in the city and 6.2L/100 km on the highway. The C 300 4MATIC, C 350, and C 350 4MATIC all have similar fuel ratings -- just over 10.5L/100km in the city and about 7.2L/100km on the highway.

With the mighty C 63 AMG, expect 15.8 and 10.1L/100km, respectively.

Improvements and Changes: Since the next-generation 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class made its world debut in Detroit in January, the 2014 model year only comes with slight modifications. For instance, the power sunroof and heated front seats now come standard. Meanwhile, the C 63 AMG is sold as Edition 507 (a nod to its increased power).

Powertrain: Normally a rear-wheel-drive car, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class can also be equipped with the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. The C 250's 1.8L, 4-cylinder turbo engine produces 201 hp and 228 lb-ft of torque, while the 3.5L V6 delivers 248 hp and 251 lb-ft of torque under the hood of the C 300 4MATIC, yet 302 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque in the C 350. Both engines are coupled with a 7-speed 7G-TRONIC PLUS transmission.

As for the C 63 AMG, a thundering 6.2L V8 packs 507 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. This model is also fitted with a 7-speed SPEEDSHIFT MCT AMG transmission.

Cargo Capacity: There's 475 litres of trunk space in the 2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Sedan.

Safety:
This model is equipped with seven airbags, as well as many active safety systems including stability control, crash-responsive pedals, a brake wear indicator, and NECK-PRO headrests.

Comparing the 2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class: Longing for an affordable, yet sophisticated, luxury sedan? You should compare it with the Acura TL, Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Cadillac ATS, Infiniti Q50, Lexus IS, and Lincoln MKZ.

2014 Nissan Juke Preview

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Pros: This oddball crossover offers many attractive features and benefits including a spirited turbo engine, optional all-wheel drive, nifty handling, comfortable seats, and a firm suspension. All in all, the 2014 Nissan Juke kind of feels like a sports car.

Cons: You don't go out and grab a Juke for its roominess or practicality, which turns out to be rather limited. Moreover, the manual transmission is available only with front-wheel drive, and the continuously variable transmission (CVT) is noisy. The engine also proves thirsty when pushed.

2014 Nissan Juke Price: Similar to last year, the Juke SV starts at $19,998. It includes 17'' alloy wheels, an auxiliary audio input jack, hands-free Bluetooth, power windows, 60/40 split-folding rear seats, high-end cloth seating, as well as a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gearshift knob. The same model is offered with all-wheel drive for $23,478.

At $29,678, the better-equipped Juke SL is now much more expensive since the Leather & Navigation Package has been added as standard equipment, along with all-wheel drive.

Nissan Juke 2014
Photo: Nissan

2014 Nissan Juke Fuel Economy: With FWD models you get 8.2L/100km in the city and 6.4L/100km on the highway when using the manual transmission or 7.5L/100km in urban driving and 6.1L/100km on the highway when the CVT is selected. Meanwhile, the AWD-equipped 2014 Nissan Juke boasts ratings of 8.0L and 6.6L/100km, respectively.

Improvements and Changes: Aside from the trim changes mentioned above, the big news for 2014 is the introduction of the NISMO RS, which was unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. This model stands out with a more explosive engine, a helical limited-slip differential (manual transmission), extra structural rigidity, larger brakes, genuine Recaro front seats, carbon fibre-look accents, and a special red-and-black colour theme with suede, Alcantara, and leather appointments. The NISMO RS is available in Sapphire Black, Brilliant Silver, and Pearl White.

Powertrain: The 2014 Nissan Juke exploits a 1.6L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 188 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque through a 6-speed manual transmission or the optional Xtronic CVT.

The NISMO special edition bumps output to 197 horsepower, while the new NISMO RS cranks it up even higher to 215 horsepower (with 210 lb-ft of torque).

Cargo Capacity: You'll find 297 litres of space in the trunk. When you fold the rear seats down, the cargo area increases to 1,017 litres. Several configurations and compartments are available.

Safety: The 2014 Nissan Juke comes with six airbags. The automaker also offers active front headrests, ABS, stability and traction control, as well as the priority braking system, which reduces engine power when drivers simultaneously apply the brakes and throttle, thereby slowing down or immobilizing the Juke in complete safety.

Comparing the 2014 Nissan Juke: Alternatives to the Juke are as plentiful as they are diverse. The Scion xB, Kia Soul, Toyota Matrix, Chevrolet Trax, Mitsubishi RVR, Subaru XV Crosstrek, Volkswagen Golf, and MINI Cooper Countryman are just a few examples.

2014 Scion xB Preview

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Pros: The 2014 Scion xB stands out with boxy looks, generous interior room, a reliable powertrain, and easy access. The company also puts a lot of emphasis on customization, allowing buyers to select from a plethora of accessories and parts to make their xB even more unique.

Cons: Interior fit and finish is disappointing, the cabin is noisy, and the shock absorbers are generally too firm. Poor ergonomics and a 4-speed-only autobox also betray this ageing model, which desperately needs refreshing.

2014 Scion xB Price: Starting at $18,960, the lone trim level comes standard with air conditioning, cruise control, heated mirrors, a 6.1'' touchscreen, and audio controls on the steering wheel. You can add a number of options such as a premium Pioneer sound system with navigation ($1,025), 19” alloy wheels ($1,729), as well as several TRD performance parts including bigger brakes ($1,782) and firmer springs ($828).

Scion xB 2014

2014 Scion xB Fuel Economy:
Expect to achieve 8.4L/100km with the manual transmission or 8.5L/100km with the automatic transmission during combined city-highway driving.

Improvements and Changes: For 2014, a limited edition called Scion 10 xB features an exclusive Silver Ignition body colour, 16'' alloy wheels, illuminated front and rear emblems, a unique shift knob, silver seat belts, electroluminescent gauges, and a serialized plate.

2014 Scion xB Powertrain: The 2.4L 4-cylinder engine under the hood produces 158 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque thanks to intelligent variable valve timing. Transmissions include a standard 5-speed manual and an optional 4-speed automatic. No all-wheel drive configuration appears on the xB's menu.

Cargo Capacity: Versatility is one of the strengths of the 2014 Scion xB. The trunk alone can hold up to 329 litres of cargo. Folding the rear seatbacks forward creates a flat floor that multiplies cargo possibilities.

Safety: In addition to six airbags, the xB benefits from Toyota's STAR Safety System, which consists of Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, an Anti-lock Braking System, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Smart Stop Technology, and Brake Assist. A tire pressure monitoring system is also included.

Comparing the 2014 Scion xB: Looking for a small crossover or wagon to make a statement in a crowd? Consider alternatives like the Nissan cube/Juke, Kia Soul, Mazda3 Sport, MINI Cooper Countryman, Mitsubishi RVR, and Toyota Matrix.

2014 Volvo XC70 Preview

Pros: The 2014 Volvo XC70's styling is equal parts classy and rugged. In typical Volvo fashion, drivers enjoy very comfortable seating and a good driving position. AWD and generous ground clearance make the XC70 excel in any weather as well as off the road. Safety is exceptional, and reliability inspires confidence.

Cons: You can't have it all, of course. Pricing is a bit dissuasive, especially when you look at a top-of-the-line model and the various options. Some of the controls are dated, and braking distances could be shorter.

2014 Volvo XC70 Price: There are seven trim levels to choose from this year, ranging from the base 3.2 AWD at $43,450 all the way to the luxurious and powerful T6 AWD Platinum at $52,350.

2014 Volvo XC70 Fuel Economy: Expect the XC70 to average 9.4L/100km with the 3.2L engine and 9.9L/100km with the turbo.

Volvo XC70 2014
Photo: Volvo

Improvements and Changes: Beyond a few cosmetic upgrades, the 2014 Volvo XC70 gets a new Sensus communication interface, a 7'' display with infrared activation, a heated windshield and steering wheel, a customizable TFT gauge cluster, revised transmission ratios, new ambient lighting, as well as a new pedestrian and cyclist detection feature for the frontal collision mitigation system.

2014 Volvo XC70 Powertrain: Volvo offers two inline 6-cylinder engines with the XC70. The naturally aspirated 3.2L unit produces 240 horsepower, while the turbocharged 3.0L variant generates 300 horsepower. Both are mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual mode.

Cargo Capacity: You can fit 944 litres worth of gear behind the rear seats, but if you fold the latter, capacity increases to 2,042 litres.

Safety: Volvo enjoys a stellar reputation for safety, and it shows in the 2014 XC70, which includes ABS, brake assist, stability and traction control, adaptive cruise control, adaptive lighting (headlights that swivel in corners), pedestrian and cyclist detection, distance alert, driver drowsiness alert, lane departure warning, and collision warning with full auto brake. Some of these features are optional, mind you.

2014 BMW M5 Preview

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Pros: The 2014 BMW M5's impressive power and handling, high-performance brakes and suspension, excellent seats, great visibility, and vast array of comfort and convenience amenities combine to make it a truly unique performance sedan.

Cons: On the flip side, the BMW M5 suffers from excess weight and a harsh ride at times. The multiple gadgets require a learning curve, while the naturally aspirated V10 engine that powered the previous M5 is missed by some, especially its soundtrack. Let's not forget the six-figure price tag.

2014 BMW M5 Price: Buyers can get a brand new M5 for a base MSRP of $101,500, and add options such as a Bang & Olufsen sound system ($4,900), Competition Package ($6,500), and Premium Package ($10,500). And thanks to BMW Individual, they can further customize their M5.

BMW M5 2014
Photo: BMW

2014 BMW M5 Fuel Economy: The official combined city-highway rating for this four-door German rocket is 12.1L/100km with the manual transmission and 13L/100km with the autobox, which is remarkable considering the power on tap (see below).

Improvements and Changes: The 2014 BMW M5 is now available with a Competition package that includes black-chrome dual sport tailpipes, unique 20'' wheels, and minor chassis revisions (more direct steering ratio, re-engineered suspension, enhanced M Dynamic mode). In addition, all M5s receive subtle styling updates, a new steering wheel, and touchpad entry capability for the iDrive infotainment system. Adaptive LED headlights are a new option.

2014 BMW M5 Powertrain: The high-revving M TwinPower Turbo V8 engine of the new BMW M5 makes a statement with its performance and acceleration. Consider these numbers: 502 lb-ft of torque, 560 hp, and 0-100 km/h in 4.3 seconds (with the Competition Package: 575 hp, 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds). A double turbocharger with enhanced intercoolers ensures all that torque is available from 1,500 to 5,750 rpm. Valvetronic timing and high-precision injection also help set standards for performance and fuel consumption, along with regenerative braking and auto start/stop.

The engine is mated to either a seven-speed M dual-clutch transmission or a 6-speed manual gearbox at no extra cost, plus an active M differential that supplies optimum traction and supports the dynamic qualities of the rear-wheel drive -- both when accelerating out of corners and manoeuvring on slippery surfaces.

Cargo Capacity: The M5's trunk can hold up to 520 litres of cargo.

Safety: In addition to stability and traction control, the 2014 BMW M5 offers head-up display, night vision, adaptive cruise control, high-beam assist, and various camera systems around the vehicle to boost safety.

Comparing the 2014 BMW M5: Mouth-watering alternatives to the M5 include the Audi A6/RS7, Cadillac CTS Vsport, Jaguar XFR-S, and Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG.

2014 Toyota Prius Plug-in Preview

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Pros: A roomy interior, short turning radius, compliant suspension, excellent fuel economy, and quick charging times make the 2014 Toyota Prius Plug-in an ideal city car.

Cons: A dated dashboard design and slow throttle response put a damper on the driving experience.

2014 Toyota Prius Plug-in Price:
This model retails for $35,705 before taxes, freight and delivery charges, and provincial rebates -- a difference of nearly $10,000 from the regular Prius ($26,105). The Technology Package requires a premium of $5,235.

2014 Toyota Prius Plug-in Fuel Economy: The 2014 Toyota Prius Plug-in achieves 3.7L/100km in the city and 4.0L/100km on the highway in hybrid mode, as well as a gasoline equivalent of 2.0L/100km in the city and 1.9L/100km on the highway in EV mode. With a 40L tank, you can cover anywhere between 1,100 and 1,500 kilometres provided that you plug the car in every so often.

Toyota Prius Plug-in 2014
Photo: Toyota

Improvements and Changes: With the next-generation Toyota Prius already in the works, the 2014 model year brings no changes other than a body colour (Alpine White) being eliminated.

Powertrain: The 2014 Toyota Prius Plug-in is equipped with an Atkinson-cycle, 1.8L 4-cylinder engine and a high-output electric motor, which together produce 134 horsepower through a continuously variable transmission.

The regular Prius is fitted with a nickel-metal hydride battery, while the Plug-in gets a higher-capacity, lithium-ion unit. Instead of an EV mode range of about 2 kilometres in the regular Prius, the Plug-in model can travel up to 25 kilometres on electric power alone, even at highway speeds.

Plug the car into a 120V household outlet, and you'll charge the battery pack in about three hours. If you hook up to a 240V charging station, a full charge will only take an hour and a half.

Cargo Capacity: The 2014 Toyota Prius Plug-in can pack up to 612 litres of gear behind the rear seats.

Safety: Standard features include stability and traction control, disc brakes with ABS, brake assist, and electronic brake force distribution, as well as smart stop technology, which automatically cuts engine power and allows the brakes to take precedence over the accelerator when both pedals are pressed at the same time. Let's not forget the seven airbags and active front head restraints.

Comparing the 2014 Toyota Prius Plug-in: The Ford Fusion Energi currently poses the biggest threat to the Prius Plug-in. Honda will soon get into the mix with the Accord Plug-in Hybrid.

2014 Audi A8 Preview

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Pros: A lightweight and rigid Audi Space Frame combines with the legendary quattro all-wheel drive system to deliver surprisingly lively handling. The adaptive air suspension ensures top-notch ride quality, and the lavish interior oozes with refinement and comfort (18-way adjustable seats, anyone?). The dynamic-looking and extremely classy 2014 Audi A8 also offers a long-wheelbase variant with more passenger room in the back, as well as unique engine options that either boost fuel economy or power.

Cons: The high price (relative to most competitors) may discourage some buyers, while others still won't be fans of Audi's MMI interface. It's also possible that the exterior looks are too understated for your liking. Finally, the trunk is relatively small for a full-size sedan.

Audi A8 2014
Photo: Audi

2014 Audi A8 Price: The standard A8 escalates from $90,700 (3.0T) to $108,000 (4.0T), with the A8 TDI ($93,900) sitting in between. Long-wheelbase models range from $98,200 (3.0T) to a whopping $173,000 (W12). Various options and packages can increase the final tally.

2014 Audi A8 Fuel Economy: In its most frugal trim (TDI), the 2014 Audi A8 burns 8.7L/100km in the city and as little as 5.3L/100km on the highway -- with the big tank, you'll easily cover more than 1,200 kilometres. Conversely, the W12-powered, long-wheelbase A8 has ratings of 16.4L/100km in the city and 10.8L/100km on the highway

Improvements and Changes:
An already strong engine lineup enters a new dimension with the arrival of a 3.0L, direct-injected, turbodiesel (TDI) V6 that provides heaps of torque and, more importantly perhaps, big fuel savings. Subtle design tweaks and option changes are part of the mix, too.

Powertrain: A well-calibrated, 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are standard equipment on every Audi A8. Audi Drive Select allows you to adjust throttle response, steering, and suspension feel.

The base 3.0L supercharged TFSI V6 produces 333 horsepower, the mid-range 4.0L turbocharged TFSI V8 develops 420 horsepower, and the almighty 6.2L W12 engine cranks out 500 horsepower. Last, but not least, is the aforementioned TDI unit, which generates only 240 horsepower, but as much as 406 lb-ft of torque.

Audi A8 2014

Cargo Capacity: The 2014 Audi A8 has a 374-litre trunk, and the rear seats do not fold down.

Safety: In addition to standard features like an electronic stability program and a full suite of airbags, the 2014 Audi A8 can be equipped with adaptive cruise control, advanced parking assist, and even a top-view camera. Other options such as LED headlights with high-beam assist and a night vision system improve visibility.

Comparing the 2014 Audi A8: The full-size luxury sedan market boasts some pretty big names including the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series, Jaguar XJ, and Lexus LS. Let's not forget more affordable alternatives like the Acura RLX, Cadillac XTS, Lincoln MKS, and Hyundai Equus.

Pros: The stylish 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe XL stands out from the regular, short-wheelbase Santa Fe Sport with a 60/40-split third-row seat that boosts seating capacity to seven while increasing versatility. Equipped with a powerful V6, it offers spirited acceleration and tows up to 5,000 pounds.

Cons: The V6's fuel economy is somewhat disappointing. One could say the same thing about cargo room behind the third-row seat. Steering lacks feedback, while the big sideview mirrors affect forward visibility.

Hyundai Santa Fe XL 2014

2014 Hyundai Santa Fe XL Price: The base FWD model costs $30,999. Every other trim benefits from AWD, including the Premium at $34,999. Next up is the Luxury, which retails for $39,799. Finally, the top-of-the-line Santa Fe XL Limited, available in 6- and 7-passenger configurations, starts at $43,199.

2014 Hyundai Santa Fe XL Fuel Economy: Official ratings are 11.5L/100km in the city and 7.7L/100km on the highway. AWD models burn an extra 0.3L/100km.

Improvements and Changes: Barely one year old, the Hyundai Santa Fe XL returns virtually unchanged for 2014. Some new standard and optional features appear on each trim level (base model: new 4.2'' LCD screen, third-row climate controls, etc.), which explains the minor hikes across the lineup.

Powertrain: The 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe XL exploits a 3.3L V6 with gasoline direct injection, and AWD is optional. Output is rated at 290 horsepower, while maximum torque amounts to 252 lb-ft. It's all handled by a 6-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC manual mode.

Pros: The Chevrolet Equinox is a class leader in storage space behind the seats, and will hold five adults in relative comfort. This will appeal to the price-conscious consumer as will the choice between FWD and AWD as well as choosing between a four or a V6.

Cons: The Equinox is in need of an update and could seem dated inside and out to some potential buyers.

Price: The Chevy Equinox Basic MSRP consists of four trim levels and a choice of front- or all-wheel drive.
Front Wheel Drive   All Wheel Drive
LS: $26,375    LS: $28,575
1 LT: $28,375    1 LT: $30,575
2 LT: $30,475   2 LT: $32,675
LTZ: $35,875   LTZ: $37,175

Fuel Economy:
Front-wheel drive (city/highway/combined in L/100km)
• 2.4L I4: 9.2/6.1/7.8
• 3.6L V6: 12.4/8.1/10.5
All-wheel drive (city/highway/combined in L/100km)
• 2.4L I4: 10.1/6.9/8.7
• 3.6L V6: 13.2/8.4/11.0

Improvements and Changes: Chevrolet has left the Equinox alone for 2014 with the only changes being chrome-clad wheels on the LTZ trim level and a new colour called Silver Topaz Metallic.

Exterior: Equinox now wears Chevrolet's Global face which is a two tier grille with a prominent Bow tie insignia. Wrap around headlamps can be upgraded to projector-style lamps by moving up to the LTZ trim package. Another must-have for those cold and rainy days is the power programmable rear lift gate.

Interior: The Chevy Equinox offers rear seat passengers the most rear-seat legroom in its class. There's a closed storage space under the front seat armrest that can hold a laptop, and there are four 12-volt power outlets, as well as eight cup and bottle holders throughout the interior.

Some models of the Equinox have an Active Noise Cancellation System that contributes to the exceptional interior quietness. Another interesting option is a remote starter that, on cold days, activates the front and rear defrosters, seat heaters, and the heated external mirrors via a touch of a button on the key fob.

Cargo/Towing/Payload/Capacity: The Chevrolet Equinox has 892 litres of space behind the rear seats so that you can haul a month's worth of groceries for four quite easily. Towing a trailer requires the trailer towing package, the trailer hitch, the V6 engine option, and limiting your trailer to a total weight of 1,588 kg (3,500 lb).

Powertrain: Standard on all Equinox models is a 6-speed automatic with an “Eco” mode when ordered with the 2.4L four. This feature alters shift points to improve fuel economy.

Engine choices include the standard 2.4L Ecotec four that produces 182 horsepower and 172 lb-ft of torque. The optional V6 produces a heady 301 horsepower and 272 lb-ft of torque.

The 3.6 integrates the exhaust manifold with the cylinder head for a weight saving of close to 6 kilos while switching to a composite intake system shaves another 3 kilos from the engine. Internals, such as connecting rods, have been both strengthened and lightened.

Safety: Front, front seat side impact and side curtain airbags are standard as are four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, Stabilitrak stability control, traction control, roll mitigation, and electronic brake force control. In addition, daytime running lights and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System make the standard equipment list.

All Equinoxes have a six-month subscription to OnStar™, t the global leading provider of connected safety, security, mobility solutions, and advanced information technology.

A back-up camera, forward collision alert, lane departure warning, and rear park assist are optional or standard on upper trim levels.

Comparables: Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, Ford Escape, and Dodge Journey, Jeep Cherokee, Subaru Forester, Nissan Rouge, Ford Escape.

2015 BMW i8 Preview

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Pros: The BMW i8 combines lightweight design, high-efficiency gasoline power and a new hybrid drive system to create a new sports model that turns in exceptionally low emissions and fuel consumption, alongside over 360 horsepower and a 0-100 km/h time of under 4.5 seconds. The brand's upcoming model truly pushes the envelope when it comes to efficient performance, embodying the latest and most advanced take on the brand's “efficient dynamics” mantra. With two doors and four seats, the BMW i8 should be just fine for a trip with four adults on board.

Cons: The i8 is relatively un-proven, packs numerous all-new technologies, and will be pricey when it does go on sale. Numerous other conventional, gas-powered posh rockets can be had in the same pricing ballpark. No manual transmission will be available.

2015 BMW i8 Pricing: At writing, sources estimated the U.S. starting price of the i8 to land around $140,000, targeting other alternative models like the Tesla Model S.

2015 BMW i8 Fuel Economy: Thanks to its slim weight, advanced hybrid powertrain and small but potent gasoline engine, the i8 should turn in fuel consumption around 2.5L/100km.

Improvements and Changes: The i8 is an all-new model, so improvements and changes aren't applicable.

Don't Miss: The mass-saving tricks. The BMW i8 rides a Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) body shell, as its lightweight centerpiece, and also features thin, chemically hardened lightweight glass similar to the stuff you'll find on your iPad. Even the seats and climate control ducts are made from special materials selected for their lightweight properties, and shoppers can opt for a set of lightweight carbon-fiber wheels, too.

A convertible Spyder model is expected to join the lineup, as well.

2015 BMW i8 Powertrain: BMW i8 drivers get a 3-cylinder turbocharged gas engine, as well as an electric motor drive system. The two work together via intelligent energy management. The mid-mounted 1.5L gasoline unit makes 231 horsepower on its own,, all of which is sent to the rear wheels by a 6-speed automatic. A 9-speed automatic is coming later, and there's no manual available.

The 131-hp electric system powers the front wheels with a range of up to 35 kilometres and a top speed of 120 km/h -- after charging fully in as little as 1.5 hours with an optional quick charger.

Total system output is rated at 362 horsepower and some 420 lb-ft of torque.

Safety: Though details are sparse on the full list of BMW i8 safety equipment, shoppers can expect full voice command, steering-wheel mounted controls, advanced airbags, traction control, stability control, and a crash-optimized body structure as a minimum. A powerful set of laser-fired headlamps will be available, advancing beyond even current LED headlamp technology, though this system isn't likely to make it to our market because of safety regulations.

Comparables: When it launches, the BMW i8 will compete largely with models like the Tesla Model S and the rumoured-to-be-coming Audi R8 E-Tron.

2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Preview

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Pros: Introduced last year, the Subaru XV Crosstrek has proven to be a nice addition to the Japanese manufacturer's lineup. It's safe, fun to drive, and competent both on and off the road thanks to a standard all-wheel drive system that has made Subaru famous the world over.

Cons: The manual transmission has five gears only, so there's room for improvement there. The ride isn't as smooth as one could wish for on slick pavement. Also, higher trim levels are just as expensive as the more spacious Forester.

2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Price: Buyers have a choice of four models including Touring at $24,495, Sport at $26,495, Limited at $28,995, and Hybrid at $29,995.

2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Fuel Economy: Gasoline-powered models achieve 6.7L/100km on the highway and 8.9L/100km in the city with the manual transmission, or 6.0/8.2L/100km with the optional CVT. In hybrid form, expect 6.9/6.0L/100km.

Improvements and Changes: The biggest news for 2014 is the introduction of the Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid.

2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Powertrain: If the standard 148-horsepower, 2.0L 4-cylinder engine isn't enough for you, maybe you should consider the XV Crosstrek Hybrid, which adds an electric motor to generate 160 net horsepower. A 5-speed manual transmission and a Lineartronic CVT appear on the menu. Of course, Subaru's symmetrical all-wheel drive system is standard fare.

Cargo Capacity: You'll find 632 litres of cargo space behind the rear seats, and 1,470 litres behind the front seats.

Safety: The 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek comes standard with ABS, brake assist, electronic brake force distribution, stability and traction control, as well as automatic headlights.

Comparing the 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek: Similar SUVs and CUVs include the Jeep Patriot, Nissan Juke, Mitsubishi RVR, and MINI Cooper Countryman.

Improvements and Changes: Now standard in the back of the centre console are dual, charge only, USB ports for use by those in the second row of seats.

On the LTZ Chevrolet has added forward collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning system and a crash avoidance system. These features are optional on the LT.

Exterior Changes: Chevrolet has left the exterior alone, instead concentrating on exterior accessories such as chrome door handles that help differentiate the four trim levels.

Interior Changes:
Traverse provides a comfortable ride for up to eight passengers. For 2014 the only difference shown is the dual, charge only, USB ports in the back of the center console. Consumers still have a choice between a pair of bucket seats or a bench seat for the second row with the third row is a 50/50 folding seat.

Cargo/towing/payload: Maximum towing capacity is rated at 2,358 kg (5,200 lbs) and requires the trailer-towing package. Maximum cargo volume is 691 liters behind the third row seat.

Powertrain: The revised 3.6L, DOHC, 24 valve, direct injected, V6 now features a one piece cylinder head with the exhaust manifold to reduce weight and is the only engine used in the Traverse. Power output is 281 horsepower with a single exhaust and 288 with a dual exhaust. Peak torque for the single exhaust is 266 ft.lb. while the dual exhaust produces 270 lb.ft.

A six-speed automatic with an integral transfer case (for the AWD system option) has sixth gear as an overdrive. The six-speed automatic is the only transmission offered on the Traverse.

Seat belt pretensioners, LATCH system of anchoring child seats and tire pressure monitoring system are standard as well. On LTZ trim models; a Forward Collision Alert Monitor and a land Departure Warning System are included. The 2 LT has these two items as options.

Comparables: Mazda CX-9, Toyota Highlander, Hyundai Santa Fe XL, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Kia Sorento, Ford Explorer and Flex.

2014 Volkswagen CC Preview

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Pros: The 2014 Volkswagen CC is a genuinely European midsize sedan with modern flair and sophistication, world-class engineering, firm handling, and a great driving experience. Even the base model comes with an interesting list of features and amenities.

Cons: While the entry price point is relatively affordable, higher trim levels appear too expensive for what you actually get, so you might want to purchase a luxury sedan instead. The 4-cylinder is great, but the V6 burns a lot of gas -- premium gas, by the way. Finally, all-wheel drive is only available with the V6.

2014 Volkswagen CC Price: The base Sportline model starts at $36,050, while the more upscale Highline retails from $40,575. The range-topping Highline V6 costs $49,690.

Improvements and Changes: The 2014 Volkswagen CC gains standard keyless access with push-button start. The R-Line Package is now available with the Sportline model. New colours have been added.

2014 Volkswagen CC Powertrain:
There are two options to choose from including a 200-horsepower 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder with front-wheel drive, and a 280-horsepower 3.6L V6 with 4MOTION all-wheel drive. Power goes through either a 6-speed manual transmission or the acclaimed 6-speed DSG with Tiptronic.

Cargo Capacity: The CC's trunk can hold up to 400 litres of gear, right around the segment's average.

Safety: ABS, brake assist, electronic brake force distribution, stability control, and traction control all come standard. In the event of a collision, the Intelligent Crash Response System and 6 airbags will protect CC occupants.
