Annual All-Stars Notebook - Dyer Consequences
Annual All-Stars Notebook - 2009 Automobile All Stars - Automobile Magazine
The joy of this endeavor, then, lies in the surprises. And fortunately there were plenty of those, too. Consider the case of the Dodge Challenger R/T.

Automobile Magazine's annual All-Stars test inevitably features a few predictable outcomes. For instance, I fully expected the Chevy Corvette ZR1 to rip my face off, and indeed I am now faceless. And I wasn't even driving it at the time. I was in the Jaguar XF, following executive editor Joe DeMatio, who floored the throttle and nearly triggered the Jag's air bags with the concussive boom of the ZR1's exhaust.

2009 Dodge Challenger RT - Dodge Muscle Car - Automobile Magazine
What a fun, fun, hot car. It drives as fun as it looks, and that's pretty damn impressive.

I *heart* this thing! Yeah, it's huge and heavy, but it sounds great, looks great, and goes like stink. The steering is inexcusably numb and slow. The clutch will break your left knee, and it transmits driveline vibes to the pedal - audibly - through the throw-out-bearing. I've never heard a clutch pedal sing before. The shifter is way too high-effort but is bolt-action precise and fits the personality of the car. Engine management and ESP are tuned so well around the car's numbness that you don't even know when you're sliding. I love the pillowy ride but surprisingly not-awful body control. I hate the nav interface and the turn signal indicators in the corners of the cluster. The brakes feel okay, but started smelling a little before I expected them to. The ratios are so close together that you find yourself shifting constantly; the soundtrack is unreal. If only all transmissions were geared like this. What a fun, fun, hot car. It drives as fun as it looks, and that's pretty damn impressive.

Ford F-150 wins latest awards round, voted Motor Trend’s Truck of the Year

It seems like a tough battle between the Dodge Ram and the Ford F-150, both totally redesigned for 2009. The latest round in the head-to-head grudge match goes to the F-150 for claiming Motor Trend Magazine's "Truck of the Year" honours. At the end of October, the Ram outscored the Ford by a small margin to become the AJAC's "Best New Pickup Truck" for 2009. Full story...

2009 Dodge Journey R/T AWD Review

Earlier this year, I attended the North American launch of the Dodge Journey, and I must say that I was rather impressed with the company's new priced-right crossover vehicle. The Journey offers itself up as the almost perfect family transportation device and, as I have already indicated, supplies excellent value for money. In fact, I see it as pretty much the modern interpretation of the well loved family minivan. Full story...

2009 Jeep Patriot North 4WD Review

When Jeep first launched the Patriot I was none too sure about it. After all, it's based on the Dodge Caliber, and although I love the value for money aspect of that vehicle, I couldn't quite fathom a Jeep version of it. Aren't Jeeps supposed to be rugged, go-anywhere types of vehicles? Would you call a Dodge Caliber with 4WD one of those? Well, I'm ready to eat my words and take back everything that I have said about the Patriot in the past, because after spending a week in one, I totally get it. Full story...

Chrysler's Trio of Electric Vehicles - Vile Gossip
Chrysler's Trio of Electric Vehicles - Town & Country, Jeep Wrangler, Dodge Lotus Europa - Automobile Magazine
Another surprise from the mysterious house of smoke and mirrors, Chrysler LLC.

In the total absence of a regular information stream from the once fairly blabby (back when it was a public corporation) Chrysler, we are left to marvel aloud at the latest round of surprise moves from the now-secretive, privately held carmaker. At a hastily assembled news conference, CEO Bob Nardelli gleefully unleashed on the crowd three electric vehicles from the equivalent of nowhere. It might as well have been rabbits from a silk top hat, the jaded press corps was so stunned.

2009 Dodge Ram - Next Generation Dodge Pickup - Automobile Magazine
The latest Dodge, as seen here, is a nice piece of work in terms of styling and engineering, building on the previous generation and replacing the traditional leaf springs in back with coil springs for an improved ride.

Back in 1986, Chrysler-designer-turned-Dodge-car-marketing-manager Bob Marcks had the idea that a tough "big rig" look could transform Dodge pickup sales. He made a couple of rough sketches, and even though trucks weren't his business, his idea was picked up in the creative ferment of the Bob Lutz/Tom Gale era at the old "New" Chrysler Corporation, resulting in the production vehicle that debuted at the Detroit auto show in 1993. That the aggressive styling really mattered was proven by results: with pretty much the same old underpinnings, sales tripled less than a year after the Ram went on sale. At one point, the Ram pickup was the third best-selling vehicle in America, ahead of all passenger cars and behind only the perpetual leaders, Ford's F-150 and Chevrolet's Silverado.

2003-2008 Pontiac Vibe Pre-Owned

Calling the Pontiac Vibe a sales success is more than a bit of an understatement. Because of its massive utility, economical operation, funky styling and readiness to please in any job, Pontiac sold them in massive amounts. Vibe was a five-door wagon or hatchback, though some call it a compact crossover as well. Its ring-mates included the Dodge Caliber, Mazda 3 Sport and Subaru Impreza 5-door, though Vibe rounded things out with plenty of selection, options and an affordable price. Full story...
