2006-2011 Mercedes Benz CLS-Class Pre-Owned

History/Description: Capitalizing on the ‘four-door coupe' trend in the premium car marketplace, Mercedes-Benz launched their CLS for the 2006 model year. Aimed at a buyer after luxury, technology and performance wrapped in a sleek, four-door package, the CLS-Class went on to be updated into its latest iteration for the 2012 model.

On first-gen CLS models, look for standard V8 power, with 302 horsepower opening the model range in the early CLS 500, which packed a 5.0L V8. From 2007 and on, a 5.5L V8 was made the base engine, delivering 382 horsepower and facilitating a name change to CLS 550.

Look for automatic transmissions on all models. Rear-wheel drive was standard.

Used CLS shoppers should note that an ‘AMG' designation in a sales ad represents a CLS tuned by Mercedes in-house performance division. The CLS 55 AMG boasted a 469-hp, 5.4L supercharged V8 while the CLS 63 AMG got a naturally-aspirated 6.2L V8 with 503 hp or more. Upgraded chassis components, as well as exclusive visual treatments, are also part of these packages.

Feature content included premium audio, heated leather seats with position memory, navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, wood trim, push-button start and plenty more.

What Owners Like: Styling, performance, exclusivity and comfort were all highly rated here. Brand pride, feature content and the added flexibility of a four-door body were also noted by owners. Most say the CLS-Class has a pleasant overall driving feel that's well suited to short- and long-distance travel.

What Owners Dislike: Blind spots, a stiff ride, limited headroom and rear-seat legroom were among the most common CLS complaints. Some wish for better mileage, too - and virtually all report that the wide body, long hood and low seating position can make parking an intimidating experience.

The Fisker Karma will soon be joined by the Atlantic, a smaller sedan unveiled in New York. No release date has been announced, however.

Fisker also became the first manufacturer to launch vehicles under the US government's Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing (ATVM) program.

Demand is pretty strong overseas. In the Netherlands, considered one of the most competitive markets for premium vehicles, the Karma ranked second in volume to the Porsche Panamera in the luxury sedan segment (all powertrain types included) from January 1st to April 30th.

Canadian sales figures have yet to be disclosed.

This time, a parts-bin special is also a Gran Idea.

The BMW 640i Gran Coupe is essentially a 5-series BMW that emphasizes sex appeal over practicality. It shares its 116.9-inch wheelbase with the 5-series sedan and its 74.6-inch width with the 6-series coupe. At 197.2 inches (16.4 feet), it's longer than either of those cars and almost as long as a short-wheelbase 7-series. With a roof height of 54.8 inches, it's a substantial 2.8 inches lower than the 5-series and 1.4 inches wider. It seats four adults comfortably, a fifth in a pinch. Its trunk is smaller than the one in the 5-series and no bigger than the one in the 6-series coupe. And its long front overhang, unusual for BMW, scrapes its way up driveways and into gas stations.

The peril and payoff of the corporate parts bin.

No car illustrates both the peril and payoff of a luxury marque raiding the corporate parts bin quite like the Lexus ES. Long based on the Toyota Camry, the front-wheel-drive sedan could be seen as on outlier in the Lexus lineup, and yet it's the brand's most popular car. The ES's blue-collar background and blue-blood badge create accessible luxury for buyers and irresistible profits for Toyota Motor Company. It's the drug that neither consumer nor corporation cares to quit.

Apparently the Mini Roadster has a radio, but we didn't bother using it.

Apparently the Mini Roadster has a radio, but I didn't bother using it. Instead, I lowered the roof and enjoyed the burbles, pops, and crackles emitted by the exhaust when the car is in Sport mode. Yes, this car sounds fantastic. Lift off the throttle and you'll hear a barrage of snaps and rumbles; rev the engine at a stop and you can create backfires that sound like a branch snapping. The Mini Roadster also is unbelievably fun to drive because it is light, nimble, and responsive.
