Although the UK used car market shrank by 5.9% in the first half of this year, that was nothing compared to the 26.6% year-on-year drop in new car sales in the first six months of 2009. The show of relative strength began in the first quarter, when used car sales increased by 17% compared with the previous three months, and then, fell back by only 1.1% in the second quarter. The Volkswagen GTI is universally loved around the Automobile Magazine office and that love earned the FTI Automobile of the Year honors for 2007. With the Golf R, the GTI formula is cranked up to 11. Underhood is the familiar 2.0T engine, but it manages to crank out an incredible 270 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque thanks to a maximum boost of 17.4 psi. Sign us up.
