COMMENT: Never mind the cars, buy the carmaker

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Would you buy a car from a carmaker that sells only US$109,000 electric sportscars based on a Lotus design, has burned through US$230.5m in cash since its July 2003 start, posted losses every quarter since, and will have a gap in its line between the final roadster and a planned, cheaper, luxury electric sports sedan due in 2010? Probably not, which explains the film star, musician and well-heeled electric car fan base to date. But, would you buy a slice of the carmaker? This week's IPO said a resounding 'yes'. Full story...

Sport Coupe Comparison: War of the Sports Car Worlds
Sport Coupe Comparison - 2010 Lotus Evora, 2011 Chevrolet Corvette Z06, 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera S, 2011 Nissan GTR - Automobile Magazine
The United States, Japan, Germany, and Great Britain may play nice with each other when it comes to diplomacy and economics, but in the sports car arena, it's an all-out war.

Once upon a time, before globalism became a favorite buzzword, cars really said something about the countries that produced them. The frugality and reliability of a Honda subcompact spoke to the ingenuity and determination of post-war Japan. The power and size of a tail-finned Cadillac convertible embodied American swagger. And so on. The automobile used to be as much an expression of culture as a country's art or food.

The Italian Job remake… with Lotus Evoras

In a stroke of genius the organisers of the prestigious Goodwood Festival of Speed decided on a theme of 'Viva Veloce' or 'The Passion for Speed' for the event this year (2-4th July). Capitalising on the momentum of such a flash of inspiration (and quite frankly we're always looking for any excuse to get out and about) Lotus jumped on the bandwagon and decided to put the press to work with a convoy of Evoras driving from Italy (Turin) to England (Goodwood) - the reverse journey to that of Charlie Croker and his cronies and hopefully without the added drama of bank robbery and literal cliff-hanger!
