Bruno Spengler (BMW) will start from pole position in Spielberg, Austria, for the third round of the DTM championship.

Spengler, who sits second in provisional championship classification, thanks to a 5th place in Hockenheim, and a 2nd position in Brands Hatch, was fastest in Q4 with a lap in 1'24''836. He will start alongside another BMW driver, rookie driver Marco Wittmann, who could have scored his first career pole.

Edoardo Mortara was third quickest, being the first Audi driver at the end of the session, ahead of Augusto Farfus' BMW, who won the opening round in Hockenheim, and retired in Brands Hatch.

The fastest Mercedes was only 7th, as Robert Wickens put his C-Coupé in the inside of row 4. Mercedes n°1 driver Gary Paffett will only start from 10th position after he could not set a lap time in Q3 following an engine issue. Championship leader Mike Rockenfeller will start from 8th position, driving his Audi RS 5.

2009-2013 Mazda6 Pre-Owned

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Model: 2009 to 2013 Mazda6

Vehicle Type: Sedan

The Verdict: The last-generation MAZDA6 was loved for its style, design, and performance -- and it looks like a solid used-car buy, too.

Price: Second generation MAZDA6 prices span widely, though shoppers after a more basic, 4-cylinder model with some miles can expect pricing to start around $9,500 and climb as high as $30,000 for a 2013 “demo” model with minimal miles on a fully loaded unit. The market offers plenty of selection from about $11,500 to $17,000, depending on the model and options required.

What Owners Like: Styling, both inside and out, were big draws to the second-generation MAZDA6 -- as was its refinement and availability with a manual transmission. Visibility, feature content, overall roominess and even instrument cluster lighting were all highly rated, too. Performance from the V6 engine is rated highly, while manual-equipped 4-cylinder models are said to be peppy and fun to drive.

What Owners Dislike:
Some owners wish for better fuel economy, richer interior material selection and the availability of a manual transmission with the up-level V6 engine.

History/Description:
This second-generation of Mazda's zoom-zoom sedan was much like the first in that it offered five-passenger seating, 4- or 6-cylinder power, automatic or manual transmissions, and came only in front-wheel drive. Softer, bigger, and heavier than the original MAZDA6, this second-generation car was bigger on comfort and refinement, though somewhat at the expense of all-out performance.

Look for feature content including push-button start, navigation, premium audio, automatic lights wipers, and climate controls, heated leather seats, and a full range of safety gear.

Look for a 2.5L 4-cylinder with manual or automatic gearboxes, and an available 3.7L V6 that came exclusively with an automatic transmission.

Common Issues: Numerous owners reported premature wear from the factory brakes and tires. Though this will largely be a function of driving habits and locale, be sure to inspect the condition and remaining life of both components ahead of your purchase.

Check the rear taillamps for signs of internal melting, possibly caused by assembly materials that can't withstand the heat of the bulbs. Though the exterior lenses aren't known to melt, the interior components might, which could be a visibility-impeding safety issue.

Check for proper operation of the air conditioner, and be sure both xenon lights, if equipped, are working properly -- as they can be pricey to replace when burned out.

First-year models from this generation may be affected by erratic engine behavior in the form of stumbling and hesitation, possibly alongside other electrical issues that may be caused by a faulty wiring harness. These issues seemed to affect first-year (2009) models only.

Systematic or serious issues relating to the second-generation MAZDA6 are virtually nil in all checks of online owner forums. Keep in mind that proper maintenance is key to any vehicle's long-term durability and reliability and that a fresh tune-up and full fluid change in your new-to-you MAZDA6 can go a long way to adding confidence to the purchase.

Amid the controversy about Mercedes' 'secret' Pirelli tire test, F1's governing body on Friday said it is also investigating Ferrari.

At Monaco, Ferrari and Red Bull launched a protest when it emerged that Mercedes had tested tires for Pirelli with its 2013 car and race drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg just after the Spanish grand prix last month.

But at the same time, it was rumoured that Ferrari had similarly tested, after Bahrain, but with a two-year old car and test driver Pedro de la Rosa at the wheel.

The FIA said late on Friday that it is investigating not only Mercedes, but also the Ferrari test.

In a statement, the Paris based federation said it has asked both teams "to reply to a disciplinary inquiry in pursuance of the FIA judicial and disciplinary rules".

IndyCar: Engine change costs pole to Dario Franchitti in Detroit

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Ganassi's Dario Franchitti was the fastest driver in the first qualifying session prior to the first of two IndyCar races presented this weekend in Detroit. Nevertheless, he will have to start 11th because of an unauthorized engine change at the Indy 500.

Because of the penalty, Andretti Autosport EJ Viso will start from the front row slot even though his best lap was 0.2 seconds down on Franchitti's. New Dale Coyne Racing driver Mike Conway was third fastest.

James Jakes finished fourth, in his first-ever Fast Six appearance, with Ryan Hunter-Reay and Alex Tagliani rounding out the top six.

A heavy shower immediately prior to the first session forced the first group to qualify on a soaking wet track, although a dry line began to appear as the afternoon progressed.

There was consternation from several teams, including Schmidt Peterson Motorsport and AJ Foyt Enterprises, who felt that they were unfairly compromised by what they considered to be inconsistencies in how the flags were used.

A separate qualifying session for the Sunday race will take place on Saturday morning.

NASCAR: Denny Hamlin scores second straight Dover pole

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Ever since Denny Hamlin has returned to action after a lower back injury earlier this year he's been on a mission.

A four-race hiatus, due to that injury, means that it is an intense mission.

The Joe Gibbs Racing driver needs victories to secure a wild card entry into NASCAR Sprint Cup's Chase for the Cup title.

For the second week in-a-row he's won the pole position. This time it was one-mile Dover International Speedway. He also won the pole at the fall race in Dover.

NASCAR, Dover, Denny Hamlin
Photo: Denny Hamlin

Hamlin turned a lap of 157.978 mph Friday, in a Toyota, to win the pole at a track also known as the Monster Mile.

"I feel like we're hitting our stride," Hamlin said. "We're running really well at different types of race tracks. Overall, I'm pretty happy. We still need to get those race wins."

Toyota drivers dominated the first two rows with Martin Truex, Jr. starting second at the site of his only Sprint Cup victory.

Kyle Busch and Matt Kenseth, Hamlin's teammates, will start third and fourth, respectively.

Even his teammates were a bit surprised at the back-to-back poles. "I don't know why Denny has to come back and show off all the time right away," quipped Kenseth ironically.

Series points leader and five-time champion, Jimmie Johnson, qualified 24th.

In order to make the Chase with a Wild Card Hamlin needs to finish 20th in the points or in the top ten overall. And, at the moment, he is 97 points shy of that top-ten.

"We've been qualifying pretty good, which has really helped out our cause with our race finishes," Hamlin said.

Dover is what Truex considers a home track therefore he would dearly like to double his win total and end a six-year victory drought. "You always want to come here and get the pole," Truex said. "I love this place so much and have so many fans in this area."

But the pole winner feels like he must win on Sunday.

"I think our only play is to be aggressive," Hamlin said. "I think that to come here and try to get a good points day is irrelevant because if we don't win, then we're not really accomplishing much."
