Toyota recycles used hybrid batteries in Japan

Used batteries from first-generation Toyota Prius hybrids may not be as effective now as they were in their heyday, but Toyota insists on giving them a new lease on life.

Starting in April, the automaker will offer Toyota dealers across Japan an electricity management system that uses recycled nickel-metal hydride batteries from old hybrid vehicles, as well as solar panels and other equipment. The system will produce backup electricity that can be stored and used during power outages and emergencies.

Each unit has a storage capacity of 10 kWh (the average home uses 15-20 kWh) and weighs approximately 980 kg. It stands 1,900 mm high, 1,140 mm wide, and 1,280 mm deep.

No word yet on possible applications in other markets.
