Widespread confusion about Sunday's grid for the Japanese grand prix has finally ended, and the big winner was Rubens Barrichello. The Brazilian was penalised five grid places by the stewards for ignoring yellow flags in qualifying, but actually Barrichello started sixth, just one place lower than his qualifying allocation.

Stewards at Suzuka have told Ferrari that Felipe Massa can test a GP2 car next week for the purposes of a "medical exam", the Italian team confirmed on Sunday. The Brazilian driver, who has been confirmed as Fernando Alonso's teammate for the 2010 season, is recovering from serious head injuries sustained in July's Hungarian GP qualifying.

At a meeting of the FOTA alliance at Suzuka, a novel cost-cutting initiative for the forthcoming winter period was discussed. Kamui Kobayashi has been put on standby to possibly race in Sunday's Japanese grand prix. Timo Glock has a heavy cold and on Friday sat out practice with a high fever, and on Saturday was transported to a local hospital after cutting his leg and twinging his back in a high speed qualifying crash. Team president John Howett said at Suzuka that he hopes Glock, 27, can drive on Sunday.
