Cadillac CTS adds WiFi: Auto123.com’s reaction

Although wireless Internet is not a bad thing at all, using it in a motor vehicle might be. GM can claim that their system is designed for use by passengers, the only person who would really need it, and will use it most, is the driver. There already are too many distractions in a techno-filled vehicle to divert the person behind the wheel's attention, such as Bluetooth, navigation systems as well as lane-departure and blind-spot monitors. First Drive: 2009 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid
2009 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid - First Drive Cadillac Hybrid SUV - Automobile Magazine
What if-suddenly-driving a 2009 Cadillac Escalade were an environmentally conscientious statement? A proclamation that's more about being green than having green?

Ahhhhh, the Cadillac Escalade. While it's helped define post-millennial Cadillac, this bling-mobile stands as a poster child for conspicuous consumption. The Escalade comes by its reputation honestly, because a 2009 edition with the 403-horsepower 6.2-liter V-8 sucks petrol at the criminal rate of 12 mpg city, and either 18 or 19 mpg highway, depending on whether you're powering one axle or two. The fact that the SUV attracts attention-hungry rappers and other ne'er-do-wells doesn't help the Escalade's reputation any.

We want 'em now, but we don't have 'em yet. These are earth-friendly machines that you'd buy on looks alone.

Despite the sudden drop in gas prices, the long-term trend toward green cars appears solidly in place. But if green machines are the new reality, when are they going to look like something other than dull or dorky little nerd-mobiles? The just-introduced redesigned Toyota Prius and the new Honda Insight, for instance, are the twin geeks of hybrid propulsion. And the boxy new Lexus HS250h hybrid has all the visual dynamism of a shrunken Toyota Camry. None of the mid-size hybrid sedans are anything exciting to look at, and neither is Volkswagen's Jetta TDI. Where is the style? Where is the swagger? Where is the sex appeal?

Cadillac XLR to retire

Launched for the 2004 model year, Cadillac is pulling the plug on its flagship XLR roadster. Using Corvette underpinnings and the luxury brand's 4.6-litre Northstar V8, the XLR never really sold in significant numbers--only 30 were sold in Canada in 2008--so its retirement won't be a big deal.
