THE WEEK THAT WAS: Saab saga sustained

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
"Saab's way of communicating is a catastrophe," FKG managing director Sven-Ake Berglie said this week in Sweden. "They must have seen this [the cessation of parts shipments] coming up before in December already, but they did not say anything." And: "When the suppliers did not get paid, Saab said it was a few [of them] and it was due to the [fact] the suppliers wanted improved payment terms, which was a complete lie." Not perhaps the best endorsement of an automaker customer by the head of its supplier group. And still the assembly line lies silent.

2012 Kia Rio - First Look - Automobile Magazine
Kia's image makeover trickles down.

There's no question Kia's product lineup has come a long way in a short time, due in no small part to the radical new design language applied by former Audi stylist Peter Schreyer to nearly the entire product lineup. The lone holdout to get the full Schreyer treatment, aside from a token add-on "Tiger Nose" grille update, was the Rio subcompact. Until now. The 2012 Kia Rio and Rio5 on display at the 2011 New York auto show will rejoin the subcompact fight later this year with much the same hardware, but with a style all their own.
