Driver assistance technologies aim to make the vehicle capable of perceiving its surroundings, interpret them, identify critical situations, and assist the driver in performing driving manoeuvres. The object is, at best, to prevent accidents completely and, at worst, to minimise the consequences of an accident for those concerned. Matthew Beecham talked with executives of TRW about their driver assistance technologies and how the global market is shaping-up.

Ian Hobday, managing director of UK-based Liberty Electric Cars, has told BusinessGreen the company is now actively investigating the the possibility of buying Modec, the Coventry-based electric van maker which was placed in administartion on 4 March, arguing such a move would be preferable to the company being acquired by an overseas firm, as happened late last year to Wearside-based Tanfield Group's Smith Electric Vehicles, which converts Ford vans to electric drivetrains.

2011 Nissan Juke vs. 2011 Mini Countryman - Automobile Magazine
Turbochargers, all-wheel drive, and snow-covered back roads.

The Nissan Juke and Mini Countryman beg to be compared. The small crossovers are so similar in every physical measure and mechanical specification that you could imagine they were born of the same focus group, the same marketing gurus, and the same engineering team. Length, width, and height between the two are all within an inch. Each uses a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder making about 180 hp. Both cars meter power to the rear wheels through electronically controlled differentials. The only place it seems our two automakers split paths was styling.

2011 Dodge Grand Caravan Crew - Editor's Notebook - Automobile Magazine
The sleeper of the minivan segment.

I wish I could have spent more time in the Grand Caravan to fully judge the interior of this van versus the Chrysler Town & Country and the others that recently passed through our garage. But for ten grand less than the Honda Odyssey and five grand less than the Chrysler and the Toyota Sienna, this Dodge is tough to quibble with. In fact, the most glaring complaint I have about the Caravan still holds in the Town & Country: the light gray plastic on the doors is too plasticky and also is a bad choice as a color, since it is too light and will immediately look scuffed, worn, and dirty in the hands (and feet) of any family.

2011 Nissan Quest SL, an AW Drivers Log:

EXECUTIVE EDITOR ROGER HART: I would dismiss the Quest in any discussion about minivans simply because of the CVT. The way it allows for the engine to rev practically to redline as you gain speed just drives me crazy.
